Purchased a service call from Green Horizon around May 22 to investigate the insufficient cooling in the house. They sent technicians to investigate the issue. The technician inspected the AC unit outside the house and the zone dampers located in the attic. Technician said the issue is not enough refrigerant so they filled up the unit with refrigerant. Around June 25, started to notice issues with thermostats never shutting down at the set temperature. This would keep the AC running causing extremely high electric bill. Called Green Horizon again to investigate and this time technicians came on June 26 to "investigate". They went up the attic to inspect the damper. They recommended to replace the thermostats. The technician promised to return with new thermostats on Monday June 29 between 3-4 pm. They never showed up on the agreed upon date nor did they even bother to call me to say they will not be able to make it to the appointment. I had to call them several times to seek an explanation for why they did not show up and also why they did not inform me about not coming. Moreover they said if I wanted them to install new thermostats I would have to wait at least 1 week since they did not have the thermostats in stock. They brushed off my question regarding why they never bothered to call me for not showing up on agreed upon date. Anyhow, as per their recommendation I purchased the thermostats myself and installed them. That did not fix the issue. I had to get hold of another AC company to look into the issue. When they went up the attic to inspect they found the zone damper wires had been ripped out by someone. This was the real issue and not the thermostats. After trying to seek an explanation from Green Horizon, they first said their technician never went into the attic to investigate the problem. Later they come back and say they only looked into the without actually going in it. When I said I saw the technician use ladder to go inside the attic and come down right in front of my eyes they completely deny it. Had to get the other AC company to replace the damper and tested it with old thermostats and everything worked perfectly. In a nutshell they tried to create a repair for themselves and then deny it because other company found out what they did. And if that is not enough, they accuse me of lying and making things up! They claim they have no "motive" to create repairs for themselves. However their actions and indicate otherwise. Their deliberate attempt to create a repair for themselves has cost me over $500 to fix the whole thing.
Description of Work: The technician created a "repair" for themselves by deliberately damaging the AC unit.

[Member name removed], Thanks for your review. As we discussed on the phone, your version of what happened is entirely false and misleading. I offered to come out myself to look at this "damaged" damper, and you never responded. I started this business with the intent and mission to provide honest work and do what we say what we are going to do. I trust our employees and none of them have any incentive to "create" a repair. None of our techs are paid commission or bonuses based on how much business they create. Again, I am sorry about your experience, but I stand behind our employees and I am confident we did nothing wrong. Sincerely, Bobby Ferrel Owner

They did a very thorough job of checking the heater and air conditioner. Found a leak in the evaporative coil. That is under warranty from Rheam and we've had difficulty getting the local installer of the unit (only 3.5 years old) to honor the warranty. No final results yet.

The service tech sent was in training and did a good job. He found a problem with downstairs unit and advised turning unit off till other tech could determine the problem. Unfortunately, the summer weather had kicked in with temps in the 100s. The next day, after some prodding, a more experienced tech was scheduled to come out and found no problem. The issue was the first tech made an error by taking a measurement with the unit's cover removed which resulted in a false positive. My issue was the poor attitude of the more experienced tech. He complained to me about how he didn't have time to train everyone and my house felt cool enough to him. I explained that the upstairs unit still worked. It was not a pleasant experience and based on that I will not use this provider again.

I purchased a deal for an air conditioner tune up. The gentleman that came out to service my air conditioner was polite and professional. He worked quickly through the long checklist of items to check and clean. He even helped me determine what was going on with my thermostat which ended up being just a loose wire that he fixed quickly for no extra charge. Everything was working properly. I would use this company again.

I had an excellent experience with Green Horizon, from scheduling the initial inspection to completion of work. They were fast to respond to my initial inquiry, scheduled the walk through quickly, did a great job explaining their findings and giving me different options, worked with me on scheduling the project since I had multiple other contractors working around that period, and quick to finish the job. I should have written this review months ago but am only now getting to it because I have another contractor doing work in the house, completely unrelated to what Green Horizon did last year. I just overheard one of today's contractors tell a colleague what a fantastic job had been done in sealing the crawlspace. That's one thing I can count on whenever anybody has to get underneath this house: without fail, everybody comments on the quality job that was done and how clean it is. Green Horizon did a fantastic job and I recommend them without any hesitation.

I went on Green Horizon's website to obtain a free quote. Their office contacted me within 2 days. The quote appointment was made within a week. Bill Graves came the the house and arrived on time. We chatted about options and he asked about my specific goals for the insulation. He went into the attic and I followed to ask questions. I also showed him a garage area that I thought may need insulation. He did not try to upsell for spray foam and educated me on the differences. He provided some guidance for DIY tips in the garage and we settled on attic blown in fiberglass insulation with air sealing around the light fixtures. He was very professional and took the time to really look at the needs of the house, even looking at the type of air ducts. I had the official quote by email within two days. I scheduled the work to be done a month out. I did have to remove some items that were stored in the attic and remove a few subfloor boards for better coverage. The competing quote I received did cost $75 upfront and the total price for the job was similar. The "inspection" did not seem as thorough. I decided to go with Green Horizon because Bill made a great first impression, was very professional and showed a genuine interest in making the right improvements to my home. The day of service, two men arrived on time. They protected my carpet with plastic and I showed them the space. They got too work right away and were done in about 2 hours. They showed me the finished product, insulation that is up to code R-38. My next month's energy bill was bout $30 lower than the previous year! Yay for energy efficiency!

The crews were outstanding in their professionalism and execution of the project. They were on time, polite, and appear to have done very high quality work. I wish that I had a little more specific about the routing of the ductwork, as it is entwined with some of the plumbing to save space and would likely result in having to temporarily disconnect the ductwork in order to make plumbing repairs. They also filed with PSNC and Duke Energy for $475 in rebates for installing efficient equipment. We have been very happy so far with their work and I would not hesitate to call them for additional work. We are considering having some more work done in the attic and basement with insulation and I will definitely be calling Bobby.
Description of Work: Green Horizon removed the existing (totally non-conforming to code) gas pack unit that was located under the deck. In its place, they installed a 96% efficiency furnace in the basement, ran all necessary gas lines and exhaust, and installed a 14 SEER Amana A/C unit behind the house. They also removed all existing ductwork and replaced it with R-8 lines in a very efficient manner.

Initially, as part of the house purchase, the sellers agreed to remediate crawlspace mold. A co-worker suggested calling Green Horizon about encapsulating the crawlspace. They were able to insulate and condition the crawl space for roughly the same price as a different firm had estimated for remediation alone. As I was replacing an electric stove with a gas range, they were asked about how best to coordinate having the gas line extended, and that's how it was learned they do that work too. The crawlspace crew did most of their work while I was at work for the first day. The second day I was there because the gas line crew and a locksmith all needed access to the interior. Both crews did what they needed to do in a timely and professional manner, and then cleaned up after themselves. It all went very well, especially considering it was going on the week after moving into a the house, and Green Horizon is who I'll call any time crawlspace encapsulation is needed.
Description of Work: Green Horizon cleared the crawlspace of mold, then encapsulated the crawlspace, and also installed a gas line to the kitchen for a new stove.

They were really good because I was getting a real run-around from my warranty company. They were saying that I had put in the wrong Freon and I said I did not. I had to find out what was wrong and I have not had them do work for me, but they were very impressive in their analysis of what was wrong. Then, they sent me a report and they were really good. I definitely would use them, but I am trying to get my warranty plan to cover a day’s problem. They were amazing.
Description of Work: I did actually call Green Horizon to get their opinion about the problem. They were nice enough to come out and did testing to see what was actually going on.

We hired them a few years ago to replace our AC and the duct work, so we thought it would be best to hire them to replace the furnace as well. I called and they had the records for our last job so they sent out a project manager to do the quote. The price was fair and it seemed like a pretty straight forward job so we went ahead. The job was poorly managed and coordinated and Green Horizon just didn't seemed concerned with any sort of professionalism. The day of the install the technicians came, but not a supervisor. When they were finished they were not able to get heat to come from the vents so they said they would have a supervisor come out and they left. We waited two weeks and didn't hear a word so I called Green Horizon and they didn't seem to know anything about it. They took a message and the project manager called me a few days later. He basically said the system worked fine we just didn't know what we were doing so he would come out and show us that we were wrong and the job was done correctly. I took another day off of work to be there and within three minutes the project manager admitted the job wasn't done correctly. The thermostat his team installed was for a completely different system, the exhaust pipe had been done wrong and the wrong CO monitor was installed. So we had to schedule another visit to get it resolved. The next visit, they realized they needed an electrician to come and install something else before they could complete the job. Meanwhile Green Horizon continued to invoice us for the job that was not done and when I called to talk to some sort of supervisor and complain I was just passed back to the project manager. The job was finally completed and actually passed the city's inspection on July 24th.

[member name removed], I am very sorry for your experience with this furnace replacement. I had no idea the job was being handled so poorly. I am going to immediately review all of our documents and information to find out what happened and to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else in the future. If it's any consolation, the project manager on your job is no longer with us. Hiring qualified people can be very difficult and we are constantly trying to make sure we have employees that care about quality work and the customer experience. Please let me know if there is anything I can do at this point to make amends for our poor performance. My mobile number is 919-949-0705 and my email is bferrel@greenhorizon.com. Mr. [member name removed], I'm sorry we weren't able to schedule this AC repair for you. We have been extremely busy and it is very important for us not to overcommit and to make sure we handle and prioritize our existing commitments, before we take on new commitments. I am disappointed hat you would give us an F for our honesty with you. That seems a little harsh. Bobby Farrell visited our home to review energy improvement options. We focused on the attic and crawlspace. He said we'd get the biggest bang for the buck by starting with the crawlspace. Our home is 13 years old, and the crawlspace is pretty damp. There was ample evidence of mold growth on the floor joists and other material stored in the crawlspace. He told us exactly what they would do, and sent a proposal within 24 hours. The proposal covered 3 levels of service, good, better, best. We elected to go with the best. We were then turned over to his scheduling manager who said the job would take 2 days. The crew showed up exactly as scheduled. They did the work over two days. Initially, they did not seal the wood framing on the exterior walls. When asked, they sent someone out to do that work. We weren't completely satisfied with the job. It boiled down our interpretation of the work we expected based on language in the work order. We worked with the scheduling manager to iron this out. They made a third visit to complete the work, which was done to our satisfaction. Afterwards, they sent the invoice which reflected the original quote, and included an Angie's List discount. The other communication issue during the course of the work concerned the dehumidifier. The work order sort of specified a brand name dehumidifier but the language wasn't clear. We wanted to know exactly which dehumidifier would be installed because it was the most expensive item on the install list. After some back and forth, we agreed on the exact dehumidifier model. They were very accommodating during these discussions. It never got difficult, each item was just a matter of talking through the issue. Most of the communication was via email and phone calls. It was very nice that they remained very dedicated to completing the job to our satisfaction. We were more interested in the quality of the job than the time it took to complete the work. The Green Horizon staff were professional throughout the project. They are very good at this kind of work, and if we choose to do improvements in the attic, we'll be contacting Green Horizon.
Description of Work: Crawlspace upgrade, which included installation of a vapor barrier on the ground, repositioning the floor insulation, sealing off the living space, sealing the exterior wall and all the air vents, and finally installing a dehumidifier.

We had originally contacted Green Horizon based on the review here at Angie's List to look at our upstairs heating and cooling system as it has never worked properly since we moved into the home about 4 years ago. As the way things go our main level heating system decided to quit completely that morning. The salesman came out and looked at the upstairs unit and told us that the unit was half the size it should be and that the duct work would need to be replaced as it had not been installed correctly when the previous owners of the home had completed some additions. He was also kind enough to have a serviceman drop by and check the main floor unit. The serviceman found that a switch had burned out and he was able to get the system running temporarily but recommended replacement as the unit was 17 years old and leaking a small amount of carbon monoxide into the home. We elected to get an estimate to replace both units and repair the duct work which were emailed to us in a short time. After reviewing the estimate and doing some research about the replacement units, we decided to get a second opinion and had a second company from Angie's List come out and give us their opinion about what needed to be done. The second company inspected everything in the upstairs and down as well as the exterior unit and made the same recommendations as Green Horizon that the upstairs unit was undersized and the duct work was incorrectly installed, They also gave us an estimate to do the repairs. We opted to go with the second company, not because we were dissatisfied with Green Horizon, they were excellent and gave great service, but the second company came in with a lower price and a better warranty. I would certainly recommend Green Horizon as they went the extra mile to investigate our second floor problem and if fate hadn't dealt us some other unexpected costs, such as replacing siding and trim we would have chosen them without getting a second opinion, but due to the large number of other items failing on the home (17 years old) we had to chose price in order to keep our budget in check.

The service crew that came out did a great job and worked hard to get all the duct runs setup in the tight basement of my 1941 home. I'd give them A's across the board. That being said, the process of actually getting appointments to have the ductwork serviced was painful. On several occasions I'd call for an appointment and either not hear back from the service rep or they'd schedule an appointment with me and nobody would show up. I felt like I had to constantly stay on top of the staff via phone calls to make sure the work got done- something I would expect from a "friend-of-a-friend handyman", not a professional company. I felt like I should have been on their payroll for the amount of back-and-forth I had to do. It amazes me that I haven't seen any other reviews on Angie's List that are similar to my experience. I will note that the owner, Bobby Ferrel, was very professional and responsive to my inquiries. Unfortunately, most of the the remainder of his staff could use some training on how to manage an effective office. This company could do great things in Durham and go from a "C" to an "A" if they got serious about customer service. Would I suggest this company to a friend? Probably not. I appreciate their green offerings, but the hassle of getting the work done really soured the experience for me. UPDATE: I recently contacted Green Horizon again in regards to a $175 Duke Energy rebate that was supposed to have been filed on my behalf at the time of my service. The rep that I spoke to was professional, but had to inform me that the rebate had never been filed and has since expired. After admitting that it was mistake a Green Horizon's part, I was given an apology in lieu of a $175 rebate. Not much I can do at this point, but "salt in the wound" nonetheless.

[member name removed], thanks for taking the time write this review. I appreciate he feedback and I will make sure I find out why you had such a difficult time with us. I was somewhat in the loop near the end of the project, and I was nder the impression that the scheduling issues were a combination of problems with everyone's (contractor, homeowner and inspector) availability. From the looks of your review, I had bad information. We always try to be considerate of our customers schedules and we also want to show up when we're supposed to. If there's anything I can do to make up for this, please let me know. If you're interested, I could offer you a complimentary winter tune-up on your furnace. Thanks again for the feedback and the work and we will make adjustments based on your advice.

We have found that our heating and air conditioning bills have been much lower since our work was completed. I, the lady of the house, also notice that there is less dusting needed since the sealing of our attic was completed. A plus that I did not count on. The foam sealing of our attic has also allowed us to store things in our attac, like pictures, candles and anything we were concerned would be damaged by the heat or cold. We have recommended this company to many of our neighbors and family members.
Description of Work: We had closed-cell foam sprayed in our attic spaces.
