Description of Work: This is the second time we have had work done by Peak Energy. Previously they encapsulated our crawl space in our own home. This time we needed the insulation in the crawl space replaced in a rental property. We hire them since we knew they would not cut corners but would do the job right. We didn't want to have to redo the work a few years down the road.

Better than Expected!!
Description of Work: Nathan and his crew air sealed our crawl space and attic floor plus added blown in insulation in the attic. I have used Nathan's services in the past too, and my experience was same as before- awesome! awesome! awesome! For one he has a very polite and respectful demeanor, and is always willing to go that extra mile to satisfy a customer's requirements. I was very particular about using energy star certified insulation and green air sealing products and he made sure that he got these. He did the extra research and checked with me about these products and only when I checked these at my own end and said yes- he finalized them. He also air sealed my supply vents and recessed lights in the master bedroom for no extra charge because we found these to be extremely leaky. Still further- he did a blower door testing at my request before and after the work too!! It is always a pleasure to work with Nathan and I would recommend him very highly to each and everyone!!

Nathan did a terrific job on our work. He arrived for the estimate on time and inspected the areas to be completed. Nathan gave us a very fair price (was $300 below the clostest alternative estimate) and did not try to sell us other services that we did not request. Prior to the job and during the job he was in contact with the town inspector to ensure the work would meet expectations. He arrived on the scheduled day and decided to do the work himself (his helper was at another job). It took him most of the day, but the work was very neat and the inspector complimented the job. The new Tyvek wrap in our "knee wall" areas around our finished attic was signed off and our permit was completed. Call Nathan for an estimate - he's a NC State grad from Boone, NC and a good guy!

The whole job was smooth and was done in about a week.
Description of Work: We had water damage to our first floor and crawl-space. After having a go-around with our insurance company, adjusters and the insurance companies referred contractors, we found Nathan and Peak Energy. Nathan came out, checked our crawl-space and gave us an estimate. We also had another estimate from another company which was not as much money but they did not do the spay foam insulation which Peak Energy did. We decided to go with Nathan and are so glad we did. He inspected every inch of our crawl space, cleaned out all the mold and even found that two of our heat/air returns were still full of water (something that all the other contractors, inspectors and even the adjuster missed)...Nathan quickly repaired the heating/air ducts for us also. The whole process took about a week. We were also given a temperature gage to moniter the humidity and temp. in the crawl space. We now have a sealed crawl-space which I understand will improve heating/cooling expenses also. We just don't have enough great things to say about Nathan and his team. Yes, we would recommend him to anyone and everyone!! He has a great work ethic and communication with the customer. Great work Nathan!!

Went well. The work took a little longer than they expected but it was all finished in 2 ays and then Mike re did the door blower test and we had found an improvement of 45%.
Description of Work: Mike came out and did a energy audit with a door blower test and showed that our bonus room was very leaky. So we added extra insulation and added a radiant barrier in our attic. In additionally when we were inspecting our duct work in the crawl space he identified that there was water in our ducts so after looking into that we had him replace those as well. his audit even found that when they installed our AC the return was not big enough for the unit to function effectively.

The energy audit was very informative. I would recommend every homeowner have this service performed, and to be present for the test. You can learn a lot about how your house works, and potential heating and cooling problems. Nathan is thorough and patiently answers questions.
Description of Work: Nathan from Peak Energy performed an energy audit of our house. This includes a visual inspection of the interior, attic and crawlspaces, and a blower door test combined with an inspection of all surfaces with a thermal imaging camera. He also performed a "duct blaster" test which measures the leakines of the air duct system.

Very well. During winter the crawl space temp never was below 64 degrees F even when the outdoor temp was in the low 20's. The house was more comfortable this winter. During the wet spring season my house used to smell musty & we had had some mildew occur in one closet. After having the crawl space sealed & spray foam on the walls, this spring we have not experienced any dampness. There has not been a recurrence of mold on the floor joists. The humidity level stays at a "healthy" 46-50 % range in the crawl space. Very pleased with the performance of the work.
Description of Work: This was a complete redo of the crawl space after I found some deterioration on the floor joists due to excessive moisture. This was brought on by hot humid air during spring & summer entering the foundation vents & condensing on the cooler areas under the crawl. The existing thin poly that had previously been applied to the ground was a mess & had not been secured to the piers or walls & was essentially not serving it's purpose. The old poly & damp & deteriorated batt insulation between the joints was removed & the ground raked & smoothed before 11 mil reinforced poly was installed including up the piers & walls. Mold was removed from joists & retardant was applied. Some areas of water weap through the concrete blocks were drylocked. Since I was also replacing and relocating a water heater (this was not done by Peak Energy) the project involved coordination between a plumber & an electrician so as to get the poly under the tank & 4 water softener tanks & in turn not damage the poly. I really appreciated Nathan's willingness to coordinate this with the other contractors I had hired. Drip pans & drain lines were installed for the water tank, well water holding tank, A/C condensation, & water softener & a central drain collection was re-vamped with a back flow valve (so snakes & varmin could no longer enter the line that drained into the woods & end up in the crawl). All areas of air penetration were plugged with spray foam (electrical, plumbing, HVAC). The foundation vents were sealed with foam board & foam spray & the walls were insulated with soy based foam spray including the band joists & sill plates. A dehumidifier was installed along with an interior RF monitor for temp & humidity readings inside the crawl. Since the well holding tank is 21 yrs old a moisture alarm was placed in the drip pan to alert us to any leakage problems. A rotten door that was not well sealed & with a defective lock was replaced by a custom insulated fiberglass door, painted to match the house siding, & new lock installed. Nathan also willingly replaced & better secured a dryer hose which was not part of his usual service. I have noticed the interior of the house feeling less damp & the floors feeling warm despite no longer having batt between the joists. I am anxious to see how much warmer the house will be with the crawl wrapped in this cacoon. I probably am forgetting some other things but this gives folks an idea of the work required for this approx 1,600 sq ft area. Nathan's work is neat & thorough. He is very easy to work with. It is without reservation that I recommend his services.

I chose Peak Energy for this work based on the overall knowledge the owner, Nathan Rider, demonstrated right from our initial meeting. He identified the source of the water infiltration and recommended what turned out to be the correct fix for this problem, which was verified with direct observation after heavy rain in our area during the period of the project. Significantly, Mr. Rider presented the only proposal that matched up with the Advanced Energy report. Based on his recommendation and additional research, I decided to use spray foam instead of Thermax for insulation of the walls; the spray foam seals the walls and above the sill plate (note: spray foam was not in widespread use when Advanced Energy did their field study). The work was performed in a very thorough and professional manner. I am extremely pleased with the outcome.
Description of Work: Our home was built with a common NC crawl space design: dirt floor covered with a thin plastic vapor barrier and vents in the foundation wall. We have experienced a water infiltration problem in the crawl space in addition to the typical summer problems of high humidity and some mold growth. I obtained work proposals from four crawlspace specialists; several recommended a closed crawl space. Each proposal was different in how they would fix the water problem and close the crawl space. If you are considering a closed crawl space, the report from Advanced Energy (advancedenergy.org) a non-profit energy conservation company in Raleigh, NC entitled "Closed Crawl Spaces: An Introduction to Design, Construction, and Performance" is essential reading. This excellent report details the correct procedures for construction of a closed crawl space in an existing home and can be used to judge proposals received in this area of home improvement.

Overall the job went very well. Mr. Rider explained all the details to my satisfaction. It will take time to evaluate the effect of the crawlspace work on our comfort in the house in different seasons. I recommend using Peak Energy for an energy audit and for follow-up work of the types we had done.
Description of Work: We had Mr. Rider in initially to do an energy audit of our home ($99). He did a thorough job and presented us with a list of recommendations. I asked him to price the recommendations that I considered highest priority. These included sealng leaks between the house and crawl space, fixing a vent, laying plastic in the crawl space, and repairing the insulation in the crawl space, which was hanging down from the ceiling of the crawl space. He was unable to repair a tear in a heating duct in the attic because of the slope of the roof. Mr. Rider determined that he could not find a way to repair the crawlspace insulation because of the way the crawlspace was constructed. He recommended that we seal the crawl space using foam in order to limit moisture and reduce the temperature difference between the crawl space and the house. We agreed to this proposal and Peak Energy did the work. This included cleaning up and preparing the crawl space, bringing in a contractor to spray the foam, laying and attaching the plastic sheeting, and installing a dehumidifier to control the moisture. There was no electric outlet in the crawlspace, so Mr. Rider took care of engaging an electrician to add one, and installed a light at the same time. He gave us a monitor so that we can keep an eye on the moisture in the crawlspace. He noticed that the door to the crawlspace was poorly attached, so he improved the fit and added a layer of solid insulation to it.

We contracted with him because he had the lowest price and the best product. He used a combination of open-cell foam and closed-cell foam so our basement is now completely sealed. He also had to grade, put in a drainage system, and clean out the old insulation. We have a few cracks in the foundation and foam was the best way to take care of that as well. We have a drop in humidity under the house from 75% to 40%, and the temperature has risen to a steady 62 degrees. The basement is sealed and it is clean enough that you could live down there. He gave me the state regulations, the national guidelines, and the benefits of completely sealing the basement. We plan on using them to seal the attic with foam in the future. The company was professional and honest, they gave us a lot of specifications, and they did extra work to make sure it was done right. They came back to check on everything and they used thermal imaging to look for leaks. They sealed every single hole from the crawlspace to the living quarters so there are no insects, mold, or moisture. We very highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Peak Energy encapsulated the crawl space under our ranch house. They did an energy analysis, evaluated the house, compared the different methods of encapsulation, and we settled on putting foam insulation on the walls and between the joists.

Start to finish everything went very smoothly. Nathan knows his business, is very thorough, explains what he is doing, what he is seeing and what his recommendations are every step of the way. He explained the various options for rectifying the shortcomings he saw in the home. This ranged from doing nothing to very significant upgrades in several areas of the home. Within a week we had a work order that described everything that we had discussed. Within another week he was in the house and getting started. Nathan is a meticulous worker. He is polite to a fault, likes dogs (a good thing as we have two), and was always here when he said he was going to be here. He arranged another sub to do some spray in insulation, researched insulated lighting for our complex computerized lighting system. He also coordinated work with our electrician as well as our lighting contractor. Nathan spent probably a total of 6 full days in our home. He is a fine carpenter and he and his helper removed an entire ceiling in our porch, removed speakers, lighting, insulation. Supervised spray in insulation, the replacement of 8 low voltage lights with insulated versions, and worked with lighting and our electrician to get all re-installed. He then replaced the ceiling and other than some touch up paint necessary, the ceiling looks like it had never been touched. Great and meticulous work. He also saved the material from the ceiling and re-installed, numbering each grooved pine board so that he could re-install in the same order. Most contractors would not have bothered and would have installed new boards. I estimate that he saved us a couple of hundred dollars by doing this -- never mind the waste going into the landfill. He had a spray foam subcontractor enclose two attic spaces so that there was no outside air infiltrating into the attic space any longer. He also sourced and replace 12 ceiling spots in the great room, office, and master bedroom that were leaking air badly. They were replaced with insulated and sealed LED fixtures that will prevent air leakage in the future. Our house is much "tighter" now with all of this work. We wanted a more comfortable home -- less drafts, less dust entering from outside through poorly insulated fixtures that carry air from the outside into the home. Got dust? Get all lighting fixtures sealed properly. This is not typically done in anything other than new construction and may not be done even in new construction. Dust enters the home through leaks in the insulation. We expect much less dust as a result of the installation of new insulated and sealed lighting fixtures. The floor to our living room above the porch space where he remove the ceiling and re-worked the insulation and lighting is no longer cold -- that had been a major winter problem. I would very highly recommend Nathan without hesitation. He runs his business as I wish everyone would. I did not seek bids on any of the work that he performed instead trusting his knowledge of his subcontractors and his recommendations for work. I am satisfied that I got my money's worth on this job. I wish Nathan good luck in the future as his company grows.
Description of Work: Nathan came and did a complete energy audit on our home with a special device that pulled air into the house. He then used an infra-red imaging device to see where the major leaks were. He was very thorough and explained what was happening every step of the way. I suggest that the homeowner be present during this test so that Nathan can explain what he is seeing and why. You can then discuss his recommendations. He will also write up a report at additional charge but if you are there during the audit I do not believe you need the report. Once he has a tentative agreement with you he will write up and invoice describing the work to be done. You can then review that with him and order the work. We paid nothing to him until about 50% of the work was done and paid the balance at completion.

I was very particular about getting ?green? products in my home. I could only find a very few companies who offered this work. Nathan really went the extra mile to ensure I got exactly what I wanted. He was very prompt in answering my questions and did a lot of researching for me. He was very patient and tried new things. I really enjoyed his modern approach. He was also very polite and respectful during the process. I was very glad that I found him. I would recommend him any day! The prices were very competitive and he didn?t try to push me into doing work that I didn?t want or need. He was honest and informed me of what was actually needed. It was a wonderful experience and I really enjoyed working with him.

The energy company where I live actually pays 50% on energy efficiency audits. I was curious to see my home's energy efficiency rating. Peak energy came and did a complete energy audit. He used a thermal scanner to look at areas where air was being lost by means of poor insulation, etc. He tested the duct work for leaks and was able to actually give me a percentage of air that was being lost through the duct system, even before it entered my house! Luckily my home is fairly new and was relatively efficient! The whole process took a little less than two hours, but it was totally worth it to have that kind of knowledge about my home's energy efficiency. I have had Nathan do other work for me and the experience has always been a pleasure. I will definitely be using Peak Energy for any needs in the future having to do with insulation or energy efficiency.

I have a single car garage and wanted to turn the area into a place that my wife can use for the kids to play during the winter. Basically I wanted to turn it into a playroom, without truly "finishing" it and making it an actual part of the house. Obviously, the garage is much too cold in the winter and much too hot in the summer, so a lot needed to be done in order to allow for this to happen. Nathan, with Peak Energy helped me to create a place where my wife can comfortably keep children during all times of the year. The drywall in the garage was put up without insulation! So he actually went back through and insulated all the walls in the garage. In addition, there was no insulation over the ceiling of the garage. He insulated that as well. He sealed everything very thoroughly and created a space that could be effectively heated and cooled. For example, I tried running a space heater in the garage during the winter (during day time hours) and could never get the temperature to become comfortable. After Peak Energy's work on the garage, I was able to run that same space heater, even on the cold nights and get the garage to heat up to a comfortable temperature. I was very impressed. Not only was I impressed with the work, I was impressed with the professionalism and overall experience of dealing with Nathan with Peak Energy. It was a great experience and I'm very thankful that I had the work completed.

Nathan the owner was very kind and knowledgable as to the problems of where our house was leaking energy he did a great job of performing the work we hired him to do and was very professional and courteous of our time. After doing the additional work to fix the problems he even did a second energy audit to show us the difference the work made. The work performed made a huge difference on the amount of energy our house was losing/wasting and has made a big difference in our monthly energy bills.
Description of Work: Peak Energy came and did an energy audit on my house checking for overall leakage to the inside and outside of the house. They then told me exactly how much was leaking to the outside of the house and gave me solutions along with quotes for fixing the problems. In a later job I had him come back to fix the issues he had found during the energy audit. He air sealed my attic and my crawl space, and added an air tight door to seal the attic to prevent leakage at the entry point into the attic. The prices for all the additional work were very fair and good prices. The $200 was for just the energy audit.

Peak Energy was very punctual with their appointment time to come and perform the work. The work was done in a timely manner and then afterwards Nathan again went over with me what he had done and showed me different places that he had sealed and had photos of some of the major problems he had found while air sealing. I had some ducts that half of the duct was not connected to the vent that blew into the house causing major loss of air flow. He fixed all of these issues, now my loss of air is very minimal. Peak Energy also informed me that Progress energy re-emburses for 50% of the cost of air sealing ducts. He provided me with the paperwork which I sent in and have already received my re-embursement. Peak Energy is wonderful to do business with and I will definately be using them for my next energy efficiency project of sealing my crawl space.

The experience was great!!! Nathan was very thorough and knowledgeable and spent plenty of time answering all my questions. I would recommend Peak Energy to everyone. The inspection turned up more stuff than I ever thought possible. Luckily my duct work isn't too leaky and didn't need any major repair, but we did discover that my hot water heater was leaking Gas. My favorite part of the inspection was seeing the images from the Thermal Camera which identified all the areas where hot air was infiltrating my house this summer. Seeing this was eye opening, and was part of my decision to have a Radiant Barrier installed in my attic. The Radiant Barrier reflects all the heat from entering the attic and keeps it just a few degrees above the outside temperature. This has made a huge difference in my cooling upstairs as the duct work for my A/C is in the attic. Overall my Bills have Decreased as a result of having Peak Energy do all these things to my home. My current average bills are literally half of what the previous owners of my home reported theirs to be. This is really going to add up over the long haul, and will surely be a Major Selling point for my home. Don't hesitate to call Peak Energy and start saving on your bills and experience a more comfortable less drafty home now. You won't regret it!!
Description of Work: Peak Energy performed a Full Energy Audit on my home, which included duct tested, carbon monoxide levels around gas appliance, gas leak testing, Thermal Imaging to discover hot spots on walls and ceilings where insulation was lacking, blower door test to identify and pinpoint air intrusions, and a walk through visual inspection of potential problem areas. I also had a Radiant Barrier installed in my attic, and have begun the installation process for sealing my crawl space.
