I have a 3 seasons porch that was getting mold on the inside. In addition, the base boards were bulging out. I called Al Birkenmeier and Sons to determine what needed to be done and for a quote. Al recommended we demo the porch and rebuild it due to moisture getting in and causing rot. Once the demo began, I realized how correct he was and was surprised to see how rotted the wood was. The project included the demo and rebuild. In addition, we replaced the outside door, outside light, and on my request replaced the ceiling fan and the inside window that looked out onto the porch. The work was done in a timely and professional manner. The rebuild looks so much better than the original porch. I am so pleased with it. I had no idea who to call for this job and am so happy with my decision to contract with Al. I highly recommend him.

We hired Birkenmeier & Sons to install a custom door in our home office to help reduce noise as we continue to work-from-home during COVID. Al and Bobby arrived early every day, worked diligently, and completed the project on-time and on-budget, despite some unexpected obstacles caused by our home's construction. Excellent work overall, couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Look forward to working with Birkenmeier & Sons again very soon.

Despite battling COVID at the same time, Al and his team were hard-working, high-quality, professional, and very responsive. The final product looks amazing and we are extremely happy with how things turned out. If you are looking for a bargain-basement job, then look elsewhere, but if you are willing to pay for top-quality work from a top-quality contractor, then I highly recommend Al and his team! Work proceeded steadily and to schedule until COVID lockdown in the building forced work to stop for two months. Birkenmeier then resumed immediately once the lockdown ended. Everything went very smoothly, and any issues were immediately responded to by the builder.

Al and his team were even better the second time around. Al remodeled a kitchen in our previous house and recently moved into a new house that also was sorely overdo for a major kitchen remodel. Fortunately, we didn’t have to look hard for a great contractor. We gave Al a call and he got the team together and we quickly had a detailed plan on what needed to be done and what it would cost. Once again, Al only works with the best subcontractors who are just as committed to making our vision a reality as he is. He also worked closely with our kitchen designer at RSI to get the layout planned perfectly, even during the demo when we discovered uneven walls making cabinet fitting more difficult than expected. Al has the experience and knowledge that the inevitable hiccups and surprises during demo of an old house don’t phase him. Problems with the subfloor under our old parquet only set them back a few hours to replace the boards. Raising a structural beam so it didn’t hang as low was similarly something that Al had no trouble knowing how to do. Al also has a very ‘customer is always right’ mentality, if we saw or noticed something not quite perfect, Al would get the subcontractors back to fix it. He never brushed even the littlest detail off. If it was a small detail for us, it was still a big detail for him. We hope to not have to do another kitchen for a while, but will definitely be working with Al for any future remodeling projects we have.

Al has worked for various family members for over 20 years, and we've all had nothing but a positive experience. Al is by nature a perfectionist, so he tends to have exacting standards for his subs. His work is excellent, and he is prompt and responsive as well.

Al and his team did a wonderful job finishing our basement. From day 1, Al was constantly communicating with us, providing us with updates on timing, organized and brought excellent subs in to help with some of the work. We also loved that Al was there every single day performing the work with his other contractors as well. He was extremely trustworthy and positive. Al is the most conscientious contractor I have ever worked with; he is respectful of my time, property, family and expectations. His level of communication exceeds any other service providers that I have used. The quality of his work is unsurpassed. I appreciate his focus on detail. Given his performance, it is not surprising that this is approximately the 7th significant project that I have hired Al for within the last decade. My highest possible recommendation is that I would hire Al again. Our home was built in 1925 and we are committed to maintaining the architectural and structural integrity, I completely trust Al to help us do so. There are probably "cheaper" contractors, and definitely more "expensive" contractors - but I would not consider hiring anyone else.

We interviewed multiple contractors for a significant renovation/home addition project. Al set's himself apart from the pack with his professionalism, communication, attention to detail, and realistic advice. He gives an appropriate amount of time to discuss the project, listens to what you want, makes recommendations on the project, thoroughly bids the project (inclusive with his subs), and prepares a detailed a bid. Not all contractors will do this for you. Al is also honest and fair. He won't be your cheapest bid, but educate yourself enough to know that a cheap bid may have its problems and/or holes. Al understand the caliber of contractor you are consulting. Al is certainly at the top.

I have hired Al numerous times over the last decade for renovation projects large and small (mostly large). I wanted to clad the interior of my 3-car garage/gym in reclaimed wood to create a studio-like effect. As usual, Al’s meticulous finish skills surpassed my high expectations (including color-coded outlet covers). As usual, he identified a couple improper electrical issues left behind by other contractors. I would hire Al again, in fact I did, as we immediately rolled this project into a 5-bath renovation.

In 2014, Al Birkenmeier and his team helped us to remodel and update many features of our home in Kirkwood. It was a very big project, long overdue, and we were very pleased with the results. They did excellent, high quality work, communicated very well throughout the whole project and were honest and reliable. Since that time, we have occasionally noticed a problem with leakage around a new bay window, which was installed during the renovations. Al visited our home several times and did a number of repairs over the intervening years (to the caulking and siding) to try to prevent any further rain and water from getting in. He also had his crew refinish (sanding and painting) a window seat, which was warped due to the dampness. These efforts seemed to stop leaks for a while, but they were not a permanent solution. So Al contacted the window manufacturer and after many attempts was able to convince them that the window itself had been faulty and was leaking. The supplier agreed to replace the window, but we had to pay for the removal and installation of the new window. Al, despite a very busy schedule with much bigger projects, assigned crew to do this work for us immediately after the new window arrived from the supplier and he came by himself several times to make sure that the work was done well. We are happy to say that the new window is not leaking and things are looking very good and dry. We are writing now to bring this commitment and follow through, even long after the initial project, to the attention of potential new clients. Al did not leave us in the lurch when we had problems, even though it was a minor and not very interesting project to fix a leaking window. He is committed to his customers from the first day, until the job is completed to everyone’s satisfaction. This is a very valuable trait and one that makes us trust him and highly recommend him for any home repairs or remodeling. Thanks to Al and his colleagues for sticking with us, even many years later, and making sure that we have the quality of work and satisfaction that we need.

We were looking to replace the stair railing in our split level home to make it safer for our youg children. We had a wrought-iron railing replaced with a wooden with iron baluster railing. Everything with our railing replacement was smooth, timely, and efficient. The process was really quite seamless and organized with all parties who worked on the railing (carpenter and painter). They were able to give us a bid and complete the project in a timely manner at a busy time of year (the holidays). Time was taken to make sure we were getting exactly what we wanted and the work was very precise. They were responsive to our needs and made sure the work area was safe when our young children were present. The completed work looks great and I would definitely use them again.

Al was very knowledgeable about what to look for regarding damages the insurance company had not allowed for, and Al worked that through with the insurance company, to make sure we had what was needed. Before he began, Al went to extra lengths to make sure the dust and dirt from the demo did not affect any other part of the building. He had all the workers there in a timely fashion, all of whom he made certain to introduce to us before they began their work. Every one, without exception were professional and timely. The repair looks just like the original building area, inside and out! It's really nice to work with someone who is professional and friendly, and offers such amazing results. We have had Al help with several remodels and building projects, and will not consider another option for the next building project, whether new build or repair!

At all times Birkenmeier and Sons was professional , always communicate regularly, and when they said they would do it, it got done! The quality of the work is top notch!!!!!! I hired Birkenmeier and Sons to build a shed with siding, put up new columns, and add soffits and fascia. They worked quickly, efficiently, and did a thorough and excellent job. They stayed in contact with me on progress and stuck to their timeline. Four years ago I hired them to build a covered patio for our home and they did an excellent job on that as well. I would highly recommend Birkenmeier and Sons for your home projects.

Al and his team were a dream to work with. Al is a skilled contractor who knows the best in St. Louis. He assembled a great group people to handle our home renovation. They completed our home renovation project on time in 3 months and within budget. Al and his right-hand man started the project every morning at 6:30 am. Al held weekly meetings with us to go over work that was completed and next steps. They worked on schedule or ahead of schedule, always keeping us informed of surprises that they ran into (termite damage for example). Al was flexible and calm. Even when he hit snags he had ideas to make it work or suggestions to change our plan. We knew little to nothing about home remodeling and Al guided us along the entire project. He never made us feel dumb for asking questions and was always respectful and professional. After our renovation was complete, several of our neighbors used Al to complete their own renovation projects. They saw how hard he worked and the how beautiful his finished product was. If you are looking for a general contractor, you’d be lucky to hire Al. It’s been several years since our project was completed and we still call him with questions or advice. Just last week he sent out the glass company that installed our custom shower to re-attach a glass pane….free of charge. Do yourself a favor and give this company a call!!

Al Birkenmeier was the general contractor on our new custom build. He and his experienced subs did excellent work. Papa Gary, part of Al's own crew, did a great job keeping the site tidy and as clean as possible. Since this was our first new construction and custom designed , Al spent a lot of additional time and effort on planning and offering options to help us make the right decisions for long-term satisfaction. While that led to more "extras" than we anticipated, the well-considered upgrades were well worth it. Overall, very few problem issues arose and they were rectified well. He gave us his "builder's discount" with all the selections for plumbing, lighting, kitchen, etc. with the various recommended businesses we dealt with. Lots of builders pocket that difference! His communication skills, punctuality and reliability are top notch. He may not be the cheapest bid on some projects, but you get quality work. Experience matters in this business, he's a healthy 65 or so and has been at it for a long time. You don't want the young kids for this level of workmanship. Al's going to always recommend the best materials for the job (and yes you pay more for the quality stuff), and when he says he'll build your house or remodel like it was his own.....believe it! Thanks to Al and his guys for making our dream a reality!!

I rated the price "Good" not "Excellent" because it was not the lowest bid I received, but I would gladly pay the higher price to receive the same work excellence. I was intially impressed by Al Birkenmeier's punctuality, efficiency, and thoroughness at the estimate stage and that impression lasted thoughout the revonation process. I was particularly impressed with the rough carpenter crew who did most of the renovation to include raising and installing a new floor over the existing floor, installing the new windows & door, insulation, drywall, and siding. They were not only proficient, but always maintained a clean work area, and were very friendly and accommodating. I valued Al's constant contact with me either by phone, text, email, or visit inquiring as to my satisfaction with the project and/or informing me as what would be the next work activity.
