+ -1 moreI'm very happy to have my email restored almost immediately. Mike is incredibly knowledgeable about computers and has consistently helped me - most of the time it was on the same day. His IT background is very impressive. I've recommended to quite a few people and they are as pleased with his professionalism as I am.
Description of Work: Mike has been taking care of all my computer needs for several years...helping me get new computers, installing new software, fixing lots of minor issues that computers like to have. Last week, I had a not so minor issue. My email completely shut down. It was late at night. I texted him to please help the next day. However, he immediately responded and fixed the problem offsite right away.

Mom is very happy! He customized her settings, email, printer etc and even helped with her i-phone! Mike was terrific and we will definitely use him again if (when?) the need arises!

+ -1 moreMike cam e to our house and did a great job giving my ~5 year old computer a tuneup, cleaning up some ugly malware that I could not get rid of with the programs I had tried. The computer had been used quite a bit by the kids etc and needed help. He made recommendations on how to keep it cleaned up and offered to help if I had any problems in the next month. He was very competent and friendly. I'll call him in the future next time I need computer help.

+ -1 moreMike was on the phone with me for an hour discussing the pros and cons of different new computers as well as monitors. I purchased the HP Black Envy 700-410. HP Envy, monitor and the HP Envy printer. On 2/2/2015, Mike came to my home and set up the entire new system. This included transferring Everything from my old computer to the new one. It took about 4 hours. He was so patient and cared about getting everything perfect. He succeeded. Naturally, within a week I had messed something up by clicking on the wrong thing. Mike guided me through to uncheck a box that fixed the problem.:) Yesterday, I tried to open an old folder that had transferred over with my other mail and the file was corrupted and stopped my mail from working. I called Mike. He spent an hour on my computer, by remote access, tracing and repairing the problem. Mike is an awesome technician and I am very thankful to have found him on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Advised me, by phone, to purchase a new computer rather than pay him for repairing my 8 year old and Failing computer. Set up entire system when it arrived.

+ -1 moreI gave him a call since his Angie's List write-up offered free consultation. Mike answered my call and asked if he could call me right back. He called back in less than 5 minutes. We discussed my situation and he offered me some general advice and when I told him which (on sale) unit I was considering, he said that would be a good choice and one that he would recommend. I'm typing this review on my new computer and can tell you that once this laptop starts slowing down or having other issues I will call Mike to get him to work on it. Thanks Mike!
Description of Work: I have been experiencing a slowdown of my 4 year old laptop and was battling pop-ups so I searched Angie's list for help. Not A Geek caught my eye and his record looked stellar so I wrote down his contact info to give him a call when I had time to work with him on the issues. In the meantime the hard drive went out on my laptop so I ran it back to the Best Buy store where I purchased it. After considering the cost of replacing the HD and recovering my data versus a new laptop with the data recovered, I started shopping for a new one. Uncertain of which one was the best choice for my needs I remembered Mike at Not A Geek.

+ -1 moreCPI Security came to my house and worked on our security system. The service man had to install a security code into my router but failed to advise me that this would screw up my wireless printer. Once he left, my printer failed to respond to the computer.. I did not realize that the code he installed into the router had to be installed into the printer as well. Mike, from his house, logged into computer, uninstalled the printer, worked for an hour trying to discover the problem until he entered my router and discovered the access code CPI installed. Once he discovered this, he reinstalled the printer and all is working well now. Like I said before, this guy is terrific!!

He was able to come out right away, spent some time trying to get our information off the computer before it crashed; however, the hacker had encrypted all our programs so there was nothing that could be done. Mike spent some time showing me different computers and the specifications that would fit our needs, which I found very helpful. I would definitely contact him again.

+ -1 moreI had two printer programs on my laptop that I could not delete. There was also an issue with the laptop itself that was not clear to me exactly what was wrong. Mike spent considerable time attempting to diagnose the printer problems. He found that there were several documents in Que in both printers. Most were easily removed but two were not so easy. He fixed the problem (not without some difficulty) and also fixed the issue with the laptop itself. I can not say enough good things about Mike. He continues to amaze me with his knowledge and "gut feeling" about certain problems. I never fail to present him with more exciting, never before seen issues!!

+ -1 moreOn visit earlier this year he set up my computer and on second visit he was able to get my computer back on line, which I had been unable to do after some phone line/new telephone problems. He also answered questions about new computer and we discussed my purchasing a printer in near future. Both appointments went well and accomplished appointment objectives. I hope to purchase a new printer soon and will be calling him for suggestions/recommendations and for installation after purchase. Though I do not remember the cost of the two appointments, I know he charged $75/hour.
Description of Work: I originally contacted Mike earlier this year and talked to him about purchasing a laptop, for which he made suggestions/recommendations. After obtaining the new computer, Mike set it up and then was called again this summer when I was unable to connect to internet via wireless router he had installed. On initial visit he installed software on my new computer and transferred files from old computer. On second visit he was able to get my new computer connected to internet again.

+ -1 moreMike is extremely responsive, knowledgeable and prompt. In my opinion, his fast and reliable service was worth a slight premium and he wasn't finished until I was satisfied. I would highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Mike was able to put all of my files back in order after a system upgrade appeared to delete everything. Then about a month later, my computer went through some physical trauma completely separate from my first issue. Mike installed a new hard drive and worked through Carbonite to restore everything for a 2nd time. Both times, he has had me up and working within 24-48 hours. Now my 2 year old computer is good as new.

Description of Work: Mike helped me select a new laptop to replace my aging one. He shopped around for best price, ordered it, brought it to me, transferred everything from the old laptop, installed any new needed software, gave me a basic tutorial, answered all of my ill-informed questions. I've been using Mike for over 5 years. This is the second laptop he has procured for me, and the first one was great. He made no assumptions about what solution I should pursue, but at every decision point, gave me information and choices when they existed. I was very grateful that he took my very untechnical way of describing my computer problems and understood them. If I ever have computer problems again, I would not hesitate to contact Mike at Not a Geek.
Description of Work: Mike listened to my description of my computer problems. He checked out all that was possible, and when that didn't seem to work, he tested the computer, using various instruments. As he did this, he explained what he was checking. After some time of this troubleshooting, he determined that either the hard drive or the motherboard was the problem. He took the computer and 2 external hard drives home with him to check which was the culprit. By this time he had ascertained that there was no way to fix my computer. I needed a new one. I agreed with his offer to purchase a new computer, and load my information from the old hard drive on the new one. He made this purchase, and after determining that he could salvage the contents of the old hard drive, he loaded that on the new one. The next morning, he brought the new computer with the contents from the old one back to me.

Description of Work: My Outlook email account ceased to work this past weekend. After performing all my internet provider's email troubleshooting functions, none of which worked, I contacted my internet provider and their technician told me my Outlook email account was corrupt. I set up a new Outlook account but couldn't get my Address Book, files and folders transferred from old account to new account. From Angie's list, I decided to hire Mike Grabowski since he had excellent reviews and my home was in his service area. Mike was prompt and efficient in all aspects. Within minutes, Mike found that my original Outlook program had no corruption and that the technician had not only diagnosed my problem but had misinformed me on most everything. I'm not an expert but had expected my service provider's technician to be one. Mike informed me that my service provider had been experiencing e-mail server issues in my area last weekend. I had uninterrupted internet service so when technician told me it was my Outlook program that was corrupted, I thought he knew what he was talking about so I believed him. It took Mike less than 15 minutes to find, correct and restore my program back to normal. He asked if there was anything else I was experiencing problems with since there was approx. 45 mins left on his hourly charge. I was having problems with my printer not properly communicating with my computer so had him look into that. Bottom line, I learned I have a faulty printer. The reason I am including this in my review is that Mike could just as easily have charged me his hourly rate and left after the repair I contracted him for but he didn't. He offered me a full hour of service and IMO, this is the mark of a professional I would use again and most definitely recommend to others.

He suggested we replace our router. We did so and he set up all our wireless devices. Mike is punctual and called before coming. Mike is very personable.

He is very neat and organized and asked me questions to better remedy my problems. Mike made this a painless experience and I would highly recommend him. I don't want just anybody dabbling in my computer. He is a true professional....and he is NOT A GEEK.
Description of Work: He cleaned up a lot of little things that I tend to screw up and updates that need attention over time. He knew exactly what to do and made helpful suggestions on how to make my computer work more efficiently. It works noticeably faster now.

Ultimately, he advised against fixing it which I appreciate in a certain circumstance. He told me what to look out for and what to look for when getting a new one. Mike took the time to go over different ways of correcting my problem until we were able to achieve a solution. He didn't have to take this much time on what many would view as a minor problem, but he chose to continue searching for a solution and found one!! Thanks again Mike.

He gave me advice on using a smaller hard drive to replace the existing one, which saved me $$$'s and still left me with 75%+ room on my drive. Without asking he defragged the drive. Very reasonable!!!! Would absolutely use Mike again!
