Said he wanted to do work in my neighborhood and that he never had. I got 5 estimates from Angies List all A vendors, but for some reason he was more than twice as high as the other builders. I tried to ask why, but did not get response. He was courteous and punctual, I guess he just really didn't want to do the work after all.

Dear Mr. [remove member name] - Thank you for the constructive feedback. I'm sorry that my proposal didn't fall within your budget. I strive to provide the highest quality of work and the best end results. It is unfortunate that you misunderstood my quote of $16,025 as $18,000 and that it has taken six months for this review to be posted, but I do sincerely appreciate your feedback. Owner, Bob Means

I had to wait almost 2 months for contractor to get through his backlog to get to me--- but wait was definitely worth it. Cost was reasonable (I had four estimates), references check out well, he showed up when promised, completed the project when promised (even with extra day of work to repair unforeseen damaged wood). We handled the coordination (what little was needed) on the project while we were on vacation on the west coast. Quality was excellent. Have already had many positive comments on the project. Would use him again, without any hesitation.

This went very well. I was very pleased with the crew and the result of the work. Bob was always available by phone if I had any questions (typically his crew build the entire deck). I would definitely recommend them. Their craftsmanship was top notch.
Description of Work: Built a deck (18x 16)on the back of our house. Deck is one story off the ground (we live on a hill). Added two doors. Added electrical outlets for the deck and a light. Deck has a 4x4 landing, and they used black metal balusters instead of the typical wood.

The finished product was very high quality. I got four estimates from Angie's List contractors and Decks By All Means landed right about in the middle. Translation: you get a really high quality finished product for a really fair price. Bob Means has LOTS of photos of his company's work and they all look really good! I liked that Bob didn't require any deposit and collects the bill after all the work has been completed. They also only do one job at a time, according to Bob. The deck was finished in about four days. The lead crew guys (Garrett & Gary) were fantastic and friendly craftsmen. It's obvious they have a lot of experience in building very sharp looking structures (decks, porches, etc.). I liked that they cleaned the work area thoroughly after every work day. There was one setback during the course of the project that was overlooked by multiple parties (Town of Cary inspection dept., Decks By All Means, and Duke Energy) regarding the right-of-way power lines that run behind my property and required survey. This delayed completion of the job by a couple days but it was resolved satisfactorily. Bob Means covered the cost of the survey ($400) which was not factored into the initial estimate. I was very happy Bob didn't choose to try to add it after the fact. He took full responsibility without trying to "pass the buck". I have had experiences where contractors have attempted that and they have never been re-hired by me to do another project. I will have Decks By All Means back to do more work in the future. You will not go wrong with this company. Mark V.

It all went very smoothly. The crew was quite capable, very polite and a pleasure to work with. The use of aluminum balusters now allows a much better view of our yard from the deck.
Description of Work: We had our old 12 x 24 foot deck removed and replaced with a new deck of much higher quality and visual appeal. A seven-step staircase with railings was included, as were two three-foot-long movable benches. The four foot high space under the deck was enclosed with wooden lattice panels with two access gates.

We looked at using Trek deck and the possibility of expanding the current deck. Bob came out to to give us several quotes around different options for the new deck. Bob and his team were professional and courteous returning all my calls promptly. The came out on day 1 and ripped down the old deck. We are very happy with quality of the work. The crew was very friendly and did a great job of clean up after they finished with the deck. Despite a few rain delays, Bob kept to schedule and his original cost estimate.

Better than I ever expected, in time and in fashion.
Description of Work: Because of an old and decrepit deck in need of replacement and expansion, searching Angies List provided us an excellently rated company to put to the test. Our needs were to first remove the old 10X36 foot deck and its approximate 4X28 foot side-of-the-house walkway and steps, as well as a small walkout upper deck off the master bedroom which was about 4X6 feet. The new deck would in essence replace the existing structure but then would be larger, extending another 8 feet, thus extending the whole length of the rear of the house, It would also step out twice, in incremental 2 foot, beveled/chamfered 45 degree steps, and be cantilevered 2 feet along that whole length. Also another 10X18 foot deck extending around the far corner would be a new addition. The old upper walkout was to be replaced with a 16X16 foot upper deck matching the contours of the stepped out section below, and be free of dripping water below. In discussing the details of the finishing type touches with Bob Means, we decided to go with the black aluminum balustrades that would keep openness to the view of our woods and add warmth and contrast, vs either wood pickets (too enclosing) or cable (very expensive and not 'warm'!). This project entailed about 1140 sq feet with about 250 of those being the upper deck, and that with its floor being 22 feet off the ground. Our other requirement was that it be done in a timely manner and before good usage weather have arrived. The project began with his crew removing the old deck and trucking off the remnants within 2 1/2 days, and 3 truckloads. Next, quickly up, was material delivery and the beginnings of installation; digging holes in this rocky ground is a challenge quite often; Locating 12 foot or 16 foot 6x6 foot posts can be exacting while tying them in; getting it all strait and true at the same time is a near art form in accomplishing. He and his crew are in complete almost non-verbal sync in all this, being as practiced as they are. Included in the construction of the upper deck was the installation of a 'rain shield', and gutter to keep the rain from falling through to the lower deck area. We did have that upper deck screwed down because if a problem should ever occur with it, where access would otherwise become a huge problem, that problem is now at least somewhat mitigated. The shield also provides a pseudo ceiling where any stuff from the upper deck will not now be falling down through to people, or their dishes, on the lower. It doesn't look bad either. The rain shield/gutter does work as advertised, and probably cost near an additional day in labor, and of course the material, but in our estimation, is well worth it. It's amazing how well and how fast this project went! 3 weeks, with 2 days out for weather and 2 more for a flu bug, and this whole construction phase was essentially done. There were ZERO communication lapses! The construction is beautiful; the methodology employed is great; the workmanship is to behold. We are left with a simply wonderful deck that will be enjoyed for many many years to come. Bob explained how this newer non-arsenic based treated wood really needs to be stained/sealed very quickly after construction vs how it used to have to wait for months for the same. We had that done since and couldn't be happier with his recommendation of a 'go to'. That was another tremendous recommendation of his! 3 days of sanding and staining/sealing and that too was done. Between the deck construction and the staining/sealing, we couldn't be happier with any of the results!! Having dealt with various contractors over the many years we've been here, we are particularly pleased with this outcome!

The job was well planned and the men were meticulous in their workmanship and cleanup. They were professional and kept us informed of the necessary permits, inspections and many details. Bob and his team are truly professional carpenters. We are using them to enclose our existing deck for an all seasons living space.
Description of Work: We had a existing deck that had been built very poorly. Bob and his team showed up promptly and were nothing short of amazing and professional. We had them build a 12x16 deck with 2 stairwells and a bridge from an existing deck to the new one. They suggested the new design. They offered an option of using alum uprights which we accepted. I'm a highly rated roofer on Angie's list myself and I know good work when I see it.

Bob was very professional and answered all my questions about using Trek for my decking. Once I found out that the Trex would put the cost of my deck out of my budget, I requested the same deck plan with regular lumber. Bob was quick with the requote and waited patiently while I got other quotes. In the end, I went with a different contractor due to cost.

Bob was referred to us by our electrician. Bob came out to multiple times to first educate us on the options available for constructing a screened porch. He was very patient and thorough to describe the different construction techniques and materials available. We decided to go with natural wood decking (for cost reasons), a plywood bead-board knee wall, true bead board ceiling and aluminum balusters. Bob explained his construction schedule, from permitting and inspections to the payment schedule. He doesn't ask for any payment upfront, but is paid progressively as the project is completed. Once permits were approved, Bob started work. He and his crew demolished the old deck, leaving the substructure. Though they used the existing joists, they flipped them because the previous builder had installed those joists upside down. He then added additional substructure for the new construction. Initial construction went quickly, with the initial inspections passing fine. The framing of the screened porch was completed without incident and when it came time for the trim and finishing, Bob and his crew were very helpful. From all of the options, we went with black aluminum balusters, a double landing staircase, two ceiling fans, ScreenTight branded screen (excellent choice), plenty of electrical outlets, two sets of flood lights and six recessed can lights. Bob's crew even installed the hooks for the new porch swing after the ceiling was completed, leaving me relieved I didn't have to do it myself. Bob's completion date was pretty close to the estimated schedule considering impacts he couldn't forecast, like weather, injury or particular inspectors. To note, Bob leaves the trades (electrical, roofing, painting) to good contractors he trusts. The work of the subcontractors was excellent and shows that Bob holds them to the high standards he holds his own crew. The only issue we had was miscommunication for the placement of electrical components. I made sure the electrician knew exactly what I wanted and in the end I was satisfied.
Description of Work: We hired Bob to replace our existing 12x12 deck with a 22x12 screened porch with knee-wall and an additional 10x12 grilling deck and stairs.

They did a great job and were a pleasure to deal with throughout the entire process. They secured all the permits from the Town of Cary and passed all inspections along the way. They worked through rainy days and cold weather to complete the project in a timely manner. We are very pleased. Thank you, Decks by all Means.
Description of Work: First I met with Bob Means to get the a bid with drawings. We did have some modifications along the way and they accommodated us with all of them. Bob went to the Town of Cary and secured permits for the deck and the electrical work. Bob provided detailed drawings with his proposal. Gary and Garrett removed the old deck completely. Then the lumber, which is very high grade, was delivered from http://www.tarheelwoodtreating.com/ Even though we had several rainy days in the process they worked through bad weather and finished the project in a timely basis and it passed all the inspections by the Town of Cary. Bob, Garrett, and Gary were very polite, friendly, and on time through the entire process. We are very pleased and highly recommend them for quality carpentry building decks.

Bob started in November by tearing down our existing deck. He then built a larger screen porch and deck off the back of the house. He encountered numerous problems with weather, holidays, us going on vacations, and turnover in staff but we love the new screen room and deck. The craftsman ship is excellent, he kept up updated throughout the entire process, and worked with us for changes. He left the property looking better when he left then it was before. He even came by one day after some painters had left cigarette butts on the ground to pick them up. We hadn't even noticed them. His pricing was in line with all the other quotes we received and the workmanship is excellent. We are going to be using him to build an outside bathroom next.

We were nervous about using Trex because it is much more expensive than wood or other composites, but he put us at ease by suggesting we go to visit his supplier in Morrisville. They have the various composite decking materials out in the sun and can tell you how many years each one has been weathered. SO helpful. We also went to the Trex online site where they let you see their actual colors on a virtual deck. We were pleased that Bob came to our house twice before we hired him and was very patient with our lack of expertise in deck construction. If you ask, he will give you his opinions but doesn't force them on you. He called to let us know when they would be arriving, and they were very dependable. He worked here with his crew most of the time, and supervised them closely when he couldn't be here. He always kept us updated on their progress. They demolished the old deck section by section, including removing the old cement footings, supporting structure, and the rotten wood next to the house where the old deck hadn't been properly flashed. Then they brought in large support beams for the roof of the screened porch as they took it out. All debris was removed from our property. Bob and his pleasant crew consulted us often on details, including the height and width of the new stairs, type of porch door, dimensions of the pet stairs, and color of the door hardware. The ceiling of the old screened porch was solid brown and the old seams hadn't even been covered. The newly-painted one has beams and is white and brown to match our Tudor house. Much of the expense of the project comes from the Trex, but we would do it again. I am so delighted with the wood-like colors that match the house, and no more staining, splinters, or replacing of rotten boards. We have a great warranty also. I have been in this area since 1974, and Bob is one of the very best contractors I have worked with. He is very conscientious and honest. He owns his own company, and he goes over and above what is expected to be sure you are happy. He didn't ask for any money until the project was finished, and we were completely satisfied. We love our deck!
Description of Work: Total demolition and rebuilding of 30-year old wood deck and screened porch (except roof). Replacement with top grade of Trex decking and rail system with black aluminum balusters. Additional custom pet steps, partial pet screen and lattice, ADA compliant additional back stair railing (for children), planing 3 interior doors, painting wooden screened porch with added ceiling detail, removal and installation of 3 new light fixtures that I bought.

The work started several weeks late due to an injury to one of his crew. The demolition went very well, as did the repair to the face-plate. Absolute efficiency to this point! From this point on, there were delays because of mistakes in the order placed for the TREX decking for the rear deck and the front porch. The deck and front porch look great.HOW EVER...When building the frame for the deck, care was not taken to make sure that all of the support timbers were all at the exact same hight. When it rains, there are three lines of water where the water pools across ten to fifteen to fifteen deck boards. This is a sure sign of uneven support timbers. The problem can not be easily fixed once the deck is finished and is not noticeable when it is dry, but is just a sign of a job being hurried just a little too much. Over-all workmanship is good to very good. Bob has some good people working for him.
Description of Work: Demolition of existing deck and replacement with TREX manufactured product. Remove and replace front porch railings with TREX products. Upon demolition of rear deck, it was found I had severe rotting of the face-plate. This problem was also repaired quickly and well.

We got three estimates for rebuilding our deck and back stairs. Bob's was the best price and best design. He came with a photo album to look through on his first visit and we talked through several ideas. He gave us a written estimate which was very detailed. We first called him early in the summer when he was very busy, but he still came out promptly and on the weekend to accomodate our schedule. He gave us an accurate time frame for the start of the project and kept to that schedule. He was a good communicator as the start date got closer and throughout the project. Bob works side by side with his small crew and is very available to answer questions. I cannot say enough about how beautiful our deck and stairs look. We used black aluminum pickets which I had never seen until I looked at his designs. It is stunning. The wood is top quality and the finishing is outstanding. He is a fine craftsman. The deck was installed two days ago and I cannot stop commenting on how fantastic it looks. I am a perfectionist and typically disatisfied with the quality of workmanship in our area. But Bob is the exception. I am completely delighted with his work and hope that he will rebuild our front steps and porch as well. Don't look anywhere else--this is the guy to do your deck project!!

Decks By All Means did a great job on our sunroom. From the first meeting with Bob Means to our last (just this morning) it has been a good experience. He listened to our requests and vision for our sunroom and implemented them accordingly. Several times I called or emailed to communicate with him and he responded back in a timely manner. Whenever weather or crew illness interrupted construction, Bob usually called to let us know when to expect them back on site. In addition to using his own crew, he utilized separate subcontractors for drywall, painting, flooring and electrical work. All subcontractors were courteous and professional. Our sunroom is beautiful and we are thrilled with it. We expect to get many years of enjoyment from it. This experience met our expectations and I would not hesitate to use Bob again in the future.

MY DECK IS AWESOME and I owe it all to Decks by All Means. We needed a deck on a challenging site and Bob and his team came through for us. They approached the problem creatively while being sensitive to our needs and our budget. The team was professional, courteous, thorough and talented. When weather interrupted work, Bob always communicated the status of our project so we never felt like we were forgotten. The finished deck is beautiful and sturdy - it looks better than I could have imagined it. Even now, months later I find myself noticing small, thoughtful details in how the deck constructed. Bob knows how a deck is supposed to go together! He is the man to call.

I picked this contractor based on their excellent ratings on Angie's List. I will never use them again, and I now question the usefulness of the ratings on Angie's List. Here's a brief summary of the problems we encountered with this contractor: Without asking us, they backed their truck across our natural area to save a few steps in carting off the old deck boards. In the process they rammed one of our beautiful oak trees, taking a basketball sized chunk out of its bark. Hopefully the tree will survive, only time will tell. They then proceeded to cut some serious ruts through our natural area (it had recently rained) as they took another route with their truck. When I later confronted the contractor (I wasn't home at the time), they blamed it on the lumber delivery driver (not his crew). So happens my wife snapped a picture of his crew making the mess. We've spent hours since trying to repair the natural area, but its still a mess. The quoted job included the replacement of two sets of steps, but they left without doing the second set. After pointing this out to the contractor, the crew showed up a few days later and hacked out a quick set of stairs. But the railing and posts were installed wrong, so they had to come back a third time to replace them. All in all not a fun experience.

After reading this report, I was very concerned with this assessment of our work. I met with the owner personally and walked the job with him and reviewed each issue: 1) The owner stated that he did not give me a "D" on quality and that the grade is not his assessment; 2) He paid me in full for this job and actually asked me to do a second job on his porch; 3) Regarding his natural area, my crew raked the leaves out of this area to smooth out any uneven ground and replaced the leaves to leave the area as it was originally found. Decks by All Means takes these reviews very seriously and as members can read, all of my other reviews have received an "A" status. It is unfortunate that this member chose to leave this negative review and furthermore doubts the value of Angie's List as a resource.

Bob was very responsive to emails and phone calls, even though it's a very busy time of year for this kind of work. Worked with us closely to make sure the plan fit our expectations and looked good. Took only a few days to complete work (with interruptions only due to waiting on inspections). Deck looks fantastic, works with house and yard exactly as we had hoped. Overall experience exceeded our expectations.
