Thank you for your business, Ms. [Member Name Removed]! It was our pleasure to serve you. The technicians who worked on your plumbing, Corey, Tim and Chris all told me they enjoyed meeting you and being able to help fix the issues and replace some items. If we can ever be of service again, please let us know. We also provide service for heating and cooling, and it would be our pleasure to help in those areas, too. Best regards from all of us at MasterTech!

We had heard such great things about MasterTech but I won't use them again. I believe you should always get a written estimate. They ended up telling me that they charged us $110 for pulling the toilet in the basement and then reinstalling it. We could have done that ourselves if we had been told they were going to charge that much. Basically 5 minutes work and a $2 wax ring cost us $110. Extremely disappointed in this company.
Description of Work: The first individual that came on a Friday, snaked out our sewer line but could not get rid of the blockage. He pulled the toilet in the downstairs bathroom and tried to snake that way, but that did not work either. So, he said they'd have to dig up the line in the back yard but couldn't do that until the next Monday. He charged us $300 which included a $100 deposit on the Monday work, but did not tell us that there was a deposit included. He said that the remaining charges would run $400. Another guy came on Monday and at first said that he thought the blockage was under the basement and they'd have to break up the concrete. After a while, they decided to go ahead and dig up the back yard and found that someone had replaced the pipe in the yard with a thinner pipe than needed. They replaced the pipe that had been crushed and then the sewer lines seemed to run okay. They charged us $594 instead of the $400 we had been quoted. About a week later, the pipe clogged up again and we bought our own power snake and snaked it out. Found that there were tree roots in the line and it's worked fine ever since.

We did give her pricing, captured ( signature, quoted the work for the following day and honored the bid. I'm not sure why she's upset. We spent from 1:19 pm to late the first day then from 9:31 am to 3:24 pm the second day with a backhoe and two plumbers, a sewer camera, and a sewer machine. We believe the charges to have been approved and agreed to in advance which is our policy and we have the written agreements. I apologize. Ultimately, Customer satisfaction is our responsibility. Techs are professional and prompt, friendly. We had our sewer back up on Christmas night, cleaned up the best we could and called first thing the next morning. We have a 1950s house, clay pipes, and tree roots causing problems for us every year. Alex cleared out the obstructions for us and made sure that everything was draining properly. This company does seem to charge more than other plumbers, but their work is good and you can count on them to show up when you have an emergency.

The work performed was fine. In fact, I have had Master Tech do several plumbing jobs for us over the past 6 or 7 years and the work itself is ALWAYS done quite well and professionally, and that is why this review is such a shame. What I have observed over the years is that the technicians must be under enormous pressure to generate "add on" business. They nearly always try to find other things to criticize or insinuate are not up to standard, trying to get me to tell them to go ahead and do that work too. In the past this has been successful in a couple of cases, but it is getting really tiresome. This last time was actually inappropriate and somewhat frustrating. I told the tech repeatedly that I needed the drain closed as soon as possible and water back on as I have an elderly mother here. He first went to great lengths to tell me how the location of my access point wasn't done in newer houses (do I care?????). He INSISTED on running a video camera through the drains so he could show me roots and breaks -- which I told him they had done earlier and I did not want done. He then went outside to locate where the sewer line runs, and I told him I already had that information and didn't want him to take the time to do it. He THEN stayed to generate an estimate for me of work that I plainly told him I was not interested in having done, taking more time that I didn't have to waste on this. In addition to all this annoyance, he spent time bragging about his iPad app and trying to get my email for electronic communication. I finally had to be rather rude to him to get him to leave. Bottom line: I had a clogged sewer which was corrected quickly and I would have been happy. But I ended up annoyed and in possession of an estimate for $3500 in additional work. If I need this work done, I will NOT call MasterTech. A formerly excellent service company has jumped the shark in my book. (It has always been rather pricey, too, for things like leaking faucets, valve replacements, etc. They don't like to repair; they like to replace.)

We’re sorry to lose you as a customer. Sewers just don’t clog for no reason. If a large pipe will not drain water, there is a major reason why. The clog is a symptom of a larger problem. Like any good doctor, I require the Plumbers who work for me to not just address the symptom but to provide customers with solutions and cost for fixing the underlying problem, especially when it causes a house to flood with sewage. Unclogging a sewer is just addressing the symptom. We do spend enormous amounts of time training on this as an organization. We are professionals, not handymen. Most of our customers want a permanent professional repair and don’t tolerate sewage repeatedly backing up into their home. I know I would not tolerate it. Our charges seemed very fair and it’s likely that you will pay our competitors much more than the $99 we charged. Our company is licensed, insured. We send a fully trained plumber in a $60,000 fully stocked truck. He used a $7,500 electronic camera to find out why the sewer would not drain water. He located the buried underground problem in the pipe that will eventually cause future backups and gave an estimate for repair. To keep cost low and professionalism high, we send estimates from our software electronically so they can be filed for future reference. Something none of our competitors currently do. That’s why we requested your email. But if you don’t have one, we snail mail a hard copy using valuable paper, ink and labor. We would love to keep you as a customer. I apologize for the inconvenience. He arrived at your house at 12:33 and left at 1:48, just over an hour to perform difficult work, diagnose the underlying problem, suggest a permanent repair with several options and leave you with a written (electronic) quote as I require. He is an exceptional technician. I am proud of him and I wish your perception of our service had met your expectations. For that, I’m sorry. Russ

We only called about the water heater. They also inspected our house and convinced us that we needed to replace the regulator, which they did with a defective regulator, so they had to come back again. One of the repairmen later told me that we really did not need to replace the regulator, but we were told this after they had already removed the old one. In fact he told us that he did not even have one at his house. They also tried to sell us a water softener even after they checked the water and found it within normal range. In addition they tried to sell us a yearly contract for which we had to pay $20 a month. At first brush it was nice to have them check other systems in our house, but that led the the replacement of the regulator which did not need to be replaced. In my estimation the hot water heater should have been about a $100.00 repair, but we spent $500.00. If you use their services, make sure that you do not have them talk you into additional work or a service contract with out getting a second opinion.

Sir, I’m sorry for your experience. Plumbers are likely responsible for more than you may be aware. There are numerous health and safety principles we must balance to professionally maintain your plumbing systems. Here are three: 1. The water heater. The most dangerous appliance in your home. It is responsible for more fires, floods and explosions than any other item in your home. There are unseen forces like thermal expansion that not only needs pressure regulation, but thermal expansion provisions. 2. Cross Connection: As a plumber, we must make sure your toilet water doesn’t end up in either your drinking water or in your neighbors. Pressure regulation and reverse flow are primary concerns of plumbers. 3. Fire regulations: we must provide sufficient water distribution to your neighborhood in case of a fire. Codes require a minimum of 800 Gallons per Minute for 4 hours. To insure that type of water supply, municipal pressures and volumes must be increased way beyond what is useful inside a residential home. Therefore, the city MANDATES for good reason, pressure regulation. It prevents floods from toilets, rubber hoses and other smaller items like your ice maker line. We study Columbia’s water quality. It has many nasty containments, some known carcinogens. The city not only recommends your treat your water, they legally try to shift the responsibility to you through notifications and regulations. The water quality in Columbia degrades the rubber parts in your home’s plumbing systems. We HIGHLY recommend you treat your water first for the contaminents then for the destructive water quality. I require my professional plumbers to follow the city’s codes which are designed to protect your health and your neighbors. We make our customers aware of their needs, known and unknown. It's our customers' choice how they maintain their home. We provide the options, customers provide the decision. We would love to keep you as a customer and we still suggest you treat the pressure and quality of your water. Here's a list of EPA's contaminants: http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/index.cfm#List Russ 573-777-7777 rduker@centurytel.net

I contacted master tech from an online advertisement. I called in and they told me they would come look at the leaky bath tub faucet at my rental property for a $55 service fee. They sent a tech to rental house. He called when he was leaving (was in the home approximately 20 mins) and said my bill was $248. They did not contact me prior to doing any work. I had given them my credit card number over the phone earlier to cover the $55 fee. I complained and the technician called a manager who told me that he would apply the $248 for doing nothing towards the cost of letting them replace the valve. He did not communicate a fixed price prior to the repair. I agreed so that I did not just throw away the money to have them do the valve replacement. The next day they showed up 4 hours later than communicated. My renter had stayved home from work to let them in. They were there for approximately 3 hours to replace the valve. When all was said and done he called and said the bill for the day was $482.58. That seemed high for replacing the valve that cost $90, but i though at least it was done and they were refunding the money from the day before. Turns out they billed that above and beyond the prior days bill. I requested and itemized receipt for the repair and they refused. Instead they faxed me a generic sheet saying "standard tub/shower valve chrome = $710.41". I called the manager the next day and expressed my frustrations on how they were conducting business. He told me that part of the reason the bill was high was advertising costs. I explained that was not a billable item. I asked again to be provided an itemized bill. They still have never provided me an itemized bill. I called a couple of other reputable plumbers in the area to get an idea of what the repair should have cost. The results were between $250 (moen providing warranty parts) and $400 since it was originally an after hours call. They basically billed me twice what it should have cost! I will never do business with them again and do not reccomend them for any repairs.
Description of Work: I had a leaking bath tub faucet at a rental property. I had been by and replaced the cartridge myself, but it did not fix the problem. I contacted Moen and they said I most likely needed the valve replaced. I called master tech to come over and look at what needed to be done. On the phone and online it said they would give an estimate for $55 service fee.

We were really happy with Master Tech. They did a good job and was very efficient when they were at my home. If we have anymore work done I would definitely call them. They have a flat rate price on everything, so regardless of how long it takes you pay the same price which sometimes is good. In our case it kind of turned out to be a really simple fix, so I think on part of it I might have overpaid just because of the flat rate pricing.

It did not go well overall. I called Master Tech to cancel the appointment to install a new diverter. I then contacted a Master Plumber to install the new faucet. The cost from this plumber was much much lower than Master Tech and he did an excellent job. I have never heard back from the owner of Master Tech and by the way they did cash the $55.00 check. I am sure he will defend himself on Angie's list, but honestly folks, they get away with the highest prices in the industry only because people do not research well enough. You need a job done and you do not know how to do it so bingo you are in the snare. We naively called this company to have them look at our leaking garbage disposal earlier this year. True it did need to be replaced, true they supplied the garbage disposal, and true they did a good job, but at cost of $300.00 for parts and labor. Had I done my homework and found someone else (like the Master Plumber) who installed the second Moen faucet, it would not have cost as much. I have rated the plumber who I used and if you check my reports, you will use him over Master Tech every time. What could Master Tech do to make me happy? Return my $55.00!
Description of Work: This company was called after a 1st installer did a poor job installing a moen kitchen faucet. The faucet had a "thump" noise when either the hot/cold water was turned on. I was advised by Moen that typically this happens when a new faucet install is done, the lines are not drained and debri is caught in the diverter. I had removed debri from the aerator after the install. Moen sent out new diverter kit. When tech from Master Tech arrived he had a very difficult time removing the faucet, used a wrench to remove faucet and thus made two sizeable scratches in the faucet. I gave him the information Moen sent for the diverter to be removed and replaced and he was still having a difficult time. Unfortunately by the time he got to the diverter, we realized Moen had sent the "wrong" kit. I was in contact with Moen on the phone at the time the tech was here and they agreed to send the correct diverter overnight. It was not the tech's fault the wrong diverter was sent. He was a nice person and seemed to not want to charge for something he had not fixed, but upon calling his office was told he had to charge for his time. He agreed to a $55.00 service charge which we felt we had to pay as this is their policy if work is not done and I understand he did not have a choice in this matter. We did an online report for Master Tech at their request and detailed the above. The owner called was very apologetic and advised us this tech did not have very much experience except in new construction. I did not ask him why they send an unexperienced tech to do a repair, but I do wonder why. The owner offered to have another tech come out to install the correct diverter at the $55.00 charge which I felt was fair. After due consideration, I called Moen and they agreed to send a brand new faucet. I did not want Master Tech to come out again because in then conversation I had with the owner, he shared with me it could be my water pressure being too high and a myriad of other things. He told me their tech would measure the water pressure using an outside faucet etc. I felt very uncomfortable having them in my home again because I had been quoted what they charge for installing a new faucet and it is outrageous. I also felt they might be on a fishing expedition to tell me I need a water pressure regulator.

I called MasterTech plumbing to install two new Kohler one piece toilets. All they had to do was to disconnect the water line to the toilet, take off two small nuts holding the toilet down, lift the toilet up and carry it out, remove the wax seal, install a new $5.00 wax seal, set the new toilet down, tighten the two bolts and reconnect the water line. Thats all!! Nothing else to do as it was a new one piece toilet. The job should take about twenty minutes, two toilets forty minutes. At the most sixty minutes. His bid ( invoice # 22629 06/21/11 ) was $696.22 to install two toilets. $348.11 each. A rip-off. The dictionary says a rip-off is a fraud or swindle, something that is grossly overpriced. This was over priced. If you need a plumber call three for a bid for safety. I called Mr. Rooter and they charged me $358.82 to install two toilets. $179.41 each. MasterTech also wanted $239.70 to fix a dripping bathtub faucet. Another rip-off. This house is 10 years old with no plumbing problems. I had to give him $55.00 for this and he was here about 10 minutes. I'm 77 and all I can say is seniors look out and get bids from more than one companies.

These guys were down to earth and honest and answered all of the questions I had. They also covered all their bases.
Description of Work: We found orange burg pipes that were flattened and needed to be replaced, when we used the free camera service at Master Tech's last visit. It was quite obvious to all that if we replaced those ancient drain pipes our plumbing issues would end, but the quote was $2300.00... Worth it but we had to do something to come up w/ the money, because it had to be done and I called around and either they didn't have the equipment of the price was pretty close so I figured we were on the money. We did have to wait a few day because of weather and when they did come it still stormed on their heads, LOL! Nathan and Jeremy showed up and had the job done in about 2 hours and it was no small job. Our main water and gas lines were running right over top all inter twinned w/ the sewer line they were digging up. We decided to call "rain- delay" and "interference" and see if the last 5 feet or so will hold for a while? Those guys were soaked to the bone and they were so friendly, and they took $500.00 off for the short fall. I'm glad we chose Master Tech!

I did my homework and knew the details of the work that need to be done, so I didn't feel like I could be taken advantage of and I knew what was going on which the techs were great at explaining everything also. I loved that their estimates weren't like most, they were more like a preview of your bill, the were right on, that gave me a great feeling letting them do the work and knowing I'd be able to cover it and they even told me how long my estimate would be good for. Thanks Chad!!
Description of Work: Cody came and I explained that we had replaced all inside plumbing in Dec. and used a rented snake to clear the drain at that time but w/in days it was running slow again. Cody snaked drains and offered the free camera service which we took him up on and were not surprised to find that our outside sewer system was ancient and collapsing so now that we have come up w/ the funds to pay for this new problem I hope to have another great set of details soon! Chad ran the camera and both guys were polite and nice and even when my little ones were running about neither of them were the least bit thrown, that was nice too.

Things went as smoothly as I could hope for. It took a little while for the technician to show up but being a Saturday I was expecting this. He also was ending his shift and said my house was on the way home so he saved it for last. Considering we live 10 miles away from the main city that was totally understandable.
Description of Work: Water was backing up into our house from the floor drains in our basement. The basement floor was partially covered with water. It was a Saturday morning and Mastertech made it out to our house later that afternoon. I explained the problem and the technician said he would start outside and see if he could determine where the blockage was. He found the blockage quickly and unclogged it. Total time was less than an hour from start to finish. We have not had any problems since then. The technician was very professional and I feel there rates were fair considering it was a Saturday and we live 10 miles away from "town".

The outlet pipe which should have been draining my kitchen sink and dishwasher as well as the washing machine was overflowing with even the smallest of clothes loads. We called Master Tech and a young guy came out and cleaned the drain. It was left performing better than it ever had since we purchased the house. This was appreciated. I also did appreciate that he apologized when he spilled lots of black goo on some kitchen towels beside the dryer, though he didn't offer to help clean them off...

A slow drain in my basement turned into a back-up nightmare overnite. Called Master Tech Plumbing to help! They arrived in less than one hour from the time that I called. Thanks for a great report. We work hard to give great service at a fair price. We can also supply permanent repairs (without digging) for this problem which typically reoccurs every year.

We called them out to fix it. There was water on top of the water heater and they put plastic on top of the wires to protect them. He tried to sell us a new water heater as well. He charged us 302.00 for 30 minutes of work. The leak was not fixed on top of it all. I called to complain to them about the charge and they said that this is what they charge. They would not do anything about it. Another plumber came out and fixed the leak by puttting in some putty and tightening things up and only charged us 140.00 for 10 minutes of work. The work was done right that time. We would not recommend this company.
Description of Work: Our hot water heater was throwing our breaker.

*The call came in as an emergency call on the weekend. We charge an extra $55.50 for this service. The plumber who poorly installed the heater originally was not available to fix the leak or the dangerous electrical situation he had caused. Nor was he available to restore their hot water on the weekend. *There appeared to be an intermittent water leak somewhere on the heater. It was not leaking where we were there. *Our technician informed the customer of their options and THEY chose not to replace the heater but instead to monitor the heater for future leaks as mentioned in the original complaint. We felt, since we could not visibly see the intermittent leak, and because of the current expense for the electrical repair and future warranty and danger, the need for a return trip, we correctly recommended a new heater. We felt, and still do feel that, a new heater would have been a good value. We find that shortcuts many times cost more in the long run. Our technician had the customer agree in writing to the price and the work BEFORE the work was begun and sign our invoice. *The technician then fixed a VERY DANGEROUS electrical connection with the water heater that could have electrocuted someone because it was submerged in water by their original, currently unavailable plumber who should pay both invoices, his and ours. According to our GPS system, the tech left for the job at 11:26 AM, arrived at 11:38 and departed at 12:43. That's 1 hour and 17 minutes; not just the 30 that the member remembers. *Feb. 9th: The member's husband called and we discussed these issues. We also adjusted out bill in goodwill. We understand that it's frustrating to have a leak that's intermittent. *In goodwill, we gave them a $50 service agreement and returned an additional 15% of the cost of the invoice, $45.29. Many times pressure fluctuations will allow a small but dangerous leak to be intermittent, such was the case here. I feel that we have done everything we can to help the members during an emergency situation. We could have replaced the heater correctly but the members chose a different option. Now in hindsight they wish to choose a different option but at someone else's expense...I suggest that since their original plumber installed it incorrectly, he reimbursed the members for our invoice and repair the intermittent leak for free. That seems fair to me. - Russ Duker, President

My faucets in the kitchen and one bathroom were not working. The flow of water was very low. The technician said I had sediment in my lines. He cleaned the bathroom faucet, replaced the insides of the kitchen faucet (was less than a year old) replaced the washing machine hoses and replaced the insides of a shower facet with parts from a newer model because he said he could not get the parts for that particular faucet. Two weeks after the work was done the faucets were worse than before. I had a friend’s personal plumber look at my problem. He said I had sediment in my water heater and it would continue to cause problems until it was replaced. He replaced the water heater and blew out the lines and replaced the inside of the shower faucet with the proper parts for $135 plus cost of the water heater. It has worked great ever since. He told me once or twice a year the water heater needed to be drained so I would not have any problem. The Master Tech technician never mentioned anything about the water heater needing replaced or worked on.

Master Tech Plumbing had someone out the same day. He said the leakage was caused by deteriorating grout and caulking. He stayed about 10 minutes and charged $55.00 for a service call. We replaced grout and caulking. The leaking continued. Finally called in a real plumber who quickly discovered the washer in the hot water tap needed to be replaced. He replaced it and no more leaks. Seems a simple diagnosis that was apparently beyond MasterTech's level of expertise.
Description of Work: Plumber was called in because of leakage from bathtub into the basement below.

Sorry, I wish you would have contacted us about the continued problem. We would have come back at our expense and looked again. It's no excuse, but it's hard to see leaks behind walls. Typically it is the tile leaking if there is no visible leak. Also, some leaks only show up after 10 minutes or more of running a shower. It sounds like we missed this and I'm sorry. We would have, however, come back had we been asked. I cannot control all mistakes but I can control how I respond to them as long as I'm aware of them. I'm sorry.

Technician showed up on time and explained their pricing system. It is very similar to the auto repair industry. They have preset prices for each type of service. Prices are fixed and independent of actual time required to do the job. He gave me a reasonable quote and proceeded to install the system. He had all required materials with him and was done within 2 hours. No problems for over a year now. The installation was in a small utility closet and required some creative thinking on the tech's part. He double checked all connections after restoring the water pressure and even checked water pressure with a gauge on outside spigot.
Description of Work: Installed piping and connections for water softener and whole house water filter.
