After they arrived and began work I was told that they were not going to install the heat strips. They got the salesman on the phone, and I asked how much of the quoted price he had included for the heat strips. He said "About $20." I was guessing at least $500 to $800, but have since been given an estimate from another company for $1,200 to do the wiring, duct work, install the appliance containing heat strips, and provide the controls to make it work. I was charged somewhere between $1,000 and $1,200 more for the equipment they installed and the work they performed than it was worth. I consider the company to be dishonest as well as incompetent. Except for this "bait and switch" tactic, I would never have allowed them to do the work for the price they charged. After observing their work, I would not consider using this company at any price. My observations of their work follow: The technician connected one line of his gauge set to the disabled unit and laid the other line out on the ground. I asked him if he wasn't going to recover the Freon (R-22) from the disabled unit and he said "The machine is on another vehicle." (NOTE: It is a Federal crime punishable by time in Federal Prison and/or a very substantial fine to intentionally release R-22 into the atmosphere.) After the technician had brazed most of the connections, I noticed that he was about to put a well-cleaned tubing end into an old dull fitting, a 45 degree elbow, and asked him if he wasn't going to clean the inside of the fitting. He didn't answer, but immediately cleaned only the end or edge of the fitting, not cleaning the inside at all. He apparently didn't know that molten metal is supposed to fill the entire capillary space within the joint and must have bright clean copper to adhere to both surfaces in order to make a strong joint that will withstand vibration and heating and cooling stresses for several years. All of his connections are suspect for possible future leaks. He should also have known, if he had been properly trained or had simply read the installation instructions that came with each unit, that air inside the tubing during brazing is supposed to be displaced by a low rate flow of dry nitrogen to prevent oxidation of the inside of the tubing during brazing. He skipped that step, too. I will concede that the technician was very careful while performing the brazing connections; I believe he had never been taught how to do it properly and didn't understand what he was trying to do.
Description of Work: I contracted for replacement of a stolen 2-ton AC condensing unit; replacement of a 4-ton locked-up AC condensing unit with a new 4-ton Heat Pump; and for 15 kw of electric resistance heat as a backup heat source. I had not previously considered adding backup electric resistance heat until the salesman suggested it, but decided that it might prove valuable in an emergency situation some time in the future.

After considering if the "pros" could be wrong about the units needing replacement, I decided to move forward. RW Heating & Air arrived on the day and time they promised, with sufficient personnel to get the job done. In addition to the replacement work, they installed an additional cold air return, as they said one unit had been "starved" for air. At their recommendation, I also installed a unit on my main power drop that stores energy in a capacitor system allowing for less power drainage when any electrical units in the house are started. While this added several hundred dollars to the installation, it still kept it around $14,000. Rather than construction grade HVAC units, I now have larger tonnage, high efficiency units, that are also a higher grade of manufacturing. The results speak for themselves. My average monthly bill has now dropped to about $130/month, spread across the last 12 months. That's a savings of $180/month! I've had several months where the bill was less than $100, something I never had before the work was done. The only concern I had was balancing the system for my downstairs bedrooms, which they reviewed with me, however they didn't provide any real answers on how to ensure those rooms would remain as comfortable as the rest of the house. However, given the results otherwise, I still give them an A in all categories.
Description of Work: This review is for work performed in February 2016. I had skyrocketing electric bills. In Feb and March of 2015 they were $700 and $500 respectively. The average monthly cost spread over a year was $310/month. An energy audit provided options which were technically incorrect, so I started looking at other options. My HVAC units were 20 years old and original to the home. I contacted a highly advertised company in the area to inspect and provide an estimate on whether the units needed replaced. The answer was yes, and I was provided an estimate to replace both outside units and the two air handlers of $26,000. At the advice of a friend, I contacted RW Heating & Air. They agreed the units needed replaced, however their estimate was for between $18,000 and $19,000, however they also would include a $5000 bonus, bringing the price in at just over $13,000--literally 1/2 of the other quote received.

I will be calling other companies to get quotes from. I do not need a salesman to sell me a product. I need a technician to tell me what is going on and what should be done about it.
Description of Work: We were going to upgrade our outdated AC unit. They sent a salesman with no knowledge at all to come out and sell us a unit. He had no clue what he was looking at. I was actually expecting the owner to come give a quote, so I was surprised when it was a salesman.

It went good. The guy showed up on time. It was weird because it was raining that day and we have an outside circuit box and it turned out that we just needed to flip the breaker over to make it work. He went ahead and didn't charge us for the service call for that part. We had other parts replaced that really weren't working well. It had a switchplate that was loose and he fastened that. They improved some lighting in the attic. Everything that we asked him to do, he did. He didn't have to come back for anything.

We have a warrantee through AHS and they sent RW to repair our A/C system, which was failing. The originally reported problem was an overflow into the pan below one of our condenser units in the attic. RW came and diagnosed a failed compressor and a failed blower but they never bothered to see if there was a clog in the primary drain line. They did use bathroom towels from our guest bathroom to soak up the water that was in the pans, infuriating my wife. After waiting for a week in the hottest Summer temps of the year, RW came back and installed a new compressor outside and a new blower motor inside the condenser. In the meantime, the overflowed water caused a large stain in the ceiling of an upstairs bedroom....RW told us that they were not responsible for this problem, which, in my opinion, was caused by their lack of attention to a clogged primary drain system. We called numerous times to get AHS to send RW back and fix the overflow problem. They finally were assigned to unclog the primary drain and when their technician did so, he temporarily clogged up our sink drains to use a pressurized system to blow out the drain. One of the stopped up sinks was not properly or sufficiently stopped up and the resulting explosion of debris covered every square inch of the bathroom walls, sink, ceiling, and shower curtain, with black, dirty muck. The technician, horrified by his lack of attention to this detail of properly stopping up the sink, did the best job he could to clean the mess. He offered to come back and paint it. He also made a comment about it in the work order, thank goodness.... When the owner of RW was asked to come back and paint the ceiling, which was covered in debris, he refused to do so, claiming the damage was a by product of his work and not his responsibility. We submitted a formal complaint to AHS and FINALLY, RW sent someone to paint our bathroom ceiling. What a debacle. I would never use this contractor again. NEVER !!!!

We have American Home Shield to cover out appliances, furnace, ac etc. Our ac went out, and American Home Shield (AHS) had a man from R&W heating and air come out to look at unit. He said it was a blown condenser, and he replaced it. Our copay was $60, with AHS covering the rest. Well 2 minutes after he left the ac stopped working again. We called them back and they said they would have someone out to look at it again. This took 3-4 days of 90 degree heat with no ac. When the man came back he looked at the unit and said the compressor was blown and had leaked out the freon. He told us the whole unit had to be replaced. AHS called us back a few days later and said that AHS would pay for the new unit and to have it installed. The next day, the man from R W heating & air called and said the new unit being put in was much bigger in size than old unit and a new slab had to be put in. He also said that we had to pay a $75 freon disposal fee. This after he had told us just a few days before that the freon had leaked out which meant we could actually dispose of it ourselves. He told us that since the unit was so much bigger, he had to replace the power line from the house to the unit. This also was not true. He also told us he had to purchase a permit from the city where we live to install the new unit for $75. We had to come up with $375 for all the fees and the slab for this work. I called AHS and got the part number of the new unit being put in, and got its specs online. It wasn't a bigger unit, it was actually smaller. I called R &W and told them the unit was smaller, so no new slab would be needed. They then changed their story and said it was due to building codes that the new slab had to be put in. So I called up the building code enforcer here where we live, and he he came and looked at slab and said that slab fit with building codes. Also I asked him how much the permit was for putting the unit in. He said there was NO permit required on a replacement install, only on a brand new install with no existing previous unit. He also told me this was common knowledge, and that the ac co. most certainly had to know this to be licensed. When I called the tech back (Shawn or Sean was his name) and asked him about the fees and the slab, he told me I had two choices-I could pay them the $375 and ask no more questions, or I could go without ac, because he would call AHS and have them deny my claim.
Description of Work: the tech from R & W heating & air put in a new condenser, which he said would fix the problem. It didn't. He came back and said the condenser wasn't the problem, the problem was the compressor was blown, and the whole unit had to be replaced.

Excellant, I would use again.
Description of Work: My a/c went out 08-02-20. My home warranty people, First American, scheduled a contractor right away and they came out 08-03-10. The company they sent out was Mcferren Heat and Air. The tech said I had a bad compressor and First American would have to order one. First American did and Mcferren picked it up on 08-04-10. Mcferren, never showed up time and again on scheduled appts, to complete the job. Finally, late Sat. evening 08-07-10, after going all week with heat indexs of 110 to 115, First American agreed to send a 2nd contractor out. The 2nd contractor was RW Heat and Air who called us 1st thing Mon. morning,08-09-10 and set a appt. for 1st thing the next morning 08-10-10. At 8:20 the next morning the service man from RW Heat and Air was on site. He installed a new turbo capacitor with a hard start kit, and my unit kicked off and ran fine. I have had some experience with heat and air and I watched the tech closely to satisfiy myself. He made sure the unit had a constant hi and lo pressure with the compressor running and also checked the amp draw to make sure it was not over. No, I did not get a new compressor like the 1st contractor diagnoised, but all we wanted was to get our air going in a timely matter. We obviously did not need a new compressor at this time. R W did everything they said they would do and did it in a timely manner. They resolved my problem within 24 hrs of receiving it. It is nice this day and time to find someone who will just do what they say. Thanks R W Heat and Air

The gentleman that came out to replace the unit was very personable, friendly and easy to get along with. When I looked up online how much the unit would cost, it was less than half of what they charged me. I went to speak to them about it to see if they'd made a pricing error. I was treated rather rudely by the lady who was running the office. She basically said that's how they make their money and asked if I would be paying my bill or does she need to have them come back out and take the unit away. I thought it was very rude to come across that way. I would not hire them again. After all was said and done, I felt like I had been taken for a ride. They were quick to say the whole unit needed replaced. We had just bought the house 6 months before that and the first thing the warranty company said was that we should have gotten a second opinion.
