Kevin came over and immediately had a vision of my space that greatly exceeded the competing landscape companies. He listened to my thoughts and with that came up with a design that i was hoping for, and then surpassed it. These guys did a lot of hard work. The crew chief, Andy, was on top of everything. He and his guys worked efficiently and with integrity. What's going on underneath the ground is just as important as the shrubs and trees that rest above it. Thankfully this company addressed that with an impressive french drain system. I am now worry free about soil saturation or foundation deterioration. The tree, plant and flower combinations all work great together allowing a nice balance of both color and texture throughout the entire space. The end result is fantastic and I cannot wait until Spring !
Description of Work: Installed 140 ft. of french drain and accompanying river rock dry creek, removed massive amounts of debris from property, transplanted and planted multiple trees/shrubs: planted japanese maple trees, viburnums, lorepetulums, roses, abelias, hydrangeas, hostas,gardenias, camelias, ferns, pansies,fixed landscape lighting, installed a fountain, stepping stones, placed and filled pots, pine needles, mulch.

+ 0 moreI have to say this is one of the BEST customer service experiences I have ever had. Kevin came out and gave advice and gave us a plan. We ended up having a mis-communication and I called him after the first day's work was complete. He immediately stopped what he was doing and came over to see what the issue was and then promised to resolve it and did, insisting that we were 100% happy with his work, and we are!! His crew is fantastic. I had asked them to move one fruit tree which was where the new patio would be installed. When I got home from work, the crew had noticed my feeble attempts to move a few other bushes and THEY HAD MOVED THEM FOR ME without being asked!!!! The crew was super nice and did a great job. Kevin is very responsive, always available, and gives great advice. If you are looking for a quality and great service and not the cheapest (but certainly worth his price), I wouldn't recommend anyone else.
Description of Work: We hired Kevin to remove an old deck and replace it with a paverstone patio. Kevin won me from the first phone call. He was very confident and knowledgeable. He told me what to look for and why I didn't want the patio I thought I wanted (and he was right). He came over and marked off what he thought would look best. He also moved some fruit trees that were important to me.

+ -1 moreUnlike any other landscaper I called, he called back promptly, visited our site, and gave us a prompt and complete estimate. We were under some time pressure to get the job done. He also recommended we have the soil tilled with a soil amendment, which was very appropriate in the circumstances (new construction), and recommended the correct mulch for our situation. I was quite impressed and would have used his services, save that he was slightly more expensive than the landscaper we did use. We will definitely call him back again to discuss future work after construction on the house next to us is complete, and we can safely install plants. Based upon our experience, he is certainly a cut above most landscapers when it comes to professionalism, and we would have liked to have hired him.

+ -1 moreCalled 3 different landscapers, two of which were on Angie's list, for an estimate to remove old retaining wall and install a new one. The wall was "structural" along side of the house with a fairly steep slope, and was used to level the ground for the air conditioner pads. Kevin's quote was the competivie, and he stated that they would do a full cleanup after and make sure that all drainage was appropriate for the site. Due to his work schedule he told us it would take 6-8 weeks until they could start on the job, but they were able to start a little sooner. Communications through emails worked well.They finished the job very quickly, excellent results, great clean-up and even spread some pine straw (not incuded in the original estimate) to give the overall job a very professional/finished look.
Description of Work: Removal of old railroad tie retaining wall, install keystone/concrete block retaining wall with all appropriate drainage.

Description of Work: I had a new "Hosta" garden installed along with several new plants along my patio that was also built by Kevin James Landscaping. Plants included two 7-gal Common Camellias, three 3-gal Endless Summer Hydrangeas, three 1-gal Holly Ferns, a "lot" of Mondo Grass and ten large stepping stones installed from my new patio to the wooded areas. I had all my planted areas "mulched" -- a FULL dump truck of mulch! My water pot in one small garden was cleaned and started for the spring/summer season. I have used Kevin James Landscaping multiple times -- probably 9-10 times. My landscaping receives many compliments from virtually all visitors ... and even from folks who only see the photos. I've had retaining walls installed, lots of plants, a water pot gar dent etc. The patio replaced an old brick patio with pavers ... included walls along some sides to provide seating and aesthetics. All brick sidewalks leading to that patio were replaced with pavers. Kevin James Landscape workers are extremely courteous and some of the hardest 'workers' I've ever seen. Andy normally heads up the projects I have and works right along with the others. He will listen as well as make suggestions as work progresses. I doubt you'll find a harder working group of landscapers. You will likely balk at the price ... but trust me, the results will be worth every penny and more. I recommend Kevin James Landscaping without reservation.

+ -1 moreWhen Kevin first came out to access the job he told confirmed what I thought that a french drain needed to be dug out to redirect the water from the garage. He suggested digging a hole in a section of the asphalt and running a drainage pipe our into the lawn on the other side. When he came to do the job he said that he also wanted to include another area for the french drain because after he thought about it he thought this area could also be causing a problem and didn't want it to be a problem so he also added this area with an additional french drain and did not charge me anything more for the additional work. He was prompt. His workers got right to work upon arrival and finished the same day. They were all very polite and worked hard the whole day. They were also communicative about what they were going to do and how it was going to work. It poured rain last night. I went into the garage this morning and it was dry as a bone. It really tested the drain last night with the amount of water that was coming down and proved that the drain really worked. I would definitely recommend them.
Description of Work: Dug french drains around a area above the garage that cause water to drain into the garage when it rained. Connected pipes along with gutter downspout. Cut a section our of the asphalt driveway and buried a drainage pipe that opened up on the other side of the garage.

+ 4 moreKevin came in March to talk through what we wanted. Our garden is exceptionally wet due to it being sloped & having poor drainage. The patio was too small & a large flower bed adjacent to the patio meant we were attacked by bugs as soon as we sat outside. My two dogs had created their own mud path up to our side gate & my children were desperate to have their trampoline back up in the garden. Kevin came up with some great suggestions & he marked out the options with spray chalk. That really helped to visualize size & shape. He provided us with an estimate the same evening. Once we had talked everything through Kevin came back & we made adjustments, adding lighting & removal of trees. Again the estimate was back with us the same day. We asked Kevin to start as soon as he could. Kevin booked a date in & his team arrived that morning & got straight to work. They were a fabulous & we quickly saw the garden changing. Andy, the supervisor, was excellent. He took his time to discuss things with us & was happy to accommodate changes as the project evolved. The team were with us about 10 days. We are so pleased with our new garden & everything has taken really well including all the new turf.
Description of Work: We had the patio area increased, a block paver path added, a decorative wall added with concealed lighting, a circular area leveled off with a decorative retaining wall, new trees & shrubs & various other landscape changes including re-turfing & pine straw.

+ 1 moreI can't say enough positive things about Kevin, Andy and the entire crew. They are true professionals and so great to work with. Because of our experience with Kevin and his team a few years ago (redesigned our front yard landscaping and installed a new retaining wall) Kevin was the first and only call we made when we decided it was time to deal with some issues in our backyard. Our large old and once-beautiful Leyland Cypress trees were dying and it was time for a new solution. We also had an overgrown and hard to manage bed filled with Loripe (& weeds!) running the entire length and end of our pool deck. Kevin came out to the house and he quickly gave his suggestions and a plan of action. By the end of the day, we had a written invoice outlining the details of the job. The job was scheduled to take place over two days. Day 1 went as scheduled; the crew removed all of the the old trees / plants and bed contents and cleaned up / prepped the beds for the new planting material. Day 2 started with stump removal but rain kept interfering. I really couldn't believe how the crew kept working so hard through two solid cycles of pouring rain. Finally, it was clear the rain wasn't letting up and work had to cease for the day. Day 3 resumed the work (with sunny skies!) and the crew got all the stumps out, new trees in, new sod installed, pine needles distributed, everything watered and cleaned up. The crew is absolutely amazing! Not only do the new trees / beds and sod look great, the whole back yard appears to have been given a facelift. There also wasn't a single bit of evidence any trucks or equipment had been on our property. (And this was a dirty / muddy job!) In addition to the professional and quality job, everyone on the crew is friendly and likeable too! We have plans to begin a remodel job soon that will require some landscaping redesign of another portion of our yard. When we are ready to start that phase of work, Kevin James Landscape will be the team we call in.

+ -1 moreTired of living on lakefront property after heavy rains, I contacted Kevin via his website after what I now know to have been a misunderstanding with another landscaper. Kevin came out that week and viewed my yard. He provided an estimate within a day or so. The price was a bit higher than I wanted to pay but Kevin did state that he warranties his work and that if there was ever a problem with the installation he would come out and take care of it, no charge. He even stated that if I had any other work done in the yard that he would be glad to advise so that the work does not interfere with the french drains. We scheduled the install and Kevin and his crew arrived on time and started the work. The crew came out for the next two days, rain or shine - and it did rain, to complete the work. The crew worked really hard and did a great job. I was impressed with their work ethic and how dedicated they were to doing the job right. After digging trenches and installing the drains then covering with gravel, they seeded the areas and put down fertilizer. The grass is now growing back pretty nicely and the french drains are fantastic! I no longer have to practically bathe my dog every time he comes in after it rains. No more muddy lawnmower trying to cut grass two days after it rains. Overall, this was a great experience and Kevin's crew did an excellent job! I do recommend them and would use them again, except next time maybe with a coupon. :-)

+ 0 moreWe had a serious drainage issue in our yard, where after a heavy rain we might have 6 inches of standing water. We contacted 3 landscapers to evaluate and make suggestions. All 3 offered very conventional recommendations, including big grates in the yard, and removing several very nice trees. All 3 were between 15 and 20k, not including the tree removal. We were not satisfied with any of these suggestions and decided to keep looking. I contacted Mr James, and although I wasn't happy about the upfront fee, asked him to come out and take a look. I was very glad I did! Mr James looked at the problem for a short time, and almost immediately suggested a completely different approach - a dry creek bed over a french drain. He drew out a proposal, listened to our concerns, made changes based on them, and got the contract. His team arrived on the day and the time he said they would. They spent 4 days working. They were an excellent team - worked hard, paid attention to what they were doing, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. At the end, it was a beautiful job. We are very happy with it - in fact, it came out even better then we hoped. After almost a year, and many heavy rains, there has not been a hint of flooding in the yard, and our crawl space has finally dried out. I am pleased to recommend Kevin James Landscape
Description of Work: Put in a french drain system along side of the house, through the back yard, and out to a drainage culvert. Added a rock dry creek bed on top. Leveled part of the yard for a patio. Added a small berm along the property line to redirect some of the water. Did general landscaping, reseeded where needed, added pine needles to wild areas.

He was very prompt in returning phone calls and e-mails. His supervisor for our job, Andy, was always available, on the job, and made sure all details were done to our satisfaction. We are very pleased with the retaining wall, water features, and lighting. We hired them also for designing our courtyard and landscaping our back yard (see separate report under Landscaping.). We would highly recommend Kevin James' services for any landscaping or hardscape (stone or water feature) project.
Description of Work: Removed old retaining wall (timber) and plants above timber wall. Installed Belgard Celtik Wall in Sheffiield Beige/Black stone (new retaining wall with steps). Also installed a matching stone area to surround a water feature. Installed the water feature with pump, drain to street and 2 underwater landscape lights/transformer. Also installed a smaller water feature and arranged for necessary electrical outlets for the 2 water features. Also installed 5 Vista copper lights along top of new retaining wall (under cap) that shine down onto the wall. They also graded and re-seeded disturbed turf areas.

He and his designer, Michelle, drew up a detailed plan for the "Charleston" courtyard/garden that we wanted for our side yard, and also plants for the natural area in back of the retaining wall.The final project is absolutely beautiful. The Antique Brick Paver edge creates an oval area that is sodded in the middle, with different plants and trees around the perimeter. As an entrance to the courtyard, there is a path of large stones leading up to a trellis. At the other end of the courtyard, there are more large stones creating a patio area between our deck and the large water feature. They installed 2 uplights that shine on the water feature, retaining wall, and Japanese maple above the wall. They cleaned up the natural area behind the retaining wall and planted new trees and bushes, covering the area with pine straw. The supervisor for our job, Andy, was always available and handled all of the details to perfection. They had previously installed the new retaining wall and water features (see separate report). We can highly recommend Kevin James for any landscaping or hardscape project.

Not professional at all. why have a Phone # if they are not going to even return the prospective customer's Phone Call.Not sure How they have accumulated all the A reviews but based on my expereince this unresponsive and unprfessional lawn maintenance company gets a F.

He was eager, courteous and wanted to make certain that I was pleased with the project. He listened to my thoughts and integrated them into the plan. His team consisted of the hardest working men I have encountered. Well worth the cost and I love what I see now every day I pull into the drive! Lots of positive comments from neighbors, too. I will definitely use them again in the spring to complete another major project around a pool.
Description of Work: Changing the existing landscape (removal of trees/shrubs/plants) and re design of area, pruning trees and shrubs that remained, conditioning of beds, mulching and over-seeding and aeration of lawn.

+ -1 moreKevin was fine and a very nice man. He asked for $100 to come out and do the estimate or proposal. That was fine and I paid him that, but that’s deducted if you go with him for your work. I think he would have been just fine. I liked him very much. He gave me a good proposal. He didn’t include taking trees down and I had to find somebody to do that on my own. I probably would have gone with him, but then I got a quote from another company that I am using now. Kevin’s estimate didn’t include leveling my yard and re-seeding it. I had to do that separately. So, I ended up going with the guy who was more inclusive since it saved me having to find somebody else. My overall experience with him was very positive. He was a good guy. He does charge for coming out and doing the estimate, but he is very upfront about the fact that he does that. So, if you don’t want to do that, then you never need to have him come out.
Description of Work: I received an estimate from Kevin James Landscape in August for a drainage problem. Kevin was going to put in a couple of drain lines and two catch basins. He was going to run one of the drains all the way out to the street.

Andy, in particular, is extremely courteous, professional and detailed-oriented. Because our landscaping work involved time constraints due to the overall home addition project schedule, Kevin James worked with us to ensure the landscaping got done on time and on budget. We recommend using Kevin James Landscape.
Description of Work: Kevin James Landscape completed significant work on our property during the summer of 2011. We recently added an addition to our home, which required a new drainage perimeter around the house, which ran down the length of the driveway and day-lighted near the street. Kevin James Landscape trenched two drain pipes - one a dedicated drain pipe from the house gutter system; the other a French drain to collect runoff water from the slightly sloped backyard. In addition, Kevin James Landscape handled all of the landscaping work after the home addition was completed. This landscaping work including defining mulch beds, mulching, and seeding/fertilizing/strawing the front, side and backyards.

+ 1 moreI can't say enough about how pleased I was with the entire project. It was refreshing to hire a crew that was very professional and knew exactly what to do. Because of the size and cost of the projects, I was initially concerned about the results, but those worries were put to ease after the first day that Kevin's crew showed up. Kevin recorded all our previous discussions and communicated my desires to his crew chief, Andrew. Together, Kevin and Andrew made sure that everything we discussed was accomplished. From the beginning, Kevin returned my initial phone call promptly and followed that up with a site visit to provide me advice and an estimate. He arrived on time as we scheduled. Kevin is very knowledgeable and provided very valuable recommendations for landscaping, drainage, and the new patio materials. If you're not sure what to do with landscape or hard scape, I would definitely ask Kevin. Because I wanted to be on site during the project, he made sure his crew arrived as scheduled and completed everything on time as they had predicted. How often does that happen!? The crew chief, Andrew, was also very impressive and professional as were his other workers. They were very well organized for each day they arrived. The only reason I would even venture out to would be to see their progress, which was always more than I had anticipated. Not once did they do anything I was not happy with. Andy also made some good suggestions with the patio design and drainage for my crawl space door well. My yard and patio look beautiful now. The crew that put in the patio are true artisans. Description of Work: Kevin actually did three projects for me. The first project involved landscape work in 5 major beds in my front yard and side yards. The second was to install a french drain along side my driveway, and the third was to replace my existing broken rock patio with Belgard pavers (approx 550 sq ft). Description of Work: First Initial contact with this person. I felt talked down to on the phone and have no desire to do business with him now or in any future dealings. I did not get the feeling that he really wanted my business. This was our second quote and very sad to say it was not a good experince with Mr,.James!

He was professional from the get-go -- listened to the issues we were having and my thoughts on remedying them, and made his own suggestions (as the professional landscaper) for the best resolution to our drainage issue. Both he and his general manager Andy delicately handled a neighbor's concerns that arose while they were working, and made it known to me that they considered that part of what we hired them to do. Kevin kept me informed every step of the way and followed-up after the work was done and we'd had a chance to see it in person to make sure everything was done to our liking. They were a first class operation from start to finish, and I would definitely hire them again or recommend them to anyone in need of anything from basic to full-scale landscape work.
Description of Work: Installed 60' of 4" French drain along the front of our house to a Chinese catch basin, including a catch basin along the lowest point of our front walkway to address flooding after rain. Graded and laid fescue sod on entire front yard, removed existing bed materials and installed 5 cu. yds. of mulch to front beds.

+ 3 moreKevin and his team did an excellent job and in a timely fashion. His team was very friendly and did everything they could to make sure the job was done perfectly. We give him the highest rating and I will definitely use him again!
Description of Work: Kevin made the initial visit outlining the plan for landscaping. There were things I could not visualize so he came out again to show me the plan and walk around the yard. We took out bushes, trimmed trees and planted new things along the side and back of the house. Some things we saved and they transplanted them. They paved with brick an area for the grill and that looks wonderful. He pruned all of the boxwoods in the front of the house where we also added lighting that looks amazing.

+ 2 moreKevin and his crew arrived exactly on time and did a comprehensive walk through with me while discussing the job in detail. He turned it over to his assistant, Andy, who was very pleasant and completed all the work within 6 hours on a day of arctic-like temperatures! Andy made sure to include me and my wife in the entire process and made some on-the-fly adjustments to the plan based on input from my wife. Kevin is a proactive thinker and made great suggestions along the way to keep the final price in line with the estimate. Andy is terrific to deal with, is very friendly and his work is thorough. After the work was done, Andy had the patience to wait for me to complete something I was in the middle of and then he took the time to go through the operation of the lighting transformer and also showed me how to change the light bulbs and position/orientation of the lights. I plan to engage this company again in the spring to do some more involved landscaping work. They really do it right and approach the job with enthusiasm, vigor and professionalism. I would heartily recommend their service to anyone.
