Description of Work: My cursor on my laptop was moving all over the screen without being directed to do so. Not-a-geek gave me several possible solutions and ultimately he suggested that I download the touchpad driver. The suggestion worked and there was no request for a payment.

Description of Work: He was supposed to set up my Microsoft outlook. He was not able to get it to connect and he had to call his IT department three times to try and get my outlook working. I wanted him to get my outlook live running but he wasn’t able to do that and spent an hour trying. When he first got here he wasn’t even sure that he would be able to help me.

I informed the customer up front that we have no control over what Microsoft does and there may not be a happy solution here. She was using Windows Live Mail 2012 which is being discontinued and did not want to purchase MS Office or upgrade to Windows 10. The only other option was switching to the online version of [hyperlink removed], which she was also unhappy with. I have no “IT Department”, but did spend an inordinate amount of time getting her passwords reset as the ones I was given wouldn’t work. I was there a little over an hour; only charged for an hour; and wound up refunding half her money prior to this review.

We talked for about 5 minutes. Mike knew specific questions to ask that quickly got to the probably causes of the problem. I probably won't get the box fixed because it's about 4-years old, but I'm _very_ impressed that 1.) a real person answered the phone on a Sunday afternoon. 2.) he provided sound advice that basically said "You can spend money to fix the PC but it might not be worth it." and 3.) he provided the name of a company that can help if I want to pursue a fix.
Description of Work: Called on a Sunday afternoon to get information about the services the company provides. I expected to leave a message but Mike answered the phone! I explained that I had a dead computer, and he asked questions and advised me how to proceed.

My husband met Mike through a networking group so I called him and he said he would try his best to fix my problem over the phone at no charge. We eventually decided he needed to see my computer in person and was there in just a couple hours. He did several diagnostics and while we weren't able to pinpoint exactly what went wrong, he ended up restoring my computer to a point earlier in the week, which fixed the problem. He also gave me numerous tips about how to keep my computer in shape and ways to backup. I followed his advice, bought an external hard drive and he spent time with me on the phone (at no charge) going step by step with me in creating a backup system that works for me. He's also answered several emails (also at no charge) whenever I've had a problem or question. He's great to work with and even though I've only paid him for 2 hours of work, he's spent at least that amount for free answering questions and giving me tips. I'd recommend him to anyone!
Description of Work: My computer was on the fritz and Mike tried diagnosing my problem over the phone for free but when we couldn't identify the problem, he came to my home and spent approx 2 hours fixing it, saving me many gray hairs as I thought my computer had crashed (with no backup system in place)!

When Mike came to our home to diagnose the problem, he could not fix it on site, but rather had to return it to his office for further work. We were without the computer for no more than 48 hours, and when Mike returned, he set it up and had it working perfectly. Mike was very knowledgeable and acted very professionally.
Description of Work: Mike was able to jump start the Windows XP operating system on one of our desktops, which had not previously been working. He was also able to gain access to the internet, add anti-spyware and anti-virus programs, and bring the operating system up to date.

I have used Mike on several occasions and have found him to be both professional and a pleasure to work with. He is knowledgeable, responsive and very easy to communicate with. He always explains (in understandable terms!) what is going on and what he is doing. Also very reasonably priced relative to other services that I have used.
Description of Work: Mike diagnosed and repaired a laptop that was not functioning properly with home wireless system. Also cleaned up and adjusted two desktops that were not functioning properly due to an outside communications tower that was interfering with the wireless signal.

I am delighted with the new computer and am so glad he advised me to upgrade to a 22" monitor. He saved me about $200 in service fees that the store recommended. He was able to accomplish the same thing for a lot less. He also knew where to buy everything for the least amount of money. I am not computer literate, but his instructions were easy to understand and I can now do a lot things myself that I could never do before. I plan to have him come back and give me some more lessons.
Description of Work: My old computer was running extremely slow, so I called Mike to diagnose the problem and tune up the machine. He was ready to do so, but advised me that it would be more cost effective to purchase a new computer at this point. I asked for his assistance in selecting and setting up a new machine. He accompanied me when I made the purchase and helped me to pick a computer, a monitor, a printer, and software based on my requirements and within my budget. He installed and set it up in my office, and gave me a quick overview on Window Vista and how it was different from my old system. He transferred all my documents to the new computer, and set up the music library for my iPod. I had him come back a second time to show me how to upload, email, and print my digital pictures.

Mike was able to come the day after I called and arrived promptly at the scheduled time. Very pleasant to work with and very good at explaining what he was doing and making sure I understood all that he was doing. Everything went well just as planned. He was very efficient with his time. I have used another Angie's List computer repair company before on several occasions but will easily choose Mike first the next time a need arises.
Description of Work: Connected new printer to wireless home network (3 desktops and 1 laptop). Set up each computer to communicate with each other computer and print. Also restored one of the desktops that would go to a blue screen soon after booting.

I was delighted to have my problem diagnosed and solved over the phone. They did not charge me for the call, so my only expense was for a new router which I got on sale for $50. Had I used any of the other companies, I would have had to pay for a service call. Not a Geek told me to call anytime I needed advice, and I would only be charged for any service they performed.
Description of Work: My wireless laptop from work could no longer access the Internet at my house. My desktop worked fine. I had the machine checked by the IT department. They found nothing wrong and told me to have the connections checked out at home. I called several places for quotes. They all gave me hourly rates and wanted to send out a technician. When I called Not A Geek, I spoke directly to a technician. He asked me a bunch of questions, then told me to go out and replace my Linksys wireless router and to call back if that didn't solve the problem. Everything works great now.

Once Mike got involved it went very well. He handled all the communications with Dell and saved me from having to buy a new hard drive or a new computer. I was up and running in three business days. The only delay was due to Dell. After the work was finished, my computer was exactly the same as before the problem began.
Description of Work: My Dell Inspiron Laptop was acting flaky. It would hang up on Outlook email, was unable to access the Internet, gave error messages on startup, and prompted to end programs on shutdown. After shutting down, a blue screen with error codes would appear. I have a service contract with Dell and they couldn t help me. I spoke to some Indian who made it worse. So I called Not A Geek. Mike determined that the hard drive was defective. He worked with Dell and had them ship a new hard drive under their warranty. He installed the hard drive and rebuilt my system. He also backed up and restored all my data so I didn't lose anything. That included my emails, contacts, and lots of digital photos and music for my iPod.

It went very well. Mike responded to my call immediately, found the best deal on a new computer, and stayed late that evening to make sure I was completely functional. He helped me check my online accounts to make sure they were secure and to change all my passwords. He also worked with me to protect any confidential information on my new computer from falling into the wrong hands. My computer is crucial for my work and his rapid response was a lifesaver.

Everything went very smoothly. We had spoken on the phone prior to the appointment, so he was well prepared and had all the necessary equipment with him when he arrived. I particularly enjoyed his tutoring. I am not very computer literate, and found him very easy to understand.
Description of Work: I bought a new computer that came is Vista. My old computer had Windows XP. Mike transferred my documents, address book, digital photos, and music to the new machine. He also set up my email, Internet Favorites, and reinstalled all my programs. My new computer is a laptop, and Mike installed equipment for wireless Internet access. Then he gave me a brief lesson on Vista, so I was able to do the same things I could on my old computer.

It went very well. Considerable time and effort was required, but the fee was capped at $300. Please note that I previously had another technician work on the problem who failed to solve it, but billed me anyway. Mr. Grabowski guaranteed a solution and did not bill until the problem was completely resolved to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: I had problems with Internet Access and print sharing on a wireless network in my office. Mr. Grabowski diagnosed and fixed the problem. The wireless router was defective and had to be replaced. Mr. Grabowski installed and configured a new one and that problem was solved. Resolving the print sharing issue required considerable research on his part for which I was not charged. He came up with procedures to define both printers on every PC in the office. Now, I have 7+ employees using the Internet and sharing two printers on a wireless print server.
