Our furnace failed in December, 2007 and we were referred to them by a friend. This happened about 1-2 weeks before Christmas so we were quite anxious to get a new furnace installed as quickly as possible. We contacted them and they responded in a timely manner and were able to install the new furnace immediately. We have been quite pleased with the furnace and have continued to maintain a service contract with them since that time. The technicians that have provided the maintenance have always been very courteous and friendly, and always willing to answer any questions that we might have. We would definitely recommend them based on our experience and continued service.

Pretty nice people especially the assistant Heather. Hired them to replace a furnace in the attic. The actual furnace install went smooth; however, the initial discussion noting an option to perform gas pipe bonding became a sticking point later. It was mentioned that I should consider this bonding service given my type of gas line. Miscommunication took place as I thought they'd add this to their service since I didn't really know what it was, and they thought I'd take care of it with the electrician I had (even though I clarified the electrician would only be on site a few hours). During the install I noticed it did not take place and thus the miscommunication on our understandings. Nevertheless, a couple weeks later I decided to have Stone Services perform the bonding. They promptly came out and attached the bonding, drilling into my slab and damaging bathroom tiles in the process. Mistakes happen and they fixed a week later. However, a second mistake was noticed by a certified electrician on site for other work. The electrician noted that the bonding was egregiously wrong as they spliced multiple pieces of copper together rather than one continuous piece. Since this was in the crawl space I would have never known. I brought this to the attention to Stone services which they came out promptly to fix. Stone Services then saw it fit to remind me of the initial conversations on bonding, they were just trying to help (as if I was suppose to thank them for incorrect work) and assure me that millions of homes don't have this bonded....which somehow was suppose to make it okay that the work performed and I paid for was incorrect. In the end, the issues got resolved and mistakes happen, but I could have done without their last few email communications.

Their price value was great. They had very competitive pricing, quality equipment and good responsiveness. Their staff is friendly. They were on time. They worked quickly and got the job done. It turned out great. They had the work inspected by a local inspector and when he had one change that he wanted them to make, they came back to tell us immediately and made the appropriate adjustments. They did that within my schedule without any issues. I would use them again.

They came out to complete a second opionion. He came out with a carbon monoxide detector. He came out and let us know that their was no issues. He also let us know that some of wiring was incorrect. He was great and we had a great experience. He explained things, and was honest and showed a lot of intergrity.

When our downstairs HVAC unit died we got three estimates and decided to go with Stone Services. Their price was on the high end but they agreed to service our upstairs unit as part of the price so we went with them. They put the new unit in that week so we had air during the hot time, which was great. But the unit failed inspection and they never responded to my requests to also service the upstairs unit until three months later. At this point the new unit had been running the fan all the time, which drove our power bill up to $554 one month. Bill from Stone Services finally came to fix the fan and then had his crew service the upstairs unit. But they then sent us a bill for servicing the upstairs unit even though he had agreed to do that as part of the $5540 we had already paid. Communicating with them and getting an appointment made was very, very difficult so we won't ever use them again.

To member: We have no records of servicing your home at any point in our records. I am unsure if an acquaintance of yours is using this account, but I do want to provide a bit of detail on our behalf. We have researched this and found who that person was so we hope to elaborate. We have the customers personal quotes from the other 2 companies you referenced and all of which are less. This was information that was given to us by the customer and put in your file and we used these quotes specifically to give you the best price possible. Respectfully, the information about us being the highest is fabricated. We have email communications from the customer to our office staff after each attempted phone call we made to try and schedule appointments. Most postponements were on the end of the customer being unavailable at the times our technicians were available which caused this to be pushed back 2 months. Lastly, we have an invoice that shows that your final bill was for refrigerant and your service was at a $.00 balance. I believe that is where confusion lies. Our tune-ups and services do not include refrigerant. I am respectfully understanding your right as an Angieslist member to post reviews on providers you hire, but on the side of the business end, we ask that members should be using this tool as non-members should use alternate methods to get resolutions. Also, when reviews are posted, please attempt to contact us so any misunderstandings can be worked out in person or over the phone.

I noticed that my unit was exceptionally loud. My 2nd floor unit is slightly larger than my first floor unit, so I would expect it to sound slightly louder than my other unit, but the sound is deafening. I hired another A/C contract to look at the unit in September, and he found that the noise is due to an incorrect condenser fan motor being installed. The specs for my upstairs unit are for 825 RPM with ¼ HP motor, but Stone Services, Inc. installed a 1075 RPM with ¼ HP motor. I called Lennox consumer affairs directly to confirm that the wrong motor had been installed. They confirmed, and explained that yes that would cause my unit to run louder than expected. I called Stone Services Inc, and was told Mr. Stone was on vacation, and I would need to wait and talk to him. Mr. Stone did return my call on the first day he was back, but he is not willing to make right what his technician did incorrectly. He is sure his technician let me know they didn?t have the right motor, but this universal motor would be fine and would allow me to have cool air immediately. I do not remember being told that, nor is it listed anywhere on my invoice. After much discussion, Mr. Stone?s best offer to me was that if I would pay him back for the motor he installed ($216.21), he would have a technician come out and then I would need to pay the costs and labor for another condenser fan motor, this time one within spec. My only costs for this repair should have been the initial diagnostic and labor charge. Mr. Stone is proposing that in addition to those two charges, I also pay for two condenser fan motors, and another labor charge. I will not proceed with this option, and instead will select an alternate company to repair the fan correctly.
Description of Work: In August of 2012, I contacted Stone Services, Inc. as our upstairs A/C unit was not cooling correctly. The technician reviewed the unit, and explained that I bad condenser fan motor. He replaced the condenser fan and as he was loading up to leave, we both noticed that the unit was still running incorrectly. He then proceeded to review the unit again, and determined that the capacitor also needed to be replaced. I paid $84 for the diagnostics, $89 for labor and $231.94 for the condenser fan motor replacement. For the capacitor I paid $44.50 for the labor, and $85.33 for the capacitor. My A/C unit was initially installed in July of 2008, so it was within the 5 year warranty period offered by Lennox. Stone Services said they would work with Lennox and then refund my money once they were refunded by Lennox. After numerous calls to Stone Services, I finally received $216.21 for the condenser fan motor replacement, but no labor or diagnostics fees were included. I noticed that the motor fan wires were hanging low enough that I felt they could be cut by the fan blades over time. I called Bill Stone and he said they were normally installed that way, but he would have someone swing by and confirm it looked ok. I did not receive a call back stating this has been done.

(removed member name) you called us to repair your ac unit. According to my technician you wanted him to repair the ac unit before he left. We refunded your money as soon as we recieved it from Lennox. The cost difference in the original motor and the universal motor was 15.73. You are correct that the universal motors do operate at a higher rpm. Replacing the motor with a universal motor is done everyday with no problems or complaints. It is very concerning that you did not report any noise concerns until after another contractor looked at the system and it had operated for 13 months. I am happy to assist you, however the motor has operated for over a year and cannot be returned or warrantee.

I got a call from Bill Stone and he was able to go to our house and give us an estimate within 2 hours. Once we agreed on price, he had a technician relocate our unit in a few hours. They did a quick, clean job of it, I'd recommend them to anyone.

I called and said I had a Trane Extended Warranty and did they do Extended Warranty work. First thing is I used them 6 months ago for a non-Trane unit and they had no record of the service call in the system. I told them I wanted verification that they would cover everything specified in the Trane Warranty document. Got an email that said that they charge more per hour than what Trane pays so I would have to pay the difference. And there might be some parts that I would be charges for too. Well, the Extended Warranty covers all labor and parts. I cancelled the service call.

This is the second time I've had Stone Services come out ? the first time was in December, when I had them install two Nest thermostats for me, and the second time was in mid-May when the A/C unit wasn't putting out particularly cold air. Both times the service provider (same person) was professional, as was the person who arranged the appointment over the telephone, arriving promptly when promised and on short notice, and was very personable and helped me understand waht he was doing. In addition ? and this is a small thing, but valuable to me ? the receipt was prepared on an iPad and emailed to me, so there's a much higher likelihood that I'll keep track of it in case I need it in the future. He also didn't seem bothered by the fact that the second service call occurred during a drenching downpour. No complaints with the service. I thought the price for the recharge might have been high, but I don't have any point of comparison, so I don't really know. Will happily use them again when I next have HVAC needs.

Two Stone Services technicians/installers worked all day with the removal of the old system and installation of the American Standard system. Both techs were on time as promised, efficient, and veru professional in their time with us. My wife appreciated them wearing their shoe covers while working in our house. A third senior tech arrived at the end of the day to charge the system, inspect and approve the installation. We are thrilled with the result.
Description of Work: After obtaining estimates and quotes from three other firms, we selected Stone Services for the installation and replacement of our 13 year old HVAC system. They installed an American Standard heat pump/airconditioner and air handler system which is much more efficient and quiet.

They are a good company and perform an exceptionally good job. They take time and explain exactly what they need to do so that I have a clue about what is going on. They came out when they were supposed to and did not keep me waiting. They gave me a time frame of about a two to three hour block and came right when they said they would. They call me ten minutes before they can arrive so that if I am at work or something I can be there when they reach. I have so far had two people come out from their company who have been courteous and I have been very happy with them. They were not overpriced but were in fact they below or standard with the pricing. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I use Stone Services Inc Heating Cooling Electrical for heating and air condition services. They come out out twice in the year; once in the spring and once in the fall for maintenance service to make sure my system is functioning properly and to check if there is any problems with it or any of its parts. The last time when they came out they noticed there was a crack in the pipe which drains the system and they replaced it.

I had Stone come after having trouble with another company (a big national chain where the service is hit and miss), and they were recommended to me by another friend. The technician, Mike, was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain a lot of stuff to me about how the systems work, what type of maintenance is necessary and what's not, what could cause problems or not, etc. He seemed very honest, did not try to upsell me on anything, and did some basic maintenance at really no extra charge. I would definitely call them again and use them for yearly maintenance, even if they charge a little more than some of the other companies. I think the rate I paid was an hourly one - about $85/per hour.
Description of Work: I had Stone Services come check out my 10-year old heat pump while getting my townhouse ready to sell. A few issues had been found on the home inspection and I needed to know how major or minor they were and get quotes for fixing them, and get a general status report on the health of the system from an expert.

Stone provided a contract and personal warranty which specified the work would be compliant with NC regulations, would provide clean air, and would meet the special needs for the dust, mold, allergens-sensitive owner.Stone improperly installed the Heat Pump (improper water drainage/pad installed over unlevel dirt clods), and the ducts, and improperly mounted the air handler on ONLY 2 BLOCKS on soft soil (substandard) which the insurance engineers proved caused the airhandler to shift to the side away from the condensate water drain. The 2 blocks sank into the soil, tilted the airhandler, stopped all water drainage, caused water leaks, raised the humidity to over 80 % and caused severe mold infestation under the house, in the home, and through the vents to the outside. Stone left the high efficiency inline air filter cover opened which sucked the severe mold infestation from the crawlspace into the home. The owners physician diagnosed the mold infestation as did 8 professional licenced experts, the lab, and the 2 insurance engineers. Stone was shown their problems many times BUT refused to fix their problems which resulted in legal claims, court required mediation, and Stone's agent paying restitution. This brief descripton does not adequately explain or convey the medical problems, emotional distress, or costs that could have been avoided by proper work and maintainence or any effort to try to fix any of these problems. As the restitution payment proves, Stone was laible for all these problems

Initially the work was good, but they crossed the hot and cold water lines and had to come back to fix that issue. According to code there has to be an automatic shut off, which they didn't put in. Later when I sold my home they came back to install the cutoff. The owner of the company verbally told me that he would only charge me for parts, but then I got a bill for parts AND an hour of labor at $85. The whole bill was for 2.5 hours and I got a "credit" for 1.5 hours. This confused me since the guy doing the cutoff was only at my house for an hour. After literally 20 phone calls with no response except the receptionist getting annoyed and irritable, Bill Stone called me and said that the extra 1.5 hours was for TRAVEL TIME. He never mentioned that they charge for this and wouldn't budge on it. Their office is in Chapel Hill and I live in Chapel Hill, so I'm not sure why it would take someone an hour and a half to travel across a small town. I think it's very unfair to not disclose up front that you charge for travel time and it's also pretty bad business to charge the same rate for travel ($85/hr!?) that you do for skilled work.

I received a reasonable bid from them. A friend recommended them. The owner oversaw the project to make sure the job was done correctly. I was quite pleased with the overall work.
Description of Work: The company removed and disposed of an old heating and heat pump system for my 2300 square foot home. They installed a new Trane unit. No additional duct work was needed as they used the existing layout. The job took two days to complete.
