Joe was very up front and honest from day one. The project was very difficult and Joe did an excellent job staying very close to the original estimate and, considering the many unforseen problems that were encountered, he completed the project in a reasonable amount of time. Joe always considered our ideas when problems arose and used his expertise to advise us when and why our ideas wouldn't work. The quality of the work and of the material used was outstanding and we couldn't have been more pleased with the final result. I would and have recommended Joe to both friends and family and plan on using Hudson Home Improvement for all of our future projects.

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
Dear member- You called me and asked: 'give me an estimate'. So, I began by asking a few simple questions which I do for every single person that calls me such as: What type of project is this, where are you located, what is the address? You then got upset at my asking for your address. Your thought process that I will send you junk mail. I then asked how would I be able to visit the project if I didn't have an address. You demanded again 'I give an estimate'. Sometimes I can give a 'ballpark' estimate over the phone but there are many variables which make up a project and therefore I needed to ask a few questions and really visit the jobsite. At this point, I'm sorry to say I didn't understand and then you hung up on me. I'm surprised that asking for basic information fell into the category of 'rude' to you. If that's the case, I do apologize. Joe Shoback

Joe Shoback is the consummate professional contractor. He's very pleasant, responsive, clear and trustworthy. Among the things I liked most is that he didn't nickel and dime me. He quoted the job with some of the materials not selected. He then suggested things. Those things he suggested were not the cheapest options, but what he thought would make the job look nice (I did emphasize during our contracting phase that quality work was very important to me). All his suggestions were excellent, I happily deferred to him, and in the end I would do it exactly the same way again. The phrase "however you want it" was often spoken. He properly budgeted the job and didn't have to come back for cost overruns. One exception was he didn't nail the cost of the counter top. In the end he let me have it at cost for just that reason (it cost an additional $500 making the counter top $3200 total). So his misjudging the cost of the counter top didn't cost me anything - and because he did it at cost, actually saved me money as I would have selected the same counter top anyway. Joe was also very flexible and worked around delays well. I ordered a sink from Home Depot that was supposed to be in stock but took 2 months to get because they couldn't figure out where they sent it (their own warehouse!). Joe also referred me to an excellent painter and exterminator. He would have done the painting too, but I had already picked a painter before we contracted, and he didn't work out afterwards. So I hired the painter Joe recommended separately (not included in cost quote above). Joe did a number of things that should fall under the description of "favors." He made this long job as easy as it could have been. My house turned out beautiful. I'm very glad to be able to say that if I did it over I would do it exactly the same way (sans any special orders from Home Depot who proved to be monumentally unreliable!). I have some more work to do and I definitely want Joe to do it. I'm very glad I used Angie's List and found Joe.
Description of Work: Installed new kitchen (and selected much of the materials), replaced all moldings, baseboard and window trim, installed replacement windows, re-finished all floors, replaced all outlets, switches and switch covers, installed new lighting, installed stove, refrigerator, dishwasher washer and dryer, and myriad minor tasks.

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
The customer's husband called me one evening asking for electrical work done to their home. He wanted an electrician to come out and troubleshoot "all the electrical issues in his home". I told him I could refer him to an electrician and he said he has several electricians and he doesn't need another one. I wished him luck. Then, I was surprised when he called me again the following morning. Then his wife also contacted me separately that morning. So, three phone calls now from the same household for a service that we do not perform. I call them back thinking perhaps there is some sort of emergency and perhaps I can help them. The husband explains to me he was originally calling me about a structural issue they have in the basement, not an electrical issue. He tries to explain it, then I hear his wife literally yelling at him in the background. He says, you'd better talk to my wife about this. Ok. After hearing his wife yell at him, the wife gets on the phone with me and proceeds to tell me her husband "got it all wrong again!" and that they have a structural issue in their basement where the bathroom is about to fall through the floor. I told her I could come out there to meet them but that I would not be able to give them an estimate without an architect plan. I explained we would need permits for this work and we cannot get permits without an architect plan. Further, the architect plan would determine the scope of work. Why would I give an estimate for an inaccurate scope of work? It didn't make sense to me then and it doesn't make sense to me now. Despite my efforts to educate her spending 20 minutes on the phone with her, she just wouldn't hear what I had to say. She started yelling at me on the phone about how I don't want to give her an estimate. Then she is yelling about how no contractors want to see her project. She even yelled at her husband again, I'm unsure why. More yelling about how no-contractors want to meet with her. How no contractors want to work on her house. How she is 'completely frustrated' by the process. Then she says she's going to tell angies list that I'm not doing estimates. I politely explained to her that I am not a licensed architect. I politely explained that her approach may be contributing to the reason she is frustrated. If she has an architect plan there is a scope of work. I explained if she wants me to do the work I am going to require an architect. I explained I am going to require permits. I am going to require building department inspections. I explained structural work requires permits. More yelling and ranting from her about permits and inspections. At this point, it was about all my nerves could handle. I told her I would email her an estimate for the architect fee and she can get back to me if she is interested. I emailed her a very reasonable architect fee. She responded she wouldn't be using our services. I suspect she will find a contractor that will do the work with no license, no permits, no insurance, no architect, no inspections. I hope it works out although this approach is generally suspect. Best regards Joe Shoback

Contacted Hudson by phone shortly after seeing the great reputation. Promptly my call was returned and a time set for an estimation. Everyone was very polite. Due mostly weather (We had snow storms), the appointment was not kept more than once. But they always rescheduled promptly. The day of the appointment a project manager came, he was several hours late due to an emergency. Luckily I have a flexible schedule but it was still a bit off. Did a visual inspection and took some notes. We discussed the work in detail and did not discuss any money/quotation since the project was major. It also was not the PM's job. The following day I received an email that the job was not a good fit. There was no response to my questions asking for reasons for "not a good fit." My conclusion is that this firm cannot do major renovation in older buildings in New Jersey and is better suited for simpler work such as kitchen renovation, etc.

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
Dear Customer- We appreciate the feedback. I did personally speak with you the morning of our scheduled appointment, calling you an hour prior asking if we could reschedule given I had an emergency that a previous customer called me about. We had heavy rains and the customer had a flood in her first floor. Oddly, her bath tub was filling with water. This was a first for me and took some troubleshooting and various calls to various trades in my network. It turned out, there was a tree root blocking her sewer lateral stopping the rainwater from draining and backing up into her home. If you had a bathtub full of water spilling onto your floor causing untold damages, I suspect you'd appreciate if I put that ahead of an estimate which could be done at anytime. It did take us a couple hours to get over to you given I had to pull my project manager off of another project given your insistence we keep the appointment even though we clearly had our hands full on the emergency scenario which I explained in detail to you. I apologize if we didn't immediately respond to your inquiry about why the project isn't a good fit. Generally, people are pleased with the fact that we respond immediately after the appointment if we cannot bid on the project. Here are a few reasons why a project may not be a good fit: 1- This particular customer searching for 3+ years for a contractor and "has met many contractors but never found a contractor I like or trust". Even though our customers are generally very happy with our work and our service, I find that happy experience is as much about the customer as it is about our work and performance. Someone that is unhappy with every other contractor they've met and/or hired in the past 3+ years is probably also going to be unhappy with us despite how good we are and how much extra effort we put into the project and cultivating the relationship with the customer. 2- The customer has an unrealistic budget. This particular customer wanted a bathroom gut remodel, kitchen gut remodel, and a general makeover on his bedroom with all new electric/flooring/paint for 15k. Its not possible. When we explained this to the customer, he got irritated and upset. Rather than get into a confrontation on-site, we told him we would respond via email later which calmed him down. 3- The customer thinks we are 'day-laborers'. We're not day-laborers, we are family men. We hire licensed trades. We have all the proper insurance, licenses, trade organizations, training, certifications and yes we do pay taxes. Asking us where we pickup our day-labor force on a given day is incongruous with how we work. 4- Scamming the insurance company on an insurance claim. I'm not going to put my reputation at risk to 'pump-up' an insurance claim for anyone. Its unethical and may be illegal. Thanks but no thanks. We look at the remodeling process as a 2-way street. Is it a good fit for the customer and a good fit for us. There is no sense in taking on a project that we cannot fulfill to our standards. If its not a fit then we try and educate the customer, offering advice and building good-will in the process and a possible referral in the future. In this particular case, despite our efforts to educate the customer I suspect he will be searching for another 3+ years for a contractor that he will in the end be unhappy with. Joe Shoback

I had crumbling tile in my shower and a hole in the wall. Joe Shoback showed up on time and gave me a good estimate. It was a little pricey, but his waterproofing system seemed worth it, and a prior contractor had done less than a satisfactory job only a few years earlier, so we agreed to do business. Joe and his crew had to postpone our start date by one day, but once we got going they were extremely professional, efficient, courteous and responsive. They finished the job one day sooner than expected. The tile job was impeccable and I am very happy with the end result. I will definitely call Joe to bid on my next project.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. They never completed it. They wanted to do all the building of the construction and I have not gotten any plans or anything from them because they only wanted to do the construction. If I have somebody else, they have to contact them to get any of the plans. They would not give it to me directly. There were no additional charges. They got back to me. They came right away.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. It was okay. It was very small in scope. There were no additional charges. It took them a little bit to come out because I considered my schedule. It was okay with what I got. I have gone with some totally different provider. It was just initial consultation. They got back when I called them initially. He kind of went over what exactly it was and I understood completely what he was saying. He came out and did what he said he was going to do. It didn't really end up being useful but they provided what I need.

Joe Shoback (owner), Mark Barnas (project manager), Emil (labor), and team were fantastic to work with and the quality of execution was spot-on. We discovered that our master shower was leaking (thanks to visible stains on the ceiling of the floor below), and Joe's team was able to come in, assess the problem, provide an accurate estimate, complete the work exactly as promised including a shower door upgrade, and even deal with a few curve balls I threw at them with other last-minute additional hardware upgrades (which I decided to do after I saw the quality of work they performed on the first phase of the project.) They were a "measure twice, cut once" kind of crew and we had no surprise costs which I appreciated for peace of mind that the work was being carefully considered and completed, not just slapped together. Cost wise, having sought a few estimates for the work, Joe gave me the most confidence that his team could do quality work and his estimate was right in the middle of the quotes I received (which felt about right.) We have worked with other contractors in the past (for Superstorm Sandy flood restoration), but I wanted to try someone new this time around. It was a good call because Hudson Home Improvement stood head and shoulders above the rest of the contractors we've used in the past. We will absolutely be calling Hudson Home Improvement again in the future if needed and give them a solid endorsement.
Description of Work: Hudson Home Improvement diagnosed and corrected our master shower leak damage, installed proper water-proofing materials, and completed master shower upgrades including a frameless shower door installation and rain shower/hand shower hardware upgrade. Our total cost of service noted here included high-end hardware products I chose for the shower, not just labor costs - FYI.

Burst Pipe: One day late last winter, I was working from home and noticed that the water pressure in the two faucets in my condo seemed extremely low. I decided to check out the basement of the building to see if I could figure out if the issue were city-related or building-related -- and was greeted by the site of water gushing from a pipe in the back of the basement. I called Joe at Hudson Home Improvement because I figured even if this job were too small for him, he'd know what to do or who to call. He appeared less than 30 minutes later, diagnosed the problem (a burst pipe in the empty condo on the first floor), and was able to fix it within an hour. Superstorm Sandy Aftermath: After the water drained from our basement, Joe and his crew cleaned and bleached the basement and put together a plan for replacing the water heaters for each of the three condo units and my condo's boiler as well as mitigating future flooding issues by installing a back-flow preventer. We weren't able to start work on the equipment replacement until after chasing down insurance payments but once the work was scheduled, it was completed quickly and efficiently. Here's where things got even more stressful and Hudson Home Improvement came to the rescue again: Part of the process of replacing the hot water heaters and the boiler in the basement involved making sure that we pulled the correct permits and passed inspection. Through no fault of HHI, the work didn't pass fire inspection -- the inspector found issues with work that had previously been done to our chimney (which serves as the output for the mechanicals in the basement). To add to the stress, my husband and I were in the process of selling our condo and wanted to make sure that there would be no loose ends from the basement work left over for the new condo association to handle. Mark and Joe clearly communicated what the inspector found, set forth a cost to fix the issues, and managed the process of setting up re-inspection. They were able to complete the work on a tight deadline, came in under budget, and best of all -- everything passed inspection.
Description of Work: Emergency fix for burst pipe; replaced the building's hot water heaters (3) and a boiler in the aftermath of Sandy storm damage; mitigated permit issues and problems from previous chimney work. All of this work was for the basement of a 3-condo brownstone building in Jersey City.

First and foremost, Joe and his team are great at communicating and setting expectations. There was not one moment during the project when I felt that I didn't know what to expect or wonder what was happening. This is so critical when working with any contractor and Hudson Home Improvement really excels in this area. The bathroom re-do was our first large-scale renovation project, and Joe spent a great deal of time with my husband and me creating a project plan that included making sure we understood the permitting process, when to buy materials (and what we would be responsible for buying and what was included), down to the details of how the construction trash would be handled and removed. One of the most important aspects of this project for us was not allowing the renovation to take over the entire apartment (the bathroom is centrally located within the space and it's the only bathroom), which the team achieved with very little stress for us. Most importantly, though, my husband and I absolutely loved the finished renovation. The entire project took six weeks from start to finish. From the end of the project to the time we sold our apartment (a year later), we would walk in the bathroom and joke that it was by far the nicest room in the house. I cannot recommend Joe and his team at Hudson Home Improvement strongly enough. If you want to work with a team who cares that you end up with the result you want and makes sure that you never feel unsure about what's going on in the project, then I highly recommend that you call them.

I hired an acoustical engineer (not affiliated with HHI) to tell me what changes to make to create an acoustically neutral (acoustically "flat") environment in one of my basement rooms. The HHI guys carried out those recommendations. First they made structural changes to the room itself. There was a drop ceiling already in place, but the height was staggered, 9 feet high in one part of the room and 12 feet high in another. This was not ideal for acoustical purposes, so they made the drop ceiling 9 feet high throughout, lowering the part that was 12 feet. They then put a layer of pink insulation above the drop ceiling (sitting on the tiles) to absorb sound/bass in the space in the ceiling. They blew cellulose insulation into the walls (inside the sheetrock) in the room (to prevent vibrations from bass). They then built (to sound engineer's spec) and installed 25 sound absorbers around the room's walls. They also built (to spec) and installed a cloud absorber above the studio desk (to absorb sound reflections off the desk). They also installed LED lighting into the cloud absorber. Two different sound engineers evaluated my room after HHI were finished, both concluded the room was acoustically "flat" (thus HHI had done an excellent job).

They sealed up and repaired a window frame that was leaking significant amounts of water into the house. Water had damaged the sheetrock, insulation, and interior paint. We have no complaints about Hudson Home Improvement. The team was professional, open to our feedback and input, and completed the job in a timely fashion. We bought and assembled IKEA cabinetry, and they took on the job enthusiastically and professionally, utilizing plans we already had in place. Our job had its fair share of challenges - tricky plumbing, a new footprint, extensive electrical work - but they took it all in stride. I'd fully recommend the team for anyone looking to renovate their kitchen.

It went really well. The owner is pretty hands on. He met with us and gave us an estimate. Compared to other estimates his prices were very reasonable. He was on site everyday throughout the process. His people were clean, honest, and got the job done before the scheduled deadline. Months after the job was completed, we actually encountered an issue with our fridge that involved him having to rip up a couple of the tiles that he put down . He brought a couple of guys out to do that and replace the tiles afterwards for cost only.

I contacted other contractors with this job, but they all refused to take it. Some said the job was too small since it was only a wetbar and not a full kitchen. Others said they would not because I did not buy the cabinets through their company. Hudson was the only company that would work with me. Joe is a professional. He went over the job with me step by step. Because of wiring, he advised we change the layout of the cabinets which worked out well. During every phase of the job, Joe keep me up to date with every aspect of the job. Everything was done on time and my wife & I am very happy with the results.

We had a very pleasant experience working with Hudson Home Improvement. The owner (Joe) and lead contractor for our job (Mark) were incredibly responsive every step of the way. We appreciated that they stayed in touch via email and text and provided regular updates on the job, including any delays and information about materials. They were also very transparent about the process, so we always knew what to expect. We had received other estimates for this job, but the contractors never seemed to grasp exactly what we were looking for -- offering estimates that were too high and expansive or too low and basic. Joe and Mark immediately understood what we wanted and provided guidance that made sense given our space and the challenges of a small, older home. We trusted their advice and are very happy with the results.
Description of Work: Hudson Home Improvement conducted the remodel of our downstairs full bathroom -- redoing the floor, installing a new shower and sink, building and installing new cabinets and finishing the bathroom with paint and hardware.

Joe and his team were very professional and really helped me out when I was in a jam. They laid down protective papers and drop cloths throughout the house and treated my place like it was their own. Excellent job all around I am currently working with them again on another project.
Description of Work: I had an wall air conditioner unit re-installed after 2 other contractors had botched the Job twice.

They called back the same day - which is great! He told me that I lived too far (in Bergen County - 20-25 minutes from Jersey City) to work on the job and I should call a local contractor. On their Angie's List page Hudson Improvement clearly says that they service Bergen County...Maybe my project wasn't big enough for him or maybe he is just too busy.
Description of Work: I called Hudson Improvement to come give me an estimate for a bathroom gut.
