Description of Work: The foundation wall in my garage had cracks large enough to be a concern. I paid Mr. Shupenko $350 to come and evaluate any problems in a formal engineering report. I also paid him a $300 retainer for additional services that we anticipated . Anthony was quite professional, punctual and personable as well as very honest: he returned the $300 retainer to me because he said he would limit his involvement to the initial report since I would be better off with a firm specializing in soil engineering for the remainder of the project. He then referred me to another engineer he knew at Johnson Soils, a construction consulting firm, and we took it from there. As I told Anthony then, I would recommend him to anyone.

His inspection was very thorough. He was able to not only look at all the various aspects of the home but because he has an architectural engineering background, he was able to more thoroughly assess the structure of the home and identify some problem areas that allowed us to negotiate with the sellers to have that fixed. His report was very accurate in an interesting way that the sellers did not want to believe so they hired another inspector to come out and he totally backed up everything that Tony had said.

Tony was excellent. When we first put an offer in on the house, we knew that we wanted an inspector who had a background in structural engineering because of the age of the home. We got Tony's information from Angie's List. He was very prompt in responding to our phone calls and in setting up a time to inspect the home. He arrived on time to the home inspection. He was incredibly thorough. My husband, also an engineer, walked through the home with him while he inspected. He explained everything he was doing as he went through the home. He pointed out numerous concerns and explained what it would take to fix them. The inspection was on February 25. We had the report by February 27. He suspected that there was a fuel tank somewhere on the property that had not been decommissioned. We called out another company and he was right. His report was incredibly thorough. He was more expensive, but it was well worth it for what we got. Based on his report, we decided not to go through with the purchase. We are very thankful that we had him examine the home first. If we ever decide to purchase an older property again, we will definitely contact Tony.
Description of Work: Tony inspected a circa 1920s home that my husband and I were in the process of purchasing. He recommended another company to conduct the termite inspection.

Mr. Shupenko was very nice and professional on the phone and has terrific Angie's List rating so I was shocked at these mix-ups. I don't think he wanted to do the job (when he seemed indecisive on the phone I made a suggestion as an alternative to working on the problems itself); just write a professional report on what he thought might need to be done, for which I would pay him. Perhaps he discovered he was knew the complex's developer? I don't know what happened to him or why. At this point I have to speculate on what was the issue that prevented him from helping, since he would be paid for his opinion in a written report. Now I'm left with the problem (constant vibration in floors, which is no minor inconvenience--I can't live much longer with this issue) and have to go the process again of contacting more engineers and scheduling appts. I feel abandoned by this professional engineer and very discouraged about meeting with additional engineers. I hope they will be more honest about their interest or ability to deal with my condo problem.
Description of Work: Provider was a no-show for appointment. First appt.--on 5/17/13, he showed an hour outside my apartment building & when he couldn't reach me he left. Second appt.--on 5/22/13, he was scheduled to call me to set up appt for 23th or 24th. He didn't call or come. I wait at home all day for him. I haven't heard from him since.

Am yet to come across anyone who carries out such a detailed and thorough inspection. Customer service is top notch. With few hours of request Tony called back and we had inspection date finalized. On the scheduled inspection was already there before time and immediately got to the job with owners consent. Every step of the inspection he kept pointing potential issues and even educated me what is the cause of the issue. It took approx 4 hrs to complete inspection and Tony had already pointed out major structural and issues with the house. What amazes me is his in depth expertise in all aspects of construction. I felt as if he is buying house for himself. He was under the deck crawling, jumping over the roof, sneaking between the walls and wherever wasn't possible to visually inspection used his camera by sneaking his camera in to figure out what's in there. Am amazed and thankful to Tony for such a wonderful job done. Within 36 hrs I had the report. 35 pages report clearly highlighting issues both interior and exterior. Even seller is taken back knowing the number of issues he has in the house. I won't think second time if I have to avail Tonys services again. I would certainly recommend Tony to anyone seeking structural and Home inspection services. Thanks to Angie's list for enabling a platform to get to such a skilled and experts across the board.

Tony performed a home inspection on the house that I was very close to purchasing. He found structural defects from the house that I could not spot from visiting. He also suspected that 2nd floor of the house was raised. He is very professional, detailed, and also generate report very quick. Although he may charge more than other inspectors, he saved us whole lot of money by finding structural defects. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer. Highly Recommended!

Would I recomment Tony Shupenko of Shupenko Engineering Inc? Absolutely. My wife and I had a home inspection conducted in Bloomfield, NJ on a home we were under contract on. During the initial inspection, a home inspector pointed out some structural concerns but couldn't offer any additional insight because he wasn't a structural engineer. OK. So now I know of a potential structural issue, but still don't know anything about the structural integrity of the house. I needed an actual structural engineer. I found Tony Shupenko shortly thereafter and spoke with him on the phone. I explained my concerns, we discussed them in detail and I asked him to come to the house to look at the areas of concern. Tony showed up early, was very professional and gave me an in depth analysis on the current structure. We received his report and recommendations via email less than 48 hours after his visit. He also mailed a copy to us and our lawyer. I would definately recommend Mr. Shupenko's services. Knowing what I know now, I would have had Mr. Shupenko complete our whole home inspection right from the beginning. It would have saved us a lot of time, stress and effort. A+. -John and Lindsay

I would recomend Shupenko Engineering with complete confidence, and have since his work was completed with us. Tony inspected 2 homes for us personally. Even my real estate agent and lawyer were impressed with his expertise and thoroughness and have expressed they will recommend Shupenko Engineering services without hesitation. The first home we had inspected was a "fixer upper". We knew there would be issues, however Tony discovered problems with the home structurally and internally that helped us make an educated decision to walk away. His reports are very descriptive, and include pictures, which is extremely helpful during negotiations of repairs. Currently I have lived in my home for nearly 5 months. We survived hurricane Sandy. I can confidently say his inspection and held true. If I ever relocate, I will not purchase another home unless it passes the Shupenko inspection.

Very smooth without any issues. Tony got to the house before we did and started to inspect the exterior of the house, to get a jump start. He was happy to spend some extra time with us, answering any questions.
Description of Work: Tony came out to inspect a house my wife and I were interested in buying. His services as a structural engineer cost a bit more than a normal home inspector, but the quality and thoroughness is reflected in his written report. He went into great detail, pointing out potential issues that I missed during my walk though of the property. He knew exactly what to look for and spent time explaining both the pros and cons of the home's infrastructure. He took many pictures and went into great detail in the report, pointing out code violations and backing up his findings with data.

Tony was absolutely wonderful to work with. Although he was away on vacation when I reached out to him, Tony was still very responsive, got me on his schedule quickly. He was familiar with issues unique to Pompton Lakes (DuPont plume, high radon incidence, flood areas), and made sure I was likewise informed. On the day of inspection, Tony arrived early and had already begun reviewing the exterior condition of the home by the time my realtor and I arrived. He was very thorough in his inspection, and took the time to discuss with me in detail all areas of concern. Tony also went above and beyond by taking the time to explain to me how to operate the steam boiler - something with which I was completely unfamiliar. Although the inspection was on a Saturday, Tony still managed to have the report completed the next day. The report was 29 pages, and provided excellent detail about the issues with the home, as well as helpful information about building standards, and health and safety tips. I am a first time home-buyer, and have at times been overwhelmed by all of the things to consider in moving through the transaction. After having Tony inspect the home and property, I feel like I am in a position to make an informed decision about my purchase. I highly recommend Shupenko Engineering.

The experience was great. Tony was very responsive to my initial calls and coordinated even though he was leaving for a few days of vacation. On inspection date, he arrived early and was ready to start. He was extremely thorough and made multiple passes of areas to ensure he was providing right assessment. He also was great at answering questions from me as I tagged along and pointed out several things and explained what he saw. The inspection was several hours and even though it was extremely hot, he was patient and completed everything. He even identified a beam support issue based on time spent in crawl space. The end result was a very comprehensive report including pictures and even external references around guidance and standard practices. Overall, extremely happy with the decision and I would absolutely recommend him and would use him again.

After reading several reviews for home inspectors, I decided that my husband and I should contact Tony. He was unique in the fact that he has a background in engineering and that type of formal training was important to me. He answered his phone personally and returned any missed calls promptly. Tony arrived on site approximately 15 minutes earlier than our appointment and immediately started to inspect the property. Throughout the entire inspection, he was very thorough and involved my husband and I by explaining each issue to us in detail. He encouraged us to ask questions and seemed more than happy to spend extra time in any areas of the home that we had particular concerns about. He also made several recommendations on how to fix and prevent certain problems. The entire inspection lasted approximately 2 and a half hours. Tony prepared a 17 page report and sent it to us the next day. I will be recommending Tony to anyone I know who is purchasing a home.

As first time home-buyers, my husband and I wanted to find someone who could perform a thorough inspection so we could get a realistic picture about the home we were purchasing. We shied away from inspectors who said they could fully inspect the home in 2.5 hours or less. We also wanted to learn as much as we could from the inspection and wanted the inspector to take his time with the inspection. We chose Tony due to his positive reviews, and because of his engineering background (he is a licensed PE and also teaches at a university). Tony was punctual, very professional and amicable, allowing us to ask as many questions as we needed and offered some tips about maintenance and things to do in order to bring anything up to code. Tony worked from the exterior of the home inwards, and would circle back a few times in each area to check things he might have missed the first time around. He spent about 3 hours to do the inspection, although he probably would have kept going a little while longer if our agent hadn't mentioned that the sellers would be home soon. He was not able to do the radon test because the house was not closed in preparation for the test. Our agent was not pleased with this, but Tony was right not to perform the test since the EPA mandates a closed-house (not just closed basement) for the duration of the test. Overall, we were very pleased with his detailed report, which included images too further explain his comments and suggestions, and would recommend his services to others.
Description of Work: Tony performed a full home inspection of a single family, 2.5-story colonial house built in 1924 with an attic, partial basement, crawlspace, and a detached garage. His 21-page report covered both the interior and exterior of the house and the garage, covering each building's structural components (framing, walls, roofs/roof covers, floor/slabs), electrical/plumbing/heating systems (our home has window ACs), windows, chimney, masonry areas, as well as checking the deck, patio, porch, and basement/crawl spaces.

I turned to Angies list to find and inspector and was looking specifically for someone with a degree in engineering. My father is a professional engineer and I am familar with the level of detail and knowlege that an engineer can provide over a contractor type of home inspector. I called Tony and he was immediately responsive and worked with me on a convienent date and time to perform the inspection. After speaking with my father, I found out coincidentally that when my parents sold their house in 2005, Tony was the inspector for the buyer of the their house. My father commented that Tony found some problems with their house which cost my dad a bit of money to repair; I knew this was the guy for my inspection. The day of the inspection came and upon arrival Tony had already began the exterior inspection. I followed him throughout the process and he pointed out the issues that he found. Voila, on the second floor bedroom roof, Tony found the roof to be sagging (bowed) and in the interior of the room it could be seen that the ridge beam was sagging as well as the walls being out of plum. He explained that the when the ceiling was vaulted, it probably was not done correctly with a larger ridge beam when the collar ties were removed. Over time the change in the configuration weakened the structure and with year after year of snow on the roof, it caused it to sag and the walls to bow out. Upon the conclusion of the inspection Tony was gracious enough to even speak briefly with the seller explaining the roof situation and what he had found. This is why I hired and engineer for the inspection!! You may pay an extra few dollars for an inspection, but in my opinion the extra expertise is worth every penny!

We were in the market for an older home and wanted to make sure we had an extremely good sense of any issues we might face in owning such a structure. We had great concerns about hiring the right inspector because we didn't want just a cursory look around, we wanted a deep, critical assessment of the house in an unvarnished report. It was exactly this level of detail and critical review that drove us to choose Anthony Shupenko. Tony is an engineer by training and brings an awesome level of knowledge and experience to each inspection. Tony's price for an inspection is worth every penny and he defines the saying "you get what you pay for". Tony inspected two homes for us. The first was a 100+ year old Victorian that we knew would need some updating but appeared to be in generally good repair. I spent 4 1/2 hours with Tony on inspection day evaluating the structure and all home systems in extreme detail. His thoroughness uncovered foundation, water penetration, and considerable structural issues with an attached deck and large wrap around porch. Tony's highly detailed and unvarnished 25 page report with pictures helped us decide that the repairs required to the items that we could see were way beyond what we wanted to tackle. Needless to say, when we found another home we called Tony again. Not only was Tony highly responsive, he worked with us to get the inspection scheduled within the very tight timeline we had to work within. Again, Tony's inspection was impeccable. He identified required repairs as well items that should be remedied over time. He explained items that are acceptable given the age of the home, but what the current code requires for homes built today. As the first reviewer noted, Tony's evaluation is so comprehensive it provides an outstanding workbook for maintaining and upgrading your home. After using Tony we heard from several real estate agents who had personally used Tony as well and all had the same rave review of his work I have outlined here. In fact, our own agent said that most home sellers that are given a report after Tony inspects their house are not prepared for a "Shupenko Inspection". I couldn't agree more. If you want to make sure that you go into a home purchase with your eyes wide open, pay the extra money and hire Tony Shupenko. You may be sorry if you don't. Tony ultimately saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars by opening our eyes on the first home. We are currently completing the purchase of the second home Tony inspected, but we know exactly what we are getting and how to prioritize any work we may choose to do.

Tony Shupenko did a fabulous job for us. He was prompt, professional and incredibly thorough. We used Tony twice. He inspected two condos we wanted to buy. He saved us from buying the first property by identifying a defective foundation and the related water and mold issues. Had we gone through with the purchase, we would have been dealing with major structural repairs. The second condo had some warts (which Tony reported to us), but no major flaws. We have been using Tony's report to repair the items he raised. We have not found any material defects that were not in Tony's report. Another plus was that Tony worked with us. We had to move and did not have a lot of time to wait for a report. He sent us complete written reports the next day. The reports were detailed documents stating his findings, explanations of the issues, and documenting photos. The guy was incredible. He wasn't the cheapest (other inspectors charged $300), but we got our money's worth, and then some. He took his time to do the inspection, and made himself available to answer our questions. After watching another home inspector inspect the home we sold, I wouldn't use anybody else.
Description of Work: Home inspection in advance of condo purchase. We used Tony twice. The second time after not buying the first condo based on his inspection. Very professional!
