Nathan Rider and the two men working with him impressed us from the very beginning--they were punctual, considerate (removed shoes upon entering the house), hard working, responsive (thoroughly answered all our questions), and cleaned up all debris! They pulled back insulation in our large attic which was blocking our soffits and installed baffles to allow proper ventilation. They also leveled the blown insulation throughout the large attic and installed insulation in several placed where it had fallen. They installed an air-tight reflective cover with zipper closure over our pull-down access stairs. They also cleaned our small attic where insulation and other debris had accumulated after a new roof was installed, and they insulated the door to the small attic with 1/1/2" foil faced foam board. Their work far exceeded our expectations! We will certainly use them again in the future and will recommend them to our friends and family.
Description of Work: Repaired and installed new baffles to help with ventilation in large attic. Replaced missing insulation in areas of attic, installed air tight reflective zippered cover closure over pull-down access stairs.

Nathan was very knowledgable and performed an overall energy inspection of our home. The company did a great job communicating, scheduling and performing the work. They showed up on time and took a full day to complete a thorough job. They cleaned out the crawl space and removed debris and the old vapor liner. Once the insulation was installed, I could feel a difference that night.

The job went very well in 1 day with appropriate manpower and supervision. Good carpet protection to begin and clean-up at completion. Nathan is very nice, and he is easy to work with. I definitely recommend.
Description of Work: Provided home energy evaluation including blower door air infiltration diagnostics, infrared camera scan thermal analysis, and attic and crawlspace inspections. As a result Nathan then sealed penetrations and top plates in ceiling beneath attic, sealed leaks around HVAC supply registers, and exhaust fans, installed air-tight zipper opening cover over pulldown attic stairs, insulated several doors, installed reflective bubble insulation and/or R-30 batts in walk-in attic.

We have done work with Nathan Rider of Peak Energy before on our crawl space. That work made a significant difference in the energy efficiency and air quality of our home. So when we had some issues with leaks in our attic affecting the 30+ year old insulation up there, we called them back. The work they did on the attic was just as good, and I trust the consistency of their jobs. HIs estimates are acurate and he and his crew arrive at the planned time. Removing old insulation is not a fun task. They have good equipment for vacumming out the old materials and disposing of it properly. The dust from the work was well contained. I would happily hire them again for any further jobs or recommend their work to family and friends.
Description of Work: Remove old attic insulation, seal attic/ceiling spaces (i.e. around light fixtures) and installed new insulation.

Nathan is a joy to work with. He is professional and punctual. We asked him for a quote for both attic insulation and crawlspace encapsulation shortly after we moved into our 38 year old house. He gave us a very detailed estimate, with line item options. It was actually very educational to read his estimate. His crew worked diligently to prep the house to suction the old attic insulation out and blow in the new insulation. Nathan actually came back at the end to clean up the area himself. He was also there to install the insulated box for the walk up attic stairs. As for the crawlspace, his crew worked hard to clear all the junk from the crawlspace, and despite having an unseasonably wet fall, the whole crawlspace was very clean when they were done. Again, Nathan went to work himself and actually helped us troubleshoot some plumbing and HVAC leak problems that we encountered. The HVAC ducts were way too low to begin with, and he was able to find a subcontractor at the last minute to help with getting the HVAC ducts suspended away from the ground. Finally, Nathan went above and beyond, when he came inside the house and noticed a strong soot smell from the chimney, he closed the flue for us. He was just a pleasure to work with because he educated us so much on how our new "old" house works.

The first person arrived around 8:30am and they were done around 12:00 noon. The job went faster than I expected and the crew was very friendly and courteous. They did an outstanding job of putting plastic up to keep the insulation in the attic instead of on our floors. And every scrap that happened to escape was cleaned up before they left. Overall, I was extremely pleased with the service. The company does charge $75 for quotes (the fee is waived if you follow through with the installation). I don't like this, but it seems to be an industry norm. Nathan did give me some general idea of how to calculate an estimate before he came, so I had a good idea of what to expect. This was the 3rd quote I had asked for from a company. The first company, the owner popped his head in the attic for just a minute (but then never sent me a quote). The second company was Lowe's, and their estimator refused to even look in the attic. When Nathan arrived, he went straight to the attic and crawled from one end to the other before giving me his quote. I really liked that he gives a turn-key proposal and there is zero concern about having "surprises" being added to the bill after the job is in progress. He also suggested other improvements that would allow the project to meet Duke Progress's rebate program. (Note: Duke is not the same as Duke Progress and this often causes confusion. Nathan is pre-approved with both utilities.) Nathan is the quintessential small business owner. He is friendly, hands-on, and easy to deal with. One of the drawbacks of a small business is that when you call the main number you will have to sometimes leave a message and you have to work around their availability. However, their great customer service, good pricing, and outstanding work make dealing with this company a pleasure. They'll be my first call when we're ready for the next phase of insulating this old house. **Update 03/24/2016: 8 months later and we're really enjoying the additional comfort the insulation gives to the feel of our home! Nathan helped us file for the Duke Energy Progress rebate and we got every penny back from DEP that he said we would. I later realized this job qualifies for a small tax credit, so I called their office to see if I could get additional information that would help me claim the additional credit. Even though it was 8 months later, Kathie did not hesitate to help me. It's nice to know that this is a company that won't just forget about you the moment they get your money. A big thanks!
Description of Work: Air-sealed attic, Installed baffles for soffit vents, Installed additional R-38 blown fiberglass insulation in attic, Installed R-38 batts on top of attic platform, built R-30 insulated cover for attic access. (Project met guidelines for Duke Energy Progress rebate program.)

Working with Nathan to complete the enclosure and conditioning of the crawlspace went extremely well, and I highly recommend Peak Energy to anyone who is planning to have upgrades done to their crawlspace. There is nothing about the project I would have changed. For example, at the same time that Nathan and I were discussing the upgrades to the crawlspace, I was talking with an HVAC contractor to replace our upstairs and downstairs heat pumps. As a part of completing the project, Nathan to the lead to work closely with the HVAC contractor to align the two project schedules. That was important because--ideally--the work Peak Energy was doing needed to be coordinated with the addition of the new duct work in the crawlspace by the HVAC contractor. Everything went very smoothly. Now, the crawlspace not only looks great, but it also has noticeably added to the efficiency of the HVAC systems and to the comfort level in the house. One ongoing and more objective indication of how well the enclosed, conditioned crawlspace is working comes from a wireless device Nathan installed at the end of the project. The device is basically an indoor / outdoor digital thermometer and hygrometer, which uses sensors in the crawlspace to read the temperature and humidity there and to display the numbers on a monitor we have placed on the kitchen counter inside the house. At a glance we can see that the temperature and humidity in the crawlspace tracks along with the settings inside the conditioned space of the house. The outside temperature this summer has been running in the mid to upper 90?s with at times very high, uncomfortable humidity levels. In the past, those outside temperature and humidity levels have created condensation on the duct work underneath the house and dampness in the crawlspace. But now with the enclosed and conditioned area there, the temperature in the crawlspace and inside the house remain comfortable and stable at about 76 degrees, and the humidity stays at a dry and comfortable level of around 50 percent. That is perfect.
Description of Work: Peak Energy completely encapsulated and conditioned the crawlspace at my residence including insulation, vapor barrier and a dehumidifier. All of the work was done on time, in a very professional manner, and passed all of the applicable county inspections.

Peak Energy continues to strive hard to provide excellent service and completely satisfy all of our customers. Unfortunately, we did not receive the best review possible for this service and we will contact the customer to see if there is anything we can do to better serve our customers in the future. Peak Energy is in fact an approved contractor for Duke Energy Progress Carolinas and the person from our company who performed this audit attended the Duke Energy Progress training. Customers in Wake County are not serviced by Duke Energy and therefore do not qualify for their rebates. Customers in Wake County who are serviced by Duke Energy Progress may qualify for energy efficiency rebates, however they currently do not offer a rebate for a home energy audit.

Nathan and team are very professional and Nathan explains things in lay terms so it was easy for me to understand. The cleanup after the job was great, it didn't look they were ever here. I would and have recommended them and will use them again in the future should I need the services that Peak Energy provides.

Peak Energy was one of several contractors I spoke with to inspect the crawlspace and propose a solution. Nathan had the most competitive price, was very easy to work with and could easily answer all questions that I had about the work to be performed. They came out to my house on the day and time promised and accommodated my schedule for when the electrician arrived to install the new GFCI outlet. They replaced the moisture barrier in the crawlspace with 10 mil black plastic and overlapped all seams for 100% coverage, added hangers to address sagging/stranding insulation, closed and blocked all crawlspace vents, installed the dehumidifier with a new gravity PVC drain through the foundation for easy visibility for water being drained and made sure the work site was clean afterwards. The electrician that Nathan used, Sloan Electric, was also very good. I had them install new lighting in addition to the electric work to be done for the dehumidifier. I'm very happy with all work performed and would recommend Peak Energy to anyone who needs similar work done.

They were very good about scheduling and came out right away. The guy was very knowledgeable. I ended up not having the part of the attic done that I had intended because it would require some additional baffles and things, but I did have them blow in insulation in a different part of the attic. I actually think it made a big difference from our energy standpoint. I didn't have done what I intended, but I think what I have done was definitely worth the $99. I had a very good experience. He was very punctual and very knowledgeable. I have 2 attics. One is kind of a walk-up attic where I can stand up and that was what I intended to have done, but that would have required some additional work. He did test our value of the insulation that I did have which was higher than I thought, which was a positive, and gave me an estimate on what it would be to do more insulation. Just because of the design of my attic, that would have required some additional baffles. I opted against that and instead I had him blow insulation above my garage that didn't need that additional baffle. They were very clean and they cleaned up after themselves. Now it's been a year and I think it actually made a difference in cooling in that room. I don't know that I got $500 value, but I certainly got my $99 worth.

I am very pleased with the quality of the work performed. Peak Energy was careful to protect the carpets and furniture within the finished portion of the basement. The materials and workmanship applied to sealing the space, insulating, applying the vapor barrier, digging and installing the sump, installing the dehumidification system, and troubleshooting unexpected problems were all first rate. The final result is very impressive; the space has been transformed from a musty, moldy space for bugs into useable storage space. I am especially impressed by the way that pre-existing problems with my HVAC system were resolved. Mr Rider failed to warn me that my HVAC was not installed and filtered entirely correctly, but that is not his area of expertise. He admitted that he would normally expect to recognize insufficient fresh air intake when planning to seal a crawl space, and was willing to absorb the cost of that portion of the modifications to my HVAC. I am impressed by his professionalism and obvious interest in providing a quality product. The electrician and HVAC contractors that he coordinated with to complete my work were also refreshingly prompt, and their work of similar high quality.
Description of Work: Peak energy provided and estimate for and completed the work necessary to seal and dehumidify our crawl space. I was concerned more about heating our cool basement, and also eliminating the musty smell that has developed since the very rainy summer of 2013. Mr Rider has able to expertly explain why my assumptive fixes were off target, and to recommend methods to improve the indoor air and efficiency of our home.

It went very well overall. They were all very professional. Took care when entering our home and throughout the installation process. The owner of the company came to the job to install the attic cover himself. They were here for about 4 1/2 to 5 hours. We noticed a difference that same night. The areas where we would feel drafts were gone and our home felt more comfortable with regard to temperature right away. Our heat hasn't kicked on as much as the sun goes down and we haven't had to turn our thermostat up at night since them temperature through out the house has remained more consistent. Haven't seen our utility bill yet with these updates now in the home, but we are pleased thus far.
Description of Work: The provider added needed insulation in our attic, installed a custom attic door cover to fit our attic entryway for added draft, heat loss protection as well as installed insulation supports with added insulation in our crawlspace.

Unfortunately, I seem to have the outlying experience with Peak Energy. I was not pleased at all with my interaction. I had inquired on Peak's website to perform an estimate, and in order to do the estimate, I was given the choice of 3 "energy audits" to have be performed (had to wait a week to get a reply to the request). While I'm not a fan of paying for an estimate, I decided to go ahead and do so based on the laundry list of activities performed, etc. Since it was a few hours work, that's understandable. Come audit day, Nathan called me to ask if he could come later since the temp meter would be more accurate. No problem - however I have a soccer game to get to. Nathan arrived at the new time (2 or 230) and performed the audit. I asked a few questions while he was working, including if I would get an estimate (was told yes). I had to run right before 5pm, and Nathan stated he would wrap up the information and give it to me that weekend. Nothing happens - zero followup until the 21st, when I receive a bill. At this point, I have no idea what the results of the audit are, an estimate, any type of real discussion of trade-offs, a sit-down looking at energy bills (listed as one of the items in the audit). Nothing. So I email back stating the above was not done. No response again. I email again the 28th saying I would not pay, and suddenly, there's a response! I missed a call that week, but followed it up with 2 more unanswered calls w/voicemails the next week. Finally, on 11/10, I receive an email with the list of items. Asked again for the estimate on 11/11, along with a specific question re: what I saw as an option. No response until 11/19, when I got an estimate (line items with dollar figures). No response to my question or any offer of discussion. Summary of "The Audit Saga" 10/9 - audit performed 10/10-20 - zero follow up 10/21 - I was billed, I requested job be finished 10/28 - I requested job be finished again 11/3-/117 - I called and left two more voicemails asking for an estimate and work list, etc. 11/10 - I received an non-prioritized list of items to be repaired 11/11 - I requested the estimate. Again. With a question comparing two options. 11/19 - I received the estimate. No response to my question. 11/20 - Get another email around bill due - no slowdown around billing, it seems. At this point, I bailed from the process and wrote a check. So bottom line, I paid for an energy audit but received really zero advice on which direction I should go. I didn't need or want a written report, but for someone to actually act as an adviser and expert to take me through over $15k worth of potential work. I didn't get anything close to a professional service, and frankly I feel a bit cheated. Sure I received an "audit report", but the estimates are almost worthless as I don't plan to go with a company that treats potential customers this way. No advice on what to do, which is the most cost effective, recommendations (beyond do _all_ the list I suppose). If I go by the letter of the what was promised in the service, he still hasn't completed it, as we never went over utility bills, but it's a moot point since all of this. It was hard enough to try to get an actual estimate from them, which is strange as I was trying desperately to give them some business. I provided enough chances to act responsibly, especially since I paid for a service, and was underwhelmed pretty consistently, so I wrote this (my first) bad review. UPDATE: Peak obviously has missed the point here. Peak moved the appointment to a later time, and did _NOT_ finish the work that promised for $275. Of course I don't want something I didn't pay for. I didn't pay for a written report, and I didn't need it - and contrary to what Peak stated, I did NOT ask for a written report - I asked for the findings either via a phone call or however is easiest. What I did expect however (and what was specifically stated to me) was results, an estimate, and a discussion on recommendations. You cannot expect a homeowner to pay $275 for a contractor to walk around the house and keep the findings, conclusion, and estimate to themselves. I asked questions, but conclusions were not ready while I'm walking around. Also Nathan didn't bother to mention to me while at my house that this was his approach and that once he's gone, he's gone (terrible customer service, btw). In fact, he said he would send the remaining information over the weekend. I had requested a simple conversation over the phone (twice, leaving voicemail), 10-15 minutes, to go over the findings, and to provide an estimate for the work. It took me 40 days to get the estimate, with me having to hound them (see the timeline above) to get what I paid for. It took almost 30 days to get the results. It's not a money issue, so your insinuation that "I'm not quite willing to spend money" is frankly a little insulting, and should be to any potential customer. It is NOT a money issue and in fact, I'm finishing up going with a competitor who has slightly higher prices. I did write that I'm interested in doing the work, and TEN days after I sent that email, I received the estimate. So yes, of course I ignored your "questions/concerns" email on the 20th, because based on the correspondence timelines, I wouldn't expect a timely reply. What I'm not willing to do is hire a contractor who doesn't treat their customer well. If I can't get you to give me an estimate without hounding you, how can I trust your customer care?

We typically offer a Home Energy Audit with or without a report. Our audits with a report require quite a bit more time and therefore cost more money. Included in our reports is a breakdown of cost effective improvements that can be made and a prioritized list for these improvements as well as a lot of other detailed information and pictures of our findings. Our typical report is twenty plus pages long. Most homeowner's choose to pay for our report, however a few choose to save the money and go without a report. According to our notes, you specifically said you did not want to pay for the report and did not need the report. Therefore, we recommended you follow the auditor around your house closely and take notes and ask questions as needed. When we are not paid for a report, we typically are finished with our services regarding the paid Energy Audit when our Energy Auditor leaves the customer's house. If a customer asks us for an estimate for improvements then we typically provide one for the services we offer. Our records indicate you asked for an estimate and received an estimate for several items. If you did not follow the Energy Auditor around your house closely and ask questions then unfortunately you may be confused at how to proceed with improvements from here. As per your request, we provided you with a written detailed list of items that were found during the Energy Audit and improvements that could be made. You replied with an email that stated "I'm interested in doing some work, so give me a strong offer and we'll consider it." On November 19th we provided you with pricing for the work we perform. On November 20th we followed up with an email to confirm you received our estimate and asking if you had any questions or concerns. As of now, we still have not heard back from you regarding our estimate. We have a lot of work right now and do not pester our customers for their business. Sometimes it is over a year before we hear back on our estimates which is typically fine with us. We understand some people are not quite willing to spend money when they say they are especially during the Christmas season. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to improve your experience with our company and our future relationship. If there is anything you paid our company for and did not receive please let us know and we will either refund your money or provide you with the services.

It went extremely well. Nathan, though delayed on some appointments, always called to let me know of the delay and the new approximate arrival time. Once Nathan started the job it went very quickly. I decided to get the temperature gauge for inside the house, which would let me know if the unit was working and the amount of humidity in the crawlspace & inside the house. Nathan went above & beyond when he helped me secure my crawlspace door with doorstop insulation. This was very much appreciated. I had previously purchased the doorstop insulation but wanted the dehumidifier installed first so as not to damage the installation. Nathan quickly and efficiently installed to insured that dampness would not come in around the crawlspace door. Nathan is a very nice person as well as professional and competent. He cleaned up the work area, spent time showing me the temperature gauge, and answering my many questions. I would not hesitate to call on Peak Energy for future projects.
Description of Work: check crawlspace to determine if drain needed to be installed. It did not. Set install date and suggested using a hanging kit for the dehumidifier.
