+ 0 moreAfter I called, Paul came out and measured and asked exactly what I had in mind. He drew sketches and then went back to his office and made detailed drawings of what I needed and sent them to me for approval. He built the furniture in his workshop and, then, assembled and built in the units in the living room. I couldn't be more pleased. He does really beautiful work. The media center and bookcase are solid with lovely detailing and are topped with crown molding that matches my living room walls. Paul is meticulous with his work and I love the new built-ins. He's also prompt, careful with walls and floors, etc., and makes sure that everything is tidy when he's done. I was so pleased with his work that I've already asked him to build a bookcase for my bedroom and to work on units for another room. His work is just that good. No negatives. No surprises. Paul is exactly the kind of person for whom it is a pleasure to write a review.

+ 1 moreMr. McDonald came to my house and we talked about what I wanted to do. He showed me his web page which was very impressive! He gave me many choices and told me of the options and approximately the expense of each. I called him several days later and we decided that he would pick up the doors and drawers in the next ten days or so. He called a week later and told me he would pick them up at the end of the week, which he did. From the beginning to the end of the job, he was courteous, on time,did much more than promised, and had wonderful craftsmanship. His work is beautiful!!
Description of Work: Mr. McDonald refinished the bottom cabinets and drawers in my kitchen. He also made end panels for the bottom, and top cabinets. After finishing those, he made space for an over the range microwave by modifying the top cabinet. He finished by putting molding on the bottom of the top cabinets to mirror,in miniature, the crown molding on the top of the cabinets. This also made space for under the cabinet lights

+ -1 morePaul sat down with us and we discussed what we wanted. He listened very closely and then made a proposal to our liking. We added some lighting to what was proposed and after a concept drawing was submitted we gave him the GO AHEAD. Paul explained the there two jobs in the works and that he would have ours ready to install in 7 weeks. On the day of installation he arrived early and was finished that afternoon. The color matches perfectly and it looks like the unit came with the house. Needless to say we are very pleased and would HIGHLY recommend Carpathian Woodworks.

+ 1 moreThe provider was very helpful in making suggestions as to how to best use space in a third floor finished bedroom. We were not able to put a separate bath on this level and we wanted to make the best use of the space. We wanted it to be functional, practical and most of all usable by future buyers. From the start, Paul came to our house, listened to our needs, took our suggestions and presented practical solutions that fit our taste, time and budget. Professional from start to finish, Paul kept us up to date on the project and even finished the install ahead of schedule. The entire family could not be happier with the finished result. I look forward to working with Paul again when we have a project the requires the skills of a master craftsman.

+ -1 moreMr MacDonald held our hand through the whole process, from conception to installation. He was incredibly patient with changes, offered good advice, was always punctual, and after the installation, tidied-up before he left. I'd use him again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: Built a custom 7' x 6' bookcase which is anchored to the wall, stained to match an existing breakfront. In addition, Mr MacDonald built three deep shadow boxes for display purposes, stained to match the bookcase; the boxes will be housed on shelves in the bookcase.

+ 0 morePaul developed a 'to scale' drawing of the cabinets, came up with a great idea for the cabinet 'footing' and went over all of the final details with us to get sign-off before he built the cabinets. He also showed us exact sizes of the beams for the coffered ceiling before we agreed which size was right for the room. He built everything and installed it all much more quickly than we had anticipated - the entire project only took about two weeks and everything looks fabulous. We have gotten so many compliments on the great woodwork. The family room with the new cabinets and coffered ceiling is the best room in the house. We had also received design suggestions and cost quotes from a couple of other A-rated Angie's list woodwork experts. Paul's was the most closely aligned to what we wanted and came in at a much more reasonable cost. And, he was able to install weeks faster than the others who are clearly back-logged and taking on too much business that they can't handle. I would highly recommend Paul to anyone looking for superior results!
Description of Work: Paul discussed our ideas for making two unique cabinets on either side of our fireplace, as well as building a coffered ceiling in the same room (the family room). He came up with exactly the plan we wanted and was able to ensure we didn't compromise the current room layout, fireplace mantle, etc. - and that the new woodwork looks like it was always here.

+ -1 morePaul was the perfect person for our project. We were building a small Bungalow on the river and needed a Murphy bed that didn't look like a Murphy bed when folded up. We designed a cabinet unit that fits the entire end of the living room the features the Murphy bed, a tall cabinet and under window cabinet. Paul met with us several times to help us modify the design slightly based on his broad cabinet making experience. Since the living room is also the bedroom and dining room we wanted to incorporate a decent sized table in the design. Paul made it happen and we believe this is the first time a 5' dining table is been added to the Murphy bed design in a way that it is hidden in the fake panels and drawers when it is folded up. Then he took our room trim color and matched the lacquer finish, and added some rub-off details that looked great! The end result far exceeded our expectations and is truely a focal point in our new little house. It really felt like a team effort to create a wall unit that is unique, beautiful and very functional! Paul is a great craftsman to work with, and we plan to use him again in the near future.

Description of Work: Custom built cabinets/shelves installed in the living room. Two units, each is 108" high by approx. 60" wide. Installed on both sides of a fireplace. Lower units have doors, upper cabinets have open shelves. One unit functions as an entertainment center providing space for the television and cable equipment.

He made sure he knew exactly what we wanted before he got started. Midway through, he even asked us to come out to his shop and see what everything looked like in case we wanted any last-minute adjustments. Installation was done on time, as promised. Top-notch workmanship all around. It's the centerpiece of the room, and it couldn't look better! Great customer service, and great craftsmanship. Worth every penny.

Paul established a timeline and adhered to it. He invited us to his shop on multiple occasions to view the ongoing work and discuss details for which he needed our input. The finished products were beautiful. I would not hesitate to use him again for future projects.

+ 0 moreHe did a beautiful job. He was excellent. He was very affordable. I was amazed with how nicely the work came out. The shelves look beautiful. He arched them and matched the molding and made beautiful round arches. He did a very beautiful job. He also put lighting for the price I got which was really nice. I was very pleased with him. It looks really high end and everybody appreciated it. He is very honest and worked quickly. He does most of the work outside in his workshop and then brings it here. He has another gentleman who comes with him and they both were extremely nice men. They were very considerate about my family here. They worked quickly and did beautiful work. The work was very nicely done. They looked like they were meant to do this work. He was very detail oriented. The book shelf looks very pretty. He also made a pocket for a removable shelf which you would never know. I had all the elements I asked for. He was very responsive. He finished the work fast. The clean up was immaculate. I had new wooden flooring done. He put a lot of things on the floor to cover it and did the work. The only thing I am not sure about is the price. I think it was a good price. I can’t think of anything being cheaper than this.

+ 1 moreI made one phone call to set up an appointment for a consult/estimate. He came over less than 1 hour later. He designed the bench and gave me a couple of options w/estimates. Told me to think about it. I called him back the next day and we made an appointment for the very next week. He showed up 15 minutes early (good thing) and was done in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The bench is perfect, just what we wanted. I had never worked w/a carpenter before but now I will rather than go buy furniture at a store. Better to get exactly what you want at really no more cost. So happy.

Description of Work: I needed my entire staircase completely redone! I had tried calling several other people throughout the Triangle area and had no luck. They would promise to come and then they would not show up, call, e-mail, or anything. I become extremely annoyed and decided to just "give up" on the idea of having my staircase redone. Finally a friend of mine recommended "Carpathian Wood Works" to me. I gave Mr. McDonald a call & we set up an appointment for Saturday, May 23, 2009 in the a.m. He showed up 5 - 10 minutes "EARLY!," quoted me a price and asked when I was looking to have it done. I told him asap and he said what about today, and that is when the job took place and was FINISHED before 6:00 p.m. The quality of HIS craftsmanship is unbelieveable. His professionalism as well as his mannerisms were impecable. His promptness was a real blessing and the staircase looks fantastic! Carpathian Wood Works is insured and has been in business for 28 years. They work 7:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday thru Sunday. My husband and I asked him if he "created" or "made" furniture and to our luck he does. He even showed us his portfolio and other pieces of work he had done throughout the years of being in business. I definately would give this company a try! You will not be disappointed.
