+ -1 moreI love the new living room colors (main shade and accent around fireplace) and I'm glad Molly suggested a lighter, brighter color than the original - it goes well with the furnishings, and sets the room apart from adjacent rooms. This summer I finally (!) got around to painting the kitchen using the new, lighter color she suggested and it's amazing how just that color has transformed the kitchen from a cold, dingy place to warm and inviting - it even makes the floor tile (which I previously couldn't stand) look neutral and as if it belongs. I'm impressed every day with how lovely the colors are! I hope to have Molly back sometime in the future to help choose the bedroom colors.
Description of Work: This is a follow-up to an earlier report. Molly helped me choose paint colors last fall for the dining room, kitchen/front entry/hallway and living room in my new (old) house. I painted the dining room first and was thoroughly delighted. The color chosen for the kitchen & front entry looked great in the hallway but seemed too dark for the kitchen. And I previewed the living room color by painting it on one wall of the downstairs family room (where it was perfect), but it seemed too dark for the living room. Molly was great about coming back to the house to re-evaluate our choices for LR and kitchen and came up with new paint colors for both.

I had an idea of what I wanted, and Molly help me decide which colors to emphasize to get the results that I wanted. The cost was only $150.00, and well worth it. She was thoroughly knowable about paint and color. Molly helped me select the kind of paint that I needed to cover what was already on my woodwork and walls. In the past, I have had trouble sticking with a decision when it came to remodeling, but she guided me to a confident decision and I bought the paint and I have started painting.
Description of Work: Molly came to help me select colors and types of paint for three rooms.

+ -1 moreI had 7 different laminate floor tile "samples" that I thought might possibly go with my kitchen countertops, backsplash and appliances. Molly spent a good deal of time with me, pointing out the different color variations in the tiles. Ultimately, we chose 1 of the tiles, which I think will look great. Based on the colors in that floor tile, as well as the countertops, backsplash and appliances, she then went through a number of paint colors, in order to find the perfect color for my kitchen. We then proceeded to the living room. Originally, I was thinking that a light cream color would look nice. However, when she put a light cream paint chip next to my dark woodwork, I didn't like the way it looked. She offered a number of other suggestions, as well as specific reasons for her suggestions. We decided on a slightly darker paint color that will bring out the rich color of the woodwork, but will blend in well with the bedrooms, bathroom and dining room colors.
Description of Work: Consultation for picking a laminate floor tile for my kitchen, as well as picking out paint colors for my kitchen and living room.

We had her back to do the 2nd floor and she selected colors that worked with the decorations in the rooms and also flowed from room to room. Most of her colors were right on the money the first time.

She communicates very well and has a wonderful intuitive sense of what you are searching so hard to express. I will never go anywhere else and we look forward to working with Molly on the next level of rooms.
Description of Work: Molly helped my husband and I select colors for the first level of our house (kitchen, dining room, living room, entry/foyer and halls). We have a lot of "angles" in house which made selecting a smooth transition of colors difficult for us to get a handle on.

+ -1 moreWe bought our house a couple of years ago, and the the existing color scheme did not compliment the house's feature or suit our tastes at all. My wife and I think about and describe color quite differently, but we generally like a lot of the same color schemes when we see them in other homes. It was well worth consulting with Molly to help us find the common ground that we were having trouble identifying on our own. We have painted several of the rooms with the colors Molly helped us select and the transformation in them is remarkable. Molly was extremely easy to work with, making specific suggestions based upon her eye and experience and yet staying attuned to the feedback we gave during the process. I highly recommend her for people having similar needs.

+ -1 moreWe chose Molly McKinney Palettes due to the wonderful reviews. I contacted Molly McKinney and spoke with her on the phone regarding the rooms in the house that needed to be painted. Previously, the walls in the living and dining room were off-white, adding no charm to the focal point of the house. In our initial phone call, Ms. McKinney described her process, her prices ($75/hour), and provided a rough estimate of the time it would take to help us select colors. The process began by Ms. McKinney suggesting color options for the main room, since we had no colors in mind. She helped us select colors for 3 rooms in the hallway, which complemented colors in the adjoining rooms and the furnishings. Since we have painted the rooms, we have received many complements from friends and family. We are very happy with the changes and wish we had started this process many years ago.
Description of Work: We were looking for a color consultant to help us choose paint colors for 3 rooms on the main floor, plus a hallway. The colors needed to blend in with the existing furniture and decorations.

+ -1 moreMolly listened carefully to my thoughts, working not only with the colors in the rug but also with the tones of our wood floors and furniture (I wanted to be sure that the shades chosen brought out the warmth of the wood). Our interior had been all white, and I was craving color. I had general ideas for all areas but the kitchen. As we processed through possibilities, she came up with an unusual blue/green/teal/gray color that I would never have thought of but that sets off and balances the golden woods of the cabinets and floors, and looks different in varying lights. I absolutely love it. Molly was here for over two hours, and this was definitely $$ well spent.
Description of Work: Molly helped me choose colors for my living room, dining room, kitchen, vaulted ceiling and hallway/stairs/landing working from the colors in our rugs and my preferences.

+ -1 moreAll the rooms in my new house have white walls (or, in the case of the kitchen, very pale blue walls), while I prefer warmer shades. Molly brought lots of paint colors, especially for my preferred brand of paint (which I told her about when we talked on the phone). The color she suggested for the dining room is not one I would have come up with on my own, but I just finished painting and it's beautiful. I'm looking forward to applying the colors she suggested in the living room and kitchen. The price I paid (which was actually less than I thought it would be) was a great value for me since in the past, when I picked colors on my own, I wound up having to buy more paint and redo all my work because I didn't get the color right the first time.

+ -1 moreMolly is great to work with! She arrived promptly on both occasions and immediately took in our furnishings and got a feel for our style. I shared some of my ideas and she helped direct me to more specific colors. For example, I knew that I wanted a certain area to be green and she helped narrow down to a specific green that would go with our furnishings and style. Then I painted sample boards and on her next visit we looked at it more closely. She has an amazing eye for color shades and actually took the sample paint can to the store to slightly tweak the color to the perfect shade. We are still in progress because it is a big house but she is very flexible giving as much help or as little as you would like. She also consulted with me on other decor such as which direction to go with the bedding, carpet color and countertops. I would highly recommend Molly to anyone. She can help you narrow down the overwhelming world of color!
Description of Work: Molly came to our house on two different occasions for two hours each time to discuss a paint color plan for our whole house. I would say that we are about half way finished in our process. I tend to be very detailed and like to review all my options so the length of process is probably longer for me. She is very flexible though and will go as far as picking the colors or giving you options, whatever you are looking for.

+ -1 moreI called Molly on a Thursday or Friday, I believe, and she came over on a Monday and in two hours (she charges $75 an hour, money I consider well spent) we picked six or seven different colors for the entire house. If I had done it myself, the house probably would have looked very disjointed. She chose a variety of different colors that all share the same sort of currently "in" earth tones that really help tie the whole house together. I particularly had fun with all the color names we considered. It's like going to a museum and guessing what unexpected title an artist chose to call their work. For my house, we chose: Universal khaki, portabello, attitude gray, Cajun red, poised taupe, sable and then her help with the choices emboldened me to pick two colors for the back bedrooms -- Mexican sand and Nantucket dune -- that look smashing as well.
Description of Work: I searched for a designer/colorist to help me prepare my house for sale and chose Molly because of all the positive comments here on Angie's List. Her selections for paint color for the entire house were so beautiful, so cohesive I think I'm going to stay. Being that I was a bit unsure whether I was improving for the house for someone else or possibly myself, she brought all her color palettes and gave me a couple different options each as we went through the house room by room. She started by picking a color from my great room fireplace (since the brick isn't going anywhere) and we built from there. She chose two different colors for accent walls in an open downstairs, something I probably wouldn't have thought of and we settled on three colors total for the downstairs that she called a "sophisticated" color palette. It looks great! She even helped me solve what some might call a "pink" bathroom upstairs by painting the walls a deep chocolate, a great idea that lessens the pink.

I would describe the look I was going for, as well as my concerns (lack of southern light), and she would zero in on the colors that suited my preferences, my environment, and my existing floors and furniture. I couldn't be happier with the palette she left me with. And I am thrilled that if I test my colors and they don't quite work, she will come back and help me tweak them. I will ask her to come back and help me pick colors for my kitchen and family room when the time comes.

We would highly recommend her services in particular and, more generally, we recommend using a color consultant. Having the whole selection of large swatches (not the little paint chips) in your home, with your furniture and your lighting, is extremely helpful. We are very pleased with our results and we would recommend Molly for consultation. NOTE: Molly spent two hours with us ($75 per hour) and we picked out colors for our living room, dining room, kitchen, cabinets, hallway, and two bedrooms. Overall - well worth the money.

Then we went room to room, and she selected colors for us to react to for each space. She also tied together colors from one room to another. She recommended an accent color for the kitchen and for the exterior. We have painted two rooms so far and are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Molly provided color recommendations for 5 interior rooms (kitchen, dining, living, hall and sun room) and exterior. Selection was tricky because we have some ugly green-tinged blonded woodwork that we wanted to soften by selecting the right paints. She brought along color palettes from several different manufacturers. We wound up using the Benjamin Moore line because they had a good variety and decent size color card samples.

SHE ASKED WHAT WE HOPED FOR AND DESIRED AND THEN MADE SUGGESTIONS COORDINATING WITH THE COLORS OF THE BRICKS IN THE FIREPLACE, THE WOODWORK AND, IN ONE CASE, A PIECE OF ARTWORK. SHE WORKED A LONG TIME WITH MY 10-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER, WHO WAS UNSURE WHETHER SHE WANTED A GREEN OR ORANGE FOR HER ROOM. I WAS A BIT HORRIFIED BY ORANGE, BUT MOLLY SUGGESTED A SHADE I LIKED, AND THE ROOM TURNED OUT PERFECT. MOLLY FOLLOWED UP HER VISIT WITH AN EMAIL DETAILING ALL OF HER SUGGESTIONS AND PROMPTLY MAILED TO US A COUPLE OF PAINT CHIPS SHE DIDN'T HAVE WHEN SHE WAS AT THE HOUSE. I HAVE CONTACTED HER A COUPLE TIMES SINCE JUST TO CLARIFY SOMETHING, AND HER REPLIES HAVE BEEN VERY PROMPT. CONSIDERING WE HAVE SPENT MORE THAN $1,000 ON PAINT (WE HAVE PAINTED EVERY ROOM IN OUR LARGE HOME), THE MONEY WE SPENT ON MOLLY'S SERVICES WAS VERY WELL-SPENT. I WOULD HIRE HER AGAIN IN A MINUTE AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER.

I COULD HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON PAINT THAT I ENDED UP HATING. SHE HELPED ME AVOID WASTING TIME AND MONEY.
