The inspection was originally scheduled for Jan. 17 but I was contacted by the company, asking for a postponement, which I granted. Inspection was finally performed Feb. 6. I have no problem with the inspection or the recommendations, but I thought the estimates to be pretty high: $1,956. I contacted another company (also a highly-rated Angie's List company, and one whom I had used before). Their employee came out the VERY NEXT DAY, right on time. His recommendations agreed exactly with those of Home Green Home, but here's the kicker: His estimate for the EXACT SAME WORK was $703. So, even WITH the $500 discount from the "Big Deal," the work from Home Green Home would cost me over twice as much! Needless to say, I will be doing business with the other company. So -- be wary of the "Big Deal."
Description of Work: I bought an Angie's List "Big Deal": "$149 for $500 toward your Whole House Attic Insulation Project." An energy auditor visited the house and conducted an attic inspection, including "blower door testing and thermal imaging, a $199 value included at no extra cost." I was provided with a written recommendations and itemized estimates. Based on comparison with another company's estimate, I did not choose to have Home Green Home perform the work.

The job went very well see comments above. Very happy and would hire again.
Description of Work: I got an Angie Deal for insulation. The deal included the energy audit and insulation. Joe came out to perform the audit and was very professional and prompt. The audit took about 3hrs during this time he had to deal with interactions with my pets and children which he handled very well. After the audit was complete he walked me through the finding and left me a personal audit report with prices to perform the work. I was impressed that he noticed I'm an avid DIYer so he left me options that I could do myself to save money. All in all he was great to work with. A few weeks later I scheduled some of the work to be completed. There was a minor misunderstandng around partial day work vs full days work, which Joe quickly resolved to my satisfaction. When the work crew showed up they too where professional, clean and quick. They kept me informed of what they were doing and after they completed the spray foam in the attick and left you never knew they were here. No mess not even one piece of insulation on the floor, very impressive if you have ever been in your attick.

.Joe came in and did the audit and gave me an itemized list of services with the cost of each. There were several things that I could do myself and save some money. I didn't have them do everything on the list because I didn't think the benefits were there. I did have them blow insulation in the attic. Much of what I had up there had been compressed from having work up there for various reasons. I also had them spray insulation in places that were cold spots. Here is my only complaint. The areas that I can see the spray insulation look pretty sloppy and a few surrounding items had some spots of insulation on it . It's mostly in places that are out of the way so it's not a big deal. Just something to keep in mind if it's going to be in a place that's not covered up afterward. All in all, I was very happy with the results and would use them again - and would recommend them to a friend. I hope you give them a chance.
Description of Work: Did the Angie's big deal for the energy audit. Then had insulation blown into the attic and had some spray foam added in different parts of the house.

1st, I was happy they honored an expired coupon for the energy audit. Gentleman from the company showed up on time and described the process. He got right to work auditing the house and running various tests. After he was done, he printed out a report and we sat down to go over it. The report had some great recommendations (some I hadn't even thought of) and listed prices if I wanted the company to do the work for me. Good experience and helpful information.

I purchased the coupon price thinking I would get a bargain. However, it was a big JOKE. They came out and did an assessment. It was OUTRAGEOUS. Only if you were disabled, would you pay the quoted prices to do their work. They didn't meet their commitments and held me over a barrel to do all items. This would cost me over $700.00. RIDICULOUS!!! I contacted Angie's List and she refunded my coupon price. I went with the company that originally insulated my house. It was much LOWER than HOME GREEN HOME quoted. Home Green Home also had a stipulation, that if the work didn't take more than 1 day, it was an extra $100.00 charge. That wasn't noted in the coupon. BEWARE
Description of Work: This is just a warning to the Big Coupon through Angie's List. I purchased it, The BIG Coupon, and had Home Green Home come out. I actually stated I only needed my lower attic insulated. They came out and provided prices OVER the TOP. Also, they stated they couldn't just provide service on the lower attic, They never mentioned stipulations. Be cautious on these. I've had very good luck while reviewing everything else. If it sounds too good to be TRUE..it is.

Response from SmartHouse Heating & Cooling
First and foremost, we apologize for your disappointment regarding the big deal offer. The deal you purchased clearly stated that it was valid only for WHOLE HOUSE attic insulation projects. Your choice to insulate only your lower attic put you outside the conditions of the offer that were published on Angie’s List. That being the case, you were provided with a written estimate detailing our proposed charges. The trip charge was clearly identified on your estimate and resulted because you chose to have only a small amount of work installed that was not covered by your big deal. You were not ‘held over a barrel’ but rather were simply held to the terms of the ‘Big Deal’ that you bought. When it was apparent that the deal you bought not in-line with your needs, your Big Deal Purchase was cheerfully refunded without objection. We are very sorry that you weren’t happy with your purchase. We were ready to fully deliver exactly what you paid for with your deal if you wished to use it within the terms that were printed. Failing that, we were happy to return your money.

Great! The workers are friendly, polite, and most importantly, they really know their business. They did a wonderful job and left all areas clean. I am amazed at how much warmer the basement is after they sealed it. I know this will make a great difference on our energy costs. I am very glad we got their team out -- should have done something like this years ago, but better late than never.
Description of Work: We had them complete an energy audit, which indicated just how much we needed some work done on our drafty house. We hired them to install the insulation in the attic as well as seal the attic and the basement.

Everything went very well. I live in an old duplex - which made it more expensive than a single family home. Also, because of the age of the building, there were lots of problems. They were very helpful in recommending first those things that would make the most difference, not necessarily those things that were the most expensive. Each building is different, so costs will vary for work done. My schedule was very tricky and there was a lot of back and forth getting the dates right. They were very understanding and kept to their end of the scheduling. They were all very professional. They took care not to bring dirt into my home and they were unfailing polite and patient in answering all my questions regarding what they were doing, why they were doing it, etc. I also especially appreciated that they were able to show me the differences between the initial test results and those taken after the work was done. In addition, I like that they sent someone to check on the effectiveness of what was done. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: April - energy audit June 3, - Insulation: seal windows, doors, basement duct work etc. June 11 - Return to check that work done on the 3rd. was effective.

In this part of the house the workers were supposed to use a foam insulation to spot seal problem areas. The mixture of chemicals used to create the foam wasn't quite right at first, resulting in sticky gooey yellow liquid spills on parts of the basement walls and floor. I failed to really inspect things until after the workers had left. It was then that I noted that the workers didn't really do a good job in cleaning up insulation that had fallen into the yard and under the porch during the work on the floor of the addition/sunroom. I also then discovered the sticky yellow goo on the basement wall and floor. When my partner arrived home we began to worry that maybe the attic access door had been done poorly as well. I got a ladder out and went up into the attic to check this work. What I found was completly unacceptable. The work order we had, specified an insulated and sealed access for $80.00. Basically all the workers did was cut a piece of drywall to fit the access door - no insulation and certainly no seal. My partner emailed Martin, the energy auditor for the company, to complain. He contacted us promptly and it was decided that the two original workers would return with a third more experienced worker and address the complaints. Unfortunately this third more experienced worker wasn't available at a time convenient for me so I did end up having to take part of a day off. The owner of the company was out of town when all this occurred but he did call me and apologize for the inconvenience. Home Green Home explained that the two workers sent to our house had been in training with them for some time. Our job was the first job these workers had completed on their own without supervision. The work was corrected to our satisfaction. For our inconvenience additional foam insulation was added across the entire upper portion of the north wall of the basement. Home Green Home did this of its own accord. The lack of cleanup of insulation and the sticky goo in the basement were minor to us and on their own would not have resulted in a D for quality. The D for quality is for the attic access. The attic access door in our house is over a stairwell and very difficult to get to. Many older customers may have been hesitant to inspect this and would never have known that they paid for something that was not done. As I stated before, Martin and the owner do seem to care about their work. In this case I think they just needed to have someone experienced come at the end of the day and check the work. Since the work was done we have noticed a huge difference in the temperature and humidity levels in the basement.
Description of Work: Install new attic access - insulated and air seal. Basement spot sealing - penetrations, addition wall connection, plumbing stack, above windows. Install dense packed cellulose to floor of addition/sunroom. Maybe this is a strange way to start the story but I have to say that this company gets an A for service recovery. I think that both the owner and Martin, the auditor, really care about the work they perform. Two workers from Home Green Home arrived as scheduled. They got to work right away on putting insulation into the sunroom/addition floor. This seemed to go well. Unfortunately things did not seem to go as smoothly in the basement.

A gentleman named Martin performed the audit. Both my partner and I were home during the audit because we were very curious about what the audit would find. We liked Martin. He was knowledgeable and professional. When he found things we could do the improve the energy efficiency level of the house he readily told us if it was something he thought we could do ourselves. Many of the suggestions were things we could do ourselves but had just never thought to do (such as caulk around the wood work around the windows and doors). The thing we most liked about Martin was that he told us if he thought certain more expensive improvements would really be cost effective in the long run. We felt that he was honest. We learned a lot during the audit and I feel like we now know our house better.

Overall, things went well. They did a great job on the sealing/insulation work. The soffit vents and bath vents were not installed to my satisfaction the first time, so I had to have them back out to correct a few things. I have seen about a 50% reduction in our heating bills over last winter, so I think that is also a testament to their work. There were a few relatively minor issues that are the reason I am not giving them an A in quality: - They tried to skimp on the baffles in the attic by putting them in every other bay. When I complained they agreed to put them in every bay, although in order to do so they had to break a couple in half since they did not have enough baffles on the truck. - The soffit vents were not glued or screwed into the soffits so they started falling out within a couple days. They had to come back out and glue them. - They vented the bath exhausts through our existing gable vent , which was fine, but they left a large hole in the gable vent where critters could enter. I complained and provided them a piece of screening and they fixed the hole. To be fair, the issues arose mostly from the venting work I had them do, which is not really their area of expertise, but they agreed to do the work while they were up there. I would not let any of the above dissuade you from using this company, they were professional and resolved all my complaints (I am not easy to please). However, I would recommend inspecting their work up in the attic before they leave for the day.
Description of Work: * Installed twelve 3" circular soffit vents ($200) * Vented two bath fans to the exterior of the house ($250) * Vented kitchen exhaust fan to exterior of house ($275) * Sealed kitchen and bath soffits in the attic ($415) * Added R30 insuation to attic (1260 sq. ft) ($1025)

We selected them because they are innovative and are focused on holistic home energy performance. Additionally, they are one of the few contractors that we found that were certified by the US EPA's Home Performance with Energy Star program, so we knew that they knew what they were doing. They were very willing to discuss their thoughts of how they would insulate our attic and were able to adjust their services and the quote according to our wishes of how we'd like the work done. They were helpful and polite and did the work well. They wanted to make sure that we were satisfied with the work and were willing to do what was necessary to ensure a successful job.
Description of Work: Home Green Home removed old and failing fiberglass insulation from our very poorly insulated attic. They sealed in old vermiculite insulation using foam boards and expanding foam spray and then dense packed cellulose over the foam boards. They also used plywood to surround one of our attic walls and then dense packed cellulose all along the wall and blew loose fill insulation on the top of our living area in the attic.
