The crew was very personal and kept me in the loop if any concerns arouse. They showed up around 930-10 am everyday and stayed till 3-4pm. I'm very happy with the quality of the work!! I expected to get home on the last day to a huge clean up but the crew really did a great job cleaning up after themselves
Description of Work: I had a new thin brick wall put in my condo. He never did one before and was honest about that but he did his research on the product. I also has them put in new tile for the kitchen.

Everything went fairly smoothing. What I appreciate most about Joe is that he sticks to his quote and does not try to run up the charges as the project progresses. We paid the exact amount of the quote. We are very happy with the bathroom and Joe was very responsive to any issues we had during the process and was quick to change or correct anything we weren't happy with. The quality of the work was very good. I would definitely use these guys again in the future!
Description of Work: A complete bathroom remodel. Our old bathroom was torn out to the studs and we had a new one put in with about the same layout. We also had heated floors, a vent fan, and a shower light added.

Everything went great and the all remodeling process was smooth and easy. Since I am new to the Hoboken area (moved form Boston) and I don't have a car, Joe offered me to accompany with his truck to Sears in Jersey City in order to pick up the dish washer as well as going with me to the Lumber company to help me choose the French door. He spent his all saturday morning doing this with me and I really appreciated the fact he went the "extra mile" and did so very graciously and in such a friendly way . The work itself was performed on time, with great competency and was very clean. Everyone in his team was very nice and did a great job. All of this made the whole experience very pleasant and in the end I am extremely satisfied with the outstanding result. I feel very lucky to have found a contractor whom I can trust and can do any job I need to be done. Obviously I strongly recommend Hudson Home Improvement to anyone, and I will be using them again if I need more work in my Condo.
Description of Work: I had just bought a new Condo in Hoboken and wanted to do some remodeling. First in the kitchen; I wanted to streamline the kitchen by getting rid of an island and thus moving the sink, adding a dishwasher ( requiring electrical work), and installing a new granite countertop. Then I wanted to create a window size opening in the wall between the kitchen and the living room in order to allow more light in the living room. Finally I wanted to install a French door with a transom window above it. I sent an email to Hudson Home Improvement based on the Angies list review. Joe Shoback, the owner, called me back within a half hour after sending my email. He was very helpful and flexible in arranging a meeting at my Condo so that he could give me an estimate. He arrived on time and was very gracious and friendly. he listened attentively to what I was looking for and immediately explained how he would proceed and made great suggestions. I felt immediately comfortable. 2 or 3 days latter I got an email with his detailed estimate. my first impression was confirmed: the estimate was very honest and fair. The result of this "estimate process" was that I knew I could trust Joe and feeling completely at ease I did not even try to get other estimates.

I'd been living in a condo on the top floor of a brownstone for four years staring at an empty washer/dryer hookup in our kitchen -- and I had no idea how to get the project started. The w/d hookup is in a narrow closet and the kitchen itself is narrow so it was not going to be an easy situation to solve. In addition, we needed to have tile work done in the bathroom, fan and duct work done in the bathroom, and ceiling fans installed. I called Joe for an estimate and he was responsive, clear, and took the time to explain exactly what work would need to get done as well as set expectations about how long each part of the process would take. It also became clear over the course of the project that Joe has built a great team who have worked with him for consistently and that all of them -- whether they were running wires or installing duct-work -- were clean, consciencous, polite, and timely. Everyone on the team went above and beyond to complete the work. Joe's estimate was completely accurate and reasonable; the payment schedule and terms were also very clear. What was most important to me, though, was Joe's willingness to take the time to answer questions and to educate us on the systems in our condo and building -- it can be stressful to deal with a 100+ year old brownstone in an historic district so this extra help is very much appreciated. I highly recommend Hudson Home Improvement.

I had called the company to get an estimate on getting an addition put on my house, adding a masterbath as well as redoing the kitchen and two existing baths. I had architect plans already drawn up so I just needed an estimate and timeline as well as wether they would be able to do it. Joe came out and looked at the plans and the house and said I would get an estimate emailed to me. He called me a week later asking me what my expectations where for an estimate and what I thought would be included in the estimate. So we went over that over the phone and he said the project might cost up to 130,000 which I said was fine because I knew it would be roughly around that much. I waited for him to email me an estimate and I never got one. He never contacted me after that phone. I did not bother calling him back because he seemed like he wasn't interested which is fine I just wish he had told me so I could have then gotten an estimate from another contractor and would not have wasted my time waiting around. I went with someone else who actually gave me an estimate. The only reason I contacted this company was because of the reviews they had gotten.

They didn't respond to my email. I did a follow-up call. I just didn't get a good feel. I spoke with them over the phone. I canceled because I just didn't get a good feel about whoever answered the phone. He seemed hesitant. I don't know if he wasn't interested. I certainly wouldn't be contacting them again. He told me that I needed a whole new house. He sounded nasty. I didn't like his attitude. I had to call them back and they just seemed totally not interested in doing anything for me. They lost.

I spoke to Joe and he made it clear that he was not interested if the job was small. So I am not sure why he is listed in the handyman category. I wanted tiles and the window sill in our bathroom fixed. He gave his solution and cost over the phone without really seeing what was needed. I tried to explain to him that I did not know what was needed but he insisted that his phone-solution was the right one and he did not need to see anything. A very strange experience

Response from Hudson Home Improvement LLC
I spoke to this member in a phone conversation on a Saturday afternoon. The member explained to me the situation which included a window sill in his shower which had been incorrectly tiled and therefore water had leaked into the framing of his shower wall thus causing other tiles to come loose. I informed the member based on what he told me that the only way to correct the problem is to remove the tile in the shower and retile the tub surround and introduce a waterproof membrane which is standard practice for my company. Retiling a shower or tub area is a standard activity for my company. We've done it hundreds of times and unless there is some nuance the pricing is standard. Given it was a Saturday afternoon and I was at a children's birthday party I told him I couldn't stop by. I told him all of this, he was upset demanding that I stop by to 'tell him what the problem is'. I again told him it was straightforward-to correct the problem retile the area or else he'll be calling me next year with the same problem. I believe in doing the job correctly the first time. He's got one thing right...it was an strange experience. Thank you Joe Shoback President Hudson Home Improvement LLC

Joe came by the third time April 29 with a couple of guys from his crew to go over the work to be done and materials needed. Work actually started on May 2 with installation of insulation in the crawlspace, bedrooms and hallway. Items were boxed and drop cloths were put over furniture for protection. The removal of the ceilings in the other rooms were next, during this time it was discovered two sections of the heating vents needed to be replaced. Drywall was put on the ceilings and the joints plastered followed by sanding. This took about two weeks. Next came the preparation for and the painting of all the ceilings, rooms and hallways as well as the installation of the drop ceiling in the powder room. Following the painting the drop cloths were removed, floors were then swept, vacuumed and mopped and furniture dusted and put back in place. This was followed by the installation of the carpet. After the carpet the molding, closet and room doors were rehung. The work took four weeks and I feel the work pace was on point. The workers I dealt with were great. They were prompt, professional, courteous, hardworking and accommodating. Joe Shoback stopped by a few times during the project and worked with and communicated with the insurance company. I would do business with him again without hesitation.
Description of Work: Hudson Home Improvement worked with my insurance company so my cost was the deductible. They installed insulation in my crawlspace, hallway and ceilings of two rooms. Ceilings were replaced in five rooms as well as two hallways and a bathroom. A drop ceiling was installed in the powder room. Two bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room, the powder room and the bathroom, stairwell and hallways were painted. Plastering and molding was done in two bedrooms and hallway. Carpeting was installed in five rooms, stairway and halls.

Joe came over to discuss the work - he was very polite, asked thorough questions, showed up on time, and provided an estimate two days later. The estimate for the work listed the three projects we talked about, but included only one flat total of $2,700.00. This number is almost twice as much as two other contractors have given me (and that's with the $250 off for Angie's List customers) - so I told Joe that, said I was disappointed because I was looking forward to working with him, and asked him to provide a breakdown of his estimate. His response: "Thx for the feedback, my price reflects all the items I included in the email including the cabinet." I feel like if he didn't want to do the work, he shouldn't have wasted my time (or his). I think it's totally unacceptable not to provide details about the estimate, and everyone should be wary when you get a flat quote like that with absolutely no information. I see that everyone else has had great experiences with Joe, so maybe this is just a fluke and maybe he's just not interested in smaller projects, but I was annoyed and I'm absolutely sure I would have been getting ripped off had I gone with Hudon.
Description of Work: I requested an estimate for three projects: running wires, adding switches, patching holes, and installing a ceiling fan; installing a glass tile backspash in my kitchen; builting and installing an additional cabinet in my kitchen.

Joe and team exceeded our expectations, especially given the real time constraints. He also made a few extra, out of the initial scope of the work, adjustments that greatly improved our laundry room space situation. Very professional. Joe provided frequent updates and maintained a high level of communication throughout the job.
Description of Work: Recently purchased a house with a washer and dryer in the basement. We decided to move the laundry operation to the second floor and needed to vent the dryer through a wall. Brownstone is +100 years old and we were under a time constraint with a newborn on the way. The team built a soffit, plumbed, wired, dry walled, tiled with a drain and painted all within 30 days (including all but final permitting).

Joe is a thorough professional. Detail oriented to the max. We called him for an estimate to convert a former doctor's office into a rental apartment. Joe went over the floor plans with us making suggestions we hadn't thought about. His estimate was much lower than others we had received. His crew is very skilled, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, even the clean up crew were great. Needless to say we were very pleased with the final result and every real estate agent and prospective tenant who saw the apartment commented on the quality of the work.

The gentlemen I spoke to responded very promptly and was courteous and professional. However, when I asked him to elaborate as to why his cost was so much higher than other quotes I didn't really get an answer.
Description of Work: received a quote (only a quote; no work done) to install a tile floor for a less than 700 sq. foot apartment with existing hardwood floors. Price quoted seemed unusually high at $5,000 (I would supply tile). Other quotes were $1,200 to 1,500 (me providing tiles). I cannot comment on the work; it must be excellent for the high price?

I called Joe at about 8:30am, and he said that my problems sounded small and that he could probably walk me through them over the phone. When he realized the problems might be a bit more complicated, he volunteered to stop by within an hour and a half. He arrived even soon and figured out how my recessed lighting works. He said that he could get an electrician to fix the problem correctly but recommended an imperfect but very adequate and inexpensive fix that I could perform myself. I'm very happy with this latter recommendation. As for the refrigerator problem, Joe determined that the water line simply hadn't been turned on, whereas I thought the water line hadn't been connected. He explained the various valves under my sink to me and their different functions. Again, all of this was for free. I offered a tip, and Joe refused. When I have more serious issues, I'll definitely be calling Joe.
Description of Work: Joe came over without charge to look at a recessed light that would not stay in place and to help me figure out why my ice maker was not working.

The project was very smooth, and Joe was responsive and professional throughout the entire process. I am an architect and was looking to save some money by drawing the plans and pre-purchasing most of the material. Joe was extremely easy to work with and gave good advice throughout the project. There was a delay in the completion due to an issue with the Kitchen cabinets which were ordered from home depot, through no fault of Joe. Even after the delay, he was able to pick back up and finish the job quickly. I would recommend Joe as a general contractor for this type of work, he is courteous, professional and does what he says. His pricing was also very fair, all in all, a positive experience.

I've done 3 renovations and found that any renovation, large or small, is stressful. There is no getting around it. What sets Joe and his team apart from others is that they know it can be stressful, that the client will be stressed out that things go wrong that are not the fault of the contractor, and they work with you to alleviate the stress. They suggested work-arounds, alternatives, schedule changes, a lot of things--whenever problems arose, and on those rare occasions when they made a mistake, quickly took responsibility and made it right at no cost. Joe and his team of workmen are excellent. He provided an initial bid in a timely fashion, and worked with me to come up with a price that was within my budget but still accomplished the task. He began when he said he would, and proceeded according to schedule. When he found unexpected problems, we worked them out agreeably. He was very agreeable to revisions as we went along, and charged reasonably for the changes I wanted. He was always available when necessary, by email, phone, or if necessary in person. He regularly appeared on the job to supervise the work, although his team was so good that little supervision was necessary. His team was very professional, having had a lot of experience doing work of this type. The work took place right underneath the unit I live in, so I know it was not overly noisy. On the rare occasions that I wasn't satisfied with some of the work, he quickly redid it to my liking and did not charge me for this additional work. He involved me in decision making as much as I wanted to be involved. Some things I left to him and his judgment; others I accompanied HIM to Home Depot or other vendors to select cabinets, etc. I am extremely satisfied with the work that his company did. If I have another project of any kind, Joe would be the only person I would contact and be assured that he would give me a fair price. I wouldn't even have others bid a future job because with Joe I would know that his price was a good price, and he would do the work very well and on schedule.
Description of Work: Joe's firm did a complete remodel of the lower half of a townhouse. It included replacing the bathrooms and kitchen, and remodeling the living areas and bedroom. He added molding, touched up the walls, painted everything, repaired stair railing, retiled the bathrooms and kitchen, installed new cabinets and appliances in kitchen and bathrooms, and supervised subs redo the wood floors and reglaze the bathtub. Entire project took his team about 6 weeks.

Joe responded to my request for an estimate for my bathroom remodel in a timely fashion and made an appointment to see the job almost the next day. He, along with his team, worked quickly to draw up a plan and apply for the required permits. He kept me informed via email throughout the project, informing me of updates. He gave me accurate information regarding the time frame for the job and updated me throughout. His team was professional and courteous. Joe responded to my questions and concerns immediately, and was more than willing to make touch-ups if needed. The work was completed on time (if not early). I love my new bathroom - it's my favorite room in the house! I will be calling Joe in the future for my home improvement needs!

I had started on this project over a year in advance making sure to get it water proofed and insure myself against any kind of water damage that might occur. Once I had done that I contacted several different contractors and Hudson Home Improvement was one of the top rated contractors listed. To be honest at first I felt they were very overpriced and that Joe Shoback the head honcho was not too knowledgeable, but as I went further and did more research with other contractors I realized that Joe was actually the most honest and down to earth contractor I had come across. Being his price was so high, I hesitated between him and another contractor who was a bit cheaper. In the long run Joe had come down to a more reasonable figure and convinced me that he was on the up and up in as far as obtaining licenses and permits from local inspectors, whereas the other contractors sounded like they were willing to cut corners. Joe's sincerity and willingness to compromise with me as well as to go so far as to set me up with a lender whose rates were very reasonable, convinced me that he was the man for the job. As I got into more and more details with other contractors they went one of two ways with me...some said yes to everything as if they weren't really paying attention to me and some said they would call me back and never did ( I guess I kinda' scared them away). Joe listened to my concerns and went over all the details in a very professional and realistic manner, addressing each and every concern one at a time. Once I selected Hudson Home Improvement Joe gave me a detailed plan with a precise payment schedule which impressed me very much. After starting the job I felt it was important to let Joe know that I wasn't going to accept any old job done and so I let him know about what I felt was some sloppy caulking work done around a window. Joe was a little worried that I would be a pest about every little thing but I assured him that when I wasn't happy with something I would let him know. Well within a couple days the caulking issue was taken care of. In the beginning the workers showed up early and left late- a good 9 to 5 day. After the ND or RD week they started showing up later and leaving earlier. I wasn't too concerned about this because it was in the basement and wasn't putting me out much, besides I wasn't paying them by the hour. Also I had a wall unit and upgrade to my phone system that I wanted them to be around for in case there were any problems that might arise. The overall job probably could have gotten done a lot sooner if they had stayed on it on a full time basis. Joe's reason for the delay was my indecision on a lot of items such as changing the location of a office desk from one side of the basement to the other and making the general area from a Gym to a living quarters. Like I said it was not a major concern of mine until the last month of the project. As it turned out the wall unit and phone job did need some input from the Hudson Home Improvement team and I was glad there were still on the job. Initially Joe had said the project would take approximately 5 weeks to complete, instead it took 14 weeks. I will admit some of the fault was mine due to changes in plans like those I mentioned above and also the fact that I was convinced to install a new ceiling which I hadn't originally planned on. However I feel the work crew could have put in a full day's work to make it move a little faster. I was also somewhat dissatisfied with the debris left in the backyard. It was piled up in our backyard for a good part of that 14 weeks and I had to ask Joe to remove it several times before it was actually gone. I was also somewhat dissatisfied with the electrician who accidentally cut our cable TV line simply because he did not think it was being used for anything. We had a somewhat difficult time with the doorbell/intercom device and that may have been due to my not being clear enough as to exactly what I wanted done. There was also a problem with one of the lights, but all these problems were taken care of to my satisfaction in due time. These are all negative issues that arose, but to be honest Joe's experience in doing this kind of work led him to give me a forewarning that issues like this might arise, and they did. In Joe's defense he did address them and did the best he could to rectify them. I was very pleased with how much Joe was willing to go out of his way to be sure I was happy with the job. He worked with my Air Conditioning guy to set everything up for him to do a clean installation in the spring and I was glad to see them work so well together. Joe even went up on my roof one cold autumn Saturday morning to see what was the cause for some leaking in my mother's spare room which eventually was finding it's way down to the basement where the renovation was being done. Joe went so far as to clean out the drain and gutter on the roof! What a guy! Whenever I had a concern Joe was sure to get on top of it. One example is when I noticed that the floor people were installing something other than Pergo on the floor I called Joe that afternoon, by late afternoon he had showed up and told them to rip it out and install Pergo. They did and they stayed on the job until 7:00 p.m to finish it correctly. The same goes for a wall that was installed where I changed my mind earlier about having a wall installed there. Joe admitted the error and had it torn down within a day or two. We also had some concerns about a humming and vibrating noise that emanated from the house shortly after the electrical upgrade was done to the house. Although we still have never found out what the cause to that was, Joe had the electrician come back and check the hookup several times. He did all he could to try to find the root cause of the problem. Another issue that arose was after the rug and floor was all installed the ceiling was installed causing all kinds of dirt and debris to fall. Although Joe's guys did put plastic and paper on the floor to protect it a lot of the dirt got through it and caused the new floor to get dirty. Joe took care of this and on the last day literally came himself with one other worker and vacuumed and cleaned the floor himself! Where are you going to find someone who does that! I was impressed. Joe even went so far as to do his own research on several occasions to make the job go as smooth as possible for example, when he heard how concerned I was to make and keep the basement dry, he found out about this waterproof product called Platon which acted as a physical barrier between the walls and sheet rock. I agreed to go with it, Joe purchased it had his guys install it and it's has worked fine. We have had some heavy rains since then and not a drop in the basement! Despite the fact that Joe was on the expensive side he did try to save me money on several occasions like when it came to having a special cable hooked up between my TV and the computer he found a way whereby I could hookup my laptop and do the same thing for a lot less. He even came with me to Home Depot and helped me to select many of the bathroom items. I might also add that he found a neat way for me to get a 20% discount on my total Home Depot bill. When all was said and done the overall price of the job was very close to what was quoted even a slight bit less. So even though there were some glitches as I mentioned in the beginning of this report Joe did more than recompense for them. I called him the "Rock Super Star" of Home improvement on Angie's List and now after my experience with him I can see why he received such good ratings . He did a very big job for me and considering all that was done he did a pretty darn good job! I strongly would recommend Hudson Home Improvement to anyone considering a big job such as mine, but I must add that I think a lot of the success of this job was due to Joe Shoback's due diligence in following through on his word. He is truly a professional and a fine gentleman to do business with.

We love our new kitchen! Joe and his team were friendly, professional and timely! They finished our kitchen quickly as we were expecting our first child and needed it done asap. I trusted them completely and they were great with every detail and with communicating with us. We always got answers quickly and in many cases Joe worked with us and came up with great cost saving ideas. We plan to redo our bathroom next year and would only go with the Hudson team!
Description of Work: We gutted our kitchen and started from scratch. We replaced everything and made a few small structural changes.

Overall, my experience was excellant. Working with contractors can be difficult especially as a women. The entire team was very professional. They answered my questions and offered suggestions even for other small projects that I was doing without being condescending. I was very impressed that they paid attention to the details. I had the opportunity to "live with the work" for a few days and if I wanted any finishing touches, I just needed to ask. I had a few minor requests, and they promptly addressed them. Great quality and customer service.
Description of Work: Remodel kitchen including installation of cabinet, sink, granite countertop and glass tile backsplash. Also installed can lighting in kitchen and living room.

We had a flood from a broken pipe in the unit above us. The damage was quite extensive and included 60% of our ceiling and 25% of our interior walls needing to be ripped out. After Hudson Home Improvements finished it looked like nothing ever happened. They were totally honest, on time and more than ready to work with us to make sure that the job was done fully to our satifaction. You could not go wrong using them!!!!

Joe and his team were very professional. They got the work done in record time and came in under estimate. They left my apartment in very clean condition and worked well with the Super and condo association rules.
Description of Work: They came in and drywalled my entire apartment and put up new picture molding and floor molding. They also installed several light fixtures and replaced all of my electrical sockets/switches.

This is my first time buying an apartment and while I did not "gut" the space, it turned out that I had more to do in the apartment as I noticed while living here the first month or two, interviewing contractors (the only thing done by previous owner was installing new bathroom). I was sold on Hudson Home Improvement, president Joe Shoback, after speaking/interviewing a number of other contractors. I found Joe on Angie's list and was impressed that he called me back (yes, there are a number of people who start out not even returning calls or showing up when promised!). Joe met with me, listened to my ideas and offered his own or suggestions for what I was trying to achieve. This included advice on what was not needed or could be done in a more cost efficient way. He also steered me toward affordable, high quality options I knew nothing about, in selecting cabinets and some other material choices. It is not easy doing renovation work in Manhattan, working around coop work hours/rules and other challenges in the city. However, Joe and team worked well with staff and got the job in a reasonable time. His team is highly skilled and pleasant. The result? I am completely satisfied with my "new" new apartment. People who have seen the before and and after have commented on how terrific the place looks, accenting space and view. And, throughout this all, Joe stayed very attentive to the work and to me. He returned my calls and messages and communicated regularly. So, I was also very satisfied with Joe's professionalism and service. I highly recommend Hudson Home Improvement!
Description of Work: Remove "popcorn" ceiling throughout apartment, installed crown moulding & baseboards, put in a new kitchen (which included tearing out a pantry, tearing down some walls), put in two new wood 2 panel doors to replace old folding metal doors, built a cover for air/heating unit in 2 rooms and put in ceramic tiles and shelves around it, opened one other wall partially, installed new lights, added additional outlets, built a "cover" for an old "fuse" box and painted--all of this in a one bedroom (650 square foot) apartment, circa 1980, but limited work (other than bathroom) done by previous owner(s) in many years.

Joe and his team have done it again. We used Hudson Home Improvement for a bathroom renovation last year, and they did an impeccable job. We recently followed up with additional kitchen, bedroom and fireplace work, and they again exceeded expectations. The only issue with the job was a foul up by one of the tile providers (someone with whom I had a relationship). They shipped the wrong tile and were slow to exchange and replace the tile so that the job could be completed - Joe was in constant contact with the tile provider to push them to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. He took responsibility for the situation even though it was the tile provider's fault and my fault (for having selected this tile provider). My only worry is that Joe and his team will become so popular that they won't be at my beck and call when we're ready for our next project. Great contractors are tough to find. Joe is an honest, forthright and very nice guy who also has a team of very responsible skilled craftsmen. I highly recommend Hudson Home Improvement!
Description of Work: Joe and his team helped me select, and then installed a glass tile backsplash in our kitchen. They somehow managed to drill into bedrock to install our kid's closet in our basement. They installed tile in front of an 1880s fireplace, and installed lighting in our basement. No job was too small, and everyone task was completed by an exceptional craftsman.
