I answered this question above. They did an excellent job. In fact, I'm going to call them today because we have a totally different problem that we'd like finally corrected and we know they can do it.
Description of Work: Our sewer has been backing up for years. We have two huge maple trees in front yard which we knew was a problem with roots getting into the pipes. Anyway, I told my husband let's call McQuillan's and get this straightened out. They gave us the amount it would cost first, and then snaked out our pipes that went out to the front yard to the boulevard. It was really cool because they brought a machine that had a computer screen on it and we could see where the pipes were clogged and see the snake catch all the roots. Took about 2-3 hours. It was pricey, we wanted it done right.

Excellent professional service with a thorough knowledge of the issues found in a 100+ year old home. Trustworthy and competent.
Description of Work: Reuben installed a new kitchen faucet, significantly increase water pressure coming from multiple faucets, and snaked several drains. I have tried several different plumbers in the past for the same issues without satisfaction. For the first time in 7 years, I can shower and get the shampoo out of my hair! Thanks Reuben and MacQuillan Bros.

I bought a big deal for this service and it went very well. I was pleased and have had them before. He did well and solved the problem. I was pleased. They were here on time for the checkup and the service was fine.

We have had them for years. They are reliable and good. If you have problems in the next few weeks, they come back. Usually, there is no service charge. They will come back and recheck it. His price is just like anybody else in the area. They have specials to come out and check your central air, boiler and furnace. They send coupons and I use them. They are on my speed dial for when I have problems. They are reliable and I would rather have somebody tell me the truth, than to lie and put in parts that I didn't need.
Description of Work: The toilet was blocked and he fixed it. A week before that Mr. McQuillan came out and bled my pipes because we weren't getting heat in our family room.

The service was fine. It turned out good. He stayed here until the work was done. We were expecting the cost to be three grand so $860 was great. Another plumber had told us that we had broken pipe in our front yard and so we were thinking it would be at least $3,000. So, we were thrilled. We would use them again.

Finally he admitted that he didn't have the equipment to do the job (snaking out my basement floor drain, which is what I requested when setting up appointment). Said the equipment was being repaired. Said he called another guy they work with "who is really good at calling back, I left your number and mine". Still haven't heard from him! I was frustrated because I took afternoon off work to be home, I was clear what I needed done, and they still sent out someone who was not able to complete the job. He said I had to pay $99 for the service call but they would put that on my account to be used for future work! I don't anticipate calling this company again.... I called another plumbing company from Angie's List who came out the next day (requiring more time taken off work) but he completed the job in less than 2 hours and it was a positive experience. I completed an on-line survey for McQuillan and was very blunt about my experience and disappointment that no one cancelled this call if the equipment was broken. I requested a refund because nothing was done! I was contacted by someone from the company who apologized and submitted my bill to their accounting department. 2 weeks later, I have been told a check for $99 is being sent (not received yet).
Description of Work: Walked around my basement pointing out areas that might benefit from upgrades (1940 house). Spent 30-45 minutes doing this, was friendly and played with my dog.

Hi [member name removed] Since your original review on our ReviewBuzz site we have been working hard to ensure nothing like this happens again. There is no excuse for us sending a technician who could not complete the work. There was a communication error between the representatives and technicians and because of that you did not receive the service you deserved. As mentioned to you, you have been refunded and should receive the check no later than early next week. If there is anything else we can do for you please don't hesitate to call the shop at 651-292-0124 or send us an email.

I was very happy that Tim could come late on a Friday night after our water heater made a thudding noise, broke down, and leaked water into the boiler surround. I had used McQuillans for a major job in the past to my great satisfaction, but this time the price for about two hours of work seemed outrageous and I will never call them again. Tim also gave me a bid (over 15,000$) for a new high efficiency wall mounted boiler/water heater. I got three other bids and went for somewhat lesser efficiency at roughly half the price.
Description of Work: Disconnected Amthron water heater due to emergency break-down. Partly emptied boiler overflow tank.

They were prompt and courteous. Both of the guys who have come up here have been really good at explaining things of taking time to explain things to us. We were new to this kind of house and heating system. They did it patiently with us. We ended into a service contact with them back in the fall. So, we are paying a monthly service fee for $40 a month for them to come out several times a year and this last was a part of that contract.

It went great! McQuillan's had previously removed our old oil-burning boiler and installed a new high-efficiency boiler. Their work was impeccable and they left our basement cleaner than when they arrived, (and much more spacious due to the small size of the new boiler)! The new Buderus has been totally bullet-proof. We use it to heat the house and also to provide hot water. It has been extraordinarily efficient and we expect it will pay for itself in only two winters! It's been the best money we've spent on our old house! Thanks Tim and Crew!
Description of Work: Tim found and repaired two leaks in our old radiator system. He also offered to inspect our boiler at no cost and found no problems.

As we later learned, Mcquillan improperly installed the pipes, which led to significant problems with the boiler's functioning. Until we got the boiler fixed and the piper re-routed, we had intermittant heat and hot water during the coldest months of the year and in-floor kitchen heating that did not work at all. In the midst of trying to figure out what was wrong, the GC finally told me that Mcquillan had done the work. I called Mcquillan immediately and left a message. The message I received back from Mcquillan was incredibly rude, unhelpful, and (frankly) hostile. At one point, the person said "do you have heat or not?" My subsequent attempts to reach someone at Mcquillan were met with silence. We spent over $10,000 to fix the problem. I cannot stress enough how displeased we are. The work was originally done in 2009 and my last attempts at communication with Mcquillan were in December 2011.
Description of Work: Mcquillan was chosen by our GC to perform extensive plumbing work as a part of our home remodel. Among other things, Mcquillan installed a Buderus boiler.

The gas dryer went okay. My complaint is that the installer "needed a part" and had to return to the shop. The trip took an hour and I was charged for all of it. This is okay even but it added a third to the estimated cost. The humidifier also required a trip to the shop for a part which took an hour and added a third to the estimate. The humidifier worked somewhat for a year maybe but then the water lines started leaking and there was no water being delivered to the unit. This was several years ago so they may have improved, but Angie asked for a review so here it is.

They came out on Dec. 30th with a camera to look at a pipe. He couldn't get down the pipe to see anything. Midway Sewer came out and put a snake down and left it. On Dec. 31st the plumber said that there was a broken pipe under my front porch and he came to that conclusion because he could see rocks in the line but he couldn't actually see the crack. Then he told me that I would need to hire an excavator to come out and see what they could do. He gave me a tape of what he saw on the camera and I was to give that to the excavator. The excavator was supposed to come on Jan. 1st and he did not show up. He came on the Jan. 3rd or 4th. He took a look at the situation and said he would talk to McQuillan and let me know. On Jan. 7th I called McQuillan because I hadn't heard anything and they came out that day. They said the excavator couldn't do anything because they were scared my porch would collapse if they dug under it. They decided they may be able to fix it from the inside. I had a hole in the basement because years ago when we had a water meter that is where it had been hooked up. He made a bigger hole and dug it out and cut a pipe. There was nothing wrong with the pipe he removed. He replaced the pipe and said that they would have to come back out again and try to clear it out and look again with the camera. They came back out the next day, and they brought out a machine called a jetter and they brought another man from their company. They confirmed that it was the pipe under the porch that was cracked. They left me with the hole in the floor and I told them I didn't want it open because animals could come in. They covered it up and told me they would let me know what they could do. On Jan. 12th I had not heard back from them but had received a bill for $2845.54. I was no further ahead and had a bigger hole in my basement so I was very upset. I told them to either fix it or tell me that they couldn't fix it. Two days later they let me know that they would subcontract someone to do the job. They told me the cost would now be $3800.00 more than the original bill. The subcontractor could not come until Jan. 19th, so I waited. I had them sign a lien waiver. On Jan. 19th, I got called for jury duty so I could not be there for the work. When I got home, my porch was still standing and the work was done! I was upset because I felt like they were giving me a run around. I understand why Midway Sewer recommended them but I am not happy with the service I received. I felt like I was getting ripped off. At that point, I did not feel that I had a choice because I had to get it done and that was a long time to go with out regular working plumbing. The first guy who came out said he thought it was under the foundation and yet they sent out several other people to confirm this. It cost me a lot of money and time without plumbing for them to continually confirm this with several other individuals. I would not use them in the future.

The wonderful thing about them is they understand steam heat or radiator which is more like a specialty. I like that they show up and get the job done. I like that I can call the owner Tim if I have a question and they come out and talk to me. The people that work for them are generally older and they all know what they are doing. The owner is a relative of a neighbor, so it has a neighborhood connection. I like them.

First off, the plumber didn't show as scheduled. The contractor had to call them to have someone arrive 2 hours late. So the project completion was delayed. Then, it turns out there was no plumber available, so McQuillan sent some guy on call. That guy spent another hour walking around outside, yakking on his cell phone. He then told me it was quitting time, and he couldn't finish the job (which he hadn't started) that day. The contractor intervened and told the guy to make sure I had water for the night. The guy left, mumbling something about needing a part, and returned an hour later (6 pm!!) with a piece of hose identical to one I had in my basement, to run a connection from the new main to the basement sink. At 9 the next morning, a different guy showed up to do the work. He spent 4 hours running a 15-ft length of copper pipe. He left a mess, including chewing tobacco spit. In March, the contractor called me to say they got a bill from McQuillan for an additional $1700 of work! That they claim I agreed to. Both the contractor and my regular plumber reviewed the work and both agreed that nothing more than what St Paul code requires was done. Never mind that McQuillan did NOT have any estimate or bill for this mystery work. My plumber & the contractor said the contracted job should not have taken longer than 2 hours. Just what was that guy doing in my basement? McQuillan laid him off this past January, and now claim they "cannot reach" him to verify what he did! They now are sending me bills "past due" for work that was made up. The contractor already paid McQuillan for the job.
Description of Work: McQuillan was the sub on a lead water service replacement project. All they had to do was show up as scheduled with the contractor and install the inside 3/4" piping from the 1" new main connection, according to St Paul code. My project was a little quirky -- at 126 yrs old my house was built before city water/sewer connections -- but that was clear before work ever began.

Three years dealing, or should I say fighting, with another plumbing company on an installation they did for me before I was a member of Angie's list, lead me to make a change. The owner of the first company that I used seemed competent but not the crew so I decided to abandon them and find a new company. After a search of the boiler manufacturer's website and a check in Angie's list I chose MCQUILLAN BROTHERS PLUMBING & HEATING. They came out to look the next day, explained what was the problem was, and returned quickly with parts to fix the problems in the initial installation.

This work was done in April 2008. The plumber made sure I was on hand to watch as the camera was run down the main line and I was able to watch on a monitor to see what the plumber sees. There was a break in the pipe joint outside the foundation, minor breaks throughout the entire line and then a major break at the city main. He explained everything we were looking on a TV monitor. He confirmed what I had been previously told by another plumber who opened the main but didn't have a camera. He recommended an entire new sanitary sewer from the inside cleanout to the connection at the city main in the street. This company doesn't do that kind of work, but, it was good to know what we were dealing with. The odd part, later, we found out that they should have videotaped the entire sewer line from the house to the street and given us a copy of it, rather than just watching it on a TV monitor. After a few phone calls, they came back and filmed the main sewer line and gave us a copy of the tape to show other companies that would be involved in the bidding process for removing and replacing the entire sanitary sewer system.

Mike was very helpful and gave a thorough explanation of the boiler system, how it works and how to take care of it. We were told it would be $169.50 for the first hour and a lower hourly rate thereafter. It took approximately one hour, and Mike said he would not charge more than that for maintenance such as this. My only complaint is that they should have a standard rate for maintenance of this kind, rather than an hourly rate. It is harder to predict the cost and comes across as less customer-friendly. After all, we called them because they installed the system initially, and they should encourage customers to use them to inspect their own work.
Description of Work: They inspected and cleaned our boiler system, and instructed us on regular use and maintenance (since we just bought the house and have not had a boiler system before).
