I sent an email inquiry about their services on 3/11/2012 and received an auto-response that "We will be responding to your email shortly." I sent a follow-up request on 4/4/2012 and received another auto-response "We will be responding to your email shortly." As of November 9, 2012, I have not received an email or phone reply to my inquiries. I guess that they have all the business they can handle.

In addition, the workers did a thorough clean-up in every area of the house in which work was performed as well as a thorough cleanup of the crawlspace and areas around the crawlspace doors. A supervisor came out after the job was completed, and did a thorough inspection of the work. Excellent service.
Description of Work: Indoor Environmental Systems performed a thorough inspection of my home, and recommended remedies and provided estimates. Workers arrived on time, were courteous and professional, and carried out contracted work on time. I was very satisfied with the quality of the work, especially the radon testing and provided-meter. Befoe-and-after photographs were provided, a valuable record in case I sell the house. Indoor Environmental Systems is a quality company, and I reommend them highly.

My house was built in the early 70's and is 1,100 ft sq and is very modest. The estimate was for insulating the crawl space ($3,349) and for doing the crawl space ($7,410). I thought this was outrageous and feel that I could get similar work done, albeit maybe not the cadillac version for 1/5-1/10 of this cost.
Description of Work: I used one of the Angies list coupons to get an energy audit, but really what the gentleman did was walk around look at the house and give me an estimate of what it would cost for the company to increase my house's energy efficiency. Basically, I paid $100 to get an estimate. I would consider this a ripoff.

Auditor did a very good job of explaining issues he found as I walked the house with him. Only negative is that several of his comments didn't make it into the written report. Partly my fault for not writing everything down.

From beginning to end, excellent. HIghly recommend IES for quality work, superior customer service, innovative green approach, attention to detail, good communication throughout the project, and caring for employees, the latter of which I believe will always reflect in the end product for the customer. The owners, management, administration and onsite group-- IES has a wonderful, professional team. My appointment was quickly scheduled with Steve, one of the owners, who came to the house to assess the situation and detail options for resolution. Their quotes came quickly, as did the contracts/scheduling for the work. I took the more moderate approach of the two options, and Steve was still wholeheartedly enthusiastic toward the project. I believe this underscores his professionalism. The onsite team was also professional, pleasant, neat and had an incredible work ethic. Example: When waiting for one person to pick up a new pump, which we had not thought would need to be replaced, and all else had been done on the crawl space that could be done at that point, the balance of the team cleaned the company truck- no idle hands in this group. IES is an impressive and happy group of professionals. IES followed up after completion of the job, ensuring I was happy, before they sent the invoice. They sent photos via email of the 'before and after' and exhibited extra patience when my computer wouldn't accept the photos the first couple times. Cyber fun. The cost was more than I had originally planned to spend on my crawl space; however, I had 3 quotes and IES was in the same ballpark. I believe this means that I didn't know costs involved with my situation. I do know I'm glad I hired IES for my solution!
Description of Work: -Closed conditioned crawl space so it's air sealed, clean, dry and energy efficient, insect and mold free. Actually it's dinner-party ready, should one consider holding a party on their knees under the house. It's spotless and at a comfortable temperature, which is great for keeping inside the home at reasonable temperatures. -Installed insulation and mold-treated with clean seal non-toxic, odorless D-tox. -Ground covered with foil/foam and multi-layered radiant barrier foil insulation.-Exterior wall penetrations air sealed, and sub floor treated.-Entry door finished for being air sealed when closed-Filtered Fresh Air ventilation system installed-Containment of the small amount of existing mold & insulation fibers from entering home during removal-Demolition of ground rocks/dirt to make smooth surface and removal of old worn out barrier- Repaired existing french drain system and pump

I chose them because they had very high ratings on Angie's List. They did what they said they would do as far as we know. As a part of their service they are to come back once a year to make sure the seals are still in place and doing what they are supposed to be doing. They worked hard for an entire week.
Description of Work: We used Indoor Environmental Systems for mold remediation. They cleaned out the mold from our crawl space. They then sealed the crawl space and cleaned and sealed our attic out. The installed a radiant barrier in our attic. They also did a whole house cleaning with HEPA vacuums running.

Description of Work: INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS INCORPORATED, 924 W. Chatham St., Cary, NC., 27511, 919 – 234 – 98021. Our crawlspace was so damp and humid that it resembles a tropical rain forest. After 2 years of research and trying to be our own general contractor we found IES. IES organized all parts of the project and accomplished the work in 3 days 2. completely professional in all aspects.3. Knowledgeable of all aspects of work to be done 4. First interview, they were able to outline and describe what was needed.5. Complete mold remediation and treatment for long-term effectiveness on the wood substructure of the house. This is significant for the prevention of termite infestation.6. Replaced all old ductwork and redesigned to accommodate the addition of a mini split heat pump.7. Completely insulated and enclosed crawlspace. Our crawlspace has been damper than the outdoor environment.8. Installed a dehumidifier to assist controlling the extreme humidity. Had all extra electrical outlets installed for 2 sump pumps, 2 heat pumps, one dehumidifier.10. Had HVAC company to install mini split heat pump w/separate ductwork. 11. Answered every question I ever had before starting the multi-faceted project, during and after the project is finished.12. Very accommodating – quick, clean, polite, informative, patient technicians and management. 13. Technicians were always working, clean, polite and helpful if I had a question.14. Because of the thorough encapsulation of the crawlspace. They also installed FFAVS for fresh air ventilation and filtration.15. all was completed in three days.

No services were actually performed. I called and inquired about the Angies List deal "$99 for a Whole House Energy Audit and Air Quality Assessment! "
Description of Work: Did not get off to a very good start here. I feel that I may have a mold issue and considered getting an air quality assesment done. I saw the Angies Deal for "$99 for a Whole House Energy Audit and Air Quality Assessment!" So I called and the lady that answered the phone while very nice wasn't very informative about what's involved. Basically, she described it as "Steve" (I'm assuming the owner) will come out and "walk around and look". There is NO air quality testing. My question was if you don't test, how do you know there's a problem where you can't visually see? The Angies Deal doesn't specially say NO testing and I would assume that an "assessment" would mean testing. Just beware when purchasing that you're paying for someone to come out and look around your house. She seemed a little miffed at why I was having an hard time understanding why testing wouldn't be done. The website says that this service normally cost $300 to perform this service. Again, why would I pay that much with no testing? I asked if she could have Steve give me a call. Thinking maybe he could give me an explination that made sense. She stated that he was to busy and wouldn't be able to call.

Member, I was saddened to read that your inquiry about our Energy Audit and IAQ assessment (Big Deal) left such a poor impression on you. I have spent many years in the energy conservation and indoor air quality field so my assessments are so much more than "walking around" your home. Our Energy Audits and IAQ assessments are extremely through and detailed. I inspect the crawlspace, all of the air ducts in your home and the attic; I take detailed pictures, including infrared to see where energy is leaking out of your home. We do offer mold testing and sampling, testing is not always needed or required. These tests are at an additional charge that we do not want to pass onto our customers if not needed. I apologize that you did not receive the detailed information you were looking for. Sincerely, Steve McLeod Owner - Indoor Environmental Systems

The work was fine. I think they’re one of the more expensive companies, but they do have a lifetime warranty on toxic mold, so I think it’s the worth the money. They were very accommodating, making time to do our work the last week of the year so we could get the tax break. They were also professional and good with following up too; we’ve been talking with them for awhile, about 6 months. It was a good experience overall!

They were fabulous to work with! I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a better company. It was an expensive job, but worth every penny. The gentleman and his wife that run the company are just exceptional people. They made sure I’d receive great service and were interested in doing a quality job. They provided me with a lot of information and answered all of my questions, explaining everything to me thorough. I felt very comfortable with all of the information that they had provided, since I did do some of my own research. I visited with another gentleman who had a walk-in basement done by them, and he raved about them too! Their crew that completed the work was wonderful as well. Since they’ve done the work, my utility bills have decreased. I know that I’m breathing clean, quality air. I’ve recommended them to my friends, and would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: I previously had a problem, and they provided an assessment. They told me what needed to be done and recommended other things to save me money in the long run. They went over some alternatives, too. I thought what they proposed was a good idea. They cleaned up all of that might’ve been growing in the basement, and sealed my attic.

We had just recently moved to North Raleigh from Southern California the month prior and rented a home, sight-unseen. My two year old was sick within a few days, my five year old daughter after a few days thereafter and after about a week my wife and I came down with acute sinusitis and bronchitis. It was really, really bad. I found mold growing under a couple of the air vents and reported it to the property manager. A few days later, the property manager sent out a "certified" mold technician (Keith from IAB Health Productions) who came out and did a visual inspection of the dwelling and air sampling, but found nothing. The property manager informed us that there was nothing wrong with the rental and we would not be released from our 12-month lease agreement. I needed a competent professional to get to the bottom of what was hurting my family, so I selected Indoor Environment Systems, Inc. from Angie's list. Steve did not disappoint. He went through all of the interior spaces of the home (including the attic, crawlspace, and HVAC ducting) he documented everything he found with digital photographs, tape lift samples and air samples. He had the lab results complete within a day or so and sent a detailed pdf report to me via email. When confronted with Steve's authoritative and detailed report, the property manager "decided" to release us from our lease agreement. Steve - who is also the owner - was very personable and took time to explain the factors affecting the indoor air quality of a home so I would know what to look for in the future. Steve is someone who clearly knows his trade and the quality of his work reflects that he cares deeply about what he does. Not surprisingly, he guarantee's all his work. His indoor air quality report was thorough and authoritative; far superior to what was produced by the property manager's chosen company (IAB Health Productions). I highly recommend Steve and his company and although I compensated Steve fairly for his services, I feel that I owe him a debt because his attention to detail saved me and my family from a potentially dangerous situation.

After a walk through review of my whole house, and a discussion of my concerns about excess heat in the summertime, I was given a list of ideas for energy effeciency projects I could do myself. I was also provided a proposal to add insulation, seal air gaps, and install an attic radiant barrier. I accepted the proposal after doing some research of my own. The installation went very well. The workers were on time, were careful to protect my carpets and property, and did a thorough and complete installation. While the price was probably not the lowest I could have gotten, the work was done so well and quickly, that I believe I received excellent value.

We purchased a large home with a disastrous crawlspace: moldy, wet, falling insulation, rodents, etc. Scott Jansen of Indoor Environmental Systems did a very thorough on site assessment and and gave us an estimate for a total makeover. He was very specific about the scope of the work and discussed in detail the benefits of crawl space vapor sealing and attic sealing. We had not planned on investing so much money in what was originally going to be a cleanup of the crawlspace, but after doing our research we were convinced that the energy efficiency we would gain would be tremendous. They did a meticulous job on the 3000 square foot crawl space, spending many 100 degree days underneath the house. We uncovered some foundation issues and they came back later to help clean up after the repairs at no charge. They discovered critical problems in the air system flex ducts which we also subsequently had repaired. The work was very professional. Great team, careful work, excellent follow-up by Scott throughout. Despite the large cash outlay for this major work on our home, we are convinced we will save money in the long run on the vastly improved energy efficiency. The air in the home is now as clean as can be. We highly recommend their services!

Estimate came in higher than expected. We asked if anything could be done on the price and they managed to shave a bit off, and every bit helps these days. They were lower than the other estimate we got. We were up early and ready for them by 6:45am, the time we were told they might arrive by so they could get an early start before the heat of the day crept up too much. I had to slide them down to a B on punctuality because they arrived at 7:40. The good thing was that my wife had already left for the day so we didn't have to worry about the driveway being blocked when she left. They laid down their runners and plastic on the carpet and such and got to work. We had used them to seal our crawlspace and the experience was similar. A very polite crew who worked diligently in not great conditions. I had to slide them down to a B for quality for one minor reason and one medium one. The minor one was that after they made sure our pulldown was secured properly at the top (one loose bolt and another that had worn the wood away and slid in and out with no resistance) the door did not line up properly for a good gasket seal. I ended up being the the one to suggest putting gasket on the side of the frame it went up against so that the thin line was sealed. The medium (almost major) one was that the installers were used to attics without ridge vents and had not left ventilation openings at the top of the radiant barrier. I had researched the barriers before we moved forward in getting one so was pretty sure they were needed (always research before having work done so you have at least a basic idea of what to expect). After they called to check with their boss they agreed that the ventilation gap was needed and went back to add it back in. (Luckily it was just a matter of cutting away the film and making sure the remaining part was stapled). They vacuumed before they left, and there was minimal insulation debris in the yard after they left. With the hot temps we have had we were able to get an instant test the next day. The temp upstairs was still warmer than the AC was set at, but matched the downstairs temp which usually does a lot better than the upstairs so the fact that they were the same was a good sign. And by 10pm the upstairs was at the AC setting, something that never happened before. Similar experience yesterday. Still warmer than the AC setting when we got home, but cooler than usual by a couple of degrees and by 10pm back down to the AC setting. Today is forecast for 102 so we get another good workout on things, but I expect it will be similar results. This isn't a miracle cure that will make your upstairs icy cold on the hottest days, but it has made bedtime temps much more pleasant. I would definitely recommend IES to anyone looking to have this work done, and after this week with some final numbers to share I expect to make such a recommendation to two neighbors who are considering having a radiant barrier installed if our experience is a positive one.

I saw the Big Deal, and since it's been blistering hot and my A/C upstairs wasn't really cutting it, especially in my bonus room, I thought this would be a great purchase to find out what could be done to make improvements. I also thought that the value was exceptional. And that's where the problem was. Scott came out, and was very nice, and showed me a number of issues related to problems that could be corrected in the house, specifically in the attic, to increase efficiency and reduce monthly power bills. However, I was told that the cost of the service provided that I received would normally cost less than $200.00 (I don't remember the exact number - it was 125.00, 150.00 or 175.00), not $300.00. When I received my report, I asked where the air quality portion of the assessment was, and was told that since I didn't have any obvious mold issues in my crawl space, there weren't air quality issues, and they did not provide any air quality testing as part of this deal. In my opinion, you can't judge air quality by sight. So I'm not really sure where the $300.00 of value was that I supposedly purchased...yes, there was a discount on the service provided, but the scope wasn't what I was lead to believe I was purchasing. In addition, I know there are other issues in my house that would aid in making the house more weather tight, such as replacing the weather stripping around the front door, which was not mentioned, or noted. It was obvious that the purpose of the Audit was to identify those products and services that IES provides, not really to provide a complete audit of things that would increase the energy efficiency of the house. There was a line on the quote that said Free with full scope of work (so I guess if I cherry picked from the items listed, I was out of luck), a $125.00 value, to make my pull down ladder as energy efficient as possible...was that supposed to be the remainder of the $300.00 value? I wouldn't purchase this Big Deal.

Description of Work: I took advantage of the Angie's List offer to have IES do an energy audit. They contacted me right away. Scott could not have been more professional or helpful and took the time to explain what he was doing. We then discussed different options and picked several that would fit my price range. A quote came right away and a time was set up; he is very responsive to any questions. Miguel and his crew were great. I had attic air sealing done to fill gaps and an attic ladder radiant barrier installed, as well as a water heater jacket and gaskets (weather stripping) for all the windows.

We chose this company over others despite the higher costs because they were 1) performing far more extensive work for the money and 2) they offered the only plan for lifetime warranty against a return of the mold versus one to two years for others. Viewed from the warranty, the price was more than competitive. If we had to redo the work of anyone else, the price would have more than doubled. They arrived on time for both the estimate and when the work began. The work took almost two full days to complete. They were at all times professional, polite and worked diligently. That was important when realizing that you live with a very noisy air filtration system in the house while work is being done. They removed everything from the crawl space, which was no small feat. Most of the work was under the house which was entered near the rear of the house. They had to "drag" a lot of materials back and forth across the front lawn near the garden, but they were extremely careful of not damaging anything. When they moved inside the house the next day to clean and seal all the duct work, they were again extremely careful. They placed plastic runners over the hardwood floors and carpeting up the the stairs and into all the rooms, and carefully guided the hoses over the hand railing so as not to just let it drag across the finish. When they were done, they patiently waited for us to select what items we wanted to return under the house and what items we wanted to dispose of and they then took care of disposing of the items for us. When they left, every bit of trash was gone with them and there was nothing left behind to tell that they had ever been here. I can say that the residual odor from the sealant is dissipating fairly quickly and that my nose and sinuses detect no mold at all, and that is a huge relief! Though the cost is big, it is not as big as the relief from the mold, the pleasure of breathing clean air and the knowledge that we have a long term warranty. Great job guys, and thank you!
Description of Work: Removed insulation then mold in the crawl space, cleaned and sealed all surfaces, including joists with expanding foam, installed radiant barrier on ground and walls, cleaned and sealed all air ducts. Installed a fresh air ventilation system for the crawl space. Removed and disposed of contaminated items from the crawl space, returned other items to crawl space upon completion. Cleaned, and replaced in part, the dryer duct at no additional cost. Actually much more detailed than the general descriptions here. Crawl space is now akin to a semi-finished room with the same air temps as inside the house.

Response from Indoor Environmental Systems Inc
Thank you for your report! I have reviewed your project and the "closeout pictures": the before and after pictures are impressive. The amount of mold in the air ducts and the debris in the dryer vent was nasty. Your clothes will dry faster at a lower cost and I am glad to hear there is no more moldy odors. Your crawl space is now guaranteed to be free of mold and It looks great! Here's a novel idea; How about turning your new handy-dandy "Radiant Barrier Crawl Space into a green house for growing winter vegetables; its cool, clean, no bugs and very energy efficient; you will however need a short gardener (hehe). Granted its a crazy idea yet we could make would work! I see you have our "Fresh Air Ventilation System", remember to change the filter each season (4x per yr) and maybe sooner if these North Carolina fires and smoke continue. We will send you an email reminder for the filter changes and the annual service checkup. Regarding the E-Contract signing - we like it because its so quick and easy - So thank you for your efforts on that.. It has been a pleasure working you :) Steve McLeod - CEO

I called Indoor Environment Systems approximately one week ago and spoke with Scott about getting an estimate for some attic insulation and an attic fan. He was extremely polite, professional, and knowledgable. He spoke with me about the concerns I had with my house and energy effeciency. I made an appointment for him to come to my house today at 3:30 to do the estimate. I specifically remember the date and time of the appointment because he told me he had a personal appointment himself today at 5:30, but that he thought he'd have plenty of time to get there if he came to my house at 3:30. I am a school teacher and had to leave a little early to be home by 3:30. No one showed up for the appointment or called. When I called Indoor Environment Systems at 5:00 (an hour and a half after my appointment time), the woman was polite, but she said she didn't even see the appointment on the books. Maybe this company has some organizational issues. Or maybe I didn't seem important because my job was not a very big job? Either way, I won't be calling them back. Which is unfortunate, because my first phone call with Scott was so pleasant.
Description of Work: I did not use the company.

FANTASTIC! Scott's team showed up at 7:30 and got to work. They removed all our old and moldy insulation, scraped and removed all the mold, then sprayed the crawl space with a product to prevent against mold in the future. They then put in all new insulation and encapsulated our crawl space entirely. The vents are filled with foam, the ground and half of the walls are covered in a very thick silver insulator and they installed a dehumidifier to control humidity. Our crawl space is now more energy efficient, mold and moisture proof, AND a functioning storage space. By the time I got back home from work at 6 they were completely finished, had cleaned up after themselves, and even put a new lock on the door to our crawl space. We are very impressed and happy with the results! I feel like we added another room to the house!
Description of Work: We were having high moisture levels and mold in our crawl space which was causing our hardwood floors to buckle. Scott met with us to discuss our options and gave us a variety of price ranges-we ended up going for the higher end because we were so impressed with his presentation and the guarantees Indoor Environmental Systems could give us.

There are just a couple of things I want to point out for a potential customer. This is an expensive product. This is the most expensive home improvement purchase I have made. In the end, I found myself a little disappointed in the look of the finished product. I'm not really questioning the effectiveness of the radiant barrier, as not enough time has passed, but the look is not quite as snug and form fitting as the pictures and videos on the web page. There are areas of the floored attic where the barrier 'tents' over a crossbeam. It seems that this would be prone to tearing or puncturing, as I move heavy objects around. Also, the barrier does not extend to the very edges of the attic. This is to allow some 'breathing' of the attic, but it does take away from the look of solidity in the attic. Again, I word this cautiously as to not make my high expectations of this project a deal-breaker, but I did believe this expensive work would look more valuable. I regret to say that this will keep me from having the crawl space sealed, as this would cost more than the attic work. Also, it took a couple of times to remind this company to deliver the attic fan cover, which was a minor problem that was made good on. But the professionalism of this company is outstanding. Every person I had contact with was extremely knowledgeable, very friendly and easy to talk to, and simply an expert in their field, all the way from the initial estimate to the billing process. I also appreciate their concern for the environment. This is a very professional, crisp company. They are honest and concerned, certainly a high-end company. And Scott Jansen is an interesting person in his own right. There is certainly no question of the integrity of this company.

Scott Jensen provided an accurate estimate and all details. He was involved, knowledgeable and very personable. Miguel was in charge of the crew. He was very responsive and very easy to work with. They arrived on time and worked diligently the entire day. The crew was great! Once the job was completed, there was no outside evidence of the work. Under the house is so pristine that we could have a meal down there. This was our best experience with work on our home---after 35 years of remodeling and upgrading. Steve has a wonderful staff and IES deserves all the great reviews.
Description of Work: Removed old insulation and installed new "green" insulation, sealed holes and cleaned air ducts and applied mold prevention.
