"BEWARE - NOT LICENSED!! I hired Nick for a horse stall project because he installed a trailer hitch for me with no issues. I was told they were licensed contractors, they even advertise it on their page. Over a month later and the horse stall STILL isn't finished to the specifications they themselves set. It has no flashing to protect against water damage, no trim and the gate to the stall swings both ways so no way to keep it shut. Also if you look up, you can see light inside the stall coming through cracks! I would text both of them, no response sometimes for days, sometimes not at all. I would call, no response. I would be told he was coming out and he would never show. Be given excuses about projects he was doing. Finally Nick told me he would come out to finish and I asked if he could complete a whole other project we had discussed because it had been so long and I needed it done, electrical to the stall. He said it could be done, would even add water since he would already have an open trench. Paid money for materials for the new project to be done at the same time he would be finishing the stall. Again, would not give me an honest answer about timeline, became nasty telling me he had other customers who paid him larger sums of money for their projects and he could move me to the front of the line if I gave him a credit card, laughed at my frustration and concern. Stressed to him and Corrine I would no longer be needing their services for the electrical and water and I requested a refund of what I paid for the electrical/water project. They ignored me until I stressed to them I would be taking legal action if not refunded. They then stated to me they would return all but what I owed them for the stall which had NOTHING to do with the money I had paid for the electrical/water. I was current on the stall payments and my next one was not even due for another week! I am now seeking legal action. These two are frauds, not licensed and will take your money. All of the negative reviews online are true and I DON'T believe the positive ones are from actual customers. And I have found out since, this is not the first time legal action has been taken for the same thing. BEWARE!! STAY AWAY!!!! If they try to say anything to you about there are two sides to every story and use excuses as to what occurred, reach out to me, I have NO problem sharing screenshots!"

Carpentry services FAQs

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:

  • How long have you been in the woodworking industry?

  • What experience do you have with my type of project?

  • Do you have customer references I can speak with?

  • How long do you expect my project to take?

  • What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

  • Do you charge hourly or per project?

  • Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?

  • Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
