Dedicated to your home comfort since 1970. The roots of McCarthy’s One Hour start when John McCarthy Sr. was let go in 1970 from his first job with a small air conditioner repair company – for refusing to overcharge a customer.
John took advice from his wife Mary Kay and mother-in-law and started his own business. Armed with only $200 in working capital and an old rusty truck he purchased from his banker, he set out to serve the heating, air conditioning and overall home comfort needs of Omaha residents.
Mary Kay was with him every step of the way, taking phone calls and setting appointments to keep her husband busy. Together, they worked long hours, paid careful attention to details, and followed a simple motto that remains a focal point of the company today: “Urgency and accountability: every detail is important, and it’s everybody’s job to get it right.”
After many years of service McCarthy's One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning is still servicing the Omaha metro area with about 45 employees. John and Mary Kay McCarthy are still very much apart of the business; Mary Kay still helps in the call center and John Sr is there to help in training the technicians to uphold their high standards.

Installations and maintenance of residential ac, heat pumps, furnaces, humidifiers, duct cleaning, home scans, air analysis & zoning. Other Services Offered: Plumbing and Electrical
The first time I called them when I first moved into this house I found them in the phone book after talking to other service providers. They were the only ones who could come out the same day. They’re very accommodating, professional, on-time and are good at what they do. They’re also very personable and have done a good job maintaining my unit including compressor components, etc. I have recommended their services to other frequently.
Description of Work: They came to perform an AC tune-up and checked the pressure. I’ve been using their services for about 20 years. We are covered under an annual service contract with them.

Terrible! Either their technician was incompetent or a crook! His assessment of the problems were proven totally wrong by a different company and minor repairs were made very inexpensively. And then McCarthy tried to charge me $100.00 for the bogus diagnosis!

The technician called ahead and asked if he could arrive early. This company never has a "window of time" that they will arrive, they have an appointment and they stick to it. Jared introduced himself, showed me his badge, and asked how things were going since his last visit. He asked if I had any problems with my unit or any cooling or heating problems in the house that I would like addressed. He asked if I would like to watch him work and I said, "no." He invited my dog to join him as he went about his business cleaning the air conditioner, checking the thermostat, and cleaning the outdoor unit. It is a wonderful service to have...and it's FREE!
Description of Work: I am a member of their service club and today was my check up and they came to service my air conditioner. However, previously I have used them for other services and they are very professional and honest about what I need. I am never upsold on any products or services and the technician always takes his time and is very careful to clean up after himself. He wears booties in the house, he explains everything he is doing, and makes me aware of where he will be if I don't want to follow him. I have had only positive and superior service from this company.

We have been very pleased with them. We used to use another company who was my husband’s uncle. They obviously did a great job and everything but we changed to Mc Carthy as his uncle just retired. We had to find somebody else and that time our furnace got shot as it was the original furnace in the house. Our uncle had done fix for us and said that it could last for ten days or ten years as he didn’t know. We wanted to go with Mc Carthy as they came and gave us a presentation and at that time they had that if you got a heat pump there was some benefit financially. They really do very good work. They are prompt.

The McCarthy salesperson sold us a new heat pump system. According to his figures, we'd pay for the heat pump in energy savings in approximately 8 years. McCarthy installed the system professionally, but when they left, I had a terrible rattle that could be heard throughout the house. I called twice to have someone come out and fix it, but each time they left and I still had the rattle. I eventually traced it down to a vent that had been bent by the installers which was rattling against another vent. A piece of plastic tubing between the vents killed the rattle. Why couldn't the "master techs" from McCarthy figure this out? Within 30 days of the installation, the heat pump failed. McCarthy came out and replaced parts, and it failed again within 2 days. More parts were replaced. These parts were installed incorrectly which caused the large outside blower fan to run backwards which caused the control system to overheat. Within a week, the outside control system for the heat pump started on fire (this was on the outside unit, fortunately) and the system failed again. The control system was ordered but was apparently on backorder, as it took a couple of weeks to get it fixed. We had at least two more failures within the next few months, but eventually the McCarthy techs were able to get things working reliably. There was one tech in particular who seemed to understand how HVAC systems worked and when he was finally assigned to our case, things worked. But we went through at least 5 other techs that seemed to have no real understanding on how HVAC worked. After having the unit a year, my wife did an analysis of energy savings, only to discover that it would take 40-50 years to pay for the heat pump with energy savings. McCarthy did issue us a check for 1 year of the difference, but we were informed that that was all they were responsible to do. I have to give them kudos for making us right for 1 year of missing energy savings, but fixing 1 year and sticking us with the next 39 years of non-savings didn't sit well with us. Bottom line: McCarthy was professional (if somewhat inexperienced) in installation. Sales was, at best, confused about math and at worst, dishonest. None of their "savings" figures should be believed. Repair was horribly trained and apparently installed the components for the system incorrectly at least twice. And they didn't understand how two vents bent together could cause an annoying rattle that could be heard throughout the house, nor how those vents could be fixed by just separating them with a bit of plastic. Oh and remember that when you purchase a system from McCarthy, you are required to pay them at least $200 per year for their "maintenance" ongoing, otherwise they will void the factory warranty. Update: October 2013: We've had great experiences with the maintenance techs from McCarthy for the last few years, so maybe this company is getting better. Or maybe pre-sales and install are still terrible and the ongoing repair and maintenance techs are great, I don't know. Caveat emptor. Update: June 2014: More good experiences with the maintenance folks. Maybe McCarthy should hire more maintenance techs to fill the sales and installation jobs. I wouldn't ever purchase another unit from McCarthy, but I wouldn't complain if I had to have McCarthy maintain something I already had.

For a company that brags and prides itself on putting the customer first it seems it is just a slogan and not fact! Here is my situation: I won a FREE furnace system check in November. I asked if they worked on Heat Pumps and I was told yes. The technician was not able to come out till early December. The young man was friendly, but seemed to be more interested in getting me to sign up for the VIP Plan. A week later we had outside temperatures in the -5 range. My house would only get up to 60 degrees and that included having a portable heater running in the living room. Another technician came out discovered a wire from the furnace to the thermostat had NEVER been connected. This wire is part of the system that allows auxiliary heat to be added to the furnace system. I was only charged $99 for the wiring analysis. I had another technician come to the house on May 13, 2011 because the house was not cooling properly. The technician said the freon level was low. I was charged $376 for the service call and freon. A few days later we had another cold snap and I put the system back into heat mode. This is when I discovered the outside unit was not working properly. It would run for 5 minutes, shut off, wait 5 minutes, restart for 1 minute, shut off again, and then not come on again. I contacted customer service and explained my situation and provided a spreadsheet of data to assist them with determining what the problem might be. The customer service representative replied she was forwarding the information to Quality Control and would get back to me. NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME! Based on their radio show stating the customer comes first and if the customer is unhappy with any work done they would review the complaint and if necessary give a FULL REFUND. I looked on their website for information on how to start this process. NO WHERE on the website is there any information on how to request a refund. In summary: It seems to me that if a customer is unhappy then this company stops corresponding with the customer. I am sure, if they do reply to this review, they will say “Oh this customer just slipped through the crack”. My comeback would be: They knew I was unhappy with the way my system is not working properly and I should have been put on a list to follow up with on a daily basis IF THE CUSTOMER TRULY COMES FIRST! It also seems to be the last technician should have done a FULL system check to make sure everything was working, not just recharge the freon level. I feel I was paying TOP DOLLAR for their expertise and I got a lot less. With almost $500 paid to this company you would think I would have a working system! I you decide to go with this company I hope you have better service than I got.
Description of Work: I have had three (3) technicians from this company work on my system starting in early December up to May. System is still not working properly and the company will not reply to my requests for assistance. UPDATE: After a lot of exchanging of emails One Hour Heating agreed to come work on my system again. They sent a young technician and the head of Quality Control to check look at my heat pump. Turns out the technician who put Freon into the system OVER charged the system by over 50%. The QA person said the system would work okay in AC mode, but in heat mode would have damaged the outside unit. The QA person said "I saw in the report how much Freon he put in and I knew that was too much." The thing I don't understand is why didn't he send someone out to correct the problem. Did he just want to wait till it got damaged and then have me pay a MAJOR repair bill? Today the outside temperature was in the low single digits. The outside unit would NOT shut off. Heat Pumps do not work efficiently at low temperatures and the Aux Heat function of the heat pump should do the heating and not the outside unit. It was not working this proper way. I contacted One Hour Heat and told them of the problem. They said they would be happy to send a 5th Technician out to work on the system for a cost. You would think a company would stand behind their work. There has been 4 technician out in less than a year and the system still doesn't work properly and they feel they have no responsibility to make it right. I would NEVER have One Hour work on your system..... Not worth the trouble. Call a different company. As a side note: They advertise they will pay you $5 for every minute they are late. DOESN'T work that way. If they are late they will say "Did you pay for the guarantee on time function?" Of course you didn't because they don't tell you that you have to choose that option. So the $5 guarantee is just a gimmick. I would be surprise to see if they have ever paid out a single $1 for being late.

In the midst of a nasty, sub-zero cold spell in January, we called several places one night (starting at 8 pm) because the temperature in the house was dropping lower and lower despite the furnace running. Only McCarthy's was willing to add us to their call list (which, like other companies in town, was a long list). Their service rep couldn't come out until around midnight, and it took until 2 a.m. but he was able to get a work-around on the problem until the new part could come in. In additional to all of this, they looked up our furnace by the serial number and found it was still under manufacturer's warranty. We paid for the service call as well as a service plan. I remember thinking it was a bit pricey, but we knew it was for an emergency visit in bad weather and at an awful time of night, and we were pleased that they serviced us so well. Over this past weekend the problem recurred despite a new part having been installed. It was a rough weekend all around -- my husband had bronchitis, I'd pulled a muscle in my neck, our clothes dryer wasn't working and the deadbolt lock on the front door was broken! We called McCarthy's on Monday morning and they had a service tech come out that afternoon. The service tech had looked up all of the information and had talked with the tech who had serviced us in the January crisis. There was concern that the circuit board might not be functioning correctly. Indeed, the circuit board was the problem. The service rep identified the problem, went out and got the replacement circuit board (returning within about 30 minutes) and explained that the new part was covered under the warranty. What was more, they weren't charging us for the service call because they felt it was an appropriate follow-up from the visit a month earlier. They said they believe in customer satisfaction. After all of the disappointments of the weekend, the news from McCarthy's nearly brought me to tears! I'm so glad we found them; I'm so glad we signed on with them. They demonstrated excellent communication and attention to the service details so that they could fix the problem, and they demonstrated integrity in their service ethic.
Description of Work: Furnace was running but not heating (temp was about 65 degrees in the house). They had come out for this same problem about a month earlier and ended up replacing some kind of switch that was bad. The tech then though the circuit board might be the problem but the replacement switch seemed to fix things. This time the tech inspected everything again, then tested the circuit board and found it to be faulty. He replaced it, reset the control box, and made sure it was functioning properly. Everything was done in about 3 hours.

During an annual furnace check the serviceman said there was a hairline crack in our unit, thus causing a high CO2 reading (high for a furnace - but not at dangerous levels). We had functioning CO2 detectors, which were not alarming. He said he was required to shut down our furnace, so he turned the gas off at the source. The temps had dropped and we were already running our furnace, so we were without heat for a night. Of course they had a sales rep. available that very day. We purchased a heat pump and furnace, they scheduled install 2 days later on a Saturday. The temps dropped, so we asked for some portable heaters, they dropped off 2. During the install they had some trouble running a pipe out through the basement ceiling, and they broke some ceiling tiles. They had to call-in another installer to help with some electrical problems. Someone came to pick-up the portable heaters early because a NE football game was starting so the man was getting off work for the game! It ended up being 3 more hours before they were finished b/c they were having install problems, so we were without heat again that afternoon. They were having a problem with some electrical wiring, so they ended-up using duct-tape to connect some wiring inside, and they left all the wiring for the heat pump out in our yard, with plans to schedule an electrician after the weekend. They were not able to connect the heat pump the day they installed. They did not schedule an electrician on Monday, but I called the electrician they planned to schedule and he kindly came out at the end of that day to connect the heat pump to the furnace. A few days later the heat pump stopped working, and McCarthy came out to check the problem. The brand-new heat pump they had installed had a faulty thermostat, so they had to schedule another date to replace it with another heat pump. They just happened to have the same unit in their end of year overstock (hmmm), so we didn't have to wait long. And they eventually replaced the 4 celing tiles that they broke, after we had a hole in our basement celing for several weeks. They never found a perfect match for the ceiling tiles, so there is still a slight gap in between the tiles. We had OPPD and MUD out to check the heat pump, and the rep from MUD would not pass the unit until McCarthy moved the furnace exhaust pipe - it was exhausting too close to the gas meter. McCarthy moved the pipe, and unit finally passed inspection. Most of our communication with John McCarthy, Jr. and other office staff was through email, because after we caught on that there were several problems brewing we wanted to have everything in writing. They were always quick to respond to our emails. After the several visits to our house to fix things, they ended up refunding us 20% of the purchase price, and they gave us 3 furnace filters. So, we were annoyed with all the hassle, but appeased and relieved to have the ordeal over. We had a service plan with McCarthy for the first year, and now we are using another company. When the serviceman came out recently to check the heat pump and furnace, he told us that a coil inside the heat pump is bent, so the heat pump is not working efficiently. He said there is no way it could have been bent during install, due to the location of the coil - he said it was faulty unit and they should not have installed it in the first place. I have not yet contacted McCarthy.
