John Mangan from Handyman Connection came to do the work on Monday, November 1, 2010. We soon discovered (when trying to use just the fan) that the fan and light both were wired to the wall switch; which meant you had to have the wall switch on, which turns the light on also, in order to operate the fan. I have three other fan/light kits in my home. The wall switch always works the light only, and the fan works independent of the wall switch by pulling the chain. This way you can use the fan without turning the light on. I called Handyman Connection Monday, November 15, to report the problem. They told me to call John Mangan, the man who had done the work. I called John and he told me that the fan/light unit was wired properly and if I wanted him to look at it I would need to pay him another $92.00. (I had already paid $120.00) when he was there the first time. I told him I would not pay another $92.00, as he had wired it incorrectly the first time. Later on Monday, November 15, I stopped by Ace Hardware on Manchester, in Des Peres; and asked if I was correct in the way a fan/light unit should be wired. They said yes and gave me the phone # of a man who could fix the problem for me. The man came out on Friday, November 19, wired the fan/light correctly and charged me $40.00. I will not be using Handyman Connection again.
Description of Work: They were to switch a ceiling light in one bedroom with a fan light kit in another bedroom.

Response from Handyman Connection of Chesterfield
I have left 2 messages for this customer in an effort to explain that what has happened here is not due to an error on the part of our Craftsman. The standard installation for a ceiling fan / light combination is for the power to run through the switch to the fixture. The light or the fan can then be operated at the fixture with pull chains. The customer was not aware that her her existing fan / light was wired in a non standard manner. It is not a problem to wire it this way, but the Craftsman was not asked to wire it this way and had no reason to suspect it was wired in a non standard manner. Having the wiring changed is not a warranty issue and would require a service charge. However, it appears this customer has elected to have an unqualified, unbonded and uninsured handyman do the job for $40 and give one of my best Craftsman and my company an F.

The handyman was to arrive mid-afternoon Friday but he called to say he would be late. I offered to wait until Monday but he said he would be willing to work until my job was done. I was eager to have my kitchen faucet replaced, so this was good news. He arrived and gave me the price, which I agreed to, and he went to work. I am very happy with the work, and the handyman was very pleasant.

I was pleased with the caulking job around the outside of the shower. Smooth finish and all tile was clean around the area when he finished. He put a sealer on the small area inside the shower as I had requested, but he told me that there was a bit of mold and that I needed to get all the sealer removed, clean out the mold with bleach, let it dry and then reseal. I was glad that he took the steps he did and told me what needed to be done. I was very glad he didn't remove the sealer, clean it out and then leave. That would have put my shower out of commission when I wasn't expecting it and it would have required a return trip (and expense.) The work in the garage consisted of assembling a floor standing storage cabinet and mounting a sports ball holder, drilling holes in two handles and putting up screws in the wall to hold the equipment. I also asked him to show me how to use my power drill and he did. I don't know the going rate for a handyman so I may be judging this unfairly. I was told on the phone when I made the appointment that there was a special going on now of $219 for the first four hours and then I would have to talk to the handyman about the amount he would charge for additional hours after that. I felt the $55 an hour "special rate" was slightly high to begin with but I could live with it. When I saw that all the things on my "to do" list couldn't be completed in four hours, I asked for one additional hour to get the most important things accomplished. He said the rate was $68 an hour. To me, that is an outrageous hourly rate. So in the end, overall I was very pleased with the professional workmanship. I have used handymen before and some are not careful to protect your home and some do not clean up after themselves. I was very pleased that this was not the case with this gentleman. I am less pleased with the slowness of task accomplishment, because I have seen these types of projects done before and they didn't take as long as this experience. Now I still have projects that remain on my to do list but because of pricing and timing, I will have to find another way to get them done. I know I will look around for a handyman who charges much less than $68 per hour. I would use this company again if I could get better pricing.
Description of Work: He removed a chandelier and replaced it with a ceiling fan. Hung a mirror. Removed towel bars and toilet paper holders in two bathrooms. Assembled a storage cabinet. Mounted a sports balls holder in garage. Put holes in various handles and hung them on garage wall. Caulked shower. Adjusted deadbolt on door. Identified plumbing problem and made initial attempt at repair. I was very pleased with the pleasantness and professionalism of the gentleman He was a certified craftsman and seemed to know about the areas I was concerned with. He initially discussed pricing at my request and then itemized and I prioritized the projects so we both were on the same page. I was very impressed with the care he took to protect my home while he worked. Cloths were put down to protect my wood flooring while he hung the ceiling fan. Toweling was put down on my granite counter top where he laid his tool box and other assembly items. He had brought paper toweling and cleaned up caulking debris and every other area. He disposed of the packaging and boxes in a careful manner. First he removed the chandelier and replaced it with a ceiling fan. He was knowledgeable enough to tell me I didn't need the additional box and brace I had bought. But when finished I had to ask him to fix it so it did not wobble and he did make the necessary adjustments. (I didn't like that I had to ask about this!) I also felt the project took too long to accomplish. Next he hung a mirror. Then he removed existing and put up new towel and toilet paper holders in two bathrooms and hung a tieback holder. This seemed to take a long time. He made adjustments to my back door so that the door hung better so I could more easily engage the deadbolt. He identified the strange plumbing noise (which I thought was coming from the basement) and attributed it to one toilet leak. He cleaned around the rubber seating of the flush valve in the tank and reseated it. He said that may or may not fix it. I'd have to see if that stopped the leak. He offered to investigate and get a replacement flush valve for a return visit if this did not solve the problem. I was impressed that he took the simplest approach to fixing it first, instead of just saying it needed a new valve.

Woodie came out to give an estimate. He scheduled a time to do the actual work. When he came back out he brought his son along. His son replaced the bathroom faucet with a new one that I had purchased. Woodie brought along several parts to work on the fence gate (back brace, turnbuckle, small pipe for securing the latch, etc.). Both Woodie and his son did a good job.

Response from Handyman Connection of Chesterfield
This is rental property and we probably have a communication problem here. The only complaint we received was that the gutters were overflowing after we had cleaned them out and attached a plastic downspout pipe. Our Craftsmen responded to the complaint and discovered that the gutter is sloped incorrectly. We referred this customer to a gutter company to have the gutters adjusted for proper slope. No complaints had been received about the drywall work or the door work. Our Craftsman had been working under the direction of the tenant.

Called a roofer for an estimate but he said since it wasn't technically the roof I need a carpenter. I called for an estimate and they came by a few days later. I was afraid of a huge bill because of the age of our house and the spot was in an inconvenient place. I was really happy with the estimate and they even knocked off $100 for a coupon without asking. I hired them and they did the work about two weeks later. They arrived early on a holiday weekend and were really professional and nice. They fixed the hole in about two hours and explain everything they did and showed us the cost of the material. They even looked at a different part of our roof where they thought they noticed another hole but it turned out to just be chipped paint and didn't need to be repaired. I was really pleased by their honesty and how they treated me with respect.
Description of Work: I have a two story century home. The under side of our roof or soffit had some water damage and a chunk about 4ft x 2ft fell off leaving a hole under the overhang about 35ft high with bamboo and trees blocking easy access. They removed some old spray insulation the previous owner used to "fix" a leak as well as a huge squirrel nest. They made sure the leak wasn't from the gutter but a missing shingle and replace that then patched the hole, matched the molding the best they could and painted the new wood.

rst time they were coming to give an estimate they cancelled because the man was running late on his job so I rescheduled. I rescheduled for earlier in the day so I could avoid them running past 6 (which is the last possible time they will come out). So I set it for 1-3 and they called to see if it was ok to be late like around 4. I told them if it was right around 4 then sure because the appointment had been rescheduled once already. The main office calls me at 4:30 again asking to reschedule. 10/06/2010. Everything went very well after they followed up after our initial meeting.

Description of Work: They replaced a rotten header above my garage door, and had to replace all the wood down to the truss. It took a lot more time and some creativity on their parts to figure out how to fix it to be water proof in the future, because the initial construction was not ideal. Response from Handyman Connection of Chesterfield
I just want to tell you our side of the story regarding a report submitted by the member on April 10. She obviously was very upset. We had a problem with her on an earlier project. She became very demanding and derogatory to our Craftsman who was doing some interior painting for her. The Craftsman, who is a great guy and with excellent skills, asked to be removed from the job and we asked for and received a partial payment. We then assigned another painter who went out and gave her pricing to complete the work but she decided to go with someone else. She called again to have us install a light fixture for her. We sent a Craftsmen out to give her an estimate, which she accepted. When he arrived later to do the work, the member said she had just fired her assistant and told John the work had already been completed. He noticed that the original fixtures were still in place, so she clearly was lying to him. We then flagged her in our database to DO NOT SCHEDULE. She then called again on Tuesday, April 6, and before our Customer Service Representative noticed it was the member, who was flagged, the member engaged her in conversation and was very nice and conversational. Our CSR went ahead and gave her an appointment. Two days later, our Craftsperson Tina, who had an appointment time frame of 11A to 1P, was unable to get hold of her until 1:30P. Tina then met with her and spent and hour and a half putting together a detailed proposal and material list. The member wanted the work done immediately, but Tina told her they didn't have enough time left in the day to get materials and complete the work. While on the phone with the office, Tina explained that she had an appointment for an estimate with another customer in the morning at 9A, but could pick up materials and get over to her house after that. The next day, Tina called at 10A and said they were going to Lowes to pick up the materials. After working through a problem with the order, they arrived at the member's around 12P and were met with a totally irate member who was emotional, abusive and demanding that they finish the job that day or she wasn't going to pay. Tina delivered the materials and declined the job after that. The member called the office, was out of her mind with emotion, threaten to report us to the BBB and Angie's List and then hung up. Other than spending a lot of time discussing the work and picking up the materials, no work had been actually started and no money was received by Handyman Connection.

The two guys were very friendly, on time, got right to work, explained what they were doing and cleaned up after themselves the best they could (difficult with sanding drywall). The came back three days in a row to work on the ceiling and it looks great. Very dependable and did not waste time but did, patiently, explain all they were doing. I would use them again as I was very satisfied.

We were very pleased with the professionalism of this company. Although their services are a bit pricey ($90 for an initial visit) the quality of the workmanship was worth the cost. When the representative first examined the problem, he thought the water damage may have been caused by poor caulking. He suggested that we try fixing the caulking first, rather than immediately cut into the ceiling. Unfortunately the fix didn't work - although it was an honest attempt to save us time, trouble, and money. When he returned to isolate and fix the leakage, we were credited the initial visitation fee, and only charged for the time he spent actually on the job (even though extra time was spent waiting for things to dry). He kept the ceiling damage to a minimum, and patched the damage like a pro. It was definitely worth the money we paid for the fix. Using the Angie's List coupon was a nice bonus too.
