Masterbuilder Fellowship ("MBF") did not meet expectations. MBF did not accurately estimate costs or time to complete. The final cost was approx 30% higher than the estimate. The construction was estimated to take 2 months while it actually took over 4 months to reach substantial completion. MBF provided an est cost of $2,000 to assist with placing overhead electrical lines underground. After performing the work with no discussion of cost overruns, MBF left a bill on my doorstep on a Saturday for $4,848. I contacted them on Monday morning to discuss, and we settled the bill for $3,300. Management of the project was not cohesive. The project was assigned to a partner other than the one involved in the proposal. Details discussed during the proposal were not communicated to the new project manager by MBF. The project manager took vacation during weeks 9 to 12 of the construction, so the project was interrupted for a second time as responsibility was shifted.
Description of Work: Design & build addition of approximately 250 square feet. Converted existing bedroom into bathroom, closet and laundry area and added larger bedroom. Re-roofed entire house. Placed overhead electrical lines underground.

Response from New Hope Design - Build Inc.
ALTHOUGH THE MEMBER'S REVIEW OF THE OVERALL QUALITY OF OUR WORK WAS RATED A "B", NEVERTHELESS, CERTAIN ISSUES WERE RAISED REGARDING COSTS, CONSTRUCTION DELAYS, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES. WE ARE VERY SORRY THAT THE MEMBER WAS NOT COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH HER EXPERIENCE AND WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS. FIRST, THE MEMBER WAS UPDATED ON THE REASONS FOR THE BUDGET CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROCESS, AND SHE DID AGREE TO THE FINAL COST. SECOND, PROJECT COMPLETION WAS DELAYED SUBSTANTIALLY DUE TO UNREASONABLE SITE CONDITIONS SET BY THE MEMBER AFTER THE PROJECT BEGAN: FOR EXAMPLE, NO DUMPSTER WAS ALLOWED ON A TIGHT REAR SITE SO ALL DEBRIS HAD TO BE MANAGED BY COSTLY TIME-CONSUMING METHODS; SEVERE DRIVEWAY-ACCESS RESTRICTIONS WERE IMPOSED ON ALL WORKERS AND SUBCONTRACTORS WHICH IMPEDED NORMAL OPERATIONS; ETC., ETC. THE WORK OF BURYING THE ELECTRICAL LINES WAS FOUND TO BE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN ANTICIPATED DUE TO EXISTING CONDITIONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL. IT WAS MADE CLEAR AND AGREED TO WITH THE CLIENT BEFORE THE WORK BEGAN THAT THE BUDGET FOR THIS CHANGE ORDER WAS ONLY AN APPROXIMATION DUE TO THE UNPREDICTABILITY AND DIFFICULTY OF THE PARTICULAR WORK. SEEKING PEACE AND GOOD WILL, WE NEGOTIATED A COST REDUCTION ON THE CHANGE ORDER, AT OUR EXPENSE. FINALLY, OUT OF A DESIRE TO SATISFY THE MEMBER'S WISHES, PROJECT MANAGEMENT WAS CHANGED AROUND WEEK 9 OR 10. WE WERE INITIALLY HESITANT, BUT ENACTED THE CHANGE OUT OF THE HOPE THAT IT WOULD IMPROVE RELATIONS-LAMENTABLY, IT DID NOT. HOWEVER, AT THE END, THE PROJECT WAS IMMACULATELY AND LOVINGLY COMPLETED TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS, WITH THE FULL APPROVAL OF THE CLIENT-FOR WHOM WE HAVE ONLY COMPASSION. AFTERWORDS, WE BID HER FAREWELL AND GOOD WISHES, WITH A GIFT OF FLOWERS AND AN EVENING AT THE FINEST RESTAURANT IN CHARLOTTE. THE PROJECT STANDS BEAUTIFULLY TODAY FOR ALL TO SEE. WE HUMBLY, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT AND MALICE TOWARD NONE, OFFER THIS TESTIMONY AS A TRUE RECORD.

The den looks great. They did a really good job. They were a little slower than I expected. I was happy with the work overall. The workers were nice to deal with. I do not want to share the price.
Description of Work: They renovated our den. They put in new carpet flooring and painted. They also built and installed new cabinets and bookcases.

This company is a Christian faith based company. They are composed of very highly skilled craftsman and builders. They do excellent work. We have seen some of their previous projects and they are just beautiful. I can say that their prices are kind of toward the high side compared to other quotes we had received, but their work can not be matched by really anyone around.
Description of Work: Masterbuilder Fellowship For The Built Environment built us a new rear covered screened in porch totaling approximately 600 square foot of space. They added a shingled roof on the porch as well.

I have used these guys in the past and believe me I could talk about their professionalism and amazing craftsmanship all day long. For starters, these guys are a fairly younger group of men. They pulled the talents together and made this business. I have used them in the past and will continue to use them for all of my building or wood working needs. I really do want people to know that their collective talents are truly amazing. Their work is practically flawless. I really like that they showed up right on time and the project was done exactly by the scheduled date of completion.

Masterbuilder Richard Ellison went beyond our expectations in restoring and rebuilding a huge window. It was a difficult and tedious job that required expert craftmanship. Richard is very courteous and professional and an easy person to work with. He is just a very nice person. I hope to be able to hire him again soon. The Masterbuilders are a cut above all the contractors I've ever worked with. They really care about their clients and they are perfectionists about their work. Another plus is that they have the skills to restore old and historic buildings.
Description of Work: Replaced 7'x 5' double hung wood window for historic Victorian house. The job included custom milling and expert carpentry.

Sean is such a gentleman and did exactly what he said he would do. With our high expectations we can be overly demanding and at times, were. Sean would gently explain that this type of construction could not be hurried due to the craftsmanship and contractors involved i.e. a stone wall and supporting columns were built by stonemasons; a specialty roofer installed the standing seam metal roof; an electrician ran the concealed wiring for our porch lighting, fans and outlets; special order out-swing double French doors by Marvin were installed on both sides of our fireplace and open onto the new covered porch. The end result is a fabulous enhancement to our home s value and functionality. I unconditionally recommend Masterbuilder Fellowship for the Built Environment and can't wait until they begin work on the new front entrance of our home.
Description of Work: Teardown a 15-year-old 2-story-high builder grade deck on spindly legs and replace with an elevated post and beam, covered porch on stone columns. We selected and called three porch builders for quotes. Masterbuilder and one other was found via Angie's List. Masterbuilder listened to us and then designed and built our porch as we requested. Another builder kept calling it a screened porch every time we contacted him or he contacted us he was not listening. Still another builder kept talking about having to teardown and rebuild new custom construction due to city inspectors - not the experience we wanted. Sean Murray of Masterbuilder listened carefully to everything we said. He then designed and handcrafted a wonderful environment for our leisure and pleasure. Everyone who sees our porch is impressed by its quality, craftsmanship and beauty.

Quite dissatisfied with the timing and overall experience working with this company. Designs were nice but always beyond reasonable cost for our situation. It did not make sense for us to have custom cabinetry built for $12,000.00 to $18,000.00 while the rest of the kitchen cabinets and appliances were late 70's and in real need of upgrade. Thus we chose not to continue with this company. Most of the work completed cost probably a third more and the quality was not commensurate with the higher cost. We had to have another co. install a drip edge for an additional cost of $500.00 due to the large gaps remaining after Masterbuilder supposedly had completed repairs.
Description of Work: Removed gutters and replaced rotting fascia boards for $1200.00 for a single story ranch house. New gutters for back section of house only was an additional $525.00. Subcontracted exterior painting for $3553.00. Replaced a few storm windows for $170.00. Remaining $2809.00 charge was for design work to improve kitchen/laundry areas.

MasterBuilder did a thoughtful, thorough, and timely job in completing the feasibility study. There were some somewhat challenging circumstances given that the house was occupied by renters at the time of the study, but Chris Rowe worked to minimized the renters' hassle to the degree possible. The response was as thorough as desired, in writing (as desired), with financial and operational analysis (such as contingencies and structural limitations). I discussed the feasibility study twice with Chris Rowe and John Franco and had options for further discussion. They identified, scheduled, got feedback from, and synthesized the information from seven would-be subcontractors. Having met one of the subcontractors, I was very impressed with his and his firms competence, communication skill, contingency planning, and punctuality. It also reflected well on MasterBuilder. I cannot comment on the fee as I did not "bid out" the service.
Description of Work: I engaged MasterBuilder to do a detailed feasibility study of the potential for expanding my 80+ year-old house. I wanted a feasibility study separate from a proposal to do the work so that I could make an informed decision of the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of moving forward. I also wanted relatively detailed financial assumptions on which to make decisions.

We contacted Masterbuilder for an estimate and were really pleased. We've decided to put off the job for a few months for reasons not related to them, but will definitely call them back when we are ready. They are the most professional company we've come across in years. We did recommend them to a neighbor. They have moved begun a project (building a structure to house a camper) with them and are very pleased.

We had watched in horror as the wrap-around porch of our historic Queen Anne Victorian house crumbled, as we interviewed one contractor after another, only to have them never show up to do the work. Fortunately, we discovered Angie's List and the Masterbuilders, a literal answer to our prayers. Highly professional, intelligent, committed to excellence, enthusiastic, this design-build group is outstanding not only in the quality and perfection of their work, but also in the concern and compassion they practice in their life's work. They are on a mission to create beauty and order in the environment of the clients they serve. The difficult job of restoring our porch that had caused others to run was dispatched by these men with so much competence and grace; they seemed to take real joy in the restoration. They even found a state tax credit that would apply! Overall-an extraordinary experience- beautiful work by compassionate and committed artisans.
Description of Work: Restored wrap-around porch and porch foundation on 1896 house. Re-engineered structural problems. Repaired perimeter support beam, ceiling joists, rafters and sheathing, soffits, fascia, roof, eaves, decking. Redesigned old hidden gutter system. Restored turret roof and eaves. Pointed chimneys, restored several very large double hung windows.

IT WAS A PLEASURE WORKING WITH CHRIS AND RICHARD. THEY TAKE THE TIME TO MEET WITH THE HOMEOWNER AND FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS/NEEDS, AND THEIR DESIGNS AND QUALITY OF WORK SHOW THEY ARE COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE (AND QUALITY IN LIFE) FOR ALL THOSE WHO ARE IMPACTED BY THEIR WORK.
Description of Work: DESIGNED MAJOR ALTERATIONS FOR A TIRED 70'S RANCH HOUSE WHICH PERFECTLY SUITED OUR NEW (EMPTY NESTER) LIFESTYLE, CONSOLIDATING 3 RABBIT-WARREN ROOMS INTO A LARGE KITCHEN. REMOVED BRICK WALL, OPENED OLD CRAMPED KITCHEN, AND CREATED FREE-FLOW DESIGN TO THE OTHER ROOMS. ADDED A LARGE WINDOW TO THE NORTH WALL, AND INCORPORATED A STOOP ENTRANCE WHERE WE HAD NONE. INSTALLED AN ON-DEMAND TANKLESS HOT WATER SYSTEM. INSTALLED NEW HALF BATH WITHOUT SACRIFICING FLOOR SPACE. DIVIDED A LONG, DARK DEN INTO 2 AREAS BY VISUALLY SEPARATING THEM WITH COLUMNS AND BUILT-IN KNEEWALL BOOKSHELVES, INSTALLED FLOOR-TO-CEILING IN SUNROOM AREA. THE END RESULT WAS LIKE SITTING IN A TREEHOUSE. IT'S MY FAVORITE ROOM IN THE HOUSE.

THEY SEEMED TO BE MUCH MORE SUITED TO LARGER JOBS, AS THEY ARE MUCH MORE INTO THE DESIGN ASPECT THAN WE PERSONALLY NEEDED. THEY WENT AWAY WITH SOME MEASUREMENTS AND CALLED US BACK WITH A DESIGN AND ESTIMATE. THE DESIGN WAS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS WE HAD GOTTEN FROM OTHER PEOPLE AND THE PRICE WAS ALMOST DOUBLE. WE DECIDED NOT TO GO WITH THEM ONLY BECAUSE OF THE PRICE. THEY WERE PROFESSIONAL, PROMPT AND THEY SEEMED LIKE THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN REALLY NICE TO WORK WITH. IF I EVER HAVE SOME EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS I WOULD LIKE DONE TO MY HOUSE, I WOULD DEFINITELY CALL THEM.

We were particularly impressed with the attitude and professionalism they exhibited throughout the entire construction project. Masterbuilders is a design/build firm. They were especially sensitive to the immediate surrounding environment and took special precautions to ensure that the project was designed and built to preserve our mature trees and meet our need for observing the natural beauty of the surrounding woods and wildlife. The company is composed of men of high ethical and moral standards. Never hesitated to leave them unattended. They used only reputable and high quality subs. Their workmanship is some of the finest construction I have ever experienced. Exceptional quality! Meticulous craftsmen. Always looked to do it right the first time. I would unhesitatingly ask them to build a house for me in the future.
Description of Work: Demolished existing deck. Designed and built a 16 x 19 sun room addition to the house. Built an adjoining 16 x 14 deck (approx). Built a columned portico over the front stoop.
