I have used Brown Brothers for all my plumbing needs. Their prices I have found are pretty average when compared to the rest of the companies in my area. Not great, but not bad either. I called about a week in advance to schedule the appointment when I was off from work. No problems, got me on the schedule. the night before I received a call letting me know they would be at my house at 8:30a.m. which is great, I didn't have to sit around waiting for them!. Shane with Brown Brothers actually arrived a few minutes early, and got right to work replacing all the knobs, diverter, spout, trip lever and stems. He did an outstanding job, Quality work, took care to wear foot protection as to not track dirt into the house. I really appreciate that. He also gave me some tips, to extend the life of my stems, and even cleaned out the tub. Shane was excellent. Very courteous, and I highly recommend Brown Brothers and Shane!

Although the crawl space under the house had standing water in it, Curtis waded in and had found the leak in no time. He replaced a gate valve with a ball valve and repaired the pvc pipe which had developed a hole where it went under the foundation. I will now use ball valves over gate valves. Although I used to be quite handy at fixing these things myself, I had no clue how to attack this problem. I have used this company for my a/c unit and to replace the pump at the bottom of the well before. I have never had to call them back for defective work. The phone lady was pleasant and told me when to expect service. I got a phone call to insure I was home and that it was a convenient time from Curtis prior to his arrival. When they replaced the well pump years ago, they ran a separate pvc pipe for the electric which the previous provider did not. I had to pull that pump once and splice the wires back together after they wore out spinning against the well sides during power up and down. The extra pipe will prevent that.
Description of Work: Found a leak in well water system under the foundation and repaired it. I had tried several times to find the leak and was unsuccessful.

We discovered the leaking water pipe in our crawlspace on a Thursday evening. We shut off the water supply that evening and called Brown Brothers first thing the next morning. We were told that there were three calls ahead of us that morning but that they would be able to get out to us that same day. We received a phone call later that day and were told they would be there in about 20 minutes. True to their word they showed up about 20 minutes later, around 1pm. The plumber was friendly and professional, and had the pipe fixed in less than an hour. We were happy with the work performed. We have used Brown Brothers previously for other work, including a Hot Water Heater replacement, and have always been satisfied with their performance.

Called main office, got appointment, plumber arrived (after phoning ahead) during afternoon "appointment window". Quickly and competently completed faucet repair. Gave good advice on necessity (or non-necessity) of further work needed. I have used Brown Brothers exclusively for a number of years now since I have always been happy with the quality of their work. I suspect others might do the work for less, but I am confident that Brown Brothers will do a good job, the first time.

I've called on Brown Brothers for plumbing work for approximately 12 years. They have removed an old gas heater, replaced a water heater and performed several other services at my home. They have also worked at the company townhouse for me, and helped a friend with a faulty water heater and a well pump at my request. Robert has answered the two most recent calls, and he is always great. He is very helpful, efficient and knowledgeable. Once when my faucet needed a Moen replacement cartridge, he told me how to order it under the warranty and came back to install it when it arrived. All of their plumbers have been the same way, and I wouldn't call anyone else for plumbing work.
Description of Work: The water bill at the company townhouse has been high for several months, and I called Brown Brothers to come out to look for any leaks. Robert came out and showed me how to examine the meter to see if there was water flow when everything was cut off. He also repaired one of the toilets which wasn't cutting off completely.

The work went as quickly and professionally as one could possibly want. There was very little inconvenience to my household as the gentlemen doing the work were innovative in providing a temporary water line to my house from the city connection at the meter. When they did the work inside my house on the water heater, they were very careful not to track in any soil. They completed the cleanup outdoors beautifully and the landscaping looks as it did prior to the work having to be done. Without reservation, this company will be my first call for any future plumbing needs. Great job, guys!!!
Description of Work: Brown Brothers came to replace my next door neighbor's outside water line that broke while I was on vacation. In the course of doing that they also had to replace my line because of proximity. The line had two breaks that were discovered when I returned to vacation. Brown professionals responded quickly and effectively on a Saturday to handle the issue. Throughout the two weeks it took to complete the repair which turned out to be extensive involving digging a trench, removing tree roots, and pulling a flexible line from my house connection to the water meter, the gentlemen were professional, courteous, and extremely attentive to detail. They kept me informed of each phase and the work required. This was done at no cost to me because it was effectively the result of the work being done on my neighbor's line. As well, during the course of the work it was found that my water heater (which had been replaced by another company several years prior) required replacement due to a faulty connection that resulted in extensive rusting of the top of the water heater. Brown Brothers did the replacement quickly and effectively at a very reasonable cost for parts only. Brown Brothers did the labor gratis for what they said was the "inconvenience to me regarding the broken water line outside my house." This was completely unexpected and unnecessary but was greatly appreciated by me.

Initially I was pleased that our contractor from Raleigh was using a Durham business. We had hired Brown Brothers years before and they had done good work on a major pipe repair. I was extremely disappointed this time. First, they kept changing the day they would come, delaying the project by at least a week. When they finally came, they didn't apologize, did the work very quickly and splattered nasty stuff around the (finished) basement and up the stairs that I didn't find until the next day. They claimed they wouldn't need to test the new lines when the water was turned on which was an important detail since they had caused so many delays that the wood floors were being redone when the water was to be turned on. Not surprisingly, the dishwasher and the faucet leaked. Fortunately, we caught the problems quickly and another subcontractor (the cabinet installer!) fixed the problem. Later we had problem with the drain pipe backing up when the washing machine (on the floor below) was run. The contractor ended up doing the work himself because Brown Brothers was so unreliable.
Description of Work: The amount we paid is an estimate since they were used by the contractor as subs since his wasn't available. Installed new sink, drain pipe, faucet, dishwasher and new water line to refrigerator as part of a kitchen remodel.

I have used Brown Brothers for several years to service my HVAC and water well. When I call to schedule a service visit, the office is polite, and they are honest about the backlog and when they can arrive. Usually a repair technician can be scheduled for the next day, but they will try to work me in if there is an emergency, such as no heat. The technicians have always arrived at the appointed time, and I have found all of them (at least four different ones) pleasant to work with. The Brown Brothers technicians are knowledgeable, and they work fast. In general, they do not try to upsell -- if you want to keep patching an old system, they will do their best. I have a 20 year old boiler system that supplies heat and hot water, so it must work 24/7. The unit has a small steam leak and has had multiple control unit failures. Brown Brothers had recommended that I install a new system, which will cost in the neighborhood of $20K. However, they are doing their best to keep the current system working until I decide to make the investment. The technicians are thorough and point out potential problems, such as a small coolant leak in one of my air handlers. Again, the recommendation was to replace the handler, but they are working with me to keep everything working for now. In over five years of service, I have had only one bad experience with Brown Brothers. The boiler room had a large water leak while I was out of town, and my wife called Brown Brothers. The technician (first time at our house) diagnosed a hole in the bottom of the hot water holding tank. That did not sound right to me, so I told them to do nothing until I got home. When I inspected, I found that the condensation pipe from the air handler was clogged. The bottom of the air handler had over 3 inches of water, which was leaking out the bottom and running under the hot water holding tank. I was able to unclog the pipe and dip out the water (which I had learned by watching another Brown Brothers technician previously). The technician had made a quick diagnosis without investigating other possibilities. However, this is not the norm from Brown Brothers -- they are usually correct in their diagnoses and rapid with the fixes. Without that one bad experience, I would rate Brown Brothers an overall "A". The prices seem to be ok -- I feel like I am paying to keep my house working, but I am not being gouged.

Excellent work - Brown Brother's was able to handle my late request to get my irrigation backflow inspected. I had misplaced my city paperwork and they were able to take care of all the necessary paperwork on my behalf without my being involved. They have been my irrigation backflow plumbers the last two years, and I have been consistently happy with their professionalism, timeliness, and ability to make the work as easy on me as possible. Their prices have also not disappointed.

About one year ago, our sewage pump stopped working and Brown Brothers came out and cleaned it out. They told us that we needed to replace the unit (in the future) because it didn't have a fail-safe on it and although it was clogged, it kept running and was very hot. So, in November, I scheduled a day for Brown Brothers to come out to replace the unit and took off of work. Only, once they got there, they said we shouldn't replace the unit because it was running fine and they had no clue what I was talking about when I mentioned the "fail safe." Instead, they prepared a written replacement quote a week later. When we scheduled the appointment, we asked repeatedly if they were going to replace it when we had our appointment or if they needed to come and get a model number to order the part. We were assured that they would do the work. So, I took the whole day off for nothing. Before the plumber left, I mentioned that our garbage disposal was backing up and the plumber took a plunger to it and charged us $120.00. And to make matters worse, it never fixed anything at all. So, 2 days ago, our sewage pump died which meant the sewage was backing up into our house. We called the Brown Brothers evening line and they told us to call back in the morning. So we called at 8am and we were told that when they had a plumber available, they'd give us a call. We had no idea when that would be. An hour? The next day? We waited until 12pm and called another plumber who said they would have someone there in 30 minutes. I called Brown Brothers back to tell them nevermind and was told again that they had planned to call when someone was available - probably after lunch. I had a bathtub full of sewage and I'm supposed to wait 18 hours for service? Why even have an on-call person?
Description of Work: Did not replace sewage pump as asked. Plungered garbage disposal.

After 2 plumbers failed to correct a blockage of our kitchen sink drain, Brown Brothers corrected the problem by exercising thoughtfulness and thoroughness. Unlike the other 2 plumbers, the technician from Brown Brothers worked diligently to correctly identify that this drain was, in fact, vented through the attic (the others never bothered to look in the attic) and that the vent was blocked (likely from debris during a recent replacement of roof shingles). In addition to correcting the drainage problem the technician properly installed our garbage disposal and connected our dishwasher to the drain. We are extremely grateful for the professionalism of Brown Brothers and recommend them to all our friends.

Robert walked in the door, disassembled the faucet, replaced a couple of old internal parts, and reassembled the faucet in approximately 120 seconds. He was professional, courteous, friendly, and fast. I would, and do plan to call them again for service. (75% of my motivation for calling them in the first place was to judge their performance. I am moving out of the area and will be renting my house, so I wanted to have an established relationship with a good plumber before leaving the area.) I had two minor quibbles. (1) Robert showed up at 8am instead of 830am, so I was still in the shower. Not a big deal. (2) There was a small vanity piece on the faucet covering a screw head that broke while he was removing it. It didn't make a bit of a difference to me or Robert, but my wife noticed it later. Neither of these things would stop me from working with them again. The price was certainly high for the job, but I knew going in that I was using a cannon to kill a mosquito. They have a $97 minimum charge per visit, so presumably much more work could have been completed for the same price.
Description of Work: Robert from Brown Brothers fixed a leaky faucet in my kitchen. The faucet was made by Delta around the year 2000. The faucet was dripping every couple of minutes or so. Now it works perfectly.

We had used this plumber several times over the years. We called and asked them to repair two leaking faucets. Plumber showed up on time and did work in 5-10 minutes. Billed later for $184 which I found outrageously overpriced. I called twice to talk to someone about the bill, but I was told there was nothing I could do about it. I then talked to the manager who treated me rudely and asked "what the h*** is it worth to you then?" I then agreed to pay $92 and he hung up on me.

After 4 visits, the heater finally worked. My 27 year old son was home during all visits. Technician never spoke to me or my son about cost of repair. When bill came, it was about $1400.00 $400.00 for parts and $1000.00 for labor. I was shocked. Have not resolved bill yet. I suspect that the technician may have broken something on his first visit. Or perhaps he thinks it is OK to charge and charge and charge labor costs until he gets the repair right! Neither my son nor I believe he was straightforward about nature of repairs needed. Also, there is no way he did $1000.00 worth of labor. Even at $50.00/hour, that's 20 hours. No way. If he is charging labor for another individual to come and watch him, that is suspect.
Description of Work: I have used this company twice to work on air conditioner (my house is 6 years old). The same technician came both times. He was knowledgeable and bills were reasonable. On the most recent occasion, heating was not working. Another technician from the company came to look at unit and he said (to my son) that a part needed to be ordered (visit 1). No estimate was given. Technician returned (visit 2), spent a short period of time outside, came in the house, looked at thermostat unit in house then left. Minutes later heater was not working. Called company that evening on return home after work. Technician returned call and had me do a few things to thermostat. He said something other than what he told me must be the matter. Heater still did not work. Technician returned (visit 3). Spent a short time outside. Technician did not speak to my son before leaving. Heater still not working. Technician returned with another individual (visit 4). According to my son, the second individual just watched. Finally heater worked.
