This was the 2nd maintenance visit of a 2-yr. contract. Always seems to be a hassle to get regular maintenance scheduled and then to get someone out here as scheduled. I'm told they send maintenance reminder cards, but I've yet to receive one. I took time off from work this morning to be here for the appointment. Service man was supposed to be here between 8-8:30 a.m. When he had not arrived or called by 8:50, I called to find out what was going on. The office told me he SHOULD be here. Well, DUH, that's why I called! He called me a few minutes later claiming his GPS couldn't find my address (my neighborhood is 15 years old). Makes one wonder what time he started looking and how long he was going to wait before calling for directions. He finally showed up at 9:20 a.m., a full 50 minutes late and now claiming that the office computer was down or slow or something. Guess he figured out the GPS excuse didn't hold water. Next he wanted to talk contract renewal. This was before he even asked where the furnace was! It should not be this difficult. The furnace and A/C are still kicking, so I'm hoping the quality of the actual maintenance is good. He did cover his shoes before coming in, which I always appreciate, and he was polite. Still, being 50 minutes late is a big deal to me.
Description of Work: Winter HVAC maintenance per 2 yr. maintenance contract.

Ross Witmer employees were wonderful to work with and scheduled us quickly. Turns out the heatpump was never properly installed and connected, messing up internal parts as well as engine. Plus, problems with the freon circulation. Essentially, we needed to replace the unit. After approx. 5 years of service and ongoing problems, this was devastating news. When our tech, Andrew, returned to his office, he talked with Carrier and discovered we were covered by a ten year warranty. The price for repair and installation changed to about 1/4-1/3 what we would have had to spend. Andrew called with the good news, ordered the parts from Carrier, and did the installation - in a very timely fashion. In addition, he installed a new thermostat (which had also been hooked up improperly). Andrew explained every aspect of the repair/replacement and what had occurred to cause the problems. He listened attentively to what we described, spent a long time checking out every detail of the system, b/f giving us a report. We were very pleased w/ the professionalism and skill he brought to the job. In addition, he spoke very highly of his coworkers, their proficiency and customer service skills. This speaks well of the company, overall. I would highly recommend anyone with a Carrier go directly to Ross Witmer for installation and any service work. We did not know what a mess we were getting in with going thru/ Sears and would never do that again. Ross Witmer has been in business a long time and knowing we have someone to call upon who cares about their reputation in the community is meaningful to us. We now have a service contract with Ross Witmer.
Description of Work: Ross Witmer was recommended to work on our Carrier heatpumps, installed in 2007 (dual zone). We have had continual problems with one unit, blowing out cool air in winter, making a grinding noise, and no a/c in the summer. We had purchased them thru/ Sears and every time we had a complaint and needed service, a different company was sent to do the work. We had the same part replaced three years in a row, while receiving assurances that "the problem was now fixed." This year (2012) once again, more problems with the A/C and then this Fall, problems with heat. We decided to spend the money on getting a proper diagnostic done from a company specializing in Carrier and it was worth every penny.

The electrical supervisor came to look over the job a week before the work began. He researched the acceptance of a fuse box when the new unit was inspected by the county. The technicians arrived on time, were professional, courteous, and hard working. They answered all my questions on the operation and maintenance of the new unit. I was able to get an additional duct outlet in my kitchen, which is very hot in the summer.

I could not have been more delighted with the service technician who came to my door, David Miller was very professional and even used cloth shoe protectors to enter my home. I was also impressed that he had his own personal business card. He spent time listening to my concerns and ran through the heating system very carefully. I could immediately sense that this company and it's service team acts with total honesty and integrity. You see, last year, the company who installed the system told me my next visit would cost me over $1,000.00 for a switch. I had not discussed that with David the Service Technician until he told me everything was working fine and everything was in order. You see, my home is under 5 years old and I should not have major repairs. I understand why the company that installed my system is no longer in business. However, a company like Ross and Witmer, Inc. is the kind of company that people need and depend on for honest service. I could not be more delighted. And, I have Mr. Miller's business card to hand out to my closest neighbors. We depend on each other for good advice. Ross and Witmer, Inc. will be my HVAC company and I will not hesitate to recommend them to everyone I know!
Description of Work: I heard about this company from a friend. My friend has had them servicing their HVAC for a few years now, and they heard about them through a friend! My home is newer and has a heat pump/gas unit, built in 2005 by Pulte. I was concerned about the unit and performance. So, when I called the service department, they suggested the service and maintenance contract, giving me 1 year coverage.

Hugh and Jonathan from Ross and Witmer showed up even a bit early and were amiable, very courteous, and extremely professional. They removed the entire front of the plenum and the old evaporator unit and replaced it with one that was much larger, as big as could be fit into the existing plenum. They replaced the front of the plenum with a factory front and performed sheet metal work to make it a beautiful fit. They did a very neat, excellent job and added insulation to the front of the plenum. The job took about 3 1/2 hours. The guys even rerouted the condensate line for better drainage. Kudos to them!
Description of Work: I called Ross and Witmer to check our AC system since it seemed to be struggling and I wanted them to check the refrigerant level, etc. He ascertained that there was an unwanted pressure drop in the lines, probably a partial obstruction at the expansion piston and probably due to debris in the line, like solder, which occurred when the previous owner had the compressor/condensor unit replaced and the HVAC contractor did not install a filter-drier in the line which would have trapped the debris. (ONE OF THESE SHOULD BE IN THE LINE, AND IT SHOULD BE REPLACED IF THE SYSTEM IS OPENED, ETC.) Ross and Witmer's estimator, Kirby Overby, gave me an estimate for just pumping down the system, cleaning out the obstruction, reassembling with a filter-drier, and recharging the refrigerant of about $500. But when our outside AC compressor was replaced by the previous owner, they did not upgrade the system with a matching evaporator, but, instead, left original unit installed in the plenum chamber. So I asked Kirby to give me a price for replacing that with a new modern evaporator, one that ran on the old R12 refrigerant, but could be converted to run on the current coolant. This would mean that I would not have to replace the evaporator, if and when the compressor had to be replaced in the future with one that MUST run on the new coolant. This took a couple of days since there are a number of options as to size, brand, model, etc. I opted to replace the evaporator unit in the plenum chamber.

Ross and Witmer installed a new HVAC system in 3/06. A few months later, the A/C didn't work. After a bit of troubleshooting, they replaced the wire from the system to the thermostat which resolved the issue. When the new system was installed in 3/06, the existing wiring to the thermostat was used. They returned for maintenance in 10/06 with out any issues. Ross and Witmer was scheduled to return for the second routine maintenance in 4/07. After waiting 1 1/2 hours of the appointed 2 hour range for the technician to arrive, I called the company to discover that my appointment had fallen through the cracks. They apologized and sent over the next available technician. During the maintenance, they discovered a leak in the refrigerant and oil of the heat pump. They sent another technician over to correct the issue. I called the field supervisor the next day and he said the leak may have been the result of a bad solder joint and offered to send someone to check the unit again in one month.
Description of Work: Follow up work on HVAC system installed 3/06; routine maintenance on HVAC. There has been no charge for the work as it was either included in the warranty or part of the one year free maintenance given with the new system to Angie's List subscribers.

Everything went very well. The quote was delivered quickly by Kirby Overcash and I never felt as if he was trying to sell us more than we needed. The price that I got was slightly lower than two others quotes that I received and the specifications on the units were the same, if not a little better. The installation team was on-time, courteous, and QUICK! They told me it would take as long as one and a half days, but they were done and out of the house by 2 pm on the first day. The experience was very good.

I absolutely could not get over how pleasant ALL of the people from Ross and Witmer were, and how great is was to work with them. From the initial svc tech and the supervisor, he called in to analyze our problem, Kirby Overby who came over for the estimate (which they stuck to) and the two service technicians who later did the work, Rick and Dwayne! We ran into a slight wrinkle when a mismeasurement resulted in the just-fabricated duct not fitting. (There was a change in size and offsets to contend with) They called in a supervisor (another Rick), and since it was already too late to fabricate and install a new duct section, rigged the system to work OK without the duct section overnight. As promised, they were back bright and early and installed the new section without a hitch. Rick and Dwayne were happy to show me what they were doing as work progressed and at the end. They were sharp guys and just super duper to work with. They even volunteered to clean the coils of our condensor.
Description of Work: On a previous svc visit, the Ross & Witmer tech & supervisor concluded that the problems we were having were the result of a section return air duct next to the furnace (installed for the previous owner) that was way too small, choking the air flow and creating freezup problems. (It was half the minimum cross- sectional area it should have been) When I also tried to use a more effective air filter for my allergies, it choked the flow even more & made the problem worse. The solution as a new, properly sized section of duct. In discussing this with a service supervisor, I also felt an EAC, Electronic Air Filter would help my allergies while not impeding air flow much. They made it clear that the EAC had to be installed 1st, then measurements taken, return to the shop to fabricate the duct, & then return a couple of hrs later to install it. The two svc techs, Rick and Dwayne, performed the job very well. Ductwork was about $400 & the rest was for the EAC.

I called Ross and Witmer on a Sunday, after the company I had used previously, failed to respond. Charlie, the technician that responded to my page, was very nice and informed me of the prices for weekend work vs. weekday. He said that if I could wait, I should because it would be better for me from a cost standpoint. He offered to submit my name first thing in the moring and to have someone call me, which they did. Ross and Witmer had a technician to my house within 2 hours. He quickly diagnosed the problem, and replaced the motor within a short time period. He was polite, and very helpful, providing additional information about my system.

NOTHING GOOD TO SAY. LEFT ME HANGING FOR WEEKS AT A TIME AT SEVERAL POINTS IN THE JOB. DID AN OBVIOUSLY BAD JOB (WIRED ALL THERMOSTATS TO THE WRONG ZONES- TWICE! DUCTS LEAK, CONDENSATE POOLS ON FLOOR UNDER A/C UNIT, ETC). REFUSED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEMS, TRIED TO BILL ME EXTRA TO FIX THEIR MISTAKES, OR PUT IN FIXES THAT WERE JUST AS BAD. BILLED ME BEFORE IT WAS EVEN INSPECTED (FAILED INSPECTION, OF COURSE), and BEFORE SYSTEM WORKED RIGHT. GUY WHO SOLD SYSTEM TO ME HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH INSTALLATION OR OVERSEEING JOB, JUST CAME BACK TO THREATEN ME WHEN I COMPLAINED ABOUT THE QUALITY. BROUGHT A LOT OF PEOPLE TO THE JOB SITE WHO DIDN'T SEEM TO DO ANY WORK, and WHOLE CREW MORE INTERESTED IN PICNICKING ON THE LAWN and PLAYING WITH MY KIDS' TOYS (NO KIDDING) THAN WITH GETTING THE JOB DONE. DRILLED HOLES THROUGH MY WOOD FLOOR (DIDN'T FIX). DIDN'T REMOVE ALL OLD DUCTS (THOUGH THEY KNOW DUCTS ARE MOLDY and MY KID ALLERGIC TO IT, TOLD ME TO JUST COVER IT UP). JUST BAD, and BAD ATTITUDE.

Response from Ross & Witmer
We will not respond in great detail since this customer has been turned over to our company attorney. Botton line is, we more than you can count on two hands, responded to their concerns each time leaving it with their supposed satisfaction. It got to the final breaking point where we realized it would not be possible to satisfy them. The allegations in the report are false. The only points of contention were the balancing which we responded and resolved. (that is common in an old house, sometimes it just takes some tweaking) The other was a pilot hole that was a little off the mark, it was only a 1/4 inch whole and since they indicated that they were having someone already doing hardwood floor work, we suggested and they agreed to have them repair the hole. We mentioned either having the floor guy call us to pay the bill or customer could deduct off our contract, which ever worked easiest to the customer and they agreed. If you want to truly find out how difficult this customer is, just take time to read their other reports for work they had done. In life sometimes you deal with customers that can't be satisfied. Overall I was pleased however the company had just made a trip to my house several days earlier because we couldn't get the timers to work correctly on our 4-zone system. I thought it was odd that the person who came for that job didn't notice there was something wrong with the anti-cycling timer that went bad several days later. I questioned the technician and he said the timer's either work or they don't. You can't determine the wear on them by inspection. Cost of the diagnostics was $101 + Gas Surcharge $9 + $102 for the parts. Seemed like the diagnostic fee should be lower.

Favorable experience attributed to size and experience of the company. Salesperson was readily available, on time and knowledgeable. Size of installation crew (which consisted of 4 full time members plus part time electrician and supervisor) allowed for job to be finished in a timely manner (1.5 days). Installation crew was on time, courteous and respectful of homeowners property. Price was lowest for the Carrier equipment selected of the three estimates obtained (Andersen was highest; ARS was middle) but decision to select Ross and Witmer was not made only on pricing.

AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH WITHIN OUR OFFICE I CAME TO FIND OUT THAT THIS CUSTOMER COULD NEVER QUITE UNDERSTAND WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO EXPLAIN. IT'S PRETTY VISIBLE WITHIN THE CONTENTS OF THEIR RESPONSE THAT IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, AND THAT THERE IS DEFINITELY CONFUSION. THEY ARE APPARENTLY MIXING UP AN INDOOR COIL FREEZE UP WITH FAN OPERATION. IF THE INDOOR COIL IS FROZEN, AIR WILL NOT PASS ACCROSS, GIVING YOU THE IMPRESSION THE FAN ISN'T WORKING BECAUSE NO AIR IS COMING OUT OF THE REGISTERS. THE FACT THAT WE OFFERED A PREVENTATIVE SERVICE AGREEMENT BEFORE WE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM ISN'T OUT OF LINE, WE FEEL THAT IT IS IMPORTANT REGARDLESS IF EQUIPMENT HAS A PROBLEM OR NOT. PLUS, IF A REPAIR IS OR WAS NEEDED, WE WILL GIVE A INSTANT DISCOUNT. ALSO ASKING ABOUT THE FILTER GIVES US GOOD FEEDBACK AS TO HOW OFTEN WE CAN RECOMMEND THAT IT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. IN REGARDS TO NOT GETTING A CALL BACK ,I HONESTLY COULD NEVER GET A DEFINITE OF WHAT HAPPENED, BUT WE STRIVE TO HAVE THE BEST COMMUNICATION TO OUR CUSTOMERS.
