This was a pretty small job. Probably the kind of thing that most wouldn't bother with. That said, Dave came over (we played a little phone tag) and gave me a price. Wasn't sure when he could do it, since he needed to flexibility to fit it between bigger jobs, but came the next day......I had been waiting for more than a year to get this work done by my general contractor. Dave was very professional and the work was done quickly and seems to be of high quality.

Description of Work: Dave did a fantastic job of repairing the chimneys at my residence. He was very courteous, professional, and patiently answered my questions. I had read such good things about Dave's work on Angie's List that he was worth waiting for. He is the best and his work far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend him without hesitation. pam pelton

I initially contacted this vendor first week in May 2014. Since he was highly rated here on Angie's List, I thought I'd be fine. I called and left a message, but didn't get a response until mid-May, over a week later to respond?! That should have been a huge red warning flag, that this vendor would NOT be reliable. Anyways, he finally came down on May 20, 2014 to look at job and write up quote. I waited, and waited, and waited. I didn't get the quote until almost a month later (on June 18, 2014)! His first quote was the wrong height (4 foot high, not the 6 foot high I wanted). But that price was lowest, by far, of all the quotes I had previously gotten. I thought perhaps since his quote was only 4 foot high, and my other quotes were 6 foot high, that would account for some of the discrepancies in price. I asked for a new quote with correct height of 6 feet. That quote was still great (compared to others I had gotten). Even with the correct height, he was about 40% less than next lowest quote I had gotten. I figured their had to be a mistake, and asked if his quote included materials. Yes, was response. I had a choice of two colors, and two styles. I was instantly sold. I asked for some references (I could call), along with wanting to see a few samples of recent jobs. After checking out references and some recent jobs in person, I decided I wanted to hire him, and asked him about schedule. The date was June 26, 2014. He said he could probably start in 6-7 weeks. A bit longer that what I wanted to wait, but the price was too good to pass up. So I agreed to an August 11, 2014 start date, and asked what next steps are (e.g. contract, deposit, etc) and if he could send me proof of insurance. After a couple of weeks I got the proof of insurance. I pinged him several times after we verbally agreed (June 26, 2014) because I wanted something in writing (e.g. contract, deposit, etc). I also needed something from the block manufacturer (showing that it was OK for a 6 foot high wall) for my local building permit. I never did get anything from him. On July 30, 2014, this vendor ask me to send him the quote. I was puzzled. He wanted me send him back the quote that he had initially sent me?! Did he lose it? Oh well, I sent it to him any way. By August 4, 2014 I still didn't have anything in writing, so I pinged vendor again. He said he never got my email (with his quote). So I sent again. His response, "I AM SORRY I DID NOT FIGURE THIS ESTIMATE CORRECTLY I CAN NOT PROVIDE YOU WITH MY SERVICES AT THIS TIME" Say what!? I've been waiting all summer long, and you wait until a week before you're supposed to start to tell me this? I was fuming!! I called him the following day, August 5, 2014. He tells me he's very sorry, but personal issues have affected him deeply; which, in turn, have caused him to make this mistake. The correct price for the job will be approximately double of his original quote. Are you kidding me? Is this your first wall? Haven't you been doing this for awhile, and have at least a rough ballpark of what a job like this typically runs? After a long talk, I say I have too much time invested & thus don't want to abandon everything. Can you redo quote I ask. He agrees, and says that I'll have it within 48 hours. Same as before, I never got it. I'm done chasing this guy down. I'd STRONGLY suggest everyone avoid this vendor until he can get personal issues resolved.
Description of Work: Quote was to replace existing wood retaining wall with cement block wall. Current wall is approx. 2 1/2 feet high, and new wall was to be 6 feet high.

Response from D R Custom Masonry
This type of review merits almost no response except for me to emphasize that I chose not to work for this man. For professional reasons I will not explain further. The personal issue that is mentioned in this review is that my dear wife of almost 29 years passed away suddenly last year just a few months before this contact was made. I am confident that based upon my regular customers' reviews that this one will be disregarded and left in a separate category.

David and sons arrived on time, were very clean and finished the job in record time. They first ripped out the old mantel around a gas fireplace and then installed some 12 " and 4" slate tile in it's place. The tile extends from the floor to the 9' ceiling and looks spectacular. I worked with Tile Gallery in Nashua (also wonderful people to work with) to pick out and order the tile. The tile is not included in the above price. I also purchased a new floating mantel (separately) that David is installing as well. His son Jeremiah was onsite for most of the installation and he's also terrific. A very articulate, friendly young man and also very talented. I highly recommend D R Custom Masonry. I'm actually going to have them do a shower stall renovation for me in the near future.

D. R. Custom Masonry was hired to inspect my wood stove chimney and give a second opinion as to its overall health. Dave showed up on time, inspected one chimney liner and said it was in good condition (contrary to the first contractor I hired). He did recommend some minor exterior repairs to two chimneys which he did on time and at the price he quoted. What a pleasant experience to deal with someone that responsible, on time and honest. Thanks Dave!

I would highly recommend D R Masonry to anyone that needs this type of work done. Dave, the owner was very professional, courteous and above all punctual. He arrived at two in the afternoon with his helper and by four thirty the staging was set up and the total chimney was torn down. I was amazed at the hard work both had put out in that short period of time. I was also very pleased with the cleaning up process where no mess was left on the premises. I am an elderly widow who had to contend with finding someone honest, reliable, professional and courteous to repair my chimney it was leaning over and had holes and missing cement in between the bricks. My husband use to take care of all the house repairs so needless to say I didn't know where to turn to. My son suggested I sign up on Angie's List and look for a business that could do this type of work so I did. This was the best move I ever made because I was able to read the reviews of different establishments to see customer comments. I received four estimates for the same type of work, which ranged from $2500.00 to $1100.00. D R, had all great reviews but I still was a bit leary until I met Dave, himself he told me all that had to be done and how he was going to do it. There would be NO HIDDEN COSTS. I TRUSTED him from that moment on and to me and my family as well as my friends who have seen the work that he has accomplished we have all agreed that he stands for Honesty, Integrity, Professionalism and Courtesy. As a customer I want to say that I received 100% total Customer Satisfaction. I made the right choice and thank God for people like Dave, D R Masonry, who are extremely HONEST. Thank You,

My chimney had many cracked bricks, loose mortar, a worn out cap, and bad flashing. They were able to show and explain the problems clearly, followed by quoting simplest most cost effective means to solving the problems, without replacing the whole chimney. The work was done as agreed upon in a professional, timely manner, and the results were effective in solving all of my problems and giving back, for all practical purposes, a brand new chimney. I would not hesitate to use DR Custom Masonry in the future and would recommend them to others!

I contacted D R Custom Masonry for an estimate and he showed up when he said he would. He quoted me $1,200.00 to do the job based on replacing three lengths of flue lining. He came on the date he said he would to do the work, discovered that only two lengths of lining needed to be replaced. He explained that some time needed to pass before he could seal the work and complete the project. The work was completed a week later and he emailed me a final bill of $1,150.00 minus one length of lining. The bill only listed the work done and material used with a final cost. It was not broken down with cost per item and labor rate. The work was done to satisfaction and the work was quality work. I would recommend this company and if need be use for future work.

I started with Angie's List to find a masonry company, and DR Custom was the best choice in terms of response, the estimate on the price of the job, and their grasp of the work that I wanted done.
Description of Work: DR Custom repaired the top of my chimney, installed a new cap, cleaned and sealed the chimney, and dug out the footing to seal it against water leakage. It was a little hard to schedule with them because they finish a job before moving on to the next customer, but when they said they were coming, they were there and worked until sundown to complete the job, including cleaning everything up.

Very responsive when I asked for an estimate. Received the estimate by email, and approved it. My wife and I wanted some additional work done, and asked for an additional estimate. We were told they would estimate it at the start of the major work, and we set a date for mid June. Mid June came and went, and after no word for 3 weeks, I contacted them by email. They apologized and said that they had gotten extremely busy, but that they would begin on July 17. I received an evening call on July 16, telling me they would be out the next day. They were, and they completed the job, in spite of the extreme daytime temperatures, in 5 days. The work was top-notch. They found why my roof had been leaking around the chimney, and corrected the original builder's mistakes. The additional work was done at a reasonable price, and completed before they left. They cleaned up the site before they left, and were very careful about avoiding chance breakage from debris. I've spent 30 years in and around construction, and have rarely come across a mason of this caliber. All in all, a very good experience.
Description of Work: Removed and rebuild chimney properly from roof line up. (The original mason had left a brick ledge below the roof line, and then never used it to support the chimney. This caused the original chimney to be offset from the ridge line by a few inches, leaving a pocket for rainwater to collect after the chimney was built. Improper flashing by the original mason, roofer, and subsequent roofers, did not correct the problem. David found the ledge when he removed the old chimney, and used it when he built the new one. Now, no more pocket.)Re-flashed the chimney properly.Washed down interior feild stone fireplace stained with calcium deposits from years of seepage through the old brick chimney.Installed a new chimney cap.

David was very personable, pleasant and friendly. He came over to give us a quote and arrived when he said he would. He took about a week to get us a quote which was a little longer than he originally stated, but a good sign that he was busy. I followed up on his references from fellow contractors and home owners who were very happy with both David as a person and his work. When coming in the house to work on the fire box, he was very respectful of being neat and unobtrusive and after completion, his work looks great. However there were some shortcomings: 1) He wasn't able to commit to exactly when he could do the work (he provided a 3 week window when he would do the 2 day job, however it wasn't done for almost 5 weeks); 2) He used some bricks that I had leftover from another project...which means that as a mason doing chimney work, he didn't arrive with enough bricks to do a small job which he had already scoped out in person; and 3) A while after he completed the job I found a pile of discarded mortar underneath a bush in the side yard near the chimney. Although I did not see him dump it and therefore I can't be positive it was from him, it appears new and I don't know where else it would have come from.
Description of Work: I had the upper 6 layers of bricks removed and rebuilt/replaced. In addition, Dave put new caps on the top, sealed the entire chimney and made some small repairs inside the fire box.
