This review of MasterTech plumbing is both for a specific job and for the dozen times I have used them over the past ten years.
I live in a 60-year-old house that is in great shape except for plumbing issues. On this occasion, a drum trap in the basement ceilingwas clogged, causing the upstairs tub to back up. I had been warned by previous plumbers that this would likely cause me issues. I called MasterTech and got a plumber to come out. He explained all my options, from simply cutting out the drum trap to running new pipe from the tub to the stack (since it's rusting in spots). I chose the cheapest option so that they wouldn't have to tear out much of my basement ceiling, Like usual, there was no pressure to choose any other option. While he was here, I also had him take out a leaky saddle valve (which runs cold water to the refrigerator) and replace it with a high-quality valve. Work was performed that same day. I came home from work and everything was done.
I have used MasterTech repeatedly over the past ten years. At times it was for simple jobs, like snaking the roots that grow into the clay pipes in my backyard. However, I have also had them replace an entire run of pipe after the pipes froze and burst one winter, run new pipes to a downstairs bathroom due to leaks, work on disconnecting a water softener, replace a shutoff valve behind a toilet after I ruined it by trying to fix it myself, and add a cleanout to the main stack for easier access. They have ALWAYS been friendly, professional, and prompt. I appreciate that they are willing to explain my options and even answer my questions since I'm usually curious about how it all works. I have tried other companies, but none of them matched the professionalism of MasterTech.
I have had one or two problems (e.g., a plumber forgot to reconnect the upstairs bathroom water after working on the basement bathroom), but these were corrected quickly. Overall a quality company.

We are remodeling our kitchen and when a delay for installing the base cabinets that cascaded into the delay of the countertops - we needed a temporary sink, fast. These guys were prompt and onsite to provide a quote when promised. The work was excellent and completed in 3 hours. The downside is the cost; apparently there is high overhead for trucking around all those plumbing parts. I needed a quick turn-around so I took the hit on cost. I would use this company again only after I have shopped to compare prices.

The plumber was very responsive, on time and personable. However, before doing what I called him for, to simply to replace the flapper since the chain had broken, he first gave me the option of changing the entire mechanism at a cost well over $200. I didn't think this was necessary so told him to just fix the flapper. He did so which took less than 5 minutes and then presented me with a bill of $139.62. I didn't say anything but thought this was excessive, to say the least.
Response from MasterTech Inc
"We do like to give customers choice. Our plumber gave (Member name removed) several choices. He firmly requested that we only change the one rubber part; It wasn't that much more to replace all the wear items while we were there. We know from experience that in the long run, quick fixes like these are ultimately more expensive and is a kin to putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. I'm grateful that we were able to satisfy (Member name removed) with responsive, personable and timely service. However, I wish we would have made (Member name removed) completely happy. It's expensive to provide professional labor, Insurance, warranties, inventory and all the overhead that goes into a business. I would like to thank (Member name removed) for his business and his service to our community. Russ"

He came to fix the problem and after spending over $300 on the issue, it still wasn't working. I hired a diswasher repair man and he came out on to tell me that the hose needed adjusted.

I asked my mother if the owner had called her back yet (this was about 6 hours later.)  She said he had not, but my mother is not in good health was still shaking and very upset about it, so I called Master Tech and asked them to please have the manager/owner call her back ASAP.  The owner, Jerry, called her back within 5 minutes.  I answered the phone and began to tell him the events of the last few days.   When I told him that it all started with a flusher that wouldn't flush and that the plumber did not lift her lid yet to fix the reported problem, but he immediately shook her toilet FIRST, Jerry stopped me and said, "were you there, and did YOU see him shake her toilet."  I told him that I was not there, but my mother was right beside me and told him to talk to her because she WAS there, and she could give him the details."  She didn't get very far into her conversation, and she was not even allowed to finish telling him what happened before I heard her say, "I have never been treated so badly by any business in my life."  She was teary and shaking, so I asked her to give me the phone (...she's had 2 heart attacks and I was afraid she was going to have another one!)  I asked Jerry what was going on.  He said that his plumber didn't shake her toilet, which point I explained to him that my mother was not lying and that I could give him a list of folks who were at my mom's house on a routine basis to vouch for the fact that she was not lying and that her toilet was never loose before, but Jerry said she was not telling the truth, and that he didn't like her as a customer and would give her her her money back if she would just go away.  I told him that was great, but what was he going to do about the water all over her floor now, and he told me to tell her to "call somebody else" and hung up.   When my husband came home, he called WALLACE PLUMBING  to fix the problem.  They sent out a real, certified plumber, and said he could not believe what he saw.  They fixed her ENTIRE toilet, even the broken part that Master Tech told her would cost an additional $250.00 (total cost $418), but Wallace Plumbing repaired everything for $137.00.  Now her flusher works, and her toilet doesn't leak!   When I shared my story with all of my co-workers I was told that Jerry (the owner of Master Tech) has had to change the name of his business several times because he runs a racket.  For the record, WALLACE PLUMBING has been in business for over 30 years, and has never had to change their name for a reason.  DO NOT LET MASTER TECH PLUMBING IN YOUR HOUSE.  It was a like watching a Dateline episode only my own mother was the victim in this case.    Our next phone call is going to the better business bureau.   These people are crooks....make that rude, mean crooks.  Master Tech did give my mother her check back....it had not even been cashed yet.

Response from MasterTech Inc
"Of course we wish we could satisfy every customer. We did offer her elderly mother several options from replacing the toilet with a handicap toilet to just making minimal repairs. We did offer her options for repairing the leaking toilet. In the end, we made two trips and refunded her money promptly when she was not satisfied. The plumber that serviced (Member name removed) mother is well known to be very respectful. It would be way out of character for him to treat anyone with disrespect. I listened to the recorded call between Jerry and (Member name removed). Jerry treated her with utmost respect in both word and tone. Russ Owner MasterTech"

The service tech was prompt, professional and courteous. I understand that MasterTech has somewhat of a reputation for overselling services, and my technician did have a long list of questions he was supposed to ask me, but he could tell that I was more knowledgeable that most, and just skipped that part! I was apprehensive about using them after reading other reviews, but my experience was quite positive.
Response from MasterTech Inc
"Thanks for the positive review. We don't always get it right but we always make it right. Sometimes we can't control everything that happens in the field but we can control how we respond to any mistake we make and we are determined to correct mistakes on our part. If anyone ever has a problem with MasterTech, they can call and discuss it with us and we will correct any error. Technicians are trained to give each customer choices, answer questions about the features and benefits of each service and then to let the customer decide which service is correct for them. Again Patrick, thanks for taking the time to leave a positive review. Russ"

We had heard such great things about MasterTech but I won't use them again.  I believe you should always get a written estimate.  They ended up telling me that they charged us $110 for pulling the toilet in the basement and then reinstalling it.  We could have done that ourselves if we had been told they were going to charge that much.  Basically 5 minutes work and a $2 wax ring cost us $110.  Extremely disappointed in this company.
Response from MasterTech Inc
"We did give her pricing, captured ( signature, quoted the work for the following day and honored the bid. I'm not sure why she's upset. We spent from 1:19 pm to late the first day then from 9:31 am to 3:24 pm the second day with a backhoe and two plumbers, a sewer camera, and a sewer machine. We believe the charges to have been approved and agreed to in advance which is our policy and we have the written agreements. I apologize. Ultimately, Customer satisfaction is our responsibility. Somehow I failed. Here's the invoice below. Clearing Sewer from Toilet to Restore and Verify Flow Complimentary priced, code required, 2-way exterior clean-out for slab house. Techs are professional and prompt, friendly. We had our sewer back up on Christmas night, cleaned up the best we could and called first thing the next morning. We have a 1950s house, clay pipes, and tree roots causing problems for us every year. Alex cleared out the obstructions for us and made sure that everything was draining properly. This company does seem to charge more than other plumbers, but their work is good and you can count on them to show up when you have an emergency.

The work performed was fine. In fact, I have had Master Tech do several plumbing jobs for us over the past 6 or 7 years and the work itself is ALWAYS done quite well and professionally, and that is why this review is such a shame. What I have observed over the years is that the technicians must be under enormous pressure to generate "add on" business. They nearly always try to find other things to criticize or insinuate are not up to standard, trying to get me to tell them to go ahead and do that work too. In the past this has been successful in a couple of cases, but it is getting really tiresome. This last time was actually inappropriate and somewhat frustrating. I told the tech repeatedly that I needed the drain closed as soon as possible and water back on as I have an elderly mother here. He first went to great lengths to tell me how the location of my access point wasn't done in newer houses (do I care?????). He INSISTED on running a video camera through the drains so he could show me roots and breaks -- which I told him they had done earlier and I did not want done. He then went outside to locate where the sewer line runs, and I told him I already had that information and didn't want him to take the time to do it. He THEN stayed to generate an estimate for me of work that I plainly told him I was not interested in having done, taking more time that I didn't have to waste on this. In addition to all this annoyance, he spent time bragging about his iPad app and trying to get my email for electronic communication. I finally had to be rather rude to him to get him to leave.  Bottom line: I had a clogged sewer which was corrected quickly and I would have been happy. But I ended up annoyed and in possession of an estimate for $3500 in additional work. If I need this work done, I will NOT call MasterTech. A formerly excellent service company has jumped the shark in my book. (It has always been rather pricey, too, for things like leaking faucets, valve replacements, etc. They don't like to repair; they like to replace.)

"We’re sorry to lose you as a customer. Sewers just don’t clog for no reason. If a large pipe will not drain water, there is a major reason why. The clog is a symptom of a larger problem. Like any good doctor, I require the Plumbers who work for me to not just address the symptom but to provide customers with solutions and cost for fixing the underlying problem, especially when it causes a house to flood with sewage. Unclogging a sewer is just addressing the symptom. We do spend enormous amounts of time training on this as an organization. We are professionals, not handymen. Most of our customers want a permanent professional repair and don’t tolerate sewage repeatedly backing up into their home. I know I would not tolerate it. Our charges seemed very fair and it’s likely that you will pay our competitors much more than the $99 we charged. Our company is licensed, insured. We send a fully trained plumber in a $60,000 fully stocked truck. He used a $7,500 electronic camera to find out why the sewer would not drain water. He located the buried underground problem in the pipe that will eventually cause future backups and gave an estimate for repair. To keep cost low and professionalism high, we send estimates from our software electronically so they can be filed for future reference. Something none of our competitors currently do. That’s why we requested your email. But if you don’t have one, we snail mail a hard copy using valuable paper, ink and labor. We would love to keep you as a customer. I apologize for the inconvenience. He arrived at your house at 12:33 and left at 1:48, just over an hour to perform difficult work, diagnose the underlying problem, suggest a permanent repair with several options and leave you with a written (electronic) quote as I require. He is an exceptional technician. I am proud of him and I wish your perception of our service had met your expectations. For that, I’m sorry. Russ"

We only called about the water heater.  They also inspected our house and convinced us that we needed to replace the regulator, which they did with a defective regulator, so they had to come back again. One of the repairmen later told me that we really did not need to replace the regulator, but we were told this after they had already removed the old one. In fact he told us that he did not even have one at his house. They also tried to sell us a water softener even after they checked the water and found it within normal range.  In addition they tried to sell us a yearly contract for which we had to pay $20 a month. At first brush it was nice to have them check other systems in our house, but that led the the replacement of the regulator which did not need to be replaced. In my estimation the hot water heater should have been about a $100.00 repair, but we spent $500.00. If you use their services, make sure that you do not have them talk you into additional work or a service contract with out getting a second opinion.
Response from MasterTech Inc
"Sir, I’m sorry for your experience. Plumbers are likely responsible for more than you may be aware. There are numerous health and safety principles we must balance to professionally maintain your plumbing systems. Here are three: 1. The water heater. The most dangerous appliance in your home. It is responsible for more fires, floods and explosions than any other item in your home. There are unseen forces like thermal expansion that not only needs pressure regulation, but thermal expansion provisions. 2. Cross Connection: As a plumber, we must make sure your toilet water doesn’t end up in either your drinking water or in your neighbors. Pressure regulation and reverse flow are primary concerns of plumbers. 3. Fire regulations: we must provide sufficient water distribution to your neighborhood in case of a fire. Codes require a minimum of 800 Gallons per Minute for 4 hours. To insure that type of water supply, municipal pressures and volumes must be increased way beyond what is useful inside a residential home. Therefore, the city MANDATES for good reason, pressure regulation. It prevents floods from toilets, rubber hoses and other smaller items like your ice maker line. We study Columbia’s water quality. It has many nasty containments, some known carcinogens. The city not only recommends your treat your water, they legally try to shift the responsibility to you through notifications and regulations. The water quality in Columbia degrades the rubber parts in your home’s plumbing systems. We HIGHLY recommend you treat your water first for the contaminents then for the destructive water quality. I require my professional plumbers to follow the city’s codes which are designed to protect your health and your neighbors. We make our customers aware of their needs, known and unknown. It's our customers' choice how they maintain their home. We provide the options, customers provide the decision. We would love to keep you as a customer and we still suggest you treat the pressure and quality of your water. Here's a list of EPA's contaminants: http://water.epa.gov/drink/contaminants/index.cfm#List Russ 573-777-7777 [email protected]"

I contacted master tech from an online advertisement.  I called in and they told me they would come look at the leaky bath tub faucet at my rental property for a $55 service fee.  They sent a tech to rental house.  He called when he was leaving (was in the home approximately 20 mins) and said my bill was $248.  They did not contact me prior to doing any work.  I had given them my credit card number over the phone earlier to cover the $55 fee.  I complained and the technician called a manager who told me that he would apply the $248 for doing nothing towards the cost of letting them replace the valve.  He did not communicate a fixed price prior to the repair.  I agreed so that I did not just throw away the money to have them do the valve replacement.  The next day they showed up 4 hours later than communicated.  My renter had stayved home from work to let them in.  They were there for approximately 3 hours to replace the valve.  When all was said and done he called and said the bill for the day was $482.58.  That seemed high for replacing the valve that cost $90, but i though at least it was done and they were refunding the money from the day before.  Turns out they billed that above and beyond the prior days bill.  I requested and itemized receipt for the repair and they refused.  Instead they faxed me a generic sheet saying "standard tub/shower valve chrome = $710.41".  I called the manager the next day and expressed my frustrations on how they were conducting business.  He told me that part of the reason the bill was high was advertising costs.  I explained that was not a billable item.  I asked again to be provided an itemized bill.  They still have never provided me an itemized bill.  I called a couple of other reputable plumbers in the area to get an idea of what the repair should have cost.  The results were between $250 (moen providing warranty parts) and $400 since it was originally an after hours call.
They basically billed me twice what it should have cost!  I will never do business with them again and do not reccomend them for any repairs.

We were really happy with Master Tech. They did a good job and was very efficient when they were at my home. If we have anymore work done I would definitely call them. They have a flat rate price on everything, so regardless of how long it takes you pay the same price which sometimes is good. In our case it kind of turned out to be a really simple fix, so I think on part of it I might have overpaid just because of the flat rate pricing.
