They arrived to look at the furniture, gave an estimate and took the furniture to be redone. It was finished in the promised time frame. They delivered the furniture back and placed it in the house. It looks better than I imagined. We will use them again and recommend them highly
Description of Work: Five antique tables were refinished to an amazing finished product. A navy footlocker with oil based paint was stripped and finished to natural.

In the last experience we had with Custom Furniture Works, they upholstered all of our living room furniture in one type of fabric. This fabric proved to be very heavy, but they continued with a dedication to not only finish the work, but to return our furniture in a timely fashion with an excellence in workmanship that I have not seen in years. Most companies today do not exhibit the personal attention to a project, no matter how large or small, like Custom Furniture Works does. Their pick-up and delivery service is impeccable led by Monty Gibbs and his men. The men actually take off their shoes when they arrive whether they are picking up furniture or delivering furntiure. Both brothers are unbelievabley thoughtful and business-like. Jeff Gibbs is known for his customer service approach trying, always, to understand what the customer's needs are and making certain that these requirements are met by their staff of very experienced employees. Jeff and Monty have been very kind to us ,and we are very pleased with the work they have completed. It is always a pleasure to work with both Jeff and Monty. I might also add that if you want to find a beautiful clock, large or small, new or antique, you should definitely consider Custom Furniture Works. Jeff has a vast knowledge of antique clocks, the proper working of the mechanism as well as the overall care of clocks. He is a tremendous resource in the St. Louis clock world and also knows where to have dials repainted with reputable dealers companies. All in all, Jeff and Monty have created a company of hard-working people ready to assist the customer and able to return a product that will be an heirloom for years to come. I must add that Dawn, their assistant, is very friendly, always kind and returns phone calls with a quick turn around time. No matter what the situation, she is ready to help schedule things to best accomodate everyone including the customer. Dawn is pleasant throughout the whole process. Above all, Jeff and Monty are honest, hard-working men who take pride in their company, and its name, as well as their work.
Description of Work: Over several years, we have been very pleased with Custom Furniture Works which is owned and opertated by two brothers, Jeff and Monty Gibbs. These two men work well in tandem and have developed a company that can handle upholstery work, refinishing of furniture, the manufacture of furniture as well as furniture repair. These two gentlemen know how to handle customers who have easy or difficult projects and they are always pleasant and workable in solving problems that are presented to them. Initially, they refinished many of our antique wood furniture pieces. All of the pieces, whether they were mahogany, cherry or rosewood, have been restored to their original beauty with exceptional care given to every detail of the work. The result is incredibly beautiful pieces of furniture thanks to the fine craftsman, John, a man from Ireland, who has an amazing sense of quality. John's craftsmanship is the best of the best! His understanding of fine furniture is most rare in today's world. He is a European craftsman with a European attention to detail and pride in his work. Just recently, we had Custom Furniture Works upholster our living room furniture. The result is that we have beautifully upholstered furniture with attention to every detail in the upholstering process. Their lead upholstery man, Joe, did a magnificent job on these pieces. Joe's work, like John's work, is the work of a master craftsman who has considered every aspect of the work and completes every aspect with a professional and exceptional ability with excellence as his "first" name! No matter the difficulty, Joe has seen it all and knows exactly what to do to return an excellent product to the customer. He has many years of experience, and Joe's work reveals, not only his vast understanding of the upholstery business, but his expert handling of the fabric and his unsurpassed results. He does incredible work! When friends see the newly upholstered pieces in our living room, they can't believe the workmanship. Truly, Custom Furniture Works is the best when it comes to anything regarding woodworking, refinishing and upholstery work. We are exceptionally pleased with everything they have completed for us, and we can highly recommend their work.

Called for a free estimate and someone came within two days. They said they could do the repair and it could take up to three weeks. The job was completed within a week and a half. The repair work was great. You would never know that anything was broken. I will use this company again.
Description of Work: An antique burl walnut marble top cabinet was repaired. One leg was broken, vaneer was off a small area on the bottom left side, top frame was off one side, and vaneer was missing from a small area in front.

Estimate was unbelievably expensive. Price list on the company website states that a complete refinish on a full size dresser is $600 - $800. The piece I received an estimate on was a nightstand, roughly 1/4 the size of a full dresser and only the top required refinishing. The individual providing the estimate took one quick look and said, "Yep...that will be $400.00". I said no thank you just as quickly. Outrageous! I could buy a new piece for that? To be fair, the company was prompt, worked around my schedule, and provided an estimate on the same day requested. Would have liked to use them, but the price quoted was double what it should have been. Take heed when getting an estimate.

Response from CUSTOM FURNITURE WORKS
No actual refinishing services were performed for this customer. Although we try to provide accurate price ranges on our website, there are so many variables that go into the final cost of a project that we always tell our customers we will give them a firm price when we see the piece, and before any work is begun. Once a price is given, we stand by that price. No surprises. In this situation, the top of the nightstand was a full-fill finish, which requires a much different process than a standard finish. We certainly regret the customer was surprised by the pricing, and that we were not given the opportunity to provide him with any refinishing service.

My wife's parents passed away recently and she inherited a 90 year old upright china cabinet with claw feet. This piece came from Germany and once graced her grandmother's home. During the move to our new house, two of the feet broke off. We couldn't even stand it up in a corner. She also had a cedar hope chest given to her as a teenager. It had suffered years of misadventure and neglect and even had BB's lodged in it. It was in horrible condition with a front underside drawer that was shattered except for the front faceplate. The china cabinet had to be saved and I felt that now was the time to rescue the cedar chest as well. We searched Angie's list and found Custom Furniture Works. Judging from the ratings they received and the photos on their web site, it looked like they did good work. I called and they promptly arranged for the pickup of the items needing repair. They gave me an estimate of $950 and the bill came to $900. It seemed like a lot of money to me but the work they did was fantastic. The feet on the china cabinet were repaired or replaced (I can't tell) and it stands and looks just like the 90 year piece that she treasured before it was damaged. The finish on the feet perfectly matches the aged sheen of the rest of the cabinet. The cedar chest was even better. The drawer that had so very little of the original material left was rebuilt and sized to fit the opening perfectly. The chest exterior was repaired, including the places where BB's had been lodged in it and it was refinished using the original hardware that we thought had been damaged. (This is why the total price was bit lower than originally quoted.) They sanded out the interior and even managed to preserve some printed messages placed by the manufacturer that were present when it was new. The wooden skirting was repaired where dogs had chewed the edges. The work they did on this this chest was amazing. We thought these pieces of furniture were lost. My wife cried when she saw them come back in such perfect condition.
Description of Work: Two feet on china cabinet repaired. One cedar hope chest extensively repaired and refinished.

We originally spent more than we normally would to purchase an office chair, but it was "The Exact Right Chair" so we made the investment. In less than two years, metal under-seat portion of my office chair (the part which provides the tilt/swivel, as well as the platform which secures that portion to the chair) was badly damaged through normal use. The metal itself had torn in four places and the chair was no longer safe to use. The Custom Furniture Works folks were friendly and professional on the phone, and even more so when I brought the chair in for them to evaluate. I was told exactly what would be done to repair the chair, how much it would cost, and how long it would take to complete the work (all of which turned out to be accurate to the last detail). The metal under-seat portion is now stronger and more stable than it was on the day we first brought it home from the store. We are thrilled with their work and would happily recommend them to anyone needing similar services.
Description of Work: Two welds to the metal under-seat part of an office chair. The welds were smoothed, painted to match, and the entire platform was reattached to the chair. One caster was also repaired.

The result for the reupholstery was excellent; the chairs look better than ever and are more comfortable due to high quality materials and workmanship. For the cabinet, they matched the undamaged door and refinished the entire piece to make the appearance consistent. They refinished the carved antique table top and applied a protective finish to prevent future water damage. They matched and replaced a piece of missing trim on the clock and restored the workings so that it now keeps perfect time and chimes as it was designed to do in the 1800s. Finally, they took a 1960s Danish coffee table that didn't fit in my new home and made it into a headboard so that I could use it with coordinating pieces in my bedroom set. For all of these items, they picked up the pieces of furniture and returned them better than new, putting them in place, including winding the clock and installing the headboard.
Description of Work: Custom Furniture Works reupholstered two easy chairs, using fabric that I provided, repaired an antique cabinet with a broken door, refinished an antique carved rosewood table top, repaired and restored an antique clock, and made me a custom headboard. Their work was excellent for every project. They are not inexpensive, thus my grade of B for price, but when dealing with treasured furniture I was willing to pay more to get the best service.

The original price quoted was the final price with only a minor increase for rollers and a solid wood top that we requested by us after the original quote. We were invited to see the piece after it was basically constructed in case we saw a need to make a change before it's completion.
Description of Work: We asked Custom to make a special audio cabinet to hold our various electronics to go under the wall-mounted TV. Jeff came to the house, listened very carefully to our requirements, looked around the room so that he could match other wood and trims. Five weeks later he delivered a cabinet that was even better than we had envisioned. I will have him build any custom furniture or cabinet that I need in the future.

The overall process went very smoothly. We dropped the table off and left it at the shop for an estimate. The next day we received an estimate by phone. Two weeks later the table was delivered to our house (delivery and pick up are free for $250 and above repairs). The charge was exactly what the estimate was, minus the 5% Angie's list discount. Everything was handled in a very professional manner. This is a first class business in every detail.
Description of Work: Custom Furniture Works did an absolutely fantastic job of fixing an antique table that we believed was beyond repair! The table is a rosewood coffee table with ornate ivory inlays. The top had pulled away from the sides leaving a crack about 1/8 inch wide and about 10 inches long, that ran not only through the wood, but through several pieces of the inlay design. We doubted that it could be fixed, and were worried that it might come back looking worse than when we dropped it off. The table looks absolutely wonderful, and we are amazed with the quality of the work. There is no evidence of the damage, and the repaired section looks just like the rest of the table top. The individuals who worked on our table are true artists. I would not hesitate to entrust them with valuable or precious items. The price was quite reasonable given that they accomplished a task that we felt was impossible.

Based on Angie's List ratings, I selected and emailed a picture of my 75 year old wood knee hole desk to Custom Furniture Works and received an estimate of $695 (with an Angie's List coupon applicable). At my invitation, two men came to our house, viewed the desk and we discussed making a couple of repairs and lightening the finish. They confirmed the estimate and took the desk to their shop indicating a 5-7 week time frame to complete. The desk was delivered in 5 weeks and 3 days and is far more beautiful than I could have imagined. The drawers slide freely without scraping. The price, $660.24, was as estimated net of the 5% offered to Angie's List members.

My initial contact with the individual answering the phone at this company talked with me and was very understanding and helpful in identifying exactly what I want to have done. This was an important factor in choosing Custom Furniture Works for my work. When the individual came to look at the book case and discuss what I wanted done he too was understanding and guided me through the refinish process. Both individuals gave me the confidence they knew what they were doing. When the unit was returned to me, in just one week, it had the look of a fine piece of furniture. Custom Furniture Works did an outstanding job taking care of every detail of the refinish job. They were courteous and respectful of being in my house, guided me through the process they would do to refinish, and alerted me to possible consequences that might develop due to the work on a unit of this age. I was very impressed with the work they did and will definitely recommend Custom Furniture Works to anyone that need this type of work done. This was a job WELL DONE!
Description of Work: Custom Furniture Works refinished a wood book case that was about 50 years old. The work was to take the original finish off the wood and bring the wood beauty to highlight. I did not want the book case refinished to pristine condition, just clean it and make it look presentable.

We took the chair in in late April, 2011, received our estimate of $480 and was told that the chair would be done sometime in September. In fact, the chair was done earlier than the time estimate by a number of weeks and at the quoted price. While if you look very closely you can tell the new leg is slightly different from the others in the wood grain, it is so close that you really can't tell any difference from a few feet away. The fit and the finish work on the leg and the caning was excellent. Overall, we're very pleased with the craftsmanship and that our heirloom chair was salvaged. And, while the price seemed high, we have nothing to which to compare; hence our statement that we would use them again.
Description of Work: 80 year-old heirloom chair (part of a matching set of four) had a broken leg that had to be custom made and finished and the cane seat had to be re-caned.

They are one of my favorite companies. They did an excellent job. They did a very good work, and their prices are extremely reasonable. They tell me what they are going to do. When I call up, they will say just bring it in. They bring a guy up from back of the shop. The guy, who is going to do the work, will look it over. He makes the price. The price is usually reasonable, and then they get it done. I know how busy they are, but usually they will be pretty quick. They do what they say they are going to do. They do better than what anyone would think they are going to. Sometimes they will be backed up with a lot of work. They always have an answer when I call. They always return the call.
Description of Work: I took a museum quality aims chair or potato chips chair to Custom Furniture Works for repairing, which was made in late 30's about three months ago. They have refinished a few woodwork tables sort of modern tables for me. I took in a mirror where the glue had sailed on it, so they took it all apart and put it all back together.

I took the two chairs, which are family heirlooms, to the shop. They promptly gave me an estimate, which I felt was reasonable. I left the chairs for repair. I got an estimate within a few days of calling and was told the job could be finished in 7-10 days. They came and picked up the table and chairs and fabric for reupholstering the chairs. Eight days later, I received a call that the set was finished and could be delivered that day. It arrived two hours later looking unrecognizable (in a good way). The set is 75 years old and was very squeaky and dinged up. Now, however, it looks like new and doesn't wobble or squeak. Overall, an extremely well done job and well worth the money.
