Description of Work: We use a coupon from Angie's List for an energy audit with a credit for $250 toward any work preformed. The company sent an architect, Joe Page, to do the energy audit. The initial report's summary and recommendations were useful but not detailed. I followed up with a list of 30 questions. Mr. Page quickly and thoroughly answered my questions, complete with handouts, links to information on the spray foam insulation, etc. That part was above excellent. Five-star service. We did some of the recommendations ourselves, such as buying another carbon monoxide detector and installing a blanket on our hot water heater. Both tasks had been on our to-do list for years. We thought the prices for those tasks were ridiculous. We had SmartHouse do a small job as a test. They installed spray foam in our basement around the perimeter of the house that was drafty near the floor joists. That job was completed in a professional way and in far less time than originally estimated. We also had good quality weather-stripping installed on both the front door and the back door. Both of these improvements made a noticeable and immediate improvement. Our coupon credit paid for the weatherstripping installation. Our air conditioner check-up has yet to occur, due to the cool weather. That should happen soon. We appreciate the pricing from SmartHouse that matches a rebate from Ameren. The result will be $0 cost to us. We balk at the price of the spray foam insulation in the attic estimate from SmartHouse. We wish they had been more forthcoming about the cost of their time and materials. We are undecided if we will hire them to do this $3,000 job. I noticed more than 100 customer reviews for this company on Angie's List. I read many of them. Conclusion: Quality work at a high price. Many members said they hired others.

Description of Work: On 12/21/2011, we had Home Green Home perform a home energy audit. We reveiewed the recommendations before Mr. Page left that day, and then received a follow up with all of the additional details we discussed. We had them come back on 1/10/12-1/11/12 to perform the following: Install transfer grills between bedrooms and hallway to relieve pressure created when bedroom doors are closed and air handler is running, which is causing the furnace and water heater to spill exhaust gases back into the home Seal wall top plates in attic with spray foam above return registers utilizing wall cavities for ducting (4 return registers total) Caulk gaps in window/door trim as required Seal around plumbing stack and kitchen vent from attic Install air tight enclosure around master bath recessed light Seal accessible utility penetrations through rim joist area in basement Install door sweep at door to garage and to storage shed below addition Rework existing fiberglass batt insulation at cathedral ceiling/skylight, attic walls to be in contact with the back side of the drywall, and install house wrap over these walls to improve insulation effectiveness & hold it in place over time Install blown cellulose over existing insulation to bring total up to R-49, as accessible Install insulation wind baffles at eave vents as accessible or necessary in order to maintain installation quality and performance over time by preventing wind from blowing insulation away from eaves Install foam weather stripping at edge of attic hatch panel and caulk hatch trim to ceiling Front bedroom closet - Remove/replace drywall blocking installed at 2 floor joist bays from unfinished basement area in order to install dense-pack, cellulose insulation in between floor joists to air seal and insulate Seal edges of plywood ceiling in the storage locker with spray foam Vent existing 1st floor bathroom exhaust fans to outdoors to eliminate potential moisture issue in attic (2 fans total) Because of the way the front bedroom closet was added on by a previous owner, it was too difficult to install the dense-pack, cellulose insulation. Instead, they sealed the area and spray foamed all of it. We also received an estimate for the replacement of our HVAC main units, which we're considering because of their age an inefficiency. For the most part, we're very pleased with the work was done, though we have had a few issues. We were told the caulk that was used to seal the window trim was a synthetic caulk that would flex with movement and would take years before it would crack. The caulk used around the window in the kitchen began to crack only a few weeks after all the work was done. The gentlemen that performed all the work were in such a hurry to leave the second day, they left the furnace and water heater shut off after running the tests to confirm that the work they did made the home more efficient/safe. Lastly, in the areas where spray foam was used, the job was a little messy. Otherwise, we've noticed a difference in some of the areas where the home was less comfortable.
