Description of Work: When I decided to replace my ailing 11-year-old HVAC system, I contacted this company because of the glowing reviews on Angie's List. The woman who answered the phone set up an appointment for someone to come out the following week to give me a quote. She also asked if anyone else would be with me at the time of the appointment. I thought this question was very odd, and it raised a little red flag. I inquired about the 5% senior discount offered on their Angie's List page (every company has its own age definition of "senior" so I wanted to see if I qualified for that). She said she didn't know anything about such a discount, and would ask the salesperson about it. The salesman arrived close to the appointed time. He seemed polite, professional, personable, and knowledgable. I expected him to look at my current system first, but he wanted to present some information before doing so. So we sat at the kitchen table; I listened while he gave his practiced sales pitch, presented a large book with info about the company, their services, guarantees, etc., along with pages and pages of glowing letters they had received from satisfied customers. He seemed to expect me to go through and read them; I explained that I had called because of the great reviews I read on Angie's List and didn't need to look through the book. Then there were multiple choice questions that seemed ridiculous -- for example, "What do you want in a system" with choices such as reliable, or quiet, or efficient..." etc. -- the answer to every question was really "all of the above" -- but I had to pick just one response for each. It was silly and time-wasting. I mentioned that I would probably finance this project; he asked how much per month I was comfortable paying. (This is a scam often used by car salesmen.) I responded that I would take care of financing on my own. After an hour, he FINALLY looked at my existing A/C system, and back to the kitchen table we went. He scrawled some notes and drawings on paper, and eventually wrote a dollar amount on the page, which I had to read upside-down from across the table. My response that this price was over my budget, and had expected to spend around $xxx. (I had already gotten a quote from another company with the traditional 'good-better-best' options, and had an idea of price range). So we had more conversation, he made more notes on the paper, and he threw out another number, which was still over budget. Note that I STILL had not seen an actual quote -- just numbers. I expected to see specs, manufacturer and type of equipment, etc., like every other company presents. (After owning 5 homes and getting quotes for just about every type of contracted work, I knew what a typical estimate looked like, and this guy wasn't forthcoming with the info.) He had not addressed the senior discount that I asked about, or any dealer incentives, etc., so I inquired about those and asked about adjustments to the price. He hemmed and hawed and said well, maybe he could do this, or that, blah, blah. What happened next was appalling. He got "the boss" on the phone, then put me on the line with "the boss," who proceeded to say this was a good price and it was only good for today, that I had to decide that evening or they wouldn't honor it. He was rude and belligerent. I've never heard of a reputable company not allowing reasonable time to make a decision on a major purchase. And I still hadn't seen a quote to review! The appointment ended with me being upset and feeling that I'd wasted over two hours of my time. I am an intelligent, professional businesswoman, and have had enough experience with contractors to know when they are being upfront, to the point and professional. There was no need for for this seemingly endless sales pitch that resembled techniques used by con artists. It was disappointing and unsettling to have a bad experience with a company so highly rated on Angie's and which also has a Super Service Award rating. Perhaps this type of aggressive sales technique is something they recently implemented to boost their business; if so, I hope they rethink that. I am glad others have had good experiences with 72 Degrees, but would advise consumers to check out other companies before calling this one. And Angie's -- please consider revising this company's rating.
