I called Phil and he met me at the house at the time he stated that he would and went through what we wanted to have done. He initially stated that it would be 3-4 weeks out before we could schedule work, but was able to start sooner. The team showed up on time each day, covered all of our floors and worked very efficiently. Phil stopped by everyday but one, and stopped by at the end of the job to ensure that we were satisfied. I would hire the team again.
Description of Work: We were remodeling our upstairs bathroom. We completed demolition and asked Phil and his team to install ceramic tile, the sink and vanity, a new toilet and baseboards. They did all of the above work and it looks professionally done. They had to build up our floor due to a raised toilet flange, and they accomlished that task very well.

This is a follow-up note on Hargrove Construction. Even though we had work performed in the past and were happy with the final results, we are sadly disappointed that Phil has been unable to provide us with a quote for additional work. We requested a quote to place hardwood flooring on our entire upstairs areas (excluding bathrooms) back in October 2011. We called several times and were assured that a quote was coming but here it is the end of March 2012 and no quote. I did mention that we thought his labor costs were fairly high and Phil mentioned that the labor cost went down based on the size of the job.
Description of Work: requested an additional quote for a more expansive project.

Overall, it was a difficult project. Phil knows a lot and cares about his customers. We had him come out and give us a couple of different estimates as we learned what work we really wanted done, and he was courteous about this. But from the reviews we expected this project to go a lot smoother than it did. Phil was not low bid but we selected him on the basis of reviews and references. One thing that made sense to us in the contract stage was Phil's insistence that work wasn't even scheduled until all required fixtures were in hand, so that install wouldn't be affected by delivery delays. We had to pick out and buy everything except the two new culture marbled vanity tops, so we agreed that this was a good idea. So we did all the legwork in purchasing plumbing fixtures, shower stall, microwave and light fixtures etc. So we get everything in but it's getting close to the holidays, so we said let's start at the first of the year and he said that's when the vanity tops would be ready. So he started the second week of January. Again it was another case of showing up with subs who don't speak very good English, telling them what to do and leaving. So I had to handle most questions that arose and tried to give them direction when I don't think they could understand me. We had to have them move things a couple of times. But the biggest disappointment was that Phil started the project without having the vanity tops in hand, then it turned out his source went bankrupt. So the project was delayed in the middle of the work, exactly what he promised would not happen. Also, the new Roman tub faucet sprang a leak and we had to call the plumber back to fix it; on two days the plumber was supposed to be at the house he spent most of the day on other jobs. So we felt like we were a very low priority. Finally the new vanity tops arrived and everything got finished up slowly but surely. Now, the only reason Phil's grade isn't lower is because the finished product met our expectations and clearly has added value to our home. We are just sorry for all the frustrations that went along with it and impacted our confidence in Phil. Bottom line, I would say that Phil will probably make it right for you, but you need to be very flexible and expect the unexpected.
Description of Work: We contracted Phil to provide a variety of upgrades: Add undercabinet lighting in kitchen Remove range hood and install OTR microwave Replace vanity tops in two bathrooms Replace all plumbing fixtures in two bathrooms Remove shower stall and replace Remove and replace lighting fixtures and mirrors in both bathrooms

Response from Hargrove Construction Co
These two customers were some of the nicest people that i have worked for since being in business. I have waited this long to post a re-sponce because i was not exactly what to say and was a little taken back by their posting. The last day that i spoke with either of them (the day i picked up final payment), i was told that they were happy with all of the work in the Kitchen and two Baths and how much it had bettered their lives and increased the value of their home. There was one major glich in doing their job and that was with the two new Bath countertops. The company that i had been using for custom counter tops for over 10 years went out of business AFTER i had ordered the counter tops and given them a $500.00 deposit. After several calls to this company asking about a delivery date; i finally found out from another building contractor that they were no longer in business. I then had to find another reputable company to build these counter tops and pay another down payment (which came out of my pocket, not the customers), I explained this to the customer, telling them that there would be a delay of at least 2 weeks in getting the counter tops in. The day after the counter tops were delivered, we went to the customers house, removed the old counter tops, sinks and all old plumbing. We then patched the sheetrock where the old counter tops were removed, installed the new counter tops, new mirrors, new lighting fixtures and towel bars. The plumber arrived late that same afternoon and installed all new faucets, drain lines and inlet lines. It was after 10:00PM before the plumber and i left but ALL was complete when we walked out of the door. In my opinion, that is pretty good service. The customer even E-Mailed me the next day saying "Thanks for hanging in there last night" This customer also mentioned that i used "sub contractors" to do the work; that is not correct. The only "sub contractor" that i used was a licensed plumber. The two men that did all the rest of the work are my permanant employees; one of 18 years the other of 6 years. I only use sub contractors for plumbing, electrical and HVAC work and all of these are licensed. I have been in busuness for over 40 years and any time that a project goes past the estimated time of completion, it causes frustration on the part of the customer. If there would have been anything that i could have done to prevent this, i would have done it.

We were very impressed. The wood paneling in our living room had been damaged. We had other contractors look at it and they said there was nothing they could do. Hargrove came up with a very effective and inexpensive fix! The tile and carpentry in the kitchen was also beautifully done. They came in on budget and on time. They even came out on a Saturday morning to meet the schedule of our other contractor. We would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: They installed ceramic tile in our kitchen along with fixing molding and other trim around the cabinets. They also repaired some damaged wood paneling in the living room.

Mr. Hargroves responded to my call and stopped by our home to see what needed to be done. He did this in a timely and punctual manner. However he did promise us a quote by the following Wednesday and though I have called him and emailed him he has not responded as of today eight days after his promised quote. Very frustrating.

Steve and his helper were punctual and professional. They kept the surrounding areas sealed off and cleaned up daily. We're happy with the work and feel that the price was appropriate for the work performed. Gave it a B cost wise, just because I hate to spend money.
Description of Work: Entry way replacement due to floor warpage. Removed existing flooring and particle board. Replaced particle board with plywood. Replace the entry way with hard wood. We purchased the flooring with Phil's help (pricing included in above) Area is 8.5' x 8.5' including a hall closet. Mr. Hargrove provides a firm quote.

Unfortunately we weren't able to work with Phil because of scheduling issues. He came out twice to check out what needed to be done in order to give an accurate estimate and was extremely thorough. He also was direct and honest about the issues he saw with the job.He ended up giving us a very competitive quote which we surely would have selected if the timing would have worked out. We will need work done in the future, and will turn to him first.
Description of Work: I run a company that needed some remodeling done to our small (1300 sq ft) office space. The work was mostly general construction (walls, electrical, possibly some structural) but not a particularly big project.

Very frustrating and disappointing. I originally contacted the company several months ago to get estimates on the work I needed to be done. He was a little delayed showing up but overall the appointment seemed to go well. Phil was very personable and seemed to be knowledgeable as we walked through everything and he took notes. He left assuring me I would have an estimate by the following week. I waited until the week after the time the estimate was promised and contacted them asking for an update on the estimate since I had not received it yet. Phil apologized and said that he had been busier than expected but would have it to me by the following Monday. That Monday came and went with no estimate so I contacted them again. I spoke with a lady who took a message and then called me back saying that Phil would have the estimate to me by the following Monday. Again I received no estimate or call telling me there was a delay so I tried once more. I spoke with the lady again who informed me that Phils father had been ill and had passed away. Given my parents are ill as well I said that I could wait a little longer if they could just contact me once Phil was able to take care of his family and returned to work. I was assured that as soon as he was back he would follow-up with his estimate. I sent the family a condolence card and said that would be fine. Over a month passed and I had not heard back from the company so I followed up again. I was told that Phil was just getting back and catching up with his estimates and jobs but that he would be able to get it to me by the following week. I said that would be fine. Again I heard nothing so I did a few items myself but I needed to leave town for work and see to my parents. I just returned and contacted the company again reminding them of the situation and asking to meet with Phil so that he could see the changes and additional work I had in mind. The lady with whom I spoke remembered me (since I live in the same subdiv that Phil's son lived in, the fact that I had two ill parents and that i went to the trouble to send a condolence card, etc.). She called me back quickly and said she confirmed that Phil could come at 2pm Thursday (10/6/2011). I waited for Phil until about 2:45 and called to check for an update. I was told that Phil sent me an email. While on the phone I checked for the email and it was timestamped for 1:51 (10 minutes before our appointment) to say he found his old notes and did not need to come by and would have the estimate to me by "early next week"; I asked the lady if she explained to him that things had changed and she said she had told Phil everything including the fact that I wanted this followup meeting. It's hard to find good, reliable companies but when you find one that is really good at their work I generally feel that they are worth waiting for, particularly if they have family situations. That being said, I am really surprised with the level of disregard and lack of professionalism. After all my waiting and willingness to work with them, not even an apology or courtesy call to discuss whether or not the new meeting was really needed (despite my explaining things had changed and the fact that it was already scheduled). All I get is yet again I will get it by early next week (there's only so many times someone can stand to hear the same promise especially when it just doesn't happen). I recommend they improve their system of appointments and follow-ups, and give some consideration and courtesy to potential customers that have gone out of their way to accommodate them when they have dropped the ball. My suggestion to other Angie's List members is to not waste your time if they drop they ball even once. I was much too nice and ended up wasting my time with nothing to show for it except for multiple promises over a number of months of "early next week".
Description of Work: Tile work in Kitchen (floors), Bathroom (surround), some exterior siding replacement, trim replacement, window repair/replacement. Some of aspects of this work (the exterior siding and trim work) was to re-do/repair the work done by another contractor that ended up botching the job.

Well, the price wasn't cheap, but this was a custom cabinet, made by hand. It took several weeks from the first phone call to the company to the installation of the product, but then Mr. Hargrove informed me at the outset that there were some other ongoing matters that needed his attention. He was thoroughly professional and polite at all times. He took very careful measurements of the space and "borrowed" a door off the pre-existing cabinets, in order to match the style. He was always responsive to our input during the process and never left a mess. The finished product looks wonderful, and it is clear that he lavished a good deal of care on it as he built it and installed it. The color of the stain used does not exactly match that on the older cabinets, but I understand that matching a new stain to one that's been in place for 20+ years can be difficult. Overall, I am very pleased with his work and would recommend him for any custom woodwork you may need.

The member has every right to be upset with me. I have waited this long to post a response because i was waiting for a reply from her to a letter that i sent to her about a week ago. The letter follows. Member I am personally and professionally embarrssed by missing the appointment that i had made with you. I remember making the appointment with you by phone. I have no excuses other than i just forgot to write it in my day timer. I have NEVER missed an appointment unless i called and had to re-schedule. I want to make amends in some way, other than just saying that i am sorry. If you have not had the work done, i will do the job for 10% less than ANY written estmate you have received from a reputable contractor. If the job has been completed, i will do any other work that you may need to be done up to $500.00 in value for FREE. Just let me know how i may make amends to you. Builders arrived on time each day and worked from 8:30 through 5:30 all days - sometimes more. Construction of shed is top quality with attention to detail. Delivery of materials was on time and execution could not have been better. Thoroughly recommended contractor.
Description of Work: Design and construction of custom 12ft by 12 ft garden shed. All materials used were of excellent quality and the workmanship is also very good. The garden shed took a week to construct and uses Hardiplank siding and painted the same colors as the main house. Very competitive pricing compared to other local sources of "standard" sheds.

Average. No work done as contractor did not follow up with any type of written or verbal estimate. Don't think if I have to chase after company for an estimate, that I want to use them as my contractor.
Description of Work: I have several home issues that need to be corrected/repaired/replaced. Contacted this company due to its 37 excellent ratings and zero negative reports. Took about a week for company to return my call (they have no email address) but once we did connect they were very personable and only a few days to actually get contractor out to house, on a Sunday in fact. So I was initially very impressed. Arrived 10 minutes late but that is basically "on time" in NC. Did a thorough walk-through, very professional and helpful explanations but some recommendations were a bit over the top (qualified his recommendatons as "preventive, something to consider-like tearing off ALL of my house's siding and replacing). The contractor said he would get me estimates within a week but he had to check with several subcontractors. He asked me my time frame to get things done and I said I needed a lot of the work completed this summer--- well, it's been three weeks and still no estimate or follow-up. Didn't even leave a business card. Very disappointed but now I know what to expect with these walk-throughs. Also decided to handle all the hiring myself for the various projects rather than depend on a company who just subcontracts anyways.

Response from Hargrove Construction Co
I remember this person very well. My E-Mail address is listed on my company profile and they gave me thier E-Mail address so that i could send the estimate to them. If i did not give them a business card (which is usually the first thing that i do), i was remiss. I do not know of any reputable building contractors that do not use any sub-contractors ( electrical, plumbing, mechanical, painting and etc.). The exterior of this person's home was in poor condition and the paper composite siding was starting to deterioate. In my opinion it is a waste of money and time to "patch" this type of siding. I felt upon leaving that this person and i were not going to be able to work together. Usually in this situation i will contact the person and let them know that i am not intrested in bidding on the work. I take full responsibility for not doing so in this case. I wish them the best in finding someone to do the work to thier satisfaction. Phil Hargrove Hargrove Construction Co.

They came in and repaired some grout in the shower and around the tub. With the exception of the alarm button, it went great. We had a small glitch about the look of the attic door when closed, and Phil made it look like I wanted. I am pretty picky about things. I scheduled a lot of work on a 70s house back to back. In retrospect, that wasn't the best way because it made them all feel very rushed. But Phil did a great job and he sticks with his quoted amount unless you add on something and is then very upfront about it.
Description of Work: Repaired and re-did deck with small extension added; put up exterior door and painted it; put in disappearing stairway. Replaced all bad boards on the deck leaving an existing handicap ramp and made it all match. I would say the carpentry work can only be described as "superb". Only small glitch was an alarm button was lost from my exterior door despite several communications about that; Phil Harwell sent a check to cover the replacement right away because the old door had already been taken away. I got an estimate for hardwood refinishing but went with someone else; however, I cannot recommend Phil strongly enough for carpentry. Awesome! 9//23/11--the outside door that was installed has been nothing but trouble. From the first day, I told Phil it was too tight to close properly--this is the one connected to the alarm. Since then twice more he has had to come out and work on the door and today I have called again. It will not close. It is a cheap door in an area that needed something for outdoors, and I am really, really, sick of dealing wtih it. I am dropping my rating to a "C" because of this door. It has been more trouble than all the other things I have had done from all the other companies combined. 9/27/11--Phil came and fixed the door. Actually, it wasn't the door he put up. It was two pine shims in the door facing that had swelled up. He removed them and said he'd leave the molding on the door frame off until after the temperature changed. He extended my warranty on the door 12 months, so I am pleased with that. The door has been an issue for a while but it turned out not to be because of the door installation.

From start to finish it was a dream come true. I have heard of many issues with contractors - but we were so pleased with Phil and his team that we will use them again in the near future. We needed to have a tree removed from our front yard that was right up against the house. They arrived right on time, removed the tree, and truthfully you would never even know that a tree was once in that spot. They removed every branch, etc and left nothing behind. We also had our kitchen and kitchen nook area redone. There was wallpaper that had to removed and it was not a fun job. We had done a few rooms ourselves and didn't have the energy to do another one (the kitchen was a beast). Phil's team arrived right on time and got to work. I was away for work (my husband was at the house) and was so pleased to come home to a sparkling kitchen. Considering that there was a ton of drywall work that had to be done prior to painting I was expecting to have some dust to clean up. That was not the case. Everything looked perfect and my husband said they covered every surface, etc. I was very pleased with the workmanship. You can not tell that the walls have been resurfaced. The painting is perfect. We will for sure be using Phil and his team again in the near future. We have many more projects we need to have accomplished and look forward to having great work done next time as well. You can't find a better team of people to work with......
Description of Work: We had a tree removed from our front yard as well as our entire kitchen and kitchen nook area redone. We had the wallpaper removed and the wall repaired (since the wallpaper took off most of the dry wall) and the walls primed and painted.

They are good people. They understood exactly what caused the things to happen. They tried low cost things so that I did not have to pay them. I'm really impressed with their honesty and knowledge. They showed up on time; in fact they came early. Their price is reasonable and fair. There are absolutely no flaws in what they did. They had extremely high level of integrity.
