It was a difficult job - My stack comes up through the very peak of my roof. They had to custom build the metal stack because of this & did an excellent job. They also replaced a piece of fascia board for me that they saw was rotting. They originally installed my roof in 2001 & that's why I went back to them for this job. They were very professional; they guys themselves who came out did the work were very nice as well as professional. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I'd had some leakage because of the tornado in June of 2011. They removed my chimney, put up a metal chimney stack in replacement, & patched up the roof around that area.

Removing the old gutter seemed to be a little more difficult than they anticipated, but they stayed late on both days they were here and got the job done. Both workers were friendly and professional. They answered all my questions. They did start the job later than the date I was originally told and no one from the office called to inform me of the delay.
Description of Work: Built in gutter on our front entry porch was replaced.

The roof part was great. I'd recommend them for a roof any time. This is the second time they've done a roof for us (they replaced the roof on our house about 10 years ago), and they did a fine job: fast, neat, no problems. The siding was another matter. They did a terrible job on the trim, they argued with me when I pointed out things that needed to be fixed, and several times they lied to me about what was and was not possible. It was terrible customer service, and very bad detail work. It there was a project manager (I never met him or saw him), he signed off on substandard work. And If there wasn't a project manager, well, there should have been. This was an expensive job--$11,000. They should have paid better attention and been more responsive. I don't think Walker Roofing is terribly experienced with Hardie Plank (there were many things they told us that turned out to not be true) and while the garage looks just fine from a distance, up close you can see many problems. None of the problems are structural; the garage will hold up just fine. They are, however, cosmetic. For instance: 1) The trim at the corners and around the windows is dented in many places, I presume from the nail gun. 2) Instead of finishing nails, which would be invisible, they used big galvanized nails (and told us those were required for the job). Those big nails are not required. (I looked up the Hardie Plank specifications on the Web.) They could have (and should have) used finishing nails, but did not--perhaps because finishing nails would take longer and require more work, since they need to be hand-nailed rather than nail-gunned. So we came home to dented trim with big silver nail heads every few feet, gleaming out from the white trim. 3) They would not paint over the nailheads unless we paid them more money. They also gave us a big song and dance about the inability to match the paint color---so convoluted and contradictory that I can't even reproduce the conversation here. So in the end we painted the nailheads ourselves. Terrible customer service. And the trim is still dented. 4) When they replaced the trim around the doors, they only replaced some of it--the trim that faces out. They did not replace the trim inside the doorway but just left the old rotten trim. When I complained, they argued and said they couldn't replace it without ripping off all of the work that they had already done. (Not true. And the next day they replaced it. But I really do not like first having to monitor them, then having to complain, and then having to argue.) 5) The trim the initially put up around the window was not what we had asked for---it was nearly 6-inches wide, all the way around, and since the window was very small, it looked ridiculous. When I complained (again), they argued (again) and said they couldn't do any more work until that situation was resolved. Then they packed up and went home. This was at 8 a.m., so we lost a day. 6) They came back the next day and replaced the trim, and while it looks better, it is still not what we had originally ordered. And before replacing it, they told me three different sizes of trim that they absolutely must use, for various air-tight reasons. None of these reasons was true, since in the end they went with something else. 7) There were other problems along those lines---detail work that was not done right, or not done according to what we had agreed upon. I *hated* having to complain, and I hated even more that when I did complain, they argued with me. Was there a project manager? Did someone come out and inspect the work? If so, he approved substandard work--the rotten old siding, the giant nailheads, the dented trim. I wrote a letter and put my complaints in writing, and I also spoke to someone at length over the phone who promised to talk to a manager and relay my concerns. In return, five days later I got a letter acknowledging my payment and including one half-sentence regretting the problems. That was it. So--bottom line: they do a fine job on roofs and probably do a fine job on vinyl, which I believe they are very experienced in. But the Hardie Plank? I would not recommend them. I would not recommend their attention to detail. I would not recommend their customer service. And I would definitely not recommend their project manager, who either didn't inspect our job, or signed off on a substandard (but very expensive) job.
Description of Work: They ripped off the old rotting siding from our garage, ripped off the old roof, and removed the old windows and lights. They then put on a new roof, installed Hardie Plank siding and new windows, and new trim and lights. A complete facelift for our garage.

The salesman said the only way he would guaranteed his work if he replaced the flashing and part of the siding. The visit was on July 7 2011, with a 3 week lead time for the work to be performed. After six weeks, I had to call him and then the company repeatedly to get the work performed. They came without warning; I only realized the work had been done when I happened to walk on my deck in late September and found nails and pieces of metal used for the flashing. I then had to call to complain that the flashing was showing through the original shingles (they hadn't placed new shingles to cover the metal). Some time later I received a phone call from the salesman stating that he and his manager had gone up to my house (yet again unannounced) and that the work had been performed to industry standards. That day I noticed the shingles had been replaced - when I don't know. Now the roof is leaking again and they advised me that the form I signed in haste the day of the visit explicitly reads that the work performed was not guaranteed. I also was told it would cost me an additional $200 for them to come back to my house to determine the next step. The salesman of course denies guarenteeing the work.
Description of Work: I contracted Walker Roofing to fix a roof leak at the corner of the second floor wall the abuts the portion of the roof above the first floor living room. It was advised on July 7, 2011 that we should replace the flashing (water conduit placed at any corner where an outside wall meets the roof of the floor below it), remove the corner post and associated siding and affected shingles, then install a new flashing, corner post, shingles and siding. The cost was $1500.

Since the required repairs could not be determined until the roof was taken apart, the job was bid a time and meterials. Worst case estimate was two days. A worst case esimate was also given. All of these were exceeded. The job took three days of, in my opinion, not working very hard. There were lots of breaks to go for materials that I thought should have been with them already.Cost excedd the maximim by about 1000. The finished job was what I wanted but the experience was not very good. I will never call these people again.

The reason that we give a time and material bid is that we can not forsee what we will find until after the roof is torn apart. The contract said time and materials not to exceed $3000.00. It also said if we would be close to exceeding this total we would let them know. The materials had to be purchased after we found what we needed to purchase. The job exceeded the maximum by $448.00.

They were recommended by a Realtor. They were competitive and beat everyone Else's price. They miscalculated and cut one piece of the roofing too small, but, came back and took care of that. I saw that one side wasn't perpendicular, but, I forgot about it, as it was only a visual thing. Until we have some bad weather, I can't really tell if they did a good job, but, for now, it's okay. They had a back log when they put it on for me.

They had worked with my insurance company in Nov. 2010 for a hail damage claim, but they lost all the paperwork over the winter. When they came again to look at the roof in April 2011, I gave them a copy of the insurance report. I never heard from them again. After 2 months, I gave up on them and called another roofer to do the job.

The project did not move forward due to winter and when we contact this client in the spring he asked that we not go forward on the project until the fall of 2011. We contacted him several times with no response. We never received a response or a call from him and found out he had the work completed by some one else when we went out to the neighborhood. We would have completed it earlier if we had known he wanted to proceed.

The process was not as smooth as I hoped and I felt the communication was poor. It took longer for Walker to do the work than they said. I think that it would have taken even longer if I had not called multiple people multiple times. The seemed disorganized. When someone finally came out to do the work he finished almost everything in a day and then said he would come back in a "few days" to finish the rest. When we told him this was unacceptable they came back the next day.

About a dozen shingles had fallen off of our roof, and others were loose. Walker Roofing was easy to work with over the phone, and scheduled a roofer to come out the next day. The next morning Pablo called to say he was running slightly late due to a vehicle issue (I appreciated the courtesy), even so, he arrived within a half hour of the scheduled time. Our house doesn't have great roof access, it's on a narrow old city lot, but Pablo got to work and had all the shingles replaced/refastened in under two hours. He also took the time to make a sketch illustrating why shingles keep working their way loose (deteriorated roof decking boards with gaps between them), confirming what others have told us but more clearly. A very good experience, I would recommend them to friends.

They came out promptly and did the job. Three men stayed here to do it. The supervisor came and left, and I don't know whether that's typical or not. They cleaned up the snow so that it would be out of the way and would not come into the house. They did a wonderful job at that. However, they did not do ice removal in my gutters which is what I wanted them to also do. They said they would come out to do that. I spoke to one of the men because I was not sure about what all they would do. I was comfortable with what they were doing. They said I should have had the work done sooner, but I got it done anyway. I thought their price was a little high, but I was told that it was probably because of the number of people and the time that it took to finish the work, and that it was a reasonable price.

There was water leaking through the roof, and the inspector, Chad, came out quickly and looked at the attic area. He demonstrated that there was light coming through the roof and showed me the defect. He made recommendations on what needed to be repaired. Chad was very responsive and I was please that he came out in a timely fashion. However, I was given an estimate that indicated that extensive repairs needed to be done. The job only ended up taking two or three hours with two guys, and the charge seemed excessive considering the work they did and the materials that were actually used. They charged me transportation to and from the store to pick up the materials, and I felt that they could have had someone else pick up the basic materials, such as caulk, rather than charging me $90 an hour to pick it up. The charges came to around two or three hundred dollars more than what the job ended up entailing. I did correspond with them but it didn’t seem that they were interested in making any adjustments or in making me feel satisfied with the amount I had spent. Due to the nature of the work, there were no warranties implied. The work seems to have turned out well, although I would have been happier with a fairer price.

I wanted them to come and re-do the stucco and they said they wouldn't be able to do that. There were issues with the flashing on the roof. They were supposed to fix them and they didn't. They would never return my calls. When the first crew came out, they didn't have the correct equipment. It took them a month to finally get back to me and tell me that they couldn't do the job. They gave me some money back so that I could hire someone else to do the job. The main frustration was with them not returning my phone calls. They should have just told me that they didn't do stucco work.

I found Walker Roofing in the phone book. I hired Walker Roofing because they advertised that they would do a membrane roof. I called up Walker Roofing, I talked to them, and they came and looked at everything. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the young man they sent. They've been terrific. They knew what they were doing. It turned out, there was some bad wood under the old roof. They hired union carpenters to come out and fix all that wood before they did the roof. It was terrific. The roofers I hired 10 or 15 years ago did not do that. Walker Roofing did the work they were supposed to and stayed within their estimate. I would hire them again.

They had great comments on Angie's List. I had several estimates and they were able to give me a good price. I liked that they were able to do all of these different jobs. It took them 3 months from the time I gave them the down payment to the time that they got the job done. I had to call the office many times to find out when they would get started. They would never commit to a time when they would start the job or call me to tell me when they would start. I am mostly satisfied with the results of the work. It just took them forever to get to the work.
