I had a positive experience with MasterTech and their technician, Anthony Lenyard. He is very polite and professional. He did a thorough inspection and made some recommendations. He even took care of installing an extra faucet that I requested. It will make gardening much easier for me. I am so excited to begin my Spring plantings!
Description of Work: He recommended a Flow Tech electronic descaled, which I decided not to go with at this time. He also recommended replacing two, I think they are called, flow control valves because mine were so old and difficult to turn. I also requested that he install an extra faucet to make it easier to do my outside gardening.

I gave my Wife the information for MasterTech from the water heater vendors website so she could call and setup and appointment. She call right after I left for work on Wednesday. The person that answered the phone said someone could be at the house shortly and that there would be a $55.00 trip charge for evaluating the warranted water heater. Corey arrived around 9:15 and preceeded to diagnose the problem. In a short time he determined that the thermal expansion tank bladder had ruptured due to excessive water pressure. He recommended replacing the main water supply pressure regulator, restrict the pressure to approximately 60 PSI and replace the expansion tank. He quoted my wife a price. At that point she tried to call me at work to ask me if I thought the quote was fair but was unable to contact me. She reluctantly authorized the repair and the work was completed in short order. The work order shows that it was completed at 10:30. Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes total since Corey arrived. When I arrived home I reviewed the invoice and the work that was done and nearly fell over. $720.67. I looked up the replacement parts and their cost retail. Pressure regulator was $95.20 and the expansion tank was $33.64 for a total of $128.84 + $55.00 trip charge. That means that the labor charge was $536.83 for an hour. This is absolutely nuts! I have no problem with the quality of the parts or service but feel that my wife (who is a senior) was over charged. Charges were not accounted for in detail. Just a description of work and a price. If she would have had a breakdown on the replacement parts she definately would have questioned the total repair price. We will never use this company again and will tell everyone we know our experience.
Description of Work: Called because water heater was leaking from pressure relief valve. Water heater brand name is A.O. Smith. Water heater is under warranty and MasterTech is an authorized repair service company listed on A.O. Smith's website. Replaced house water pressure regulator, adjusted pressure and replaced thermal expansion tank on water heater.

Mr. [Member Name Removed], Thank you for your feedback regarding our pricing structure. I have reviewed your invoice and the pricing is accurate. Our technicians don’t calculate the cost of the repair; we use a national price guide software where the technicians select the tasks they are performing and the software displays the pre-determined price based on allowances for time, materials, fuel, equipment, overhead, etc. This allows us to give you a fixed price rather than an estimate that could change after the work is completed. Our technicians have completed these tasks many, many times and have all the needed parts, tools and equipment on their truck, so they are able to complete the work in minimum time. However when a task is completed quickly and efficiently it can be misleading as far as the value of the repair. If the technician had to leave your home and go pick up the parts then return to do the work, it would take a lot longer and you would have to pay for that, and have to wait longer for the repair to be completed. We do have most of the required parts available to the technician on his truck, which makes the service call more efficient for you, and him, in terms of the time it takes to complete the job. However, there are some up-front costs associated with inventorying the parts ahead of time. As a company we have already paid to have the parts ordered, inventoried, stocked in our warehouse, and then stocked on our trucks. All this happens behind the scene before the technician arrives at your home. Regarding your initial specific plumbing concern, another company most likely would have showed up and replaced the temperature and pressure relief valve on the water heater that was leaking for $150-$200 but may not have addressed the two problems that were causing the valve to leak; the new T&P valve would leak in the future, thus requiring another service call and further charges. The PRV in your home had failed and the water pressure was 110 PSI which is extreme, and the thermal expansion tank had failed, causing an even further increase in pressure when the water was heated. Part of what is paid for is the expertise and service that MasterTech provides to determine the root of the problem, not just to fix the symptom. Thank you for allowing MasterTech to serve your plumbing needs.

They did fine but then I discovered that I had a home warranty so the next time that I need something, I have to go through my home warranty and I could use them. MasterTech was fine, they were good, and they took care of my problem. The price was as advertised. I don't have anything to compare it to and the work was simple. The people were very nice, the guys were good, and the company was responsive, and they came on time.

They were reasonably priced, punctual, quick, and professional. They went out of their way to make it a good experience. For example, there was a small tree in the way of the line and I was upset when I learned they'd have to take it out. On their own, the workers decided to try to dig that part of it without moving the tree. One man got down in the hole and held it up while the others replaced the line. It worked and the tree is still alive and healthy! That was really cool. Also, a few weeks after the job was done, the workers were doing another job in the neighborhood and decided to come by and use their equipment to level the ground a bit more for us. They were great and considerate and I'll use them again.

When I called MasterTech and talked with the office manager I briefly described our problem and told her this was going to be a difficult job since it required crawling around in our hot attic and replacing a gas line down the wall into the fireplace. She said "Ok, I will send out one of our Master Technicians". MasterTech sent Chad. Chad was extremely nice, knowledgeable and he did a wonderful job. He initially came out to my house to view the problem and then we discussed what different steps we could take to try and fix the issue. He gave me a estimated quote. I will have to say the price was more than other quotes I had received. However, after Chad & I discussed the problem I knew right away he had experience with gas lines and knew how to fix it properly. I am willing to pay more for great work! Chad called the MasterTech office for me and scheduled the appointment to come back out to fix our gas line. I will definietly use MasterTech again. Thank you Chad.

I needed it done right away and they were able to come the next day. Everyone who charges reasonable prices was booked. He looked at the work and gave me an estimate of $1140. I told him to take his show-up money and go. He said he would talk to his boss. They finally came down to $800 which in my opinion is more than double what it was worth. He did the repairs and it took about 6 hours but only because the repairman was milking the clock. I went down once and saw that the shut off valve replacement was done. Later I went down and he had cut part of a new copper pipe in half. I came back later and he had put a fitting in to put the pipe back together? If you need service done fast you're going to pay more than if you plan ahead.

They cleared the drain, and then talked me into high pressure cleanout of the drain, which would restore it to ?brand new? condition. After washing out the pipe, they informed me they?d run a camera for free just for an overall checkup on the line. Lo and behold, a major problem was found during this camera scoping of my drain. I had some rusted out pipes, they said, and I would need to tear the floor up and replace all pipe connections? $3700. Once they had convinced me that this needed attention, they scheduled an appointment with me and told me they would need a $300 deposit if they were going to do the work. I wrote them a check, signed what I thought was an invoice or receipt, and they went on their way. Over the next week I got the advice from several different people, including a plumber, to get another opinion/quote because $3700 sounded way too high. I did. The first plumber outright told me that "if what they said was wrong here is wrong, I?m in the $2500 range". The third plumber I used actually used a camera again, and said he was not convinced that there was anything but some rust buildup in the pipes. His exact words? ?if this was my house, I?d leave it.? It is worth noting also that both of these men knew what company I used before being told, and had nothing but cautionary tales to tell. So, naturally I called Master Tech to tell them that I will not be needing their services, as it has become debatable as to whether or not the problem they reported to me was really a problem. It was at this time that they informed me this was a nonrefundable deposit. So, with no warning, no discussion, no informative session of any kind, they collected $300 from me to do a job that did not need done, that regardless of the outcome, they intended to keep without telling me as much. So even when I figured out what was going on and aborted the whole thing, they are still $300 richer. The one thing I could/should have done differently is read the form that I signed more carefully. We were settling up, I assumed it was a receipt or invoice, not that I was donating $300. Had that been communicated AT ALL, I would have said h*** no and proceeded with other opinions/estimates. I am still holding out hope that they will do the right thing and return the money, as they do have a satisfaction guarantee, but that remains to be seen. I do know this, paying $625 to get your drain cleaned out and be told you have a problem that isn?t a problem is not very satisfying. !!!UPDATE April 2015!!! The company contacted me and said if I take down my negative reviews on FB and here on AL, that they'd return half of MY MONEY! I agreed, cashed the check for $150.00 to reclaim part of what was mine, and then informed them that I'd be happy to truthfully amend my reviews when I have all of my money in hand. After asking numerous times and reminding them that I was never shown a signed document that bound me to a nonrefundable deposit... I STILL HAVE NO RECEIPT, STILLNO PROOF that the deposit was indeed nonrefundable and advertised as such. SHADY BUSINESS!

This review of MasterTech plumbing is both for a specific job and for the dozen times I have used them over the past ten years. I live in a 60-year-old house that is in great shape except for plumbing issues. On this occasion, a drum trap in the basement ceilingwas clogged, causing the upstairs tub to back up. I had been warned by previous plumbers that this would likely cause me issues. I called MasterTech and got a plumber to come out. He explained all my options, from simply cutting out the drum trap to running new pipe from the tub to the stack (since it's rusting in spots). I chose the cheapest option so that they wouldn't have to tear out much of my basement ceiling, Like usual, there was no pressure to choose any other option. While he was here, I also had him take out a leaky saddle valve (which runs cold water to the refrigerator) and replace it with a high-quality valve. Work was performed that same day. I came home from work and everything was done. I have used MasterTech repeatedly over the past ten years. At times it was for simple jobs, like snaking the roots that grow into the clay pipes in my backyard. However, I have also had them replace an entire run of pipe after the pipes froze and burst one winter, run new pipes to a downstairs bathroom due to leaks, work on disconnecting a water softener, replace a shutoff valve behind a toilet after I ruined it by trying to fix it myself, and add a cleanout to the main stack for easier access. They have ALWAYS been friendly, professional, and prompt. I appreciate that they are willing to explain my options and even answer my questions since I'm usually curious about how it all works. I have tried other companies, but none of them matched the professionalism of MasterTech. I have had one or two problems (e.g., a plumber forgot to reconnect the upstairs bathroom water after working on the basement bathroom), but these were corrected quickly. Overall a quality company.

We are remodeling our kitchen and when a delay for installing the base cabinets that cascaded into the delay of the countertops - we needed a temporary sink, fast. These guys were prompt and onsite to provide a quote when promised. The work was excellent and completed in 3 hours. The downside is the cost; apparently there is high overhead for trucking around all those plumbing parts. I needed a quick turn-around so I took the hit on cost. I would use this company again only after I have shopped to compare prices.

The plumber was very responsive, on time and personable. However, before doing what I called him for, to simply to replace the flapper since the chain had broken, he first gave me the option of changing the entire mechanism at a cost well over $200. I didn't think this was necessary so told him to just fix the flapper. He did so which took less than 5 minutes and then presented me with a bill of $139.62. I didn't say anything but thought this was excessive, to say the least.

We do like to give customers choice. Our plumber gave (Member name removed) several choices. He firmly requested that we only change the one rubber part; It wasn't that much more to replace all the wear items while we were there. We know from experience that in the long run, quick fixes like these are ultimately more expensive and is a kin to putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. I'm grateful that we were able to satisfy (Member name removed) with responsive, personable and timely service. However, I wish we would have made (Member name removed) completely happy. It's expensive to provide professional labor, Insurance, warranties, inventory and all the overhead that goes into a business. I asked my mother if the owner had called her back yet (this was about 6 hours later.) She said he had not, but my mother is not in good health was still shaking and very upset about it, so I called Master Tech and asked them to please have the manager/owner call her back ASAP. The owner, Jerry, called her back within 5 minutes. I answered the phone and began to tell him the events of the last few days. When I told him that it all started with a flusher that wouldn't flush and that the plumber did not lift her lid yet to fix the reported problem, but he immediately shook her toilet FIRST, Jerry stopped me and said, "were you there, and did YOU see him shake her toilet." I told him that I was not there, but my mother was right beside me and told him to talk to her because she WAS there, and she could give him the details." She didn't get very far into her conversation, and she was not even allowed to finish telling him what happened before I heard her say, "I have never been treated so badly by any business in my life." She was teary and shaking, so I asked her to give me the phone (...she's had 2 heart attacks and I was afraid she was going to have another one!) I asked Jerry what was going on. He said that his plumber didn't shake her toilet, which point I explained to him that my mother was not lying and that I could give him a list of folks who were at my mom's house on a routine basis to vouch for the fact that she was not lying and that her toilet was never loose before, but Jerry said she was not telling the truth, and that he didn't like her as a customer and would give her her her money back if she would just go away. I told him that was great, but what was he going to do about the water all over her floor now, and he told me to tell her to "call somebody else" and hung up. When my husband came home, he called WALLACE PLUMBING to fix the problem. They sent out a real, certified plumber, and said he could not believe what he saw. They fixed her ENTIRE toilet, even the broken part that Master Tech told her would cost an additional $250.00 (total cost $418), but Wallace Plumbing repaired everything for $137.00. Now her flusher works, and her toilet doesn't leak! When I shared my story with all of my co-workers I was told that Jerry (the owner of Master Tech) has had to change the name of his business several times because he runs a racket. For the record, WALLACE PLUMBING has been in business for over 30 years, and has never had to change their name for a reason. DO NOT LET MASTER TECH PLUMBING IN YOUR HOUSE. It was a like watching a Dateline episode only my own mother was the victim in this case. Our next phone call is going to the better business bureau. These people are crooks....make that rude, mean crooks. Master Tech did give my mother her check back....it had not even been cashed yet.
Description of Work: My elderly mother called because the flush handle on her toilet wouldn't work anymore (she had to lift the tank lid and pull to flush the toilet.) She called Master Tech Plumbing. A so-called "plumber" came the next day. She told him what the issue was, and before he even lifted her tank lid, he told her that her toilet was "loose and crooked", at which point he aggressively shook / rocked her toilet back and forth to show her. She explained to him that her toilet was not loose, and that she only wanted her flusher handle fixed. He installed a new one, which took him 10-15 mins. and charged her $168.00 and left. When she used the bathroom the water ran all over her bathroom floor (because NOW the toilet was loose because he shook it loose) and flusher handle got stuck. She immediately called Master Tech back to explain what happened. The same "plumber" came back 2 days later. When my mother explained to him what happened he told her it would be another $250 to fix. She explained to him that she could not afford that and that her toilet did not leak until he shook it loose. She also told him that the flusher handle he installed "sticks" and does not return to it's original position when she flushed the toilet. He replaced the one he had installed 2 days earlier. As far as the water all over her floor was concerned, he told her that he could put silicone around it and proceeded to put the silicone around the toilet in the standing water! She asked him if that would work and suggested that he at least sop up the water first, but he told her it "would be fine." She then asked him if he was going to just leave her toilet in this shape, and he said "there's nothing more I can do" and left! My mom immediately called Master Tech again and asked to speak with the owner or manager. She was told he would call her within 24 hours. Needless to say, by the time I got home my elderly mother was very upset and shaking.

Response from MasterTech Inc
Of course we wish we could satisfy every customer. We did offer her elderly mother several options from replacing the toilet with a handicap toilet to just making minimal repairs. We did offer her options for repairing the leaking toilet. In the end, we made two trips and refunded her money promptly when she was not satisfied. The plumber that serviced (Member name removed) mother is well known to be very respectful. It would be way out of character for him to treat anyone with disrespect. I listened to the recorded call between Jerry and (Member name removed). Jerry treated her with utmost respect in both word and tone. Russ Owner MasterTech

The service tech was prompt, professional and courteous. I understand that MasterTech has somewhat of a reputation for overselling services, and my technician did have a long list of questions he was supposed to ask me, but he could tell that I was more knowledgeable that most, and just skipped that part! I was apprehensive about using them after reading other reviews, but my experience was quite positive.

Thanks for the positive review. We don't always get it right but we always make it right. Sometimes we can't control everything that happens in the field but we can control how we respond to any mistake we make and we are determined to correct mistakes on our part. If anyone ever has a problem with MasterTech, they can call and discuss it with us and we will correct any error. Technicians are trained to give each customer choices, answer questions about the features and benefits of each service and then to let the customer decide which service is correct for them. Again Patrick, thanks for taking the time to leave a positive review. Russ
