We had a very warm spell and our a/c was just not cooling. We had called another company to come out and fix it. The tech sent out acted like I was wasting his time. He said it was fixable, but replacing it would be a better option, and in the long run more cost effective. He gave a quote on a new a/c. I really wasn't happy with his attitude. I told him I had to talk to my husband and I would get back to him. I got on Angie's List and started looking for other options. I called Midwest and they were out in a few hours. Mike was very pleasant and informative. After checking to see what size unit we needed he showed me 4 different options, and explained the differences. After some discussion, he made a suggestion on one. Or rather, he agreed the one I was thinking about was probably my best option. I mentioned I had a coupon, he said he had a better one that saved me another $150. ($500 total) Midwest was $1300 less then the previous company's quote. Two days later the technician, I believe his name was James, came out right on time. He also was very pleasant and professional. After he had everything installed and checked he went over the unit with me and showed me a few differences. Apparently the previous installer had used an incorrect part. I am thinking it was the thermostat. He even changed out the drain hose on our humidifier, as it appeared clogged. I am so happy with the service from Midwest, that they are the only ones I will be calling from now on. I will also be recommending them to anyone I know who needs their type of service!
Description of Work: We had called for an estimate to have our a/c replaced. Mike came out the same day I called. He had several options on units for us to pick from. After discussing our the particulars of our life he made a suggestion, which my husband and I both agreed with. It was not the most expensive. The unit was installed two days later.

It went fantastic, start to finish. Midwest's salesman Kenny Duff is just great to work with. Not high pressure sales, but more like a friend in the business whom you can ask tons of questions of and he'll really try hard to help you understand, including occasionally pointing out where NOT to spend your money. Given that I was about to spend roughly $14K, I really wanted to understand it thoroughly, and I asked a LOT of questions. Kenny was always glad to go into whatever level of detail I wanted, and to explain until I fully understood. And he tried hard to work with me on price, given the size of the purchase (4 major components, plus installation) to get me the best "installed" price Midwest could possibly give. He even showed up on installation day to oversee, and called weeks after installation to check on me, see how well we liked it, etc. We'd already paid in full!! That last call really made him seem like a genuinely good guy, who thought of you as "his" customer and wanted to make sure you were happy, or perhaps it seemed like having an old friend in the industry. On installation day, we encountered a few problems, not caused by Midwest's crew, but mainly by odd physical shapes, locations, etc., in my house. Each one was handled very responsibly and professionally by Midwest. First, a concrete pad that the new condenser was to be set on had a crack in one side. It looked fine from the other side. They could have convinced me it would be OK, and used it anyway. Instead, they called back to the dispatcher, had her send another truck with a replacement, and the whole job was slowed down while we waited on a perfect replacement part, so they could be sure it had been done right. The most impressive, however, was installation crew Craig and Lonnie. Just getting the 28 year old "upstairs" furnace out of the utility closet seemed nearly impossible, but it's slightly easier by virtue of the fact they can destroy that old unit, getting it out, and it does not matter. But I literally did not see any way they could get the New unit into that space, and still allow me to have my "Air Bear" type thick air filter. They literally called salesman Kenny Duff, plus the owner of the firm!, out to my house to consult, half way through installation. To my amazement, Lonnie and Craig shoehorned it in there somehow, millimeters at a time, without damaging anything. They had to bolt components together, and complete final assembly, INSIDE this tight closet. Incredible to watch. But they did it, in 100 degree heat (July 2011), and it looks and works perfect. They even diagnosed a problem with the ductwork in my house, which had been malfunctioning (no kidding) since the house was built 28 yrs earlier. The builder's crew got lazy, or made a mistake, and no one knew for 28 yrs until Midwest found it. They fixed it for me, free of charge, as part of installation. I waited almost a year after installation to write this, to see if the equipment worked as well as they promised. It does. Inside is not only cooler, but much drier, and super comfortable now, with this new AC system. Heating works great, also. Both systems are very quiet. In sum, while no one likes to write a $14,000 check, this was probably the best money I've ever spent (at least "on a house"). I recommend Midwest HVAC highly. And if you use them, ask for salesman Kenny Duff, and install crew Lonnie and Craig (but perhaps they're all this good at Midwest?) I do hope this helps you to decide on what I know to be a very major purchase. Good luck with a big decision.
Description of Work: Midwest HVAC removed and replaced two furnaces, and also two A/C Condensers, and ran a new freon line for one of them through tight enclosed spaces, and purged the other condenser's line (which was completely inaccessible, but luckily did not have to be replace). They had to work incredibly h****** the upstairs furnace, to get it installed inside a tiny utility "closet" designed by the home builder for an older model of furnace. (Their crew basically had to assemble the components inside the closet, with about one inch to spare on either side.) All this in 100 degree weather. And they gave me a very fair price, too. I'm now the proud owner of two matching furnaces, and AC condensers, all top of the line Lennox Signature Series. Having lived with it through one full summer, and one winter, I feel qualified to report on how well it works. Fantastic. This set, combined with adding insulation to my attic, has improved performance 200%, both in summer and winter. I love the systems. And I am very impressed with Midwest HVAC, and certain members of its staff (see below).

Two or three years ago, another company did a poor fix of this problem. Since then, the drain has backed up about 4 times, creating the horrid, stinky mess you are imagining. Midwest assessed the problem and I gave the go-ahead to fix it right, for once and for all. So far everything is working well, and I can actually do a full load of laundry without causing a flood. Scott, the plumber doing the work, is an excellent worker and cares about giving you good value for your dollar. He is on time, calls to confirm arrival times, treats the customer with respect and interest, and is a congenial person, too. I trust his work ethic and honesty. I have a service contract with Midwest and can recommend them without reservation.
Description of Work: Jack-hammered basement floor to locate and fix drains for kitchen and utility room. Job took approximately nine hours, and two men. After replacing the broken line, they filled and smoothed the area with concrete. When the concrete dried, they returned to re-set the slop sink.

They did a good job. I spent about $7,500. I had received three bids, which were low-end, mid-range, and high-end respectively. I chose this company because I did not like the low-end offer and the high-end offer did not show enough value to spend the extra money on. The salesperson, that came out was good and very thorough. I thought he was very professional. So, I used this company. I thought they were really good. I had a couple of issues. They came out within a day to fix them. They did the installation very quickly. I needed the air conditioner installed quickly as my old air conditioner was not working. They did a good job. I thought they provided the best value for money, considering the warranty and the product that they handled. I thought they were reliable and they had the best brands. Their service is good and the product has been reliable; it has not broken down. I would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I bought a furnace and air conditioner from Midwest Heating Cooling & Plumbing LLC. They came out for a maintenance service on the air conditioner, six months ago. They will be doing the maintenance work on the furnace next week.

The actual job was trouble free. They came on time and left everything in order. They service men were very pleasant and had a sense of humor. Unfortunately I do not recall their names. The new installation looks much better than our old unit both the inside coil and outside unit. They leveled the site with gravel and replaced the pad. Everything seems to be working fine. I would recommend Midwest Heating Cooling and Plumbing.
Description of Work: We called Midwest because our air conditioner was not cooling. The service technician, Scott, said it needed freon added. He noted that it must have a leak since they had just repaired it for the same reason in May (by adding freon). Scott said there was a leak in the evap coil but I am not sure he did a leak test. He recommended that the sales rep quote us a new coil and a new air conditioner system since no new systems are being produced with R22 freon. Bob Epps provided a range of quotes from a SEER 15 Lennox to a lower cost SEER 13 Goodman. We went with the Goodman because if fit our price point and Bob "strongly" recommended it. So I hope it works! From internet research I asked about other installation options with the change over from R22 to R410. Once again, Bob was adamant that replacing the lineset was not required due to the size of our pipes and them being straight. He felt flushing and using nitrogen would suffice. Once again, we went with his expertise. I did get bids from two other Angie List service providers: Climate Control and Anthony PHC. I had a good experience with both companies and would consider them. However their pricing was significantly higher than Midwest. I was impressed with the expertise shared by the Anthony sales rep. However he got upset when I said that the price differential was significant. Anthony's quoted Goodman also but was $1000 over the Trane quoted by Climate Control. They both quoted replacing the lineset but that did not make- up the the significant cost difference. Midwest has a good reputation and long history in KC. And no complaints recorded by BBB for the past 12 months. We decided to stay with Midwest and trust their recommendations.

The sercviceman identified the furnace had a cracked and rusty heat exchanger. This was not a suprise as the furnace was old (1984) and visibly rusty. I began collecting bids from several companies. Midwest was first, and made an initial competitive bid, but was slow to respond as questions came up or requests for more information. I ended up using another company who had better customer service.

Midwest came out the same day we called, looked at our problem, gave us a quote. We scheduled the work and they arrived on time, did the work in a very timely professional manner, and the charge was as they quoted. They did not leave any mess behind after they did the work. We are very, very satisfied. We had previously checked with another company whose ESTIMATE was over twice as much as the repair actually ended up costing. Because the estimate seemed out of line, we checked Angie's List. Delighted that we did.

I called Sunday and left a message for a repair on a rental house. They called Monday morning before 8am. They expected someone would make it out in the afternoon so I left a credit card number for the repair. They called back before 9am. I did not expect them that early and did not get the call. Since it was a minor and inexpensive repair, they went ahead and made it and left me a message. SInce it was so inexpensive, it was nice to have the repair taken care of without having to send them back out. I am glad they made the judgement call to go ahead and do the repair.

I do not want to make any hypothesis on what happened whith our A/C problem. I just related the facts as they happened and what I know is that Midwest Heating and Cooling's repair just lasted 48 hours while the next fix by a different company lasted easely over 10 days and was still working the day when we changed all the system (I have all the bills/invoices to show this). I did not called back Midwest Heating and Cooling that Monday morning, because the tech told me and wrote on the invoice that freon added in units with unrepaired leaks was not warrantied and that we would probably have a problem again before the end of the season if we did not change these evaporator coils. We did not know the fix was only going to last less than 48 hours. The other thing I know was that when the second company came on Monday, the tech did show me right away (and I was with him all the time so I know he did not do it) that some caps were loose on the outside units (both of them). To be honest, I don't know what are these caps for, but they were loose. The tech said ithis was probably the cause of loosing all that freon so fast. I will be willing to trust him since the only things he did was to put back freon and close the caps, no other fixes and that kept for at least 10 days before we completly updated our systems. Anyway I won't be using Midwest Heating and Cooling anymore for my maintenance either, because if we had such a big leak in our systems I think it should have been discovered when they did the maintenance (just a month before our recent problem) in the first place.
Description of Work: First of all, I had Midwest Heating Cooling and plumbing do our furnace and AC maintenance last year. The A/C was serviced for routine maintenance by them on 6-22-11 so one month before the events I am going to report today. There was no need to add refrigerant in our units at that date according to the tech that came, and everything seemed fine. We had the home warranty add refrigerant in the main floor unit on 6-8-11 because it was not cooling the house well when we started the system for the season and I informed the Midwest Heating and Cooling tech about this. This last time when I called Midwest, it was outside my home warranty because I needed to have A/C as soon as possible, it was 95°F in the house and the home warranty coud not send anybody before the middle of the following week. We had guests and a toddler in the house visiting for a few days. The events reported here happenened between Friday 22nd and Monday 25th of July... We came back from vacation on Friday afternoon to find that our air conditionning for both units is not working. I call Midwest Heating and cooling because they do our maintenance and they have a 24h emmergency service. Somebody came the saturday morning to look at our system. That person told us that both our units needed freon and he added 7lbs in the main floor unit and 2.5 lbs in the 2nd floor unit. That person told us there was probably a major leak in the evaporator coil and that needed to be figured out. He told us that the freon will leak again and he did not know how long it will stay. He also told us that the freon he was adding was not warrantied since we did not repair the leak (he also said he couldn't do a leak search that day and he could not change the evaporator coil that day either and remember it is 95°F in the house). So we added freon and paid and the house cooled down. By Monday morning the house wasn't cool anymore. We called somebody else that came that Monday afternoon to tell us there was no freon left in the units (both of them). He also made me notice that some caps on the outside units were loose and that was probably what mainly caused the freon to get out in less than 2 days in the first place. That person did not fix any leaks in the inside of the house, he just added another 7 lbs of freon in the main unit and another 3 lbs in the 2nd floor unit, re-tighten the caps that were loose. The A/C woorked for at least another 10 days after this (and probably would have worked longer but see the end), cooling the house fine to 74°F despite having very warm days outside. That person did confirm the first diagnosis that there was probably a leak in the evaporator coil, but it said it was not so bad that you can loose 7lbs of freon in less than 48h or you will hear the freon blow out of the units.... Anyway, we've just completly updated our system (replace both inside and outside parts for both units) yesterday to get rid of these leaks problem. It did cost us about $7000 but in long run might be better than adding freon every month (or couple days depending on you does the job I guess). We did not use Midwest Heating and cooling to replace these units. I'll write a review on the people we used (and with which we were very satisfied with) in a few days, just to make sure everything is working all right with our new units.

Overall I was very disappointed in the lack of professionalism in the tech. I was not confident that the work was performed in a satisfactory way. I thought the company only cared about getting payed.
Description of Work: Midwest performed a service call related to hail damage to an airconditioning unit. I was told when I booked the appointment that payment would be required at the time of service even if the insurance amount did not cover their price. The reason I choose Midwest was because of the high rating on Angie's List. I had no problem with paying for the service and even called the insurance adjuster to inform that the amount would be more. When the technication arrived the first thing out of his mounth was that we would have to pay for the service call. To me this tells me that the company cares more about money than they do about a customer. He was to do a service and a condernser comb. I don't think he was going to do a diagonstic to check the freon levels until I asked if he was going to do it. Then he said he would.

They did a great job. I was never without A/C in this summer heat. They answered all of my questions, followed a diagram that they taped to a post in my basement (I could follow the job as it was completed). After another company came out and "diagnosed" the reason why our A/C unit died I called Midwest to give me a second estimate. Mike was a very knowledgeable and honest guy. He provided me with a straight-forward evaluation and followed through on everything he said he would. He even identified several things the initial HVAC company did not. The team that came out to do the work did a great job and in less time than they estimated. We are extremely happy with the results. These guys are a safe bet.

I needed to replace my heat pump and sold me an AC and what was important to me is that they didn't try to sell me the most expensive thing in existence. They understood I was on a budget so they were willing to work with me to get the job done within the limits of my buget. They did a fine job. It's worked perfectly since they put it in, I haven't had any problems at all.

Friday night my A/C died and I called them 5:30am Saturday morning, they called back around 7:30am and came out, checked everything for me, told me how much it would be to repair and I decided to just go ahead and get a new unit at that time. They called the salesman and he came out around 1:15pm to talk pricing with me. I had to leave shortly after that for a previous appointment and when I got home at 6:30pm my house was cool with the new working unit, and this was all on a Saturday!
Description of Work: They installed a brand new air conditioning unit for my home.

We received bids from three companies. All prices were competitive but the customer service for Midwest Heating and Cooling was exceptional. The first company that came out performed the KCP&L "Cool Homes" check on our 19+ year old units. The proper information was not given to KCP&L and only one of the old units passed the test for the rebate initially. After Midwest Heating and Cooling went the extra mile and called KCP&L giving them the proper information about the units, they both passed and we saved $1700. Many thanks to Kenny Craig who was our comfort expert! We had two complete systems installed in our home. An extra electrical line had to be installed in the attic as well as from the new unit into the basement through the foundation. The old furnace was lowered through the attic fan opening, down the stairs into the foyer, and across a hardwood floor. No damage to the railings, carpet or hardwood floor! New ductwork was added to correct a cold basement in the winter. It was amazing to see the teamwork. Midwest Heating and Cooling sent two crews so the major work could be completed in one day. Each person on this team was an expert. The workers were very respectful and professional. Everything was left clean and the old equipment was taken away. We could not be happier with our new AC and heating systems! Thank you to Midwest Heating and Cooling for an amazing job!
