My husband and I bought a house with polybutylene pipe, unaware of all of the issues with it. As a result, over 10 years we have had several leaks spring up. Brian has always been very responsive, quick to schedule an appointment, very transparent about what needs to be done and the associated estimates, and his pricing is fair. Plus, he is just an all-around nice guy and good to work with. I would definitely recommend him.

Brian quickly went to task and provided an analysis for both issues. I told Brian I would need to consider his recommendation on replacing the toilet versus fixing its leak to which he replied I had wasted his time. When I tried to pay Brian he told me he was too busy to wait and repeated again that I had wasted his time. After researching his recommendation for replacing the toilet I agree it's the better option, as newer models are more efficient. While I truly value Brian's knowledge and skills-sets, his demeanor was intimidating which unnerved me.

I called to see if someone could help me with a problem I have been complaining to my husband and contractor about for months. When you open the cabinet under my kitchen sink, the smell knocks you back. After being told it was the garbage disposal, something l stored in the cabinet gone bad, just my imagination, even stench from my lousy cooking!?. I decided I was going to call someone that would help me. The gentleman I spoke with asked me a few questions and knew exactly what I was talking about!! He took the time to explain the situation and sat on the phone with me while I followed his instructions - even told me I could find a replacement part easily at Home Depot. He gave me referrals of companies that handle large septic issues if the situation didn't resolve with the fix he addressed over the phone. He didn't know me from Adam and tolerated my complete ignorance in describing the plumbing issue. Who does that now a days?!!! He could have could have come out here and charged me a fortune. What a decent guy!! I'd hug him if I could! :) Definitely someone I will call in the future because I am confident that he operates with integrity. (rare find)

Our sink under-counter plumbing was leaking. We had attempted to fix it with new washers, with no luck, so had to call out a plumber. Brian arrived on time, and easily fixed the leaky connections in the drainpipes. One of the problems he discovered was that the bottom threads of one of the drain holes in the actual sink had broken off. He replaced both of them (so they would match) and had the leaks fixed in no time. Unfortunately, when he ran water through to check for leaks, he discovered that the drain, itself, was clogged! He snaked it until it again ran clear. He was extremely efficient, and informative. He gave us advice on our prospective dishwasher purchase, as well as some tips about the bathroom remodel we are considering. What a very nice guy. Would definitely use him again.

Brian has been to my home before and he always does a great job! I called the night before and he made time in his busy schedule to fit me in the next day. He is conscientious, his prices are reasonable and always pleasant to talk to. I highly recommend him. .
Description of Work: Water line to washing machine was clogged and created a huge puddle in the kitchen. Brian cleaned the line and offered some tips for avoiding another clog. He also noticed the pipe leading to the gas water heater had come loose. He fixed that too. This is something I never would have noticed. I also asked that he check the gas line for an outdoor grill I no longer use. He checked it, turned it off and made sure I knew where the line is located.

I found wet area of carpet in 2 rooms of my upstairs and found water in the bottom of my 11 year old water heater. I emailed Brian late Wednesday and followed up with a phone call Thursday. I had an estimate for the water heater from a couple of months prior when I had previous work done by his company. He told me he may be able to fit me in later in the day but if not could definitely come the next day. He called at 4:30 and was at my house by 5:30 to do the install. He stayed till 8:30 to complete the job and even installed a water pressure restrictor. Exceptional customer service! We were thrilled to have hot water again. This was not an easy install. Up a large flight upstairs to be installed into a rather tight storage area. I only gave a good for the price b/c honestly I did not check around for a cheaper price. When we do home repairs we always look for a mix of price & good customer service. We have found the often when you go for the cheapest you are forsaking something else. Brian seems to be a good hardworking man and we were so pleased that we chose to have him do our plumbing work for us again. He could have upcharged us since it was somewhat of an emergency situation but b/c he didn't we gave him a tip. Again, good character & hard work make for an excellent business model.

Brian Long Plumbing is outstanding! Please read my entire comments as the first paragraph is problems I had with a different Angie's List service provider who contributed to the problems that Brian Long Plumbing corrected. It all started when I realized we had a very slow leak from a water pipe in a wall between our garage and an inside bedroom. My wife contacted another plumber that was highly rated on Angie's list to repair the leak. Upon arrival we were told the water heater needed to be removed to get at the leak. While the water heater was removed, we decided it was time to replace the old one (12-years) with a new, more efficient, version as the re-installation would be no different on either water heater. As far as I can tell, the pipe in the wall was repaired appropriately. However, the water heater was not. The first issue was that the original copper piping (right next to the flue) from the water heater was replaced with a white PVC type plastic tubing. Frankly, I would have preferred it to have been replaced with copper (as the original was) or at least given an option for me to consider. However, I'm not a plumber and accepted it was current code acceptable. Within a half an hour after the plumber left, the water heater started intermittently leaking from the pressure relief valve. Thinking it was water heater problem, I called Whirlpool who advised this was fairly common when a water heater is replace as the "thermal expansion tank must be calibrated with the incoming house water pressure". I didn't know if this was done so I contacted the plumber who advised he hadn't "and had never had to do that before". He came back that evening, said he had spoken to his supervisor, and was told he could relieve some pressure from the thermal expansion tank. When I asked if he knew how much he was removing he didn't know (didn't bring a gauge) and didn't know what the pressure was supposed to be. We thought we'd give it a try and see if it still leaked....which it continued to do. I checked on-line and calibrating the thermal expansion tank to the incoming water pressure requires an $8 water pressure gauge to measure the water pressure. I called the plumber and advised the water was still leaking from the pressure relief valve and could he come back and perform the calibration. When he arrived and measured the incoming water pressure it was 95 lbs. Apparently, it is supposed to be no higher than 75-80 lbs and the likely cause is failed pressure reduction valve. At that point I realized I have a bigger problem that may have caused the original pipe to spring a leak and may be causing the new water heater to intermittently leak and the pipes to squeal from time-to-time (which the first plumber clearly heard). The plumber didn't seem interested in investigating the root of the problem or finding out exactly what was needed nor did I want him to since he hadn't demonstrated proficiency with the water heater. Frankly, I would have expected a professional plumber to have done some preliminary testing/troubleshooting (i.e., what may have caused the pipe to leak). Based upon my frustration with the first plumber, I called Brian Long Plumbing the next day and we set up a time that his plumber, Tim, would arrive. Tim is fantastic! He identified the problem (a faulty pressure reduction valve) and gave me options and associated costs where it could be installed. In addition, he recognized an issue with the previous plumber's work by using PVC tubing (instead of copper) next to water heater vent where it might become brittle over time due to the heat and fail. Tim also mentioned that it was their normal practice to check the incoming water pressure before replacing a water heater and calibrating the thermal expansion tank was supposed to be done. Realizing I was finally working with a skilled and professional plumber, I asked to have a new hose bib installed on the side of my house. Tim performed all the work (replaced the pressure reduction valve, replaced the water heater piping with copper, installed a new thermal expansion tank, calibrated the pressure and installed the new hose bib) quickly, inexpensively and far superior to the previous plumber. What I've learned in life, and through this experience, is that repairs can be done is various ways. However, the folks I want working on my house should be knowledgeable, provide excellent service and do excellent work. Brian Long is my plumber going forward and I highly recommend you consider his company as well!

From the start, the company was very professional. My husband made the initial phone call and was able to schedule a convenient time to have the disposal replaced a few days later. The representative contacted me prior to arrival to let me know the exact time he would be there. He was friendly and professional. Upon inspection of the current disposal, he noticed some other leaks that we had with our under-sink plumbing (and yes, we knew they were there but were hoping that they would magically correct themselves). He replaced the disposal, replaced the leaking plumbing, and rerouted things a bit to provide better drainage for the dishwasher as well as provide me with more cabinet storage space. All-around fabulous experience.

The provider answered my call on the first try and set my appointment for the next day so he was very responsive. The provider called around 8:45 am the next morning and had his employee at my home by 9:30am... so they were punctual. Then the employee walked into the bathroom where the toliet was leaking from the bottom, and without even taking a close look told us that we really needed a brand new toilet. He just happened to have one out in the truck that it would be $485 with labor. Again, without even examining the toilet to determine what was causing the leak. When we said that was a lot of money, he then offered to take the toilet off the base to see what was really wrong for $185 plus additional labor costs and any parts that might be needed once he got it off. Then he proceeded down stairs to look at the 2nd toilet that was running too often that only needed the rubber flap replaced. He told us that all the mecanisims inside the back of the toilet needed to be replaced and that would be $200 with labor. Then he said the 2nd toilet also really needed to be replaced as well and that was another $485. He was nice enough to give us all of his "recommendations" in writing So if I went with his recommendations, a simple leak in one toilet and a running 2nd toilet would have cost me $970 minimum! After my wife called twice to tell me what was going on, I called Brian the owner and was probably rude to him but I can't stand companies or people who try to upsell right from the start without even looking into what's wrong. My wife was at home by herself during this visit so in my opnion this was clearly an attempt to take advantage of her being a woman and perhaps not knowing about plumbing. He did call me back and he did give us a refund of the $65 service call fee.
Description of Work: Provider had an employee come to my home to repair a toilet that was leaking from the base and to replace a rubber flapper in the back of a second toilet. They charged an up front $65 service fee just to come in the house.

Called in the morning and Brian indicated that they would be there in the afternoon (kind of vague) but did say they would call before they started to drive to my house. About an hour later they called and said they'd be at my door in ~20-30 minutes. When Tim showed up he know exactly what to do and let me know the flange was broken. He had one on his truck and in about 30 minutes he was done with the job. Can't ask for much more and I will use Brian Long Plumbing again whenever I have the need.

Excellent experience from beginning to end: Inspection, assessment, estimate, advice, scheduling, service, and post op review. This man runs an honest business and he and Tim do great work. I could not be more pleased as a 4 year owner of a 1400 sf Cape Cod built in 1947 that still had some of the original plumbing, and as someone who really was lucky to have it last this long. My slow leaks and plumbing issues were actually noticed by the Killo Pest Control inspector. Kudos to him as well. So I found Brian on Angie's List and had Tim out to access the problem. Turns out I had a leaky toilet, leaky tub, leaky capped pipes, bad configuration from kitchen sink and washer (which I was aware of and hadn't addressed yet - every washer load gurgled and backed up in the sink). Initially the price shocked me a little as I wasn't expecting that kind of cost. Tim was not pushy at all and said he would have Brian call me to discuss, which he did within an hour or so, and he was very up front and advised me to get a few more estimates before deciding, but regardless of who did the work, the best plan was to address everything at once instead of trying to 'patch' things, which would be a waste of money. And now the works done, it turns out he was right. I was very close to a flood in my kitchen, and I believe it because Brian showed me the degraded parts after the work was done and I'm very glad I listened. I did get other estimates, but nobody beat Brian's price. I scheduled the work a few days out and he and Tim and another guy came and did the whole job in one day, per his estimate. I gave them the keys to my house, went to work and when I got home, they had just finished testing the system and were packing up to go. And the cost was right on the money and they even replaced an extra piece of pipe that wasn't in the estimate for no additional cost to me, since they were already under the house and noticed it needed to be replaced. It's a great feeling to upgrade, and invest in, your home with confidence. This man will be my plumber as long as he is in business. Thanks again guys.
Description of Work: Total plumbing upgrade. Per invoice: Replaced waste and overflow in tub through to crawlspace. Cast from waste and overflow was replaced with PVC. Replaced leaking cast iron pipes from washing machine and kitchen sink in crawlspace. Replaced both strainers, waste pipe, and studor vent under kitchen sink. Re-set toilet, capped off two copper lines, replaced section of galvanized pipe at washing machine with pex as quoted.

Let me preface this by saying that I am a recently separated, single mom, who literally just signed paperwork to take over the mortgage to my 25 year old house. My ex always fixed everything around the house and I have never used a professional plumber, so I was quite anxious when my neighbor pointed out that I had a water leak in my yard. With that said, here was my experience: I spoke with Brian after being referred by the company he used to work for (they were booked). I explained that I had some type of leak in my yard next to my house. I told him that I had a different plumber come out to inspect the problem and that he had told me the blue indicator on my water meter was still spinning when he turned the main water off, but when that guy tried to explain his theory of what the issue was, it didn't make any sense to me, so I wanted someone else to look at it. Brian said it sounded like a water main issue and that he would send one of his men out to look at it for a $65.00 fee. I wasn't thrilled with that since the first plumber hadn't charged me anything to come look, but he said he would credit it back to me if I got the work done, so I was ok with that. The plumber came to my house, looked at the water heater, and then told me I would have to get a water expander mandated by the city when they replaced the water main. I asked him how much they cost approximately and he said he had no idea, and I would have to ask for the estimate to be itemized if I wanted that information. Then he started writing on his paper like he was done, and I said, "So...can you turn the main water off and go check to see if the blue dial is still spinning?" He said, "Sure, I'll double check if you want me to." Um, double check? Aren't you here to see what the problem is? So, when he did that the dial didn't move and he said it must not be the main water line then. I asked if he wanted to take a look to see where the leak is and once again this seemed like it didn't occur to him to do this. So after that, he said he was going to call Brian and get his advice. First of all, I'm not sure why he had to go outside to call him, and secondly, aren't you a plumber? Why are you having to call your boss and ask what you should do? So, after he gets off the phone with Brian, he comes back inside and tells me that it looks like it's probably a leak in a pipe under the slab and that they don't do that kind of work. What??? Then he tells me that will be $65.00. I told him that I was told it would be credited back to me if they did the work, but since they don't do the work, I didn't understand why I was being charged Brian knew very well I was on a slab because we talked about it on the phone. If there was even a possibility that it could be some type of issue that they don't do, he should have mentioned that in the call. So, I wrote the check out to the guy and gave it to him and then he left. I immediately started writing this review, but before I finished it, the plumber knocked on my door again. He said he talked with Brian who said since I was not satisfied, to just give me my money back. "Ok", I thought, "That's more professional and a good way to keep clients and get referrals". So I sat down and deleted this review. Well...a minute later I notice a voicemail on my phone. It was from Brian asking me to call him. I thought, "Wow...even after returning my money he's still following up to apologize for the situation and give me advice on who I should call next. What an amazing company!" Nope, I was wrong. He called to complain about giving me my money back. I told him how his plumber didn't even look to see what the issue was. I mean, were they going to dig up my yard, install a new water main, charge me, and then say, "Oh I guess that wasn't the problem"? I mean, really?? He blamed it on me saying that what I told him on the phone indicated a main water line issue and that sending someone out for troubleshooting vs an estimate were two different things. Then he told me how he pays his man $24/hr and that I just lost him money, that he was offended, and that we would not be doing business with each other in the future. He went on for like ten minutes ranting and raving. It was unreal. I have never in my life have a business return my money and then personally call me to complain about it. Even if he had said "Hey, since we can't do the work, I won't charge you the full price, but just 30 bucks to cover my guys expenses for coming out", I would have considered that reasonable and paid it without complaint. It was his choice to return the check to me. Why would you then call me to complain about it? What kind of business does that? How unprofessional.... Obviously, I will never, ever use this company again or recommend it to anyone.

Response from Water Heaters Gold Inc.
This is clearly a case of "don't shoot the messenger". When the lady called me about her issue, I spent 12 mins. on the phone with her answering numerous questions about her leak in the yard. She did tell me the house was on a slab and that when the main valve was cut off the leak detector on the meter was spinning. I said that indicates a leak in the yard between the meter and the house. I told her I would send Tim out shortly, and he would provide a written estimate to replace the line for $65.00. I explained to her how it would have to be inspected and there would have to be an expansion device on the water heater to pass inspection, but it was all included with the quote. She told me her mother was coming to town and could let the inspector in if we did the work the following week. I went over this with Tim and sent him out. Tim arrives and first looks at the water heater (which did need an expansion device) and he informed her of that. When you change a main water service, this is no big deal and is included in the price. All she had to do was let Tim (who has over 16 yrs. experience) DO HIS JOB! This was not the case though. She started getting all over his case about the cost of the expansion tank, and then was telling him that he hasn't checked the meter (over and over). This job was done in reverse because she was quite clear over the phone that the leak was in the yard diagnosed by another plumber, which is why Tim looked at the inside before measuring the line and checking the meter outside. When he did check the meter and determined the leak was under the slab, he informed her of this. When you have a leak under the slab, it has to be located. Only 10-15% of all the plumbing companies in Charlotte perform that service, so Tim recommended she call one of them. She was rude and nasty with Tim about paying the $65.00 (for the correct diagnosis mind you). Tim called and informed me of this, so I had him turn around and give her the check back. I called her shortly after and asked what the problem was since I went over everything in great detail before we went out. I'm the one ranting and raving for ten mins.? I could barely get a sentence finished, before she would snap at me that she had to tell Tim to check the meter, and "what was I going to do, rip out her water line that wasn't leaking?). When I have my computer guy come out, I don't stand over his shoulder while he's trying to work and nag "why don't you try hitting control-alt.-delete" over and over, I let him work, as I'm not well versed in computer repair. I did tell her that we wouldn't be doing any business in the future, as I don't have the time to deal with jaded and bitter individuals, who are looking to get out of paying their bill by initiating controversy. The only negative report she should have written, should've been about the "free mystery plumber" who gave her the wrong diagnosis. It's members like this that make me want to start an Andie's List and charge all the contractors to join, so we'll know "who not to work for". I'm an honest man and I run a honest business and I won't have my business practices or integrity question by no one, period!
