Work not completed.
Description of Work: Fence and Deck Depot came out to bid three jobs, a fence, two decks, and a guard rail. Aristotle, their sales rep, showed up on time. He had a look around, asked questions, and gave me a general idea of what to expect. He was polite and professional. He answered the questions I had for him at that time and via email/phone following the visit. He returned all emails and calls in less than a day. The most immediate job was the guard rail which is needed before the winter ice sets in. After some research, Aristotle informed me that the railing would take approximately three weeks for the manufacturer to prep and ship. With the holiday upon us, I figured there would be delays and did not want to wait until the winter ice season had passed. I am still in the process of getting fence bids. If the price is right, I will certainly give my work to the Fence and Deck Depot based on their current interaction and responsiveness. I will update this post if that happens.

Description of Work: Had 2 sides of my cedar fence replaced. The installation wasn't exactly what we wanted and they worked with us to resolve the issue quickly and to our satisfaction. Very professional and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend them for someone who needed cedar fencing.

Description of Work: The extended deck to the pool is awesome. My husband and I have had a run of bad luck with contractors, so we were apprehensive at first, but the job was done perfectly. Above and beyond what we expected. My husband usually always has something negative to say about every job we contract out, but this time I haven't heard nothing but positive remarks. Very pleased.

All we had requested was an estimate for a large deck on our house, but the salesman totally turned me off to his company. He was so negative, telling me things I couldn't do or shouldn't do and questioned me about the size of the deck. I have had other estimates and those companies are working with me to do what I had envisioned. Rob spent most of his time trying to sell me on the materials and little time listening to what I wanted. I told him I wanted to see the drawing and he informed me that they only do drawings when we would sign a contract. I let him know that was a deal breaker that I wouldn't be interested in proceeding further unless I had a drawing of what he was thinking and then compare that to what I wanted. FYI - the estimate came in 10K more for a much smaller deck than other companies have provided to me. I have no interest in dealing with this company again.

Originally they gave us one of the best prices - we interviewed ~12 different companies - we took a break before deciding to go ahead, and contacted them to come back and work with us. I had to pursue them - called a couple times to get them to come out and plan with us. We came up with a plan we liked with the salesman. He was low pressure -which has good & bad points - we had to keep contacting him, but he wasn't pushy & listened to our budget pretty much. Next we worked with the architect - and he came in and changed around our plans - he had to work around some issues (like overhead lines) - the overhead lines ended up being a big issue - some things which we liked in the new plans, some things we didn't prefer - for example, we now have steps down to the deck, instead of it being at the same level. The steps were added so we hopefully wouldn't have to move the overhead lines - but he really underestimated the height, and we had to pay an extra 2000 (above the price listed above) to have the lines moved. The contract was signed in June and we were told that it would take ~2-3 weeks for plans, 3 weeks for permiting, and 2 weeks to build. Plans took ~6 weeks and there were many excuses - permitting took 13 weeks, and building about 10 weeks. Later there was denial that those timelines were ever told to us, but they had been on multiple occassions. Some of the workers were great, others seemed to sit around a lot of the time. They took down our deck early on in anticipation of getting the permit approved (we asked that they not do it until within 1 week of construction beginning) - we had a door to nothing for over a month. They left a mess in our backyard regularly, which we complained about - we have dogs - and they would leave nails & screws and boards and trash (cups, cigarette butts, etc.) in the yard - and when they tore down the deck they left just the stairs going to nothing - a very big risk/hazard - we called them to come address this immediately. The trash problems were there throughout the project. Regarding the permitting - they told us that they drew the plans to the 2005 standard, but St. Louis county was now reviewing to the 2009 standard. This caused some of the problems - the county office did make them do a seismic evaluation - which required them going to an outside firm - but that wasn't the only issue. This did end up adding cost to the project - and some time (they had to reorder 2 windows and get new posts that had to be specially milled) - and they did not charge us any additional (though they did ask if we'd split the extra cost and I said no because of all of the delays and other issues we had been through by that time). We understood some of the delays were not their fault, but I do feel that there were communication issues with the permitting office that delayed things. Also, there seemed to be communication problems witht he workers. We had to continually call to get updates - I would call and they would call my husband back instead of me (who didn't necessarily know what I had called about) - or they wouldn't call back at all. The architect/foreman would say he'd call with an update on Wednesday, and Friday I would call because we still hadn't heard from him. When I called the office, the owner called me back promptly and things improved quickly - he even gave me his personal cell phone number. In fact, our biggest complaint was timing and communication - they did not let us know what was happening - we had to keep our dogs in when they were going to be there- and they wouldn't show up for several days (because supplies weren't in, etc. - but they didn't tell us - we had to call). Also, I told them I had a baby shower planned for the sunroom in late October and I was assured even up to the week before that it would be ready - and it wasn't even close (it was finished in December). In the end, we are happy with the finished product, and are enjoying the room, but getting there was very frustrating. The quality of the work is good - we did have to make them redo a few things - and some of the detail items weren't done right the first time (poor cuts with quick fixes on the door frames, nail holes showing in the baseboards, etc.). They did fix everything - not always with the way we'd prefer - but overall it looked good in the end.
Description of Work: Fence & Deck Depot worked with us to design a new deck & 4 season room. They tore down our old deck, built a 19X14 foot sun room on pillars with vaulted ceiling, finished off with drywall and a laminate floor (we painted it and we bought ceiling fans and lights which they installed). They built a 11X16 foot composite deck with a landing and set of stairs going down to the back yard.

Dear Member, Thanks for your report on our company. I have copied and will go over what you have said with our staff in hopes to improve our service to other customers and maybe we can have you as a customer in the future. I agree that the communication from our foreman to you was not the best, we continue to work with him to improve in this area. Where he lacks in his ability to communicate he picks up in the ability to put out a nice product. I know this project took some time due to the need for a seismic evaluation and have no excuses beyond that. I must say that we have installed three screened rooms and your room addition in 2010 and have installed five other screened rooms, additions or just roofs that tied in the existing home since we started doing these types of projects in 2008. Since 2008 we have installed over 250 decks including the rooms and roofs with very little problems to speak of. We do hold a high standard on what we install and try to do our best at giving our customers an outstanding value for the money spent. In this case we stumbled and did ask for a little more for the seismic fee since this was unexpected and caused us to change the understructure greatly increasing our cost. I wish you would reconsider the grade you gave us on quality and price because you have a wonderful new addition to your home. Thank you again, Truly, Richard Lusa President Fence & Deck Depot Inc. I had the sales rep come to my home. We went over what would need to be done, since part of my fence blew over in a storm and my deck is over 20 years old and needed some things replaced. While they were at it, to powerwash and seal the fence and deck. Things I had done myself since the deck was built and the fence installed! They showed up about two weeks later to do the job. Of the first three men to show up, two could not speak English and one was very poor! They worked on the fence, Some posts were to be replaced. They even replaced one of my neighbors and missed one of mine. They powerwashed the deck so hard they shredded all of the top railing and the up and down slats in the railing. They were working on the stairs at the same time. When the stairs were checked, the runners were all cross cut! The posts at the end of the stairs were just placed in the old spot, never secured. As a side to the stairs. That was found to be faulty after the work began. I was quoted a price for the stair replacement and then charged $99 more at the final bill. I called Fence and Deck Depot. The owner came out to see what happened. He said he saw the problems. He wanted me to give him a chance to fix the problems. So, I agreed with the condition that the crew must speak English. At the same time, I told him about my concern about the color I chose and asked if it was too late to change my mind. I wanted Clear only, no tints. He said he had concerns about a deck that old and some of the new wood not looking good. I said I wanted clear anyway. So he said he would put two tints and one clear swatch on the porch that wouldn't show. I chose the clear again. The cedar looked orange and the brown looked dull. Just use the clear. Also, I had concerns because my deck was cedar and they were not using cedar to replace in the repairs. Well, the cedar was replaced finally, the new runner and stairs were done. The fence is still not level across the top where the posts were replaced. It looks hilly? is that the word... it isn't straight! They did agree to replace the top rails that were destroyed by the first powerwashing. They did not replace the slats but then I said that would be okay. My mistake. The powerwashing was poorly done. There are still black marks where it wasn't done properly and then covered in sealant. The fence top rail, none of that was power washed, I think if you can't see it from standing on the ground, it doesn't have to be done! Then the sealant used was cedar stained not clear! The deck is ORANGE! Then they did the fence in brown!! There is very poor communication within this company. I feel like they don't care, just get the job done no matter how sloppy!! One thing I would like for everyone to learn from this, make sure the workers can communicate in English!!! I would never recommend this company! Also, I was to have a 3ft gate replaced by a 4ft gate. The first time the gate was replaced, it was replace by another 3 ft gate. Very poor quality. Very poor communication!!
Description of Work: I was to have the deck and fence power washed. Fence and deck repaired, fence and deck sealed. Posts were to be replaced, slats in fence replaced, stairs on deck replaced.

They were very quick and got the job done well. We were pleased with them. I would recommend them to a friend. We got two estimates and they were the second company from whom we got an estimate. A gentleman came out and he explained to us about the types of products they had. They install wood fences, steel fences and vinyl fences but we already knew that we wanted a wood fence. We walked in the backyard and looked at the place where I wanted the fence. He then took the measurements and checked the property line. We made sure that we had the property surveyed and he looked through everything else. He would have recommended us to get it surveyed if we hadn?t surveyed it. He then calculated as to how many linear feet of fence we needed and then gave us the estimate right away. Their price was the lowest compared to the other companies from whom we got estimates. I would use their services in the future too.

They did a super job. From the salesman making sure the fence was installed so that when I moved in my dog would be able to go out into the yard. They followed the "dig - rite markings, and made sure they didn't disturb any wiring for cable, electrical, etc... They measured, installed the fence and cleaned up everything. I highly recommend using them.

We had gotten several estimates for our fence and we went with this company because they could get to the job quicker than any of the others. While they were not the least expensive, they did come down on their price to meet their competition. The installers were hard working and after completing the job, they did a great job cleaning up the debris.

Thank you for the report on our company. We stock the 6' style of fence and buy it in truck loads to save cost. The 5' fence would be a special order and it was cheaper to cut down the 6' to 5' than it would be to buy the 5' as a special. We did fail in verbally communicating to the crew that they needed to cut the 6' to 5' even though it was written on the work order. This was a valuable training tool that we used to go over how to review our work orders with the crews to ensure we get it correct the first time. Again, thanks for the business and the review. They delivered exactly what I had expected. They did a great job with the fence. The initial estimate was right on the money. I think their prices were somewhere in the middle of other companies. The only problem that occurred was when the workers first came out, they didn't have the special nails needed for that kind of material which ended up taking a little longer to finish the fence.

SALES MAN WAS NICE, HOWEVER, TOLD ME WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR, NOT WHAT THEY WOULD ACTUALLY DELIVER. (NO NICE HANDLE FOR FENCE, NO CEMENT MIXER-THEY USED A PAN, NO NAILS-THEY USED SCREWS)WORKERS WERE TERRIBLE. SHOWED UP 5 HOURS LATE, (AT 5:00 AT NIGHT). WE WERE GOING OUT TO DINNER, SO COULD NOT WATCH THE PROGRESS, BUT WERE NERVOUS THEY WOULD NOT DO A GOOD JOB SINCE IT WAS SO LATE IN THE DAY. CAME HOME TO PARTIALLY COMPLETED JOB. PHONE LINE WAS CUT AND THEY HAD TO COME BACK THE NEXT DAY. I HAD TO CHECK THEIR WORK, SOME BOARDS WERE NOT SPACED PROPERLY OR LEVEL. WE CHOSE THIS COMPANY BECAUSE OF THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY, BUT TRYING TO GET SOME CRACKED BOARDS REPLACED PROVED TO BE A BIG CHALLENGE. WE DECIDED TO JUST OVERLOOK THE CRACKS RATHER THAN WAIT FOR THE WORKERS TO RETURN. WE NEEDED TO STAIN THE FENCE. THE FENCE LOOKS GOOD, BUT THE PROCESS WAS PAINFUL! NOW WE NEED TO FENCE ANOTHER PART OF THE YARD. WE WILL NOT BE CALLING THIS COMPANY AGAIN.
