We started this project as a renovation of the living/recreation room. Once we decided to install wood floors throughout, our general contractor suggested updating the kitchen as well. One thing lead to another and we redid the entire first floor of our house.
Description of Work: We remodeled our kitchen with new cabinets, countertops, sinks, fixtures and flooring. Todd Carlton was invaluable in helping us through this process. We went into the Cabinet section knowing very little about remodeling. He designed the entire kitchen while sitting down with us accommodating our particular needs. We felt very lucky to have found someone with his background and depth of knowledge in designing kitchens. The cabinet installers, Woodchuck's Contracting, demonstrated the same type of experience and knowledge. We have enjoyed our "new kitchen" tremendously and would recommend and do recommend Home Depot to anyone embarking on this type of renovation project.

I pay about 70 dollars for each rental which is for one day usually. I haven't done a lot of comparison shopping so I would give them a B on price. Their punctuality is an A; usually when I walk in there it gets an attention. I would continue to go there if needed. It is a first come first serve and they don't take reservation. You can call ahead and find out if they've got the equipment that you need and rush up there.
Description of Work: They are about a mile away from here and I rent rototillers from them a lot and the last time was in November.

It is often frustrating to deal with them because the store is so large and there are never enough people around to help you. I was looking for new faucets, mirrors, vanities, bathroom hardware, and flooring options. I found that their vanities felt cheap, for what they were charging (these were for the in stock items). It was much more cost effective to order them. It was hard to find a nice shower door, they were hard to get a good feel and the metals seemed really cheap. There were a lot of options in regards to the faucets and since there were a lot on sale, I found the prices good. I like their selection of tile. A tile store, naturally, has more, but Home Depot has a good selection in stock and the price is better. For things like hardware (knobs, hinges, etc) they seemed to be out of stock on a lot of things and didn't really have the best selection of lighting. It was good to get a feel so that I was sure that I checked all my options, but I don't think I would buy everything from them.
Description of Work: I went to check out what options they had to a quick updating of my bathroom.

They did a great job. Then I hired them to install the windows upstairs and they did a terrible job. The first time they came out and measured. Then they sent the manager to check them. They ordered the windows and it was great. This time they had five separate trips to measure the windows. They had a project manager that quit and people had to come from Charlotte. They got the windows ordered. They tore up molding on the inside for taking a window out. I had to get them to do it right. One window was off by over two inches. They had to reorder the windows for those. Then they finished the job. The job lasted three and a half months.
Description of Work: Three years ago the installed new high quality window downstairs.

countertops, cabinet refacing

For my small kitchen, the estimate was over $13,000 to reface with laminate cabinets and counter tops (and the counter tops would have those unsightly seams along the 45 degree angles)--and over $21,000 to reface with wood and Silastone. Wow. And that's just REFACING, not including any changes to sink or fixtures. Just a small back splash, no extras. Of course, they push you to "sign tonight" with an $800 discount. I did not. I know all about commission structures, and it's not a good deal for the consumer. Of course these guys are just salesmen, not craftsmen, and their job is to close a deal--and they get paid well if they do. It's a pyramid thing, with the in-store kids getting a cut, they get a cut, Home Depot gets a cut, and the order is sent off to some faraway place to be cut up and sent in, then they subcontract from a collection of workers to put the puzzle together. Looked fraught with hazard to me, and way overpriced. I found a local, skilled cabinetmaker who gave me an estimate for completely new solid wood cabinets and tile counter tops, full back splash, for less than what these Home Depot sub-subcontractors wanted just to resurface in plastic. He tore out all my cabinets and completely rebuilt them, adding on extra cabinets, more counter space, a snack bar, and many other extras, with (subcontracted) tiled counter tops and a beautiful full tiled back splash from counters to cabinets, plus other cabinets above the fridge and in the laundry room, PLUS all three bathrooms with new cabinets--all solid wood, and with tile choices and trim to my specs. I bought a new enameled steel sink and paid for the plumber to install it--and the total still came out less than what these Home Depot guys wanted for simply refacing with the cheapie laminate veneer, laminate counter tops, and small back splash, kitchen only, existing sink. Easy choice! And I am very happy with the results--so happy that I've gone from updating my kitchen for sale, to deciding to stay here. The cabinets were all assembled and lacquered (with Sherwin-Williams lacquer to perfectly match my appliances) in their cabinet shop within a few days, installed in 2 days, tiled shortly thereafter, and all the little extra glitches and trim included! I recommend you get estimates, support local craftsmen, and deal direct.
Description of Work: Here's the deal: A young person approaches you in the Home Depot store when they see you browsing in the kitchen or tile section, and offer you a free measurement and estimate for cabinet refacing in your home. Free is good, so you say OK if you are thinking about kitchen renovations. They set it up. Two guys show up with samples and briefcases and give you a lengthy pitch about quality blah blah, have you pick out samples (from the offerings at Home Depot), measure a bit, and give you an estimate. Of course, there is a big difference in price between choosing laminate refacing vs. solid wood doors and drawers, and laminate counter tops vs. Silastone or some other composite. I didn't even look at granite; I'm not sure they offered it. But remember: this is refacing, not building cabinets or changing any footprints.

Very well. Originally it was supposed to take 4 days for the cabinets, but we had a rainy day or two and the humidity added an extra day to the curing of the refacing material. I was very happy with the work and am thrilled with the results.
Description of Work: We had our cabinets refaced and a Silestone countertop put in. Jerry, the man who did the cabinet reface, was not a worker - he was a craftsman. His work was impeccable. He took 5 days to reface all our cabinets and left each evening with everything cleaned up and ready for the next day. He had a wonderful attitude and took care of every detail perfectly. As far as the countertops, the man who measured did not clearly point out that our existing counters were not level, so when the new countertop arrived, it couldn't be installed until they put shims in. The installers were not proactive to finding a solution, but were willing to make the fix when my husband came up with the solution. When I called the office, they said my husband had signed off on the paperwork - which he did - but the estimator didn't communicate clearly that a slanted countertop was a problem that needed to be fixed prior to installation.

flooring contractor, hardwood floor

Home Depot had a good salesperson- very helpful, explained the process to me. After that, it went downhill. They lost my floors, causing delays. They delivered 1/4 inch quarter round instead of 3/4 inch. They gave me transitions which were laminate instead of hardwood. I had to go to the store and special order the transitions that were supposed to match, and then when they arrived they were mahogany. I believe this was an issue with the manufacturer rather than Home Depot, but it could have been avoided if Home Depot had just carried the transitions that went with the flooring they sold. In the end, I had to get my own transitions from another home improvement store. The contractor they used was mixed- the first two who worked on my floors came out at 10 and left at 4, and did a *expletive* job. Everyone else who came out did great work. In the end, my floors look great, but due to all the delays and mistakes, it took six months between the order and the final product.

I will never use Home Depot for siding again. First, it took over two months after the sub-contractor came out to estimate the job and for the materials to arrive. They left them on our yard and killed our grass. They removed our old siding and left a hole in the side of our house. I had to call the store to demand they send him out to take care of it. He finally did and finally completed the job, but ended up damaging a bush, more grass and cut the line to our cable. We ended up getting some money back for the things they damaged, but they also hit us with an unexpected interest charge. The original price was good, and so was the quality of the work once it was done, but they clearly lacked professionalism.
Description of Work: Home Depot sold me the siding for my house and arranged for one of their sub-contractors to install it. This was around the first floor of our 30' x 30' house. They installed hardy plank siding.
