i found mr vaughn's ad on craigslist. we did everything by email; i never saw him. the price is really $55 but since i live more than 20 miles from his shop there was a $20 pick up and delivery fee. fine by me. he was fast and efficient and the mower is still running great in november.
Description of Work: mr vaughn came and picked up my lawn mower, put in a new air filter, spark plug, clearned the carburator, and sharpened the blade and returned it.

I had a very good lawn mower -- a gas-powered 21-inch push mower -- so good that I used it for five years without any problems. However, in cleaning it in July 2012, I neglected to follow instructions in the manual such that the lawn mower would no longer start. When I took the lawn mower to Precision Outdoor, they not only fixed the problem but also sharpened the blade -- which badly needed sharpening -- as part of their standard tune-up service. I was told that due to backlog it might take as much as a month for them to get to my mower, but this backlog was consistent with what other area repair shops I had checked with had told me, besides which Precision Outdoor had the mower ready in two weeks, which was about half the time I expected. Following its repair by Precision Outdoor, I used the mower without any problem for the rest of the summer. I have waited until the end of the grass-mowing season (the end of October) to write this review in order to be certain of my recommendation. I am very pleased with the repair work done on my mower by Precision Outdoor, and I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Lawn mower would not start. Mower blade badly needed sharpening. Mower was clearly overdue for tune-up after five years of use with no problems. Standard tune-up service was performed on mower, including blade sharpening.

My Poulan 25cc gas blower would not start. I brought it in to be assessed, as I have used Precision before for lawnmower maintenance and had good luck. They checked with Poulan to see if it was under warranty (it was not) and notified me that it just needed periodic maintenance (new spark plug, air filter, etc.) The cost of $50 was less than the cost of a new unit, and it was nice they checked with the manufacturer about the warranty. The blower is working great since the service. I've used it at least 3 times and it seems to be running better with each use, starting within 3 pulls of the cord.

I posted a review on this same company a while back with a very similar experience. I have a Honda push mower and I have had routine trouble removing the blade on the mower. Last time I took it by the shop and Al (repair guy) did a great job and gave me some tips on how to remove the blade myself in the future. That advice worked well until a few weeks ago when I ran into another 'stuck bolt' issue. Since I had such a good experience w/ this shop earlier, I took my mower by again. I helped the guys unload it from my truck, they put it on a lift, and had the blade removed w/ an air wrench in about 15 seconds. They then sharpened the blade, and reinstalled it on the mower. Probably < 10 mins overall time spent. I assumed that I would have a low bill like last time, but when I checked out, they presented me with a $25 charge for sharpening the blade. I questioned this and they said, "$12.50 per blade if we remove them." The Honda mower has two blades attached one atop the other, so I can see charging me to SHARPEN both blades, but to REMOVE both blades? Really? Anyway - this charge is way over the line in my opinion. I questioned the guys in the shop, and told them about my prior experience, but they didn't seem too concerned or interested. Note that this was a different guy than I dealt with on my last visit to this business. So, I paid the $25, and here I am to let other Angie's List customers know about this excessive charge. I could understand if there was something difficult or time consuming, but I actually HELPED them load/unload the mower from my truck and they still charged me this rate! Had I known what the pricing was going to be, I wouldn't have touched it during the loading/unloading process! I doubt that I will use these guys again. I was happy after my first experience here, but this has changed my mind completely about their business practices. I'll be looking elsewhere in the future. I rated the overall experience as FAIR because in the end, I got the service that I needed, but the pricing and attitude of the shop personnel made the experience very unpleasant.

Very professional, honest and yet had a friendly small-town feel to his approach. Told me it would take a week, and they would call when it was ready. Also told me there would be a storage fee per day if left over 10 days beyond the pickup call date. They had a tuneup special of $37. Fantastic deal and when I picked up the lawn mower, it was clean.

Salesman on phone walked me through the process of removing the carburator for this model, cleaning it, then flushing out the engine. Basically cost them a $150 service call by walking me through everything, and spent 20 minutes on the phone with me. This made me REALLY trust them if we ever had to do real work! He made it very clear they'd be happy to do the service, and that it would be a flat $50 for the carb cleaning and other basic tuneup work rather than the $150 to replace the carb, which he said was very unlikely to be needed.

The guys did a great job. Quick, reasonably priced and it purrs like a kitten now. Only downside was FINDING them. They should mention that they're on the back side of a hardware store or see if they can put up some larger signage. I drove up and down the street several times and at one point was actually in the parking lot right outside their door and never saw the very modestly sized signs. They need something out front on the main street that tells people they're around back.

I have a Honda push mower that I sharpen the blades on routinely, but for some reason, when I went to remove them about a week ago, I could not get either bolt to loosen. After risking my knuckles with various wrench extensions and homemade remedies, I decided to let the pros have a go at it. I found Precision Outdoor Equipment on AL, stopped by on the way to work one morning to confirm location, and the guy working there told me if I would bring the mower back by he could do it while I waited. So, I picked it up at lunch, stopped by, and he used an air wrench to loosen the bolts and remove the blade. He indicated that I should use a 14mm wrench in the future (I was using a 9/16 wrench and apparently they are very close in size). He charged me almost nothing to do this work - maybe because I helped him load/unload the mower from my truck. In any event, the work was done promptly, successfully, and with as much professionalism as you would expect to find from any small engine repair shop. In short, problem solved, blade sharpened, ready to mow! I'll definitely be giving these guys a call the next time I have a problem.

Went well. Repaired lawnmower reasonably quickly at a moderate cost. This is the third time I've had to repair this lawnmower in 2 years though, so if these repairs don't hold I'll give up and buy a new one.
Description of Work: My lawnmower would not stay cranked, and the self-propelling belt kept breaking. I took my lawnmower in and left a $25 deposit. A little over a week later it was ready for pick up. He had rebuilt the carburetor and replaced several smaller parts.

While I had to spend a little time, the owner of this company saved me a bunch of money. By doing what he suggested I was able to do the repair myself. I will definitly go to this company for other small engine repair.
Description of Work: The recoil starter on my old rotary lawn mower would not rewind the cord when pulled. I took off the recoil part and it recoiled just fine. The cover of the engine has a pully that holds the cord and a steel spring for the recoil. I carried this part into the shop and when I described that it recoiled in my hand but not on the mower the owner immediately told me that the problem was rust on the recoil clutch, which is on top of the engine just below the part I had in my hand. He described how to get into it, and said that spraying WD-40 into it would loosen it up. I did as he said and sprayed some WD-40 into it every day for a week. It finally started to move with a wrench. I rotated it a few times until it rotated freely, put it all back together and it works! I have used the mower several times in the past two weeks and it is running fine.

When I dropped the mower off, he charged $26 for the diagnostic and promised to call me within 10 days to let me know what he found out and what the cost of repair. I heard nothing from him in three weeks. Finally, I had to call to check on the status. He told me the part just came in the day before and he would get to it "today or tomorrow". I let another three days pass and he did not call back. I call again and he told me the part just came in that day. When I asked when it could be fixed, he told me they were too busy and would try to get to it the following week. Since he never gave me a diagnosis (or an estimate for the repair charge), I asked him what the problem was. In a rude voice, he told me he already put the work order away and was with another customer now. He called me the following day and told me it was ready. The price was reasonable, but they never let me make choice on whether to do the repair. The rude customer service wins Precision no points. NOT RECOMMENDED.

I AGREE IT TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL DUE TO MY SUPPLIERS BEING OUT OF STOCK ON A PART WE NEEDED. AS FAR AS RUDENESS GOES, I APOLOGIZE. MOST OF THE TIME AROUND HERE IN THE SPRING, CUSTOMERS ARE VERY UNRULY BECAUSE THEY FORGOT ABOUT THEIR MOWER WHEN THEY WERE GETTING THEIR YARDS READY AND WE GET OVERLOADED WITH EQUIPMENT TO BE REPAIRED THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. PLEASE, WHEN YOU SEED AND FEED YOUR LAWN, BRING YOUR MOWER IN BEFORE YOU DO IT, AND THIS WOULD ELIMINATE THIS PROBLEM AS IN FEB. AND MARCH WORK LOAD IS A LOT LIGHTER. HE BROUGHT IT IN ON 3-24 AND IT WAS INVOICED ON 4-21, WHICH IS A LITTLE TOO LONG FOR ME, BUT SOME THINGS ARE OUT OF OUR HANDS, AND I WOULD RATHER HAVE IT LEAVE RIGHT THAN HALF DONE.

Precision appears to be the only remaining Homelite repair shop in the Triangle, as many others have since stopped working on Homelite. Being in Chapel Hill, it was a hassle, but no one would consider doing the maintenance I needed. They were friendly, and service was quick. They said it would be 2 weeks but I got a call in just 4 days that the maintenance was complete. The shop is tiny and is at the back of the Burke Bros. Hardware store. You can't see it from Hillsborough St. It is a funny little place crammed w/power tools and the two guys running the place sitting behind the counter, smoking, tinkering and waiting for the next customer to break the monotony. It is a classic repair shop. Service was quick & reasonably priced. If needed, I'll use them again for Homelite authorized repairs, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get over there.
