We got 5 estimates from different well know companies. Jack Pixley was the only company that told us it would be unsafe to use fireplace and that we needed to have it knocked down and rebuilt. The two men seemed as if they were trying to scare us when every other company told us our chimney was still safe and functional. Also, they gave us the highest estimate. After speaking with another neighbor down the street we found out they got the same story from the company. Another reason for not using this company was the time it took them to get back to is with estimate. It seemed excessively long. Needless to say we went with a different company.

Dear [Member Name Removed], I apologize, but our company information does not have your contact information under the address listed, so I will assume that you are either a friend of a realtor. We always appreciate an opportunity to review the standard of work we perform and the level of repair we feel strongly to recommend. In review, our technician, certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America, did a full evaluation of the chimney which includes running a closed circuit camera through and to the top of the customer'[Member Information Removed] flue liner. There are still pictures kept in our customer'[Member Information Removed] file showing flawed tiles and missing mortar joints throughout. There is no doubt that these types of flaws could lead to a POTENTIAL safety issue. Now that being said, since we have no control over the burning habits of the homeowner, we need to document that we do not recommend use of that fireplace. (The repair proposal was sent 23 hours later to the customer'[Member Information Removed] email address.) By no means would our technician use scare techniques as mentioned, as we train to communicate and deliver these type of findings when found. We report the facts and note our educated opinion on a report. Our repair proposals would include nothing less than a reline using a stainless steel liner system (UL listed) which includes insulation and proper clearances. Another option in most cases would be an insert that would run it'[Member Information Removed] own connector pipes through the chimney, whereas the old liner'[Member Information Removed] integrity is no longer an issue. Yes, this is an investment for a homeowner, but also peace of mind for them and for us when burning a fire in their home. If the homeowner would like to discuss our findings or our service, we are certainly open to discuss and clarify any information given. Education is one of our company'[Member Information Removed] main values, with our customers and with our employees. Sometimes that clears up a lot of misunderstandings and creates a customer for life. One of my favorite sayings by a very wise man is worth repeating . . . "Choosing a chimney sweep based soley on price is a very costly way to shop."
Absolutely incredible experience. Randy came out, was warm and professional, efficient with his and our time and made sure our chimney was in great working order before he left. It is amazing what a good working, wood burning fire place can do for the enjoyment and moral in the home. Because of the work and advice Randy gave we were able to enjoy our fireplace all winter long with no issues at all! Great service!!!!

We are very pleased with Jack Pixley Sweeps. We were given this referral by the former owners of our home and have continued inspection services with this company given how satisfied we've been. Based on our initial inspection a few years ago, we have someone from Jack PIxley out every two years to check on our wood burning fireplace and chimney. They are always punctual, professional, friendly and thorough. I also appreciate that no one ever seems to be trying to upsell us on anything. TIP: I usually call to make my appointment for February or March when they run their annual discount.

I have used Jack Pixley Sweeps for years. They are always very professional and friendly - and they were again this time. They bring their own dropcloth so nothing gets dirty - and nothing is disturbed. They are punctual - and easy to deal with. Appointments are easy to make. Prices are reasonable. The sweep that came out this time noticed that the stones in the stove were broken and replaced them (at additional cost) - but I appreciated being notified of the issue.

I was very impressed with my interaction with Jack Pixley Sweeps. The initial phone call to the office was very professional and the gal who answered my call was very informative. Dave came out to do the work. The exterior of my chimney is very deteriorated. He inspected the interior with a camera. He noted a couple of very minor cracks. He indicated that it would be safe to use, but I would want to have it inspected yearly to monitor the situation. Additionally, he installed a chimney cap.

The company representative stated that "at this time" they charge for home estimates. I'm at the Carver/Hennepin border and I cannot be certain if that played into their decision, but thought others might want to know when checking out this service provider. The rep was pleasant on the phone. Please note that this only reflects the inquiry for estimate, not work done.

Thank you [Member name removed] for the opportunity to sweep and inspect his fireplace this fall. We have two divisions to our company, one being the chimney sweep/inspection division and the other the repair division that relines fireplace flues and rebuilds chimney/firebox brickwork. There is a service call fee for repair estimates alone, if further out of the metro; however, if we are already doing other work, like sweeping and inspecting a fireplace, we provide a repair estimate for no extra charge. Our "No Charge" repair estimate appointments begin January through July for our service area; we complete our repairs on a "first come first serve" basis. Weather does dictate most masonry repairs. Thank you for allowing us to clarify the pricing offered.

He was meticulous and very thorough, explaining what looked good and what didn't to us. He informed us of our options and the consequences/outcomes of each option. We had not used our fireplace for 15 years and have some damage that we were unaware of. We were pleased with Dave's work and set up an appointment to repair the problems discovered during his inspection.
Description of Work: Dave cleaned out our fireplace, unstuck the damper and inspected the entire chimney. It was quite a mess since it had not been used for over 15 years. With the camera, he showed us and explained the status of the interior and the cap.

I chose Jack Pixley Chimney Sweep to perform the above listed services after price checking with several other recommended chimney sweep companies. The Jack Pixley Company was slightly more expensive than the other companies contacted, but I felt comfortable hiring them as I had in a previous year experienced good service from them. The chimney sweep,Steve, appeared very thorough and professional in his job performance. He was very patient, knowledgeable and informative in regards to answering several questions I asked concerning both my wood stove and other brick fireplace. He did some very minor adjustments at no extra cost. He also arrived at the time designated and completely cleaned his work area upon finishing this job. Based upon my experience with this company, I would recommend it for chimney servicing.

The old one was inoperable because you couldn't replace the chimney. The quality is beautiful. We have worked with them in the past when we had a wood-burning fireplace. They are very reliable and did a great job. They even stand behind all of their work and recommend we have a professional clean it once a year to prevent creating any issues. They're really in touch people and provide great service. They even call you when they're on their way.

Response from Jack Pixley Sweeps Inc
After reviewing the safety inspection report our CSIA certified technician gave Ms. [member name removed], we are hoping she takes the time to read it through again to see the evidence of our findings and to review the close circuit camera pictures she had received with the report given, explaining all the flaws in her two fireplace flue liners. Our company feels investing in such equipment detects issues that the eye could miss with shading or offsets and can prove invaluable. The brickwork on the chimney itself was actually crumbling and pieces were laying around the flashing area. The level of repair work we proposed was not only well needed for safety purpose when burning wood, but also will prolong the brickwork of her chimney. This response also gives us the opportunity to stress how important it is for a company to not only look at the obvious external needs of a chimney, but more importantly the internal liners of fireplaces, the area of greatest safety concerns. As the saying goes, "Choosing a chimney repair company based solely upon price may be a costly way to shop."

We feel that there was a slight communication problem with interpreting an educated recommendation to "insisting" on buying extra services. We should have done a better job of educating our customer during the phone conversation. We offered not only a repair estimate, but an inspection of the internal flue liners of the fireplaces, which is the area of biggest safety concern. Also, as a long standing company that offers quality chimney repairs, we mention that we do not believe in doing tuck pointing for deteriorated brickwork. Living in Minnesota, the longevity of work is at the mercy of freezing and thawing climate conditions. We want our brickwork to last, and not only believe strongly in replacing courses of brick, but remodeling the top wash with a crown that has a overhang and drip ledge to prolong the life of the brickwork as well. Our trained office representatives, if given the opportunity, will continue to communicate our level of service.

We were very pleased with the completed job. The company was able to work this project in as we were about to have reroofing done because of hail damage. We appreciated this. The mason and his crew were very personable, finished the work in a timely manner and did a great job of cleaning up. We would highly recommend them.

Homeowner beware. They told me my chimney was unsafe and needed to be destroyed. They said I had had a fire, but I did not. They did not do a good job. I paid $250 to have the chimney cleaned, but it was not cleaned properly. The owner was supposed to call me and he never did. Update: Yes, the company did call and refunded half of my money because the technician did not properly clean the Kodiak stove. Ash/creosote residue was left on top of the baffle and no attempt was made to clean the cap. Immediately following the technician's visit, I called a masonry/concrete company and had them inspect the chimney. Larry Everson of Osceola, WI has been in business for over 30 years and did not agree with the Pixley sweep. He explained that the staniless steel tube from the stove extends three-feet into the flue. This is the way Jack Pixley himself installed it. It did not come loose. Second, he told us that the Ahrens liner has a 1/8th inch of creoste, well within safety standards. However, he advised us to clean the chimney ourselves the morning after our first fire this season. He believes the warmth from the previous night's fire will allow for easy removal of the thin creosote covering. Additionally, since the Pixley technician did not even attempt to clean my chimney cap Mr. Everson suggested several products available from home improvement stores that, with a little elbow grease, remove soot and creosote. Photos were taken after the Pixely clean (?) and I will take photos after we have cleaned ourselves so Angie;s List members can draw their own conclusions. Further, I did contact my firewood provider and told him the technician's comments regarding his wood. He was furious as he sells only two-year old oak and has a sterling reputation. I should add that this unit is not for recreational purposes. It heats my entire two-story home and thus runs constantly in the winter. I showed Mr. Everson the Pixley technician's photo of the residue pile in the stove after his cleaning and he was impressed that it was so small and thought it was a testament to the efficiency of the Kodiak and the high-quality of my firewood.

The history behind our service with [member name removed]'s fireplace goes back 30 years when Jack Pixley installed a new flue liner after a chimney fire (the was last time our company serviced this fireplace). The homeowner has an old Kodiak Insert with a partial liner that should transition up through her flue liner. Also, old notes on the repair proposal years ago stated that we do not have control over their burning habits. Our CSIA certified technician with 20 years of experience inspected and cleaned this fireplace. He found a glazing problem on the liner (a type of creosote that is not removable with standard equipment, because it is like a hard candy like substance could be caused from improper burning habits, ex. wet wood, low little fires, bad draft). The Kodiak insert liner no longer transitions into the flue liner, as over the years has become dislodged; plus, in our technician’s educated opinion, sees evidence of a chimney fire because of puffed up creosote. Ideally, we recommend repair work to the customer to either install a new wood burning insert with its own liner running up the flue, or a repair where we must remove brick to access the old dislodged insert liner and set it in place; however this does not address the glazing problem. I have spoken with [member name removed] since and offered her a partial refund for our service. I also reviewed our technician's findings with further explanation on our recommendations, and have suggested that she have a 2nd opinion from another experienced CSIA technician, not a mason. Thank you for this opportunity to respond. Debra K. Catura, Co-Owner of Jack Pixley Sweeps, Inc.
