IT'S JUST AS IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT UNRELIABLE TIME-WASTERS AS IT IS TO KNOW ABOUT WHO PERFORMS GOOD VERSUS POOR WORK. I would therefore encourage other customers to report no-shows on Angie's List. This vendor wasted my time and money even tho' I did not wind up hiring him. THIS VENDOR IS UNRELIABLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL. I WOULD ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO KEEP LOOKING. I contacted this provider during the week of April 28th and scheduled an appointment for him to come to my house and provide an estimate on Friday, May 2nd, between 8-10am. On Thursday, May 1st he contacted my son to reschedule. This was disappointing and inconvenient because we had made a point of scheduling three A/C vendors spaced out on the same day so that we could take one full day off work in order to handle everyone and then make a final decision. Anyway, this particular vendor wanted to reschedule for Monday, May 5th at 11:00am so we agreed. At the appointed time on May 5th my son traveled back from Raleigh to the house in Chapel Hill to meet with the vendor. The vendor did not show up for the rescheduled Monday, May 5th appointment. And we have not heard from him. I would encourage others to bypass this particular company. I would also encourage other customers to report no-shows on Angie's List. It is just as important to know about unreliable time-wasters as it is to know who does good versus poor work. Thank you.

Dearest (Member name removed), Please accept my sincere apologies for missing the second appointment we made, and for rescheduling your initial call. That week brought in the hottest air we have seen this spring and our company was inundated with calls. We have also been transitioning to a new call center and software over the past few weeks, and unfortunately missed a few calls during this time. That said, we are truly sorry to have missed an opportunity to service your system, and are sorry to even have to provide explanations for our lapse in response. Please don't hesitate to call us at 919-777-9777 again as our systems are now up and fully functional, and ask for me personally to make an appointment in the future. I would be happy to provide a discount on our normal diagnostic fee for you, and prove why we are the Triangle's top rated HVAC company on Angie's List! Most Sincerely, Eddie Blanchard Owner & GM of 72 Degrees

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. The service turned out fine. They came on time. He fixed it as much as he could. He said that one of these days I would need a new condenser. He warned me and told me what could happen, and until it happens, I am not going to do anything. I may not have air conditioning and heating for a couple of days, but that is better. I can always call them and I probably will if I need them. He was very punctual. They were not the worst or the best.

Dear (Member name removed), While it is great to hear you felt our technician was punctual, professional, thorough and informative, and that you will call us again to service or replace the system in the future, we are puzzled by your rating here on Angie's List. Please give us a call to chat about why you felt the service was less than A+. We aim to ensure all customers are pleased, and hope to have an opportunity to work with you again soon. The first guy was a young guy, very nice and took his time looking through my system. I can tell it pained him to tell me that my 24 year old system was shot but then he gave me three options, put Freon in it for 500-700 which might last all year or one day, fix the coil for $1500-$2000 which would last but no guarantee the rest of the system would hold up or a complete change out. I figured the only way to go was a change out so the first guy set up an appointment for a project manager to come out the next day. Second guy was really nice as well, he was a little late but he did call in the morning ahead of time to warn me, he went through my system and basically showed me his price book for the most economical unit as he knew I wasn't staying here long. The problem was that he didn't bother to write anything up for me. He showed me his price book and discussed finance options but I didn't get anything in writing from him which to me just didn't sit well. To be honest had he just taken the time to do that I probably would have ended up going with him, but he didn't. He did say he would write something up if I was ready to go so I told him I needed to get other quotes. I did get other quotes and he ended up in the middle, but because the other guy was extremely professional and the guys I eventually went with (Air Experts) were so thorough, had multiple equipment and finance options, and the project manager Dave took his time and gave me a written proposal that I just couldn't even think about giving 72 degrees the business. Sorry, but next time put the deal in writing!

Dear (Remove member name): You are absolutely correct that our Project Manager should have put your purchase options in writing. I'm unsure whether he felt you were in a hurry that day, or whether he wanted you to collect the other options you stated you were seeking from our competitors before providing you with a complete quote, but that IS usually provided every time we come to quote a new HVAC system. We are happy to hear you felt our service technician was professional, informative and thorough! I am also happy you are pleased with the new system you now have. Should you have any issues arise with that system, we would love to send our top notch technicians out to look at it and provide you with an apples to apples diagnosis and quote. Initially, the sales person presented us with a 72 degrees ownership and maintenance program where we would be guaranteed a savings on our power bill with their new system in comparison to the old or the difference in the power bill over a period of time would be refunded back to us. Additionally, they sold us a maintenance program where they would return every 6 months, to perform scheduled maintenance on both our systems which would assure us "top care" for both our systems. I was a little hesitant up front because the cost they quoted was much higher than local competitors but they insisted the "guarantee" proves they used a better system with proven savings in power consumption or money back. I figured if they offered a money back guarantee, how could I go wrong? WELL, IT WAS JUST TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE... The power consumption never improved and they never came back to do the scheduled maintenance as promised. I called twice for the salesperson to follow-up about the energy consumption analysis after waiting about 8 months so a very realistic comparison could be used but got no response either time. We've also experienced a black residue exiting the air vents which circulates back to the intake filter after the new system was installed. After a year, it's gotten better but still shows evidence after a period of time on our white sheer window coverings. They all have to be taken down every three months and professionally cleaned. Lord knows what we've been breathing! The power consumption never improved which was extremely disappointing. LIKE MY CURTAINS, I feel I've been taken to the cleaners by the smooth sales pitch sold to us by 72 Degrees Heating & Air. For the difference of about $1500 I paid over average pricing for the non-existent service and guarantee, I would certainly have been better off staying away from 72 Degrees Heating & Air. I really love Angie's List but as a very valuable lesson I've learned, don't always believe the higher price guy is better for you!

Dear [removed member name], We appreciate your business, and the time you took to provide this rating online. However, it is concerning that your review was less than positive because of the problems we identified while there. Though you report our work was "done fine" you also report it as being average. We certainly hope our technicians were curteous, informative and professional as usual, and that you found the information they provided to be helpful. Our team is trained to identify and present issues that can be easily fixed, and prevent customers from experiencing more costly problems with their HVAC systems in the future. If you feel these issues were improperly diagnosed, I would love to talk with you about this, and send a senior technician in for free to inspect your unit again. Please don't hesitate to call us anytime at 919-777-9777 and ask for me personally should you wish to schedule another appointment. It is our mission to ensure all customers are happy, and we hope to have that opportunity again with your family. Most Sincerely, Eddie Blanchard Owner & GM of 72 Degrees

I called for service early in the morning. They provided me with an appointment the same day. The provider was prompt and courteous. He inspected my unit but did not find anything wrong. The unit had actually started working again later that morning. I paid the service fee and thanked him for his honesty. I will definitely call 72 degrees if I need to have a heater/ AC unit repaired or if I have a question in the future.

Technician arrived on time on the scheduled date and cleaned the AC unit (per an Angie's List Big Deal). He found a capacitor that, while working, wasn't holding adequate charge. He replaced it at my request, saying it would prevent the motor from burning out. He finished the job quickly and neatly.

It went okay, but I wouldn't say great because they tried to replace the whole unit. They said my unit wasn’t that good and wouldn’t work well. They offered a discount for replacing the unit, but I didn’t replace the unit. I didn’t like they way they were trying to persuade me.

Dear [member name removed]: We truly appreciate your business, and are glad you found value in our "Big Deal" online. While it is always difficult to hear that a costly HVAC system needs serious repairs, or even has to be replaced, we honestly stand by that assessment and would love to have an opportunity to service the unit regularly in order to keep it running as efficiently as possible until you are ready to replace it. Please don't hesitate to call us agin for future tune ups and repairs, as we promise to continue to provide top notch service, and important information to you. Thank You! I didn't really care about them. I had a contract with them for a year, I thought they nickeled-and-dimed you to death. They looked for other parts that were borderline to failing and they would always want to replace it and they didn't pick up one of the big problems in our furnace in the basement. It wasn't a functional problem of the furnace, it was the way it was installed. It was actually causing condensation to build up in the furnace because it wasn't level and they didn't notice it. I just wasn't impressed with them. They took advantage of that original offer that you made and used that to get more business.

Dear (Member name removed): We are sorry to hear you were less than satisfied with the work that we did for you over the year of your service contract. It is true that we are thorough each time we service a customer's unit, and our technicians are trained to identify and present any potential HVAC problems in the hopes of providing affordable service prices, and preventing larger more costly issues in the future. We are not a company known for providing dishonest feedback in efforts to maximize our profits, hence the positive ratings online. That said, if we did not identify your furnace's condensation issue downstairs, it may be this wasn't noticeable in the season that we were there. If it was something honestly missed, than I apologize for that miss. We would love to be able to do business with you again, and hope you will consider calling 72 Degrees and giving us an opportunity to provide a competitive inspection and quote the next time an issue arises with you systems. The people who do the service are courteous and helpful. I have not had other repairs on the systems (only two years old), just the service twice a year. I can get that done cheaper.
Description of Work: My downstairs gas furnace installed by 72 Degrees in November 2011 failed. It failed when the outside temps were in the teens and ice and snow were on the roads. The technician was out twenty four hours after the call--understandable given the weather, but I am lucky to have had some backup heating. Once the tech evaluated the need, there was an inducer motor that failed, and the part had to be ordered so that the warranty on the unit would not be compromised by using non-OE parts. I was good with that. I was a little surprised that the part failed so quickly. I had to give the tech a check of $384 to allow him to order the part, although the part was under warranty. In another twenty four hours the tech arrived and installed the part and the unit worked fine and has worked fine since. My concern was that the job took slightly over an hour and I was charged for, basically, three hours labor at $120 per hour, the rate according to the person I spoke with in the office. I was told they use a price book to base charges on. My main complaint is that, even though I bought my systems from them at a little higher price that several other bids, I don't believe that buying from has anything to do with follow up and price advantage. And, I have sent three emails over the past six months and none of them have been answered. I know the address is accurate since I simply replied to their messages. Their website does not make it easy to know whom to contact directly. I will be evaluating my options for continued service on my systems and unless I get a contact from the company, at least to respond to my questions via email, I will have to go elsewhere and recommend the same to my friends and family.

In the end, 72 Degrees made my overall experience a positive one. The salesman was professional and courteous. They were a little higher priced than the competitors, but we liked the project manager and trusted the company. The technicians who installed the system were awesome too. The furnace had a little glitch after a week and the service people responded quickly, even offering to come out late on a Friday night. We told him it could wait until Morning. Anyway, I would rate this an overall positive experience and will continue to use them for maintenance of my system.

Our gas furnace stopped working one night last week. I called 72 Degrees (first time) and they were responsive, getting someone out before noon the next day. - The furnace began running again after about 5-10 minutes. I had no idea what the repair person did. He said that he "jumped" the furnace and that it appeared to be working ok. He said that he didn't know what caused it to stop. The furnace was intermittently not working several days later. I called 72 Degrees again, asked for help and asked that this time we needed an answer about why this was happening - how to prevent it from happening in the future. I was told that I'd get a call back to schedule a visit, but no one called back. Since 72 Degrees didn't call back and we were feeling somewhat under-impressed by them anyway, I called someone else and they came that morning. This person very quickly noticed a few things. 1) The ball bearings in the draft inducer motor were worn out. 2) the problem with the motor causes it to heat up more, and with the recent record frigid weather it would have run a lot and likely overheated. 3) If the motor had overheated, the furnace would pop a rollout fuse and stop running. One of the rollout fuses was missing and had been re-wired. Since the last time anything had actually been done to the furnace was 14 years ago, the inescapable conclusion was that the 72 Degrees person had removed the rollout fuse and re-wired it when he was here last week. Which is apparently a real no-no. - In addition, when the 72 Degrees person was here last week, I'd asked what specifically he had done to start the furnace, and he repeatedly would not elaborate and remained vague with his cryptic "jump" of the furnace. When I pressed (I wanted us to be able to do this) he only said that it would not be safe for us to do this. The other repair person replaced the draft inducer motor assembly, and all seems to be fine now. He said that it was virtually impossible that the rollout fuse had been removed at some other time by someone other than the previous person (72 Degrees). So not only did 72 Degrees make our furnace less safe, they removed the rollout fuse 1) without my permission; 2) without telling me about it; and 3) without replacing it. They also did not notice what the problem was - which was diagnosed quickly by this other person/company. The problem with the motor was even apparent to me, once this person told me that it shouldn't be rattling like it was. And just a note: Before the 72 Degrees guy left, he wanted me to fill out an evaluation sheet, - he said it was for his manager, since his manager wasn't with him. I noticed that the sheet was an evaluation for Angie's List. I didn't write anything in, I really didn't have the time. But later, I wondered if this was how this company has gotten so many reviews.

Hello (Member name removed): I am happy that we were able to come to your home and do an annual health check assessment, and identified a problem that you were easily able to fix.Though you went with another company that had a "better" price, I'm wondering whether their fix was just a quick patch that is temporary, or the same repair we initially suggested. At any rate, we hope you will consider using 72 Degrees again in the future, and give us another opportunity to show why we are rated so highly on Angie's List. They initially came out and gave us a quote for a new HVAC. They were on time and professional. However, we never received a quote afterwards. Instead of the quote they've been sending advertisement emails. Called them three times with no response, when pressed, was put on hold, then hung up on. Called back one last time and got no response. Based on the initial visit it's clear why they have such great ratings here. However, we're at a total loss why they would suddenly act so disrespectfully and not want legitimate business.

Performed the work as promised, but tried to upsale to replace my whole AC unit, for like 10k. They were out the previous year to replace the motor in my condenser unit but put in crappy one. It failed just after the 1-yr warranty was up. When the motor failed and I called them again, they tried to sell me a whole new system, which wasn't necessary. They did fix it and my A/C has worked fine since, for a reasonable price. The techs are great and nice, but management seems to want to get whatever they can get from you. Just beware.

This service call went fine. The appointment was easy to get, the technician showed up on time and worked efficiently. He wore shoe covers in the house and was very courteous throughout the call. I had some questions about our system because this was our first winter in this house and with a dual zone heat pump. He kindly explained many details and even called the thermostat manufacturer to be sure it was set for optimal use. When I signed the invoice, the tech also handed me a service contract and explained the opportunity to participate in a routine service that could be automatically billed year-by-year. He was not pushy about it and we declined that service. No hassles.

The first repair tech arrived and determined that a 24 volt transformer was defective and replaced it with one from his truck. That didn't fix it so he left to obtain another transformer. He started to install it and shorted something so bad that it ruined his heavy duty wire cutter, blew the 220 Circuit breakers to the AC and blew the 200 amp house breaker! At this point, I realized that I had installed a new thermostat last sping and perhaps that could be the cause of failure taking out the 24 volt transformer. He decided to leave and had another tech (Bryan) come out the following day. 11/15 Bryan installed another 24 volt thermostat and stated the previous tech had wired it wrong (that's why all of the breakers tripped (including the 200 amp house main) He confirmed that the thermostat was the component that burned out the 24 volt transformer. He replaced the transformer and removed the programmable Honeywell thermostat (model RTH2410B) with a non programmable thermostat. I asked the tech about why he was replacing the thermostat and don't worry, there is no charge (*later there was). He did manage to get the unit operational and said he had to order a part and install it later. Bryan appeared quite knowledgeable. I volunteered to pay the invoice ($465) in advance of the part being installed. 11/27 Later, I feared that something had gone wrong because no one had called to arrange a service call to install the part. I called 72 degrees in Apex to question two items about my last (11/15) service call: 1. Why didn't the invoice that I payed in advance not contain any details like part(s) replaced and labor. Instead it just had a description of "complete electrical control" and total of $465. Answer was basically that's the way we do business. Really? 2. I then asked where we stood on getting the part installed that I had paid for 12 days ago? Later Bryan, called and stated the part had been back ordered. I questioned this and he said he would try another parts house and get back to me. 11/27 Bryan called and said he got the part and would be out that day. He came and installed the part and the unit was functioning properly EXCEPT the switch I had installed a number of years ago to turn off the heat strips to save electricity. Bryan then stated that my thermostat (original) wasn't designed for a heat pump and thus was the root of the problem, which is why he replaced it. I stated that the Honeywell model RTH2410B was designed to work with my heatpump. At this point, I just wanted the heat strip switch to work correctly and he said it was. I pointed out that the red light on the switch indicated that the thermostat was calling for the heat strips. On the previous thermostat the light would go on when the heat strips were on and I could turn them off by throwing the switch. No amount of convincing including drawing a circuit diagram that showed how the simple switch with red light was inserted between the thermostat and heat strip relay. It was apparent he didn't have basic knowledge of electronics. This was a shocker because I was obviously paying a labor rate for someone that understood basic electronic knowledge. I admit, I did get very upset with him not having the knowledge that I was paying for. He got upset and said he would contact management to come out and talk to me. I requested that he brought someone that understood electronics so I could show him my issue. 11/27 I received a call from Scott (service manager). First words from him was did I cuss at Bryan, I replied yes, as I was so frustrated trying to explain the heat strip cutoff switch and he could not understand it. All I wanted was to have someone wire it correctly as it was to begin with (before he replace the thermostat. Well, Scott wouldn't even listen to me, he kept interrupting my conversation stating his company would no longer service my equipment. That's fine with me, but the complaint is that he NEVER let me explain what I wanted. Scott just found a way to avoid fixing my issue by not listening to it. Between that issue and the fact that the first tech blew the house main (200 Amps), Bryan's inability to understand basic electric circuits and Scott the manager that wouldn't even listen to my problem so he could understand how upset I was. This all leads the my review of 72 degrees.

Response from 72 Degrees Heating & Air Conditioning
My name is Eddie Blanchard. I am the owner and general manager of 72 Degrees Heating and Air. It is my understanding that your system is now working correctly after you made an attempt to repair your own system in an effort to save money. We are in the business of repairing heating and air conditioning systems and we hope that we would have earned your respect by doing just that. When my technician arrived he found that the thermostat that you just installed was the cause of the failure from being wired incorrectly and not because it was the wrong thermostat. The thermostat was damaged so that is why you approved the replacement. The initial technician did have to get a senior technician out to trouble shoot the problem. When the second technician arrived he found another problem with the system which had to be ordered directly from the manufacturer. At the time you made no indication that there was a problem. When our technician returned along with the repair you wanted him to fix a non-factory switch that you were using to control your heat strips. Our technician did attempt to look at it, but our technicians are not trained to understand home remedy modifications that are not endorsed by the equipment manufacturer. When he couldn’t make it work correctly you started getting abrasive as you mentioned and using foul language, he felt it was best to leave the home. When my service manager called, you did admit to cursing at the technician and that is when we made the decision to not return to the home. As many of our reviews will show we always do everything we can to exceed expectations in order to earn a client’s faith and trust. In this situation we felt that our technician was being verbally abused and we could simply not continue this client relationship. It is unfortunate that this is how our technician was treated when all he wanted to do is get your system operating again and that is what he did. If you have any questions regarding this manner, please feel free to contact me directly.
