A deal was purchased for hourly labor. We made several attempts to make contact outside of angie's list that were to no avail. The deal was subsequently refunded by the customer through angie's list. We never had any success contacting the customer.

We always inform the customer of any possible charges before any work is started. In the case of the $75 ceiling fan deal this only covers installation of the fan on an existing fan rated box. Fan rated boxes are necessary for a safe fan installation and do require an extra charge as stated in the deal details. At GEC we never want a client to be surprised with their bill once work has been completed.

Description of Work: I purchased a big deal for $75 to have a ceiling fan installed. They tried to charge me an extra $250, claiming it would cost that must extra since there wasn't a fan already there. It was not stated anywhere on the deal that the type of installation would require an extra fee. After I told him that he didn't even bother to come out and look to give me an accurate estimate.

Response from General Electrical Contracting
The home in which the fan was to be installed was pre 1970s, and had no existing fixture or wiring on the ceiling to connect a ceiling fan to. The deal states in the details that a box can be installed for an additional fee. To even begin to install the fan, power would have to be located and new wiring ran to the location of the fan. Switch wiring would also need to be ran through the wall. We wanted to be up front as concerns about cost were made and we could not be expected to rewire the home to install the fan for the purchase made without extra cost. Customer was advised to obtain a refund for their purchase as it was made clear no additional cost would be acceptable.

The deal for $50 off a service call was purchased on august 25, after initial contact we were scheduled to trouble shoot a bath heater/light combo, on September 4th. On the 4th we arrived on schedule and took down the unit, we were informed that the light still worked but the heater had stopped working. We contacted the manufacturer, whom informed us that this style of fixture had been discontinued over eight years earlier and that replacement parts were no longer available. We offered to find new fixture that was comparable but were instructed to reinstall the light not to worry with replacing it. We did honored the coupon that you purchased for $50 off, and i gave an additional discount on the total since the heater was unrepairable. When we left the light functioned as it did when we arrived and the customer was happy and had us walk though her kitchen to look at a future kitchen remodel. It has been almost two months and we have still not received payment for the time spent.

Sent General Electrical Contracting a message the next morning, David called told him what the problem was and what I thought the cause was. We discussed price as normal, set up a day and time which worked best for me (Saturday). On Friday evening David called to verify time on Saturday morning all was a go. Saturday morning about 1 hour befor time David called with truck trouble, and said he would call when he got up and running. This was no problem because he called before he was scheduled. (Real professionalism because not many would have called before time, and would have waited till after time to call and inform of any tardiness.) About an hour later David called back to say he got the truck fixed and was I still willing to have him come out to do the job. We live 30 minutes out of town, I told him yes please. When David got here we talked about our options while he checked the outlet. He started out looking in the breaker boxes, yes boxes as we have a generator transfer switch. The outlet had its own circuit so he followed the wire down to the main breaker box then found the neutral wire followed it and bingo it was a loose neutral wire going from main box to transfer switch box. We were up and running in an hour start to finish. Thank you David for working with me on my schedule.

(Member name) thank you for your input. We are sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with the cost for the work we preformed. Our clients happiness is of the highest importance to us. The Angie's list coupon you purchased can be a little confusing, so let me try and clarify how this offer worked in your case. You purchased the $225 for four total hours of electrical labor. Your job required a two man crew to complete and as the offer specified it was good for four hours for one man and two hours for two men (which would be four total labor hours). The total labor for your job came to four hours from which I subtracted one half hour because my helper had to go to the supply house for some additional materials. So you were billed for 3.5 hours minus the two hours purchased via Angie's list, which came to a total of 1.5 hours at our regular rate. I hope that this helps in some way to clarify the situation, as this was a very confusing promotion for us as well. We would also like to offer you 10% off of any future job for the misunderstanding, as i stated before your happiness is of utmost importance to us here at General Electrical Contracting. If you have any further questions or concerns you can reach me personally at 828-989-6604.

Jules was great! He was punctual and even worked on the occasional Saturday to meet deadlines. He was very professional and worked well with the other sub contractors onsite. Jules made sure that everything was done right and if something was giving him an issue he did not leave until it was working properly. I would definitely use him again. I was very pleased with my experience and felt that the quote was lower than other electricians we interviewed.

We had purchased our 1920's era home and were still in process of moving from South Carolina when we hired General Electrical. I think Jules' schedule was tight and he took the work as a favor to our realtor. Due to fact that the knob-and-tube runs in the attic were buried in insulation (a definite no-no), he said early on he would not touch the knob-and-tube unless the insulation were gone. We could not do that right away because it was already late fall and getting colder and needed to keep the insulation in place until spring. Also, the house had a few generations of wiring from its previous use as a boarding house with the basement at one time configured into two apartments. That being said, we still were not pleased with the result. For new outlets that were added, Jules wired grounded three-prong outlets to the new circuit panel via romex. However, in many cases for existing outlets he only ran new romex from the panel to a junction box which was still getting power from the knob-and-tube circuit, with the wires to the electrical outlets still the old cloth covered and in many cases unsafe wiring. We had agreed to leave some outlets as ungrounded two-prong where the only thing that would be plugged in would be a lamp. However, because he replaced several of the old two-prong outlets with new two-prong outlets, we thought he would have alerted us to unsafe wiring with frayed insulation. And considering everything was accessible via the full basement, we fully expected the wall outlets to have dedicated circuits to the new electrical panel and not still be tied into the knob-and-tube. The agreement was that the knob-and-tube would be left to run the overhead lights only, and the process of getting the knob-and-tube replaced would happen as a separate job. Now, we have another electrician replacing the knob-and-tube, and he has been surprised at how many things were still left connected to it. And of course this has necessitated him redoing a bunch of work. Two final notes: General Electrical still owes us for an outlet that was not working properly and never followed up to fix it. But after a while we gave up and decided to just wait and let the next electrician fix it. The other thing is that after the power company connected the new meter and connection from the street to the new weather-head, neither power company nor Jules bothered to disconnect the old meter. This meant a meter box with no meter in it and a live circuit with two metal contacts ready for a curious child to stick a hand in it and get a deadly shock. Fortunately, the other electric company we hired discovered this when we had them in to put in a new 220v circuit for an electric dryer, and they fixed it gratis. I think Jules was pressed for time, and a bit overwhelmed with dealing with an old house. We are guessing he might work more on new construction projects. However, we could not recommend him.
Description of Work: Update electrical service from 60 amp to 200 amp. Replace fuse box with modern breaker panel. Install new weather-head. Add outlets in various rooms, update wiring to existing outlets.
