Description of Work: 2 service visits. The first one dealt with several non working outlets, and this was corrected-quickly and professionally (2 people came out). The technician suggested there may be a problem with the wiring and advised scheduling someone to examine the entire outlet situation in the house. I scheduled a house call so a Sentry electrician could examine and give an estimate for replacing the outlets in the house. The service guy came out and did not appear to be 100% sure what he was to do, after he made a call-to his "brother" who made the first call, he proceeded to examine the outlets. I know next to nothing about the electrical situation in a home, outside of flipping the switches up or down and plugging in outlets, but I do know that replacing outlets for $56 each, is excessive. Sentry wanted to replace 56 outlets for over $3000. Sorry, I was born, but not yesterday.

Your review was for an estimate, not work actually performed. Since you did not agree to meet and discuss this I will state our position here. You did not get a second price so you are assuming that this price is out of line. We gave you a price before work was started and you had the opportunity not to do the work. You chose for us to not do the work. We did not pressure you and offer discounts if we do the work immediately. We did not charge you for the estimate. You stated that our previous call that you were satisfied with our work and price. In fact you stated that your repair was corrected quickly and professionally. I am confused how you can give us an F for quality. On our first call we showed up within hours of your call and the second call we showed up at the agreed upon time yet you give us a D for responsiveness and a C for punctuality. As you stated, our first call to your house we came out to repair a partial loss of power. Since we consider an unusual power outage an emergency and you also indicated that you considered the need for repair urgent, we sent out the first available crew. This was a 2 man crew and we did not charge you for the second man. Your bill for this emergency call was $74.04. It turned out that a wire in a receptacle had shorted to the box. The tape covering a splice had worn through and shorted to the side of the grounded box. We repaired the splice, replaced the device and restored power to that circuit. A short circuit like you had is a red flag to us and makes us suspicious about the other wiring in the house. We normally see splices with wire nuts, not tape which is another red flag to us. That is why the electrician mentioned that you should have your wiring checked. We do provide a 100 point check of your system which includes an infrared scan to look behind walls for troublesome areas. The reason that our electrician looked confused and called his brother was that the description of previous work completed on our estimate document stated there were western union splices in your wiring and wanted to get an idea where these splices were. Western union splices are normally associated with knob and tube wiring, not circa 1970 wiring. After consulting with both boy’s (they are my son’s) I can tell you that you do not have western union splices. What you have are soldered and taped splices. I only know this because I have been in the industry since 1973. About 25 years ago there was an electrician who only did house wiring. This electrician had at the time also been in the industry for a very long time and did not trust the new-fangled wire nuts that everyone else was using. He had been brought up to solder and tape all splices. To do this he would twist all wires together and hang them out of the box. He would then go around with a cup of molten solder, dip the ends of the wire in this solder and then tape the connections when they had cooled. This electrician was a craftsman. He did not compromise his principles using methods that he considered inferior and I agree with him that this was a much better splice than a wire nut splice but much more labor intensive. It is also subject to the wires rubbing through the tape and touching the grounded box which is what caused your first problem. Even top quality original wiring can fail. To two young men who both have been in the industry for over 10 years, this splice is not standard, rarely seen and because of your previous problem considered a hazard. Thus the assumption was that you had bad splices and would need to be re-done to prevent the problem from happening again. This time, containment of your short performed exactly as designed and was contained in a box. Our goal is to make sure that we can prevent you from this problem happening a second and third time with a possible different outcome. As far as the pricing goes please keep this in mind. Our estimator knew from a previous call that you likely had electrical problems. Their assumption was that the spices were not proper. The price per device was actually $53.57 not $56.00, still a lot of money. A good quality device, not a lumber yard device similar to those we use will cost you about 1.75 and the plate $0.77. I doubt that you will find the black devices that you requested at a lumber yard but my suppliers do not charge a premium for unusual colors. There will be a few wire nuts and a bit of wire to re-do the connections, about $1.00. It will take about 30 to 40 minutes per device to re-do the connection and replace the device. Our standard labor rate is $71.00 per hour. 40 minutes of labor will be $48.00. So if our assumption that the splices were not proper was in fact true, our price would not be that far off. However I do need to apologize for the boys not knowing the peculiarities of our industry. They like you were not aware of your non-standard electrical situation. Since this was an estimate I cannot offer you our 100% money back guarantee because there was no money changing hands. All I can do is to make sure that all of my field staff is aware of these types of splices, and have them explain to our clients completely what is involved to do the repair in order to avoid these types of misunderstandings in the future.

I am sorry that you were not completely satisfied with our installation. We do have a one year warranty that you still are covered by currently if there is anything that we need to fix. We strive to perform only the best work for our customers. We do give our prices out before the job is started to give you the ability to know what it will cost and decide if you are comfortable with it. If not we can then offer alternatives, or we can part ways on the project with no obligation.

Contacted Sentry and they were very easy to set up an appointment with. Technician showed up a few minutes early. He was polite and knowledgable, and gave us options on how we could proceed. Went ahead and had them do some work which was quickly completed that day.
