My husband changed the innards of 2 toilets, the only problem being that on one of them the joint between the water line and the toilet leaked. He was going to replace the pipes on both, but couldn't get the valve disconnected so we called Peter and he fixed everything without need for replacing parts except for corroded escutcheons. Plus Peter adjusted pressure from the well, which we did not know about before he came. Very good experience.
Description of Work: Dealt with toilet supplies, adjusting both to get correct level, fixed valve and connections on one toilet, installed escutcheons, adjusted water pressure switch.

These folks have a well which has a pressure switch, a mechanical device which does require adjustment. Of course, the pressure gauge was not functioning. The solution was to put a pressure gauge on the drain valve and adjust to the normal range. It would be good to drain the system and install a new pressure switch and pressure gauge, an operation that may happen in the future if they so desire. The goal is to resolve the issue here and now and inform the customer about a permanent solution if they want to go further.

Peter Johnson did not do the work himself; he subcontracted it out to someone else. The guy was very nice, very friendly but he had to return to the house three times before everything was right. I probably wouldn't go back with them again. The guy was so nice, it made up for a lot of the other trouble that we had.
Description of Work: I used the Angie's list big deal from Peter Johnson Plumbing for them to put in the toilet.

My wife and I bought a big time fixer upper less than a year ago. It required entirely new systems throughout the house including plumbing, Peter Johnson was recommended to me of a friend of mine who was a plumber himself (always a good sign). I took this insider advice and it was one of the best project decisions I have made. As I was doing much of the renovation work myself and was on site all day everyday, I had a unique perspective of coming to know him as a co-worker. Over a span of a couple of months, the entire plumbing system on our house was totally re-worked and replaced. 2 full bathrooms, kitchen and painting studio. The insight and perspectives he brought to the project with his 50 plus years of job experience (to say nothing of his Harvard educated mind) served me exceptionally well, from the complexities of the overall system design, down to the smallest details. I found him to be always good humored, extremely hard working, and knowledgeable about all aspects of construction and how they relate to one another. I emerged from the chaos of that period with a well conceived system of excellent construction and having gained a friend. I would wholeheartedly recommend Peter Johnson to anyone in need of an expert plumber

I met Peter on a construction project I was working on and asked him if he would take a look at my faucet. He came out on schedule and gave me an estimate and a time he could do the work. He arrived on time and repaired the faucet and did a very good professional job.
Description of Work: Peter replaced a broken outdoor faucet which was leaking inside the wall when the faucet was turned on. Peter had the proper heating torch (acetylene) to install new lines without burning wood studs..

The first step was to hook up one toilet and one sink for the army of people who were working at the house for several months. The vandals had left a disembodied kitchen sink on the family room floor. Peter mounted it in a temporary frame in the powder room and connected it with flexible tubing. To the immense relief of all concerned, he also hooked up the toilet. He then focused on all the gas lines which had been cut off flush to the wall or floor. When he had fixed those, he ran pressure tests, and called for an inspection. That went smoothly because he had done the work well and had the foresight to leave the drywall open wherever there were gas connections. He then went thru a similar process with all the water systems. Once that was completed and the cabinets had been installed, he began hooking up all the appliances and fixtures. After they were all connected, a final round of testing and inspections, During this months long process, Peter made two errors that he fixed within one day at no charge. I am confident that my daughter has moved into a house where things work and have been configured for convenience and safety. Subseqently, I engaged Peter to do several projects for me at my home in Biltmore Lake and I am pleased with how they have gone, also. In a project as long and complex as this one, good communications is essentia, particularly when dealing with a know-nothing amateur such as me. Peter communicates frequently and promptly by text and emails, which makes things go much more smoothly.
Description of Work: I engaged Peter to do all the plumbing on a house I was re-habbing for my daughter and her family. It was a short sale and during the nine months it had been vacant, it had been brutally vandalized - all the sinks, appliances, and propane fireplaces torn out of the walls, copper plumbing stolen, etc. On top of that, the previous owners had either done much of the work themselves or hired the cheapest guy they could find. The workmanship was shoddy and when it was up to code, it appeared to be more by accident than by design. The damage was so extensive we had no idea what would work and what wouldn't when we hooked up everything. Broadly speaking, I hired Peter to fix everything involving water and gas systems. During the process, I encouraged him to tell me what best practice would be whenever there was a choice between cheap and good..

All of the members were a joy to work with, always able to accept the silliness of the situation of this quite nice house that had so many issues, especially after the severe vandalism that happened during the vacancy. Apparently, the previous owner did much of the work on the house, and the results were outside code which the appraiser confirmed. In the end, the money spent to restore the house to code did not go beyond the value of the house, and, even so, their acceptance and perseverance toward a proper outcome allowed for a result within my comfort zone. Tom's mention of not using me to redo a house for flipping is quite apt. I am not interested in doing the cheapest and fastest job for profit, passing along problems to be addressed in the future. The goal is to have installations that stand the test of time, and after 50 years in the field, it seems to be so. I feel satisfied that the members will have no issues, and if they do, they will be corrected as my work has a lifetime guarantee, my lifetime, hopefully another 20 or so.

Peter accurately diagnosed our hot water heater that wasn't heating properly. I had another plumber say the hot water heater was shot and had to be replaced. It is an expensive power vent type unit. Peter said there was a good chance it could be dismantled and cleaned and that it might be repairable. We went that route. He took the hwh apart and cleaned it all up, and put it back together. It is working perfectly again! I think Peter is a great plumber, and helped our family as we are struggling with finances lately.

It is surprising James had a few providers look at the water heater, and none of them could see the obstructed flue riser in the tank which was apparent after a few minutes of inspection. These jobs are the most fun after the homeowner is facing replacing the water heater on New Year's weekend, no hot water in the house, and after a few operations, the water heater is back functioning with no CO registering on the monitor. The goal is about getting the most for the least. James helped me do the grunting of lowering the tank and had it drained when I arrived, later than anticipated, and it was accomplished by 5 PM Sat, 12/29. I like this type of job and the result.

I think this service was average at best.
Description of Work: Plumber was very nice and friendly. We had minor things to repair : an improperly flushing toilet and overflow valve on hot water heater. Both done but he opened the insulating jacket in the hot water heater and did not bother to seal it back up. For some reason an outside hose was unhooked, sounds picky but it is really hard to reattach this hose, when I asked him to please put it back he stated he did not want to do this as he was on the clock. He was very interested in providing an estimate to replace my perfectly functioning hot water heater. I will say I did express mild interest in an on demand unit.

I am sorry this member was not satisfied after this service call. Steve Heflin and I work together to respond to our service calls, and he is mentioned in several of the reports. He is not an employee. We are associates. We strive to be responsive and considerate of our customers. Steve dealt with this service call. The report is submitted Dec 29 for a service call on July 18th, several service calls ago, 5 months of time. It would be good if members can be timely in their reviews as the memory trace of these short calls fades. Steve's recollection of the events does not agree with member's description. He called her and apologized for whatever he did that did not please her. It's possible there have been before and since other service folks who have been there confusing the issue. We strive to provide the best of service and installation. Many of the reports acknowledge the level we strive to provide. We are sorry this member was not satisfied. She was not over-billed. We ask for reasonable recompense for what we do and stand behind our work. Our customers have maintenance people who follow-up with final details like replacing drywall, insulating water heaters, insulating pipes, etc. as it is not cost effective for the customer to have us do these operations which are not plumbing operations. Often, we are on a job and get calls to deal with an urgent issue for another customer, no hot water, no water at all, no drainage, no toilet, etc., and our schedule changes in a moment, and such a sequence may have happened with member. Steven and I are both quite experienced, about 90 years total, and both of us are sorry this member was not satisfied. Respectfully Submitted, Peter Johnson”

I purchased the "Big Deal" from Peter Johnson plumbing and quickly used it to have new shower fixtures put it. The big deal was for an estimate and 2 hours of labor, a great deal! Peter returned my call that I had made to schedule the estimate within a day and asked me what I planned on doing. I let him know about my desire to install new shower fixtures and he let me know he would send over another guy who contracted for him to check it out. When that gentleman arrived to give me the estimate he suggested that if I wanted to save some money, which I did, to cut out the drywall behind the shower myself so all he had to do was install the fixtures and save time. The gentleman arrived on time to install my fixtures and he installed them in two hour. A great deal! Here is where the issues arose. After leaving I noticed that one of the connections was leaking a bit. I called to ask him to return to fix it. The next day he came back to fix the problem. Again, later that day it was leaking again. So the next he came back to fix it only this time he was clearly frustrated and rushed, barreling through the house in an obvious attempt to fix it as fast as possible and be done with it. Considering this was the second time he was back to fix the problem I expected him to be less hurried and more attentive to the lingering problem. He fixed the leak. I was also disappointed at the use of "shark bites" on the pipes, a cheap and less reliable way to connect pipes. These can spring leaks or be blown off by pressure with some ease compared to the alternative. Plus, he didn't even fully caulk the new fixtures, something I had to do myself after he left. The price was right for the job done. Really an incredible deal for only $100. I was just disappointed at the lack of quality of some parts used and the fact that it took two extra trips to stop a small leak. At the end of the day it was a great deal.

I was very satisfied. When I called him, he said he would be here in about an hour. He called about a half hour later and said he had to vote (it was election day). I encouraged him to do so. He called a short while later to let me know he was finished voting and he would be on his way. He went right to work and finished in a short time. We have not had any problem since. This is the second time I have used his services and if I have need of a plumber in the future, I will call him.

I am sorry my response was not timely. Her issues did not seem urgent, and perhaps I misunderstood. In addition to our normal load, 25 of the coupons were sold, and Steve and I are doing our best to respond to the requests. I will try harder and avoid this type of outcome. Scheduling is tricky as a seemingly simple one-hour job can end up lasting even a couple days after unanticipated discoveries which need resolution to guarantee a final fix for situations that have been a problem sometimes for years.

Bought the Big Deal in the morning, and called Peter after I received the confirmation email. He dropped by between other calls in my South Asheville neighborhood that afternoon. Best plumbing experience ever.
Description of Work: Peter fixed our shower in under an hour -- replaced a shower head and tightened a loose plumbing fixture that had bothered us for some time. On April 13th Peter Johnson spent most of the day attempting to fix the problem. He said that the leak was fixed by adjusting the flange and he charged $399.00 including $14.00 for materials. Mr. Johnson said that he was charging us a flat fee rather than his usual $75 per hour. Since during the following week the toilet failed to flush fecal matter three times without excessive plunging, I contacted Mr. Johnson who returned on 5-2-12 to address the problem. When he corrected the toilet to flush properly, the original leak reappeared. After a lot of diagnostic effort, Mr. Johnson determined that he would have to install some new makeshift flooring which he did. He changed the flange and the leak ended. He worked part of each day on May 2, 3, and 4. Whether a warranty for the previous work was in effect or, if not, what his charge would be for work subsequent to the original job was not discussed until in the middle of the day on May 4th when Mr. Johnson said that he would again charge a flat rate. At the end of that day when the work was completed, he asked if $350 for labor to be paid immediately plus whatever the cost of the materials which he would total up and email the amount to me to be paid upon receipt. I agreed and wrote a check for the $350. On the check I wrote that it was payment for labor. Mr. Johnson was pretty sloppy with his placement of tools which resulted in a hole in the cork flooring in the basement. I informed him about the hole and asked him if he had a remedy. He returned on May 10th. After looking at the hole, he said that he would get a contractor friend of his to get a flooring expert to address the matter. He then got out a piece of paper on which he had written that we still owed him $582, $48 of which was for materials. He said that he didn't expect the whole amount, but that the $350 previously paid was only a down payment. Since it was clear to me that it was the entire payment for the labor, I became rather upset. Johnson kept saying that I had an incorrect understanding. To finish off the confrontation, I finally wrote a check for $100, which he said was more than generous(?) I can only surmise that he felt that he had been giving us a price break and that if we were going to hold him responsible for the hole in fhe floor, then he was going to start playing hard ball. To date, the leak has not resumed, nor has Mr. Johnson done anything about the hole in the floor. .
Description of Work: A toilet was leaking from the main floor into the basement. This leak had been occuring intermittently for the almost six years that we have lived in this house. Previous plumbers had failed to fix the problem. Peter Johnson ultimately had to install some new boards through the basement ceiling to which the toilet was attached. Mr. Johnson did a lot of work and he clearly knows what he is doing. A plumber who listens to classical music while he works represents a welcome anomaly. Everything concerning this repair was fine except for the end which is explicated below.

I had an old leaky water pump that would not build up enough pressure to cut itself off, so it kept running. I needed to get the problem sorted out immediately as I had the house up for sale and it was set to close in a couple of days. I had called another plumber earlier in the week, but he was unable to troubleshoot the issue and left me in the lurch. In desperation, I signed up for angie's list, found a few A-rated plumbers and made some phone calls. Peter called me back a couple of hours later and within 5 minutes of talking with him, it was obvious that he knew his business, and seemed genuinely interested in the issue at hand. He asked me a lot of questions, trying to get as much info as possible before he even arrived at the house. He came out the next day, quickly assessed the situation, and then advised me of the best course of action. I decided to replace the entire pump as it would have taken too long to get repair parts for the existing pump, which may not have solved the issue completely. Peter gave me an estimate on a pump and labor, and then set out to purchase parts. Fast forward a few hours later, and he has replaced the pump and also the water shutoff valve which was old and slightly leaky as well. The final bill was just a tad more than the original estimate, but only because I decided to put in the shutoff valve after he started. The price was very fair for the quality and speed of work. Peter did a fantastic job, was respectful of my time and money, and I would definitely call him again.

Steve was very friendly and professional. He told us he had another appointment at 9:30 that should not take long and he could make it by late morning. He called to let us know when he completed the other job and said he be there in 15 to 20 min. When he arrived he it took him a short time to find the problem and fix it. Peter and Steve are very honest men who care about their customers. I called All Pro about a year or two ago and they charged me $110 for fifteen min. and never found the problem. Steve found my problem and fixed it. He told me the problem and showed it to me then asked if I wanted to have him fix it. He very professional thing to do. He only charged me $75 for the repair. A very fair price. Peter and Steve are two very honest and trustworthy men. It is hard to find professionals that really care about their customers and look to do the right thing instead of seeing how much money they can make. I will always us Peter Johnson and/or Steve Heflin. Steve told me to call if anymore problems arise and he would be back to take care of it. Thanks for a job well done.
Description of Work: I had water in my storage area of my basement. I had to turn the water off the night before. I called Peter and he was in the middle of another job but he knew we needed water. Instead of telling us he could not get to us until tomorrow, Peter has a buddy in the plumbing business and he see if he was available. He called me back in five minutes and said Steve Heflin was able to come out and that he highly recommends him. Peter also told me that if Steve could not have made it he would of rearranged his schedule and would come out to fix it. We agreed to have Steve come in Peter's place.

Peter returned my calls promptly, but when I discovered his work was faulty he was not cooperative in remedying the situation. I was not impressed with his professionalism, communication skills, or attention to detail. He began work without my consent and without discussion of his fees. He did not clean up after he completed the work, and left marks inside the cast iron tub where he had dropped the drain (the second plumber I hired put down a rag to prevent any damage to the finish). After the second plumber re-did the work I was left wondering whether Peter simply didn't know what he was doing, or was trying to extend the process to get more money out of the job. Either way I can't recommend him to other homeowners.
Description of Work: I called to request help with some simple repairs (running toilet and dripping faucet) and Peter noticed that there was a leak in the waste and overflow pipe of the tub. He removed the drain and used caulk to seal and replace. He then told me I couldn't use the shower for at least a day. I would have appreciated if we had discussed this before he went ahead and started the work. A few days later I discovered that the pipe was still leaking, but he wasn't able to come back until the next day, and did not agree to credit the amount I had already paid for the faulty repair. I hired another plumber, who quickly recognized that a gasket was missing and re-sealed the drain with putty (he said caulk should never have been used for this repair). This plumber also quoted an up-front flat fee and offered a warranty on the repair - two things that Peter did not do.

The tub drain in this cast iron tub was cracked and had to be sealed with silicone which requires time to set. It had been leaking for quite awhile and the customer did not notice. I showed her the problem as soon as I noticed it and told her what it needed. I reset the drain and told her to get back to me when it set. She seemed fine with that arrangement. Apparently the tub was moved away from the wall for painting which compromised the drain, a factor she did not tell me until after the setting of the drain. When she called back, I was in the middle of a situation with the water turned off, and I never leave a job with the water turned off. I told her I could come the next day, and she was in a press to get out of town. Apparently there was another leak in the drain which I would have corrected the next day, but she was in a rush to leave town which is understandable. I am sorry I could not followup in her time frame. I try to do the best I can for my customers. In this case, we did discuss everything that needed to be done at the time, and I did that.

He had trouble finding our home. He eventually found our home. His work van was very dated and looked very unprofessional. He didn't know what to do with my problem. I ended up actually doing it myself.

I I would disagree about my knowing what to do with their leaking shower drain which is completely the wrong drain installed by the original contractor who apparently died in the construction process. I told him exactly what to do about it as a "Rube Golberg" fix, the best we could at this time rather than go into major surgery, installing a drain after the fact, a complicated operation, upside down and backwads, and then see if it works. Apparently he did exactrly what I told him to do, which he was interested in doing, and now there is no problem for the time being as he related on the phone. I'm into doing the minimal amount of work and seeing if it works with an incorrect installation. His wife said he was having a difficult day, and perhaps this negative report vented his frustration.

Please see detailed explanation above.
Description of Work: I called Peter after reading the fact the majority of his reviews were excellent. My experience, however, was not excellent. I had a rental house with a faulty hot water heater. I called Peter to see if he wanted the job. He got in contact with the tenant and went to the house. The previous water heater was a small, older unit under the kitchen sink. It also appeared it could not be fixed and I needed to replace the water heater. Peter told me the quickest, easiest and least expensive way to fix the situation was to place the new hot water heater in the unfinished basement and just route the extra piping. So far, so good. I agreed, but did not ask for an estimate (big mistake). I've had three other hot water heaters replaced in the last two to three years; two electric and one gas. The cost for the electric heaters was just under $600 for each, including the hot water heater AND the labor to install it. Therefore, with the extra pipe to connect to the new location, I was expecting to pay another hour or two of labor - maybe $100 to $150. The day after we agreed that Peter would do the job, he called me at home and asked me to purchase the hot water heater. I thought that was a bit odd, thinking the plumber would handle it, but I went to Lowe's and purchased the hot water heater. I also had to arrange for delivery for an extra $59 - apparently Peter wasn't able to pick up the water heater enroute to the job. The water heater was to be delivered Tuesday morning. I had to go out of town on a business trip. On Tuesday evening I got a message from Peter saying that he was unable to start the job on Tuesday because the hot water heater was not delivered until the afternoon. And, he forgot to tell me I needed to run electricity so he could hook up the hot water heater (it was Tuesday evening and I was out of town and he wanted this done on Wednesday). I was with colleagues and could not call him back but I texted I could not arrange an electrician at such short notice. He left me another message stating the electrical work was not complicated and he could handle it himself. By this point I was really having some concern about his ability to complete the job. On Friday he called and said the job was complete and he wanted to bring the invoice to my office so he could be paid immediately. I was in and out of the office so I asked him to e-mail or fax the invoice, which he eventually did. Again, I was expecting a "normal" installation fee of $250 or so, with another $100 to $150 for relocating the hot water heater to the basement. I already paid the $380 for the hot water heater, expansion tank and When I saw the invoice total of $900 for labor only, I was really surprised. I wrote Peter a message explaining my concern. His response was basically, "I care about a satisfied customer, but that's what I'm charging you." After this response I contacted the tenant, who assisted Peter with the work. Peter even mentioned how helpful he was. The tenant, who works construction jobs (he's not a plumber) couldn't believe it took Peter 11 hours to do the job, or that he charged me $900. When I asked Peter to reconsider the cost of his labor for this job, he again stuck to his guns. I explained to him I felt it was incumbent on him to clue me in his labor charge would be nearly three times the normal for a regular installation, especially since he implied it was an easy thing to put the hot water heater in the basement. I also told him I felt I had to post my experience on Angie's List, and he asked me not to do that because it could hurt his business. I told him I would state only my perspective of how this all happened, and I would also make sure to state I am not questioning the quality of what he did - the hot water heater was just installed, and the tenant says it is functioning. My overall suggestion is if you decide to use this plumber, make sure you get an estimate beforehand so you are not unpleasantly surprised.

My work is of a high caliber. I do work that will last a long time, and over several years, my concern for detail has benefited my customers. This member was out of town; so there was no chance to go over the options. The existing water heater was installed and the kichen cabinet built around it so there was no way to get it out of there without cutting it in half, and then, how would we get a new one in there? The only logical solution was to relocate the water heater in the basement which required re-piping the water heater and redoing the piping in the kitchen sink. The basement floor is dirt; so the new water heater had to be put on cinderblocks, leveling the floor, etc. He mentions his tenant who did help, a young fellow, 26, who would not have a good sense of what this work costs. He was there the whole time; so he can attest to how much time was required. It has happened in the past that young men do not understand why a master plumber with 50 years in the business would be paid more than they are. I would like to clarify the charges stated in the report. The $900 charge the member mistakenly attributed to labor also included material costs; all tubing and wiring and fittings, adapters, etc... to accomplish the installation ($147, 25' of 10/2 w grnd wire, 50' of 3/4 pex tube). The labor was more intensive and required about 4 times the work to simply install a water heater. I'm sorry this member was not there to witness what was done as his situation required additional time and effort to ensure a first-class install which will be easy to service in the future.
