We needed a new home air conditioner to replace a 10 year old heat pump that had developed leaks in the core. The salesman for Midwest was very helpful in helping us determine whether to replace the heat pump with another heat pump or switch to an air conditioner. He carefully asked questions on our preferences to help us determine what type of unit to purchase. He explained the technical terms in plain English so we could understand the different types of air conditioners and their prices. He even explained the differences between the unit he was recommending and the type of unit in a competitive bid. After we accepted Midwest's proposal, the two installers who came three days later were very efficient and knowledgeable and quickly installed the new unit, a new core for the furnace, and new tubing from the unit to the furnace. All in all, Midwest provided extremely professional services in all aspects of the job and I highly recommend them.

Larry, the technician, was very professional, did a nice job and cleaned up after himself. He installed 3 large faucets (kitchen, laundry room, bar) and 9 bathroom faucets as well as repairing the pressure relief valves on 2 water heaters. He also consulted with me on a request and was able to give me an estimate on the spot for additional work I want done soon. I was already going to use Midwest Heating Cooling & Plumbing since the prior house owners had a maintenance contract on the HVAC and my dealings with Larry (and his colleagues) sealed the deal. Since I have a maintenance contract for the HVAC, I got a 10% discount on the work performed. I appreciate their responsiveness and professionalism. I had a good HVAC company and plumber at my former home out of state and am glad I have found a company here to rely upon.

Bob Epps spent time with us explaining the new high efficiency furnace and air conditioner units. He was very knowledgeable and straightforward (no high pressure sales pitch). We chose Midwest over three other companies. (Their price was competitive with all other bids.) We were not home during the installation, but we could tell that the work was done expertly and all mess and debris were cleaned up. When we arrived home, the crew of two was finishing up. The technician explain the entire features of the system since our old furnace and ac units were definitely not high efficiency. A technician returned this spring to check out the air conditioning unit before we turned it on. Again, a very professional and explanatory discussion. We are very pleased with this entire process!

In 2007, after many weeks of bids and research of companies in the KC metro area, we selected Midwest Heating and Cooling to install a new Lennox gas furnace and AC unit. Over and over from companies I heard how important installation was of any unit, more important than the brand unit itself. We learned about variable speed motors, SEER ratings, getting qualified for the tax rebate, and even visited the Midwest shop to see their equipment. Every year since installation, I have paid for the Annual Service Agreement. According to my notes, this has been from $151 in 2009 (we received one year free with install) to $161 this year. We have paid now from 2009 at least $906 for maintenance appointments. Here is a play by play of the some of the events, for which I have receipts for, though I do not have all receipts: .June 6, 2007: AC and Furnace installed by 3 person crew, 1 of those being the owner's son (9 years old maybe?). After the install, I read the installation instructins and noted that the manual said the AC service panel should be installed such that it has x number of inches of clearnace and our did note. I asked the Sales guy about it, and he said it would be too much of a cost to reconfigure our AC in the proper direction and it didn't really matter anyways since it would still be serviced by Midwest since they installed the unit. Here are the notes I have from service receipts, but I'm sure I do not have every receipt to document the trouble that my husband says we have had every year: June 4, 2008: AC maintenance service, dampers set. Oct 24, 2008: Furnace maintenance service May 7, 2009: AC maintenance service Dec 23, 2009 Furnace maintenance service. Note says to "check history on fan". May 25th, 2010 AC maintenance service. note says "low chg due to Loose nut on bypass line - TXV" Dec 20th, 2010 Furnace maintenance service. Note says "Customer says water around furn, but nothing when I was there. Told them to watch and see". April 26, 2011 AC maintenance service. Note says, "Low on 410A, used leak detector found loose high pressure switch & by pass line on TXV. tighten, used bubbles to check. Pressure holding just fine. Leak search A coil & o/d coil", per TR, just warranty all of it and we will see what happens (notes indicate tried to charge 1/2 hour labor at $62.50. note from my husband says that per the technician, Tim will come out next year to look at coil if there is a problem again). March 15, 2012 AC Maintenance Check. Note says "Unit real low again, leak checked found leak on suction line @ compressor (fasten weld bad) Recovered repaired evacuated recharge 7 degree sub cool. Completed spring check" June 13, 2012 Service call. Note says "Replaced circuit board ch furnance because TXV replacement wasn't the problem" Cost $135. Note from sister-in-law at house at the time, "No payment today, he will need to order a new circuitt board & come replace ASAP, freon was a little to ohigh so he took care of that. He showed me that the valve was okay, but the reason it was freezing up was because the fan wsa not always kicking in due to a glitch in the circuit board. The new variable speed fans have difficulty if there are 'brown outs', flickering of power during t-storm & the like & the relay to circuit board is offset. Sept 9, 2012 Furnace maintenance service - new pad, set to winter, test opp ck drain, seer furance, clean flame and cx saftup, vis insp okay, heat exchanger. April 22, 2013 AC Maintenance Check: Notes say, "Set to summer, ck filter, ck & clean condasate drain, c temp drop 19 degrees, ck freon (ok) check elect, wash out unit." Oct 18, 2013 Furnance maintenance March 13, 2014 Service call, furnace motor blown. Change out, covered under warranty. $225 cost to us for installation. April 28, 2014 Service Call scheduled, told them AC turning on for short time, turning off, and starting over again. Informed dispatch we were tired of dealing with issues year after year, this was the eighth year since installation, said they would send out assistant manager. My husband was home at time of service call and said it was not the assistant manager. Technician says it appears the A-coil is leaking. Somewhere along the way, they converted our variable speed furnace to a regular furnace because the variable speed furnace has shown it consumes just as much energy as a builder grade furnace (this per a conversation with a representative at Lennox). We paid extra to have the variable speed furnace because of the promise of better comfort. We did not anticipate that better comfort means more money. That 7-year old motor has blown, so who knows what we have in there now and it was covered by warranty and frankly I'm too fried to try to find out what is in there. We am so disappointed with this install and ongoing maintenance issues for our furnace and AC. We spent nearly $7000 ($6993 to be exact) on the replacement of our furnace and AC and it was a purchase we spent a considerable amount of time researching for the best choice of unit and installation company. We just want Midwest to reevaluate the installation of this unit, reconfigure if that's what needs to be done, and stand behind their work. It seems that continuous problems year after year would be better handled by looking at the big picture of how this unit was installed rather than fixing one little piece at a time. I've indicated we would use the provider in the future if only they would offer to take a comprehensive approach to the problems we have had. I feel like we have no choice but to keep working with them since this is their unit and their work and for the investment we have in this unit, we don't see the appropriateness of paying someone else to fix their problem. Thank you.
Description of Work: Consistently EVERY YEAR now since Midwest Heating, Cooling, & Plumbing installed our Furnace and AC in 2007, we have turned on our AC to find that there is no freon in the unit. I'm beyond disappointed to have this happen every year. This has happened despite being a subscriber to the annual maintenance program. You would think that after 8 years of use and a problem every year, they would reevaluate the installation of the unit.

Response from Midwest Heating Cooling & Plumbing
I left a message for [member name removed] yesterday afternoon and she returned my phone call today. We have arranged to replace the source of her leaking refrigerant, the "A" coil at no charge to her as she has had several minor issues but ones that are irritating and can leave a customer with a bad taste in their mouth. Most of these items were covered by warranty. The [member name removed]have done everything correctly. They have had a maintenance contract and had the proper maintenance performed on their equipment. So none of this falls on their shoulders. As she has stated, we have responded to all of the problems she has mentioned and resolved them. The problem is there have been too many to be acceptable and are outside what we consider the "norm". Therefore, we are doing the right thing and replacing the coil. As far as the son of one of the owners being on the job, that is true. He was actually 16 at the time and he has shown some interest in following in his fathers footsteps. He is there strictly to learn and to help with minor tasks such as cleaning up, helping to remove old equipment and to run back and forth to the truck to get tools for the two professional installers on the job. Just as his dad helped his father when he was growing up. That is how family businesses such as ours operate. We are now celebrating 51 years of continuous family operation and we are proud and thankful to have served the Greater Kansas City Area for that amount of time. Besides, what better way for a young man to get an appreciation for what blessings his family has had and the hard work that goes into making a business work than to expose them to a proper work and responsibility ethics? I assure you that everything he did was supervised extensively. As much as we appreciate all of the positive feedback we receive on Angie's List, we also don't mind being called out when something isn't up to our high standards and expectations. We would like to thank [member name removed]for bringing this matter to our attention so that we can make it right and correct the situation. If anyone has a problem with any work performed by us, I would appreciate a call so that we can discuss your issue. My name is Bill Jones. I am the Operations Manager here at Midwest Heating Cooling and Plumbing and I can be reached at 816-943-8400.

Our positive experience started with Zack who came out and did a thorough estimate and then explained everything to us. We got a bid from a competitor but decided to go with Midwest. The installers were on time and explained what they would be doing. We had to leave during the installation and by the time we got home they were gone. If you didn't know that a major installation had taken place, you would never have known they were there. No mess, everything neat and tidy. Another plus is the ease with which we were able to get 12 mo. no interest financing. Everything was first rate. We are very pleased. Thank you, Midwest!

After searching Angie's List we got bids and information from two good heating & cooling companies. We chose Midwest because they had done work for my son in the past (also due to an Angie's List recommendation) and because their price was good. We liked their thermostat and we liked that their company was not as big as the other company we spoke with. We were able to get a free humidifier and a rebate on the total cost of the equipment from the Lennox company. They did a great job, cleaned up after themselves well and hauled off the old equipment. They will recycle what is useable from the old systems. We were happy with their work and plan to continue a maintenance program with their company.

We had someone out to give us an estimate on replacing our aging furnace/ac. The tech was very professional, and their prices were among the best we received. In the end, we went with another company only because of a personal referral and them being local to our area. If we had not received that referral, we would have definitely gone with Midwest based on the bid we received from them.

We have two HVAC units in our home. We had a humidifier install on one of the units a year ago by another company.
