The brick chimney on my 55-year-old house had missing and loose bricks, crumbling mortar, and severe staining. Also, when the house was reroofed five years ago, the roofers did not do a proper job of installing flashing against the chimney. I first contacted Dave Robinson mid-summer, and he came out to examine the project. Initially he thought he could get to it in late August but he then said it would be sometime in October. As it wasn't an emergency (I had, after all, been living with this for years), that was OK with me. Dave and his crew arrived in early October and, over two days, did a great job repairing the chimney, reinstalling the flashing properly (so that the top of the flashing was embedded in the mortar, and then sealed it all with a breathing sealer. Perhaps my only gripe was that communication was intermittent, especially by email, but he did respond and did the work he quoted for the agreed-upon price. I have attached before and after photos. I'm very happy with his work and plan to call on Dave again when I am ready to install a fireplace insert (as the interior of the chimney needs work.)

David was professional and takes pride in his work, ensuring that the job is done correctly. You’ll have to wait your turn for services because he’s busy, but that’s typical for any good contractor. Response time for initial project coordination can sometimes be slow, but services performed as promised (schedule, scope, and price). Already asked for a quote to do more work...

David is incredible to work with and was spot-on with pricing. Once he started work he was in constant communication and gave us daily updates. The work area was always left clean, and he was extremely helpful when a large amount of unexpected termite damage was found. We are thrilled with the finished product and will be contacting him again for any future work.

David was great to work with. We communicated by email, phone and in-person and he was always very quick to respond and answer any questions I had. David and his crew re-built the top layers of our chimney, inserted a liner to our water heater, poured a concrete cap and sealed/waterproofed the brick. At the end of the job he actually came in $300 under the amount originally estimated. David clearly takes great pride in his work and we are very pleased and impressed with the repairs. I highly recommend D.R. Custom Masonry to anyone looking for similar services.

The construction of a brick hearth for the basement wood stove was straightforward. The job was performed quickly, and the end result more than met my expectations. The laying of a tile floor was a bit more complicated. I'd had a couple of contractors come out to look at it, and due to the uneven concrete floor they recommended I find a good tile guy. I mentioned the problem while getting an estimate for the hearth, and David scoped it out, gave me a reasonable estimate for tiling as well. The floor was put in over the course of a week, including detailed cutting of the terra cotta tile for the edges and the floor drains. The result: I now have a truly fantastic tile floor in the basement. The whole crew did an incredible job. It looks great!

I did not have to call to remind him he called me on Tuesday and asked if the following day was convenient, it was. I had forgotten to mention, when he came and inspected, about a hole in the concrete floor through which the previous owners drained their washing machine through a pipe in to a brook that runs at the side of the property, don't ask,. I texted him and sent a photo and asked if that could be filled in as well. Kyle did an excellent job, it took 1 1/2 days, and also the clean up was excellent. I shall have no hesitation in using this company again.
Description of Work: The brick work and stucco in the basement of my old house was crumbling. David came and took a look, he responded immediately through Angies List, and recommended to remove the stucco and replace. He told me he wouldn't be able to come till winter when he would be able to then do indoor work which was fine by me.

Dave was so busy, we actually had to wait about a month until he could get to our project - but since it was an outside project, and not interfering with things, we could do that. We also felt that he was worth our patience and trust. In the end, we were right and he completely exceeded our expectations in all categories. Dave works with 1-2 other guys that he supervises, and did that throughout the 2 week length of the project. He arrived to remove the concrete stairs and begin demo on our asphalt walkway - as well as remove the large pavers from our back walkway. That allowed me to have a weekend to repair and replace some rot around our front entryway before the stairs were installed, which I did. Interestingly, I was scheduled to be on a business trip out of the country the first full week he was there to do work, so I left explicit instructions for him. That trip was cancelled, but the that went far in getting them started on their work. What stood out for me as things progressed in the beginning of the project was Dave's 1) respect for us and our property, always meticulously cleaning up before he left each night, 2) trust that we had with him for always doing what he said he would do, and 3) integrity to do things the right way, not taking shortcuts. What stood out the most as I had a very busy work week and could only give the project minimal attention, was how at ease my wife felt with Dave. In fact, she trusted him to the point of feeling comfortable enough to leave our house open to him to use the bathroom and help himself to bottled water, and leaving the house open to him while she left to do errands. That is rare and unusual with contractors and others, and really spoke volumes about Dave's character. The project progressed very quickly - even given constraints that we had...no work on Tuesdays, as my wife hosts a group of women each week. As Dave worked on the project, he brought a few ideas to me to improve the project, which I welcomed. In fact, he had my full trust to the point that I told him, "Do what you think is best, how you would do it on your home." He did not let me down, as his ideas - however seemingly small and minor, improved the outcome of the project. A great example of this was the installation of the front granite stairs. I had done some repair work around the front entrance and replaced some trim. Dave looked at it and explained the way he would install the stairs to make them look best, but that it may involve undoing some of the work that I did. I trusted him to do that, and it proved to be a great decision. He installed a weather barrier, and had the stairs cut in a special way to butt right up against our house for more of a custom, high-end look. He then cut and installed new trim and new J-channels, making the installation look that much better. Within 2 weeks, he had completed the project - which would've been less if not for our constraints. Once he got going, he worked hard and put in long days to move things along. As I stated before, we were not only impressed with his work ethic and character, but how we didn't have to "ride" or "babysit" him to ensure things were completed in the way that we wanted. He went above in beyond in every aspect of this project and he more than met our expectations. We completely and wholeheartedly recommend him for any masonry work or project that you are contemplating. Once you work out the timing of when the project will happen - and sometimes you may need to wait (he is very busy), you will not be disappointed. We are glad we waited for him to do our project and know that you will be to!
Description of Work: We decided this year that it was time to address our home curb appeal and outside hardscaping needs. To prepare, we removed all plantings in front of the house to have better access to work on the project. We then had a handful of landscapers to our home to give us estimates to remove and replace our existing 4' wide concrete stairs with 6' wide granite stairs, a front asphalt walkway 3' wide x 60' long with brick pavers and widened to 4', and a back walkway 3' x 30' long with matching pavers. After receiving estimates and debating whether we could do the entire project within budget, we remembered Dave Robinson (DR Custom Masonry) had given us a great estimate to build a chimney a few years back that we couldn't do at the time. We had Dave back out and not only did he give us a great estimate to do all of the work, we felt an immediate trust and rapport with him - and thus decided to go with him.

David’s work is impeccable. The work took about 12 hours beginning on Friday evening, all day Saturday, and a few hours to finish on Sunday morning. We knew the damage was extendive and would require a true professional to repair our chimney. David worked diligently, cleaned up debris, and was always cheerful. We are happy more than words can express.

He gave me a detailed contract, the evaluation, cause and resulting estimate. The price was a bit on the higher side but considering the quality of work, the price was reasonable. All the front granite step, which were rather heavy needed to be manually removed, and proper base material needed to be installed. And then the granite steps needed to be re-installed to their original height. Railings along the stairs also were removed and reinstalled. I did have to wait a long to schedule the work to be completed ( several months) but that was the only drawback to the whole process. Otherwise, the steps look great.

David came out and provided an estimate and inspection of the issue. He determined that it was likely caused by water getting into the top of the chimney and the contracting/retracting of the ice is probably what caused this (no evidence of a chimney fire...this is property I don't live in, so I wouldn't necessarily know this). I got 3 estimates and his was the lowest. He came out when he said he would to do the work and it was completed within a week (sealer was put on a few days after the work was done). He ended up relaying about 10 bricks, tightening flashing and sealing the chimney, thus fixing the issue and preventing it from happening again. The only issue we had appears to on Angie's List's side -- where I was sending him messages and he was receiving them, but I would only receive every 3rd message or so from him. Very frustrating for both of us...as it seemed like he wasn't replying, when in fact he was. He has since contacted Angie's List to have them look into it so it won't happen again. So my advice would be that if you don't hear back from him within a day or 2, call him or put your phone number at the bottom of your email - as soon as I did that he called me the same day.

Great. We live on a hill and thought they would destroy our yard having to drive over it with the weight of all the bricks. They managed to get everything cleared safely from a side road we thought impassable. They also evened the concrete basement floor that was damaged beneath the hearth. Finally, they capped the foundation. The layout is much better for a family room. The fireplace was unusable, and a gas fireplace would make the room too hot. A first floor gas fireplace will be a much better option. I am so grateful to not have to worry about the damaged chimney falling, and no more cold draft from the flue! Really wonderful and professional.

I had a brick fireplace that went 3/4 of the way up the wall. I wanted to be able to place my TV over the fireplace, but there wasn't enough wall space. Dave redid the fireplace with a gorgeous cultured stone so it went all the way to the ceiling and replaced the tile flooring in front of the fireplace. Dave was all I could have hoped for and more. He was very professional and reliable. He gave great advice and suggestions for what would look best (I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted) and he sent me options to choose from. He was very accommodating on timing and readily available to answer questions. His work was top notch. The before and after picture is striking. Not only was his masonry work all I could have asked for, but he also assisted with mounting the TV onto the stone. He left the place clean and tidy and was all-around wonderful. Dave is also a dog person so it was wonderful that my dogs didn't have to be locked up for days while he worked. I would highly recommend Dave and his team for all of your masonry needs and already am looking around the house for additional fixed or improvements I could use him for in the future.

Chimney on the house was leaning and close to collapse. Other chimney companies wanted to tear it down and rebuild it to the tune of close to $10,000. After a careful inspection of the brickwork and the foundation, Dave felt the chimney was sound & could be saved. He and an assistant propped it up with a clever use of lumber while he had a metal bracket fabricated. After a few weeks, he returned and installed the bracket and touched up the flashing to ensure it was water tight. D R Masonary was fast, professional, and saved me many thousands of dollars on a task others would not approach short of demolition. We couldn't be happier with result.
