We responded to an Angie's List "Big Deal" for an 1800 sf metal roof for $7500 deal offer from James Taylor Construction (JTC hereafter). We had already researched metal roofs but we reviewed and renewed our research in high gear. Before signing in on the Angie's List offer (we were NOT willing to put thousands of dollars on a deal we weren't absolutely sure of), we called JTC with a list of questions we had, to see if their offer would give us the level of quality of roofing we had decided upon thru our very extensive research. All of their answers met our high expectations including gauge of metal, process in which color had been laid down on the metal during manufacturing, underlayment quality, their procedures in installation, etc. By the way, if you read enough about roofs in every source you can find, the answers you want will be apparent. In other words, do your research well. Almost immediately after we had paid AL for the Big Deal, JTC called us to make an appointment to come out and measure the roof exactly. We had already discussed, with Mr. Taylor, the fact that the roof was bigger than 1800 sf and that we wanted the better of the grades of underlayment. He arrived on time, spent enough time to survey the job and to allow exchange of questions and information. A day later, he came back with the JTC roofing director, Ed Woody; they measured the roof and then we discussed other aspects. They said it would take about 2 1/2 days and we established the date. On that date, 5/13/13, the crew arrived very early in the morning to meet the truck full of supplies. They worked until nearly 7 PM, steadily and "sweatily". They were clean, pleasant, and unobtrusive. As they were getting ready to leave, they told us so and reported the time they would arrive next day, one where again, they drove all the way from Wendell to Hillsborough by 7:30 AM and worked til after 6:30 pm steadily. In almost exactly 2 1/2 days, the job was completed except for the need for 3 sheets of additional metal since the 3 they had were a little too short. At various times in the process, Ed Woody drove in and checked on things. As things were wrapping up, he said he would have the longer metal sheets ordered and expected they could install them the following week but that all was sealed to prevent rain entry. Two days later, Tropical Storm Andrea moved thru and dumped 5 inches of rain on our house. The next day, we had 2 inches more and the third day, an inch. No leaks! Of course, we didn't expect any. And, as predicted, the noise of hard rain on a metal roof was no noisier than that on the old asphalt roof. As predicted, the crew showed up the following week and in an hour or so, had installed the 3 longer pieces of metal. We had absolutely NO complaints in ANY of the process. We continually tell everyone who is interested in listening to us that James Taylor Construction gave us a flawless experience and that their professionalism and courtesy were beyond and above nearly any other we have had in the past.

- I give them high ratings on quality as people, although I do not know their quality of product. They had a considerable referral list for product. - I give high rating on punctuality and responsiveness as they arrived at the estimator meeting on time and both provided quick responses to follow up communications, and considering the dialogue was regarding not doing the job, this is notable. - I give them high rating on professionalism for all the reasons outlined in above messages. - Price N/A. I was not prepared to pay the required price for roof for a one story at that time. Had other high expenses. Understood from my neighbors that the price listed by James Taylor Construction was the reasonable rate for homes of our type so JTC was in the right ballpark.
Description of Work: I did not end up using this provider as I was a novice to buying roofs and truly did not understand that the home square footage does not translate to the roof square footage on a one-story home before I purchased the BIG DEAL. However, the folks that run James Taylor Construction are such honorable, high integrity people, both the estimator and the owner, they understood my naiveté, talked me through the process, and helped me realize that the BIG DEAL price would not nearly cover my home. I want to recommend James Taylor Construction for their ethical way of conducting business.

During the initial visit to assess possible work and time, we requested that the patio door be replaced, 2 pendant lights and the foyer light. We were told all could be done in one visit with 2 handymen. The patio door was removed and the one we special ordered with frame and all was installed. Upon completion we complained the door sticks horribly and his response was "you know it's a good seal, but once it's broken in it will be fine". Also, the lock (which was from the previous door and worked fine there) got stuck if you turned it too far on the new door. It has been 9 months and to open the door an adult need to hip check or pull the door pretty hard when opening or closing. The lock did finally stop sticking, but only after my husband took it off and put it back on. The pendant lights were replaced as requested, but they left black marks on the walls from where the ladder hit the walls. They informed me that the ladder I own (they did not bring their own) was not big enough to change the foyer light. We already knew this, otherwise we could have changed it ourselves. He told me he could borrow a ladder from someone else and get it done for us. 9 months later the light is still in a box in my dining room. They were very nice gentlemen, but I would not hire them again.

These guys were very nice, honest, and did a good job. My doors close right and don't have drafts any longer. Plus they helped me go beyond the terms of the deal for only a modest increase.
Description of Work: They came to redo all the seals for 4 doors, and also caulk 20 windows. I had a few other handy-man projects related to doors and windows, so I asked them to come back to redo some jams, plane down a sticky door, and adjust some door handles.

With the variety of work that they did, they were going over their allotted time so we needed an extension. The rate that we had discussed prior to the appointment I believed to be $75/hour to cover both workers. At the appointment. they stated it was $75/hour each. I was not happy with this but we negotiated a rate in the middle for them to complete their work. After they had left and upon a complete examination of their work, I discovered that one of the workers had not anchored the curtain rod at one one of the three connections. I called and they did send the other worker out to complete the work which was done to my satisfaction.
Description of Work: The provider repaired a couple portions of our deck. They replaced a light in one room put in curtain rods in another and repaired some broken tile in the master bath.

We needed a new roof (our current roof was 20 years old), and I saw James Taylor Construction's coupon for a new architectural style roof for $4815.00. I read the reviews for the company and they sounded great, so we purchased the coupon. Mr. Woody came out to measure, and our house was slightly over the 2000 sq ft limit for the coupon, but we were happy to pay the difference. We also chose to add on a drip edge for an additional amount. Mr. Woody showed us shingle samples, and we chose a color, signed the estimate, and they were able to fit is in the following week. They showed up promptly and in 48 hours we had a gorgeous new roof. Thank you James Taylor Construction for making our first big home repair project so easy!

Start: Angie's List promotion. I bought the coupon. Jas. Taylor contacted me promptly via e-mail, and came out to inspect the house. They informed me that there would be an upcharge for the extra square footage and the steep slope. PRICE: $4,299 (Angie?s List Special) $1,800 (extra square footage and steep pitch) The company also sent a couple of useful documents via e-mail. One was titled, "What to expect when we replace your roof." This was very useful, explaining how sawdust gets into the attic and nails poke through the plywood. They made the effort to be sure there were no unpleasant surprises. They dropped off color samples of the shingles they offered, which allowed me to compare colors with the rest of the neighborhood and make an informed decision. They also offered to show me a full-sized sample of my color just to be sure. Once the work date was scheduled, they showed up when they said they would, and did the work in the time they said - less that two days on the job site. Cleanup was pretty thorough. I found less that a dozen nails around the house, and there were virtually no shingle fragments or other debris left behind. Also, I have no idea if any of the crew smoked, but there were no cigarette butts left behind. James Taylor Construction is easy to work with via e-mail and telephone.
Description of Work: James Taylor Construction replaced the shingles on my house and added a ridge vent. The shingle replacement was an Angie's List coupon promotion, the ridge vent was done at my request.

Our 12 year old house has settled, and 2 of the doors had visible light showing through along the edges. We were extremely pleased with the expertise of these professionals who worked painstakingly to fix them! One door had gaps in 3 places, and required multiple repair methods, additional parts, and plenty of perseverance. Everything was completed successfully, and the gentlemen were polite and friendly. We will certainly be calling them again!
Description of Work: We purchased the Window and Door Winterization Special. Most of our windows were still fine, but a few needed caulk, so they were done. 2 of our 3 exterior doors were problematic, and repaired to our complete satisfaction. They also replaced the weather stripping on the door leading into the garage, which I never would have thought of, and of course this saves money. The two exterior doors took more than 2 hours of diligent work, because they were not hung properly when the house was built. There was still time left, so they offered to do a quick handyman job. We had done a few (botched) wall patches and one of the pros smoothed it out very nicely with additional spackle..This was above and beyond the contract, and we knew by then that these pros were also kind people.

I had seen a Big Deal on an Angie's List e-mail for a new architectural roof for $4299.00. I knew I needed a new roof and I liked the architectural roof , so after reviewing James Taylor Construction on Angie's List, I decided to call for an estimate. The estimate would be for roofing my house, garage and well house. After speaking on the phone with Mr. Ed Woody, the contact person for roofing at James Taylor Construction, he came to my house to get the information he needed for an estimate. In a few days I received an estimate for the additional charges. I decided to go with it, so I bought the Angie's List Big Deal, called Mr. Woody, picked out the shingle color, signed a contract, and the roofing was done by March 11, 2013. Mr. Woody was very nice and easy to work with. He and his roofing crew did a great job. The roof looked great ( my wife picked out the perfect color shingles ), the clean up was great and we were very happy we chose James Taylor Construction and Mr. Ed Woody for the job.
Description of Work: Replaced roof on house, garage and well pump. This included: Removed and disposed of existing roof Installed 15 pound tar paper Installed " Ice and Water Shield " around all protrusions Installed starter strip around roof perimeter Installed limited lifetime architectural shingles Installed new pipe collars Installed shingle over ridge vent across all peaks Cleaned roof, gutters, and grounds of all excess roof material.

Between my neighbor and myself, we solicited about 5 bids on both houses. The JTI price was inline with the competitive bids. The salesman, Ed Woody, was low pressure an very helpful, offering all options but not pushing for more sale than was required. The crew turned up when expected and finished in the time frame predicted. The site was prepared well before work was started and it was clean when they left. I am particularly happy with the attention to detail and very pleased with the end result. As the job got under way i identified other minor issues with the siding and trim that I wanted corrected and Ed was able to mobilize additional sub-contractors at a moments notice. The final invoice was exactly inline with the upfront expectations. No surprises. I will definitely use JTI again and I have recommended them to neighbors.

On the plus side, the two handymen were congenial.I contacted Paul and explained that with the 2 full days of handyman services, I needed 2 garage door openers and a storm door installed plus replace a hanging light fixture with another. He not only said he could do this, but suggested I provide him a list of other jobs to do for me should he finish these tasks in the alloted time I had paid for. When I attempted to schedule 2 consecutive days for him to work, he said he wanted to bring his partner and have the 2 of them work everything in one day. I told him i preferred 2 separate days to allow me time after the first day to purchase any additional materials he may need to complete any of the tasks. He assured me that he could work more efficiently if he had a partner assisting him. I relented but also reminded him that I wanted the garage doors completed that day and explained that while replacing the light fixture would not take long, it was in the middle of my foyer and required a 14 foot A-shaped ladder to reach the light fixture. So when he and his partner arrived with a 10 (or maybe 8) foot ladder, I knew this was not going to be a good start. Paul said he could borrow a taller ladder from a friend nearby and drove off to get it. 40 minutes later he returns with a 12-ft ladder....still too short. Thus, he was never able to replace the light fixture for me. Problem 2: He and his partner begin installing the storm door (I might add that the directions state it should take about 90 minutes to install...and I personally installed my own at another house in 2.5 hours). THEY SPENT ALL DAY installing the door. They "graciously" stayed til about 6 PM when they finally finished the door (It took 2 professional handymen all day to do what should have taken them 2 to 3 hours maximum). To their credit, they said that while the hours on my coupon had been used up, they would return and "give me" an additional 2 extra hours to install the garage door openers. They returned and actually spent about 2.5 hours but only ASSEMBLED 1 garage door opener in that time. Out of curiosity, I attempted to assemble the other one with a friend and it took us all of 35 minutes. Before they left, we disagreed about the expectations and outcomes. They figured that they worked more than 16 total manhours so they considered the job done. I told them that these jobs should not have taken them that long to complete and that in our initial discussion, they said they could complete those jobs. Over the next couple of months, they did return briefly on 2 occasions and actually completed one garage door...except that the sensor beam was installed at ground level when it should be about 6 inches from the ground (OK, I can deal with that). I even went as far as to say "if you could just complete the installation on high - the part where a ladder is required - I'll finish the rest for the other door. As of 18 Feb, they left for good having left the other door uninstalled. Between all this, they did hang a curtain rod and installed a bathroom light fixture (these were on the list of things to do once the "big jobs" were done). So for my $598, I got one garage door 90% installed, 1 storm door 95% installed (still needs to be caulked), a curtain rod hung, and a bathroom light fixture replaced. I should note that Home depot would have installed each garage door opener and the screen door for about $97 each (total of about $300). So I still have a garage door opener to install, a foyer light fixture that needs replacing, and less money with which to do it. My recommendation is if you ever decide to hire this company, PAY BY THE COMPLETED JOB (Not by the hour).
Description of Work: I purchased 2 $299 handyman for a day coupons and requested to have a hanging foyer light replaced and 2 garage door openers and a storm door installed.

Well customer, I am sorry that you are disappointed in our work. If you want to call me to discuss your concerns I will be more than happy to discuss it with you. While I would love to mention several points concerning the situation that you seem to have failed to mention, I don't think this is the proper forum to do so. All I can say is that at the end of the day, I can look you in the face and tell you I did what we discussed and I did the best job that I could and we far exceeded the time you purchased on your coupon. My main complaint was the amount I paid for the work that was done. I basically had weather stripping changed out on 3 doors for $199. I asked about a 4th door but, would've had to pay additional for that. My windows were not in need of any caulking so there wasn't anything to be done to them. Paul was great about going around and checking that they were closed tightly though. My fireplace was another area of concern but, there was nothing that he was able to do about that either. The experience wasn't terrible, just a little disappointing.

Ms. C, I am sorry that you were disappointed in the Coupons value. The coupon wording and pricing is set by Angies List. As for your fourth door, which was not a door entering in the house but the garage, we discussed that it was in good shape and not in need of replacement, I never said anything about an upcharge. All your doors that lead into the house were done along with the adjustments to each door to make sure that they were closing tightly. As for your fireplace, I explained some details about the issue that you were having but it would have meant dismantling your mantel to determine the root cause. This was obviously not in the scope of the coupon. I strive to give everyone the best service that I can, I am sorry that you were disappointed in your experience.

We are a very satisfied customer and would definitely recommend Paul. He arrived on time on the day agreed upon for this work and was very professional. He placed weather stripping on 3 doors and sealed the window frames. He was very thorough and did a great job of cleaning up afterwards.
Description of Work: We purchased a Door and Window Winterization / Air Leak special and are so glad we did. Had some air leaks in three exterior doors and needed new weather stripping on them. Thanks to Paul the doors are now airtight. So glad we joined Angie's List!
