Initial consultations by phone. Two guys, the owner and one other, showed up to do the above work. A couple consultations along the way--as it was a "build as you go" kind of thing. They did it. They improved upon my concepts for a couple of things and it looks much nicer because of that. They cleaned up well. They left.

Met w/ Tom to discuss the work - he gave good suggestions & did quality work

Tom had to reschedule my appointment a few times because of other customers jobs running over. However, he was able to come out on a Saturday to complete these tasks which was not part of the coupon I purchased--but he did not charge me extra. Tom and his helper did a good job of completing these items. One problem was that I noticed the ventilation fan was installed off-centered of the roof whole so about half of the fan was just blowing into the plywood. Tom offered to come back and fix it, but I declined because I plan on replacing the roof in the next few years.

High quality results, high professionalism. We got an Angie's List deal for one day of general contractor work, it took about a day and a half and but he didn't charge us for additional labor. Materials were a little pricey but he got high quality. I would recommend him and use him again.

It went very well. They were hard working, efficient and very professional. We were very happy with the work that was done.

I had gotten quotes for other work that I needed to have done, but then decided I wasn't thrilled with the results of the finished work.

Arrived at 10:30 and gave initial assessment of all items that were requested. He gave his honest opinion if he was able to fix or the job should be handled by a trade professional. If a trade professional was required he gave a name and number to contact. For example; electrical or plumbing. After 5 hours he needed to leave for another personal commitment;however, he did return to finish the remaining 3 hours of the contract another day.

It went very good. Had it removed and Sheetrock I installed in 4 hrs.

BEAUTIFUL WORK!!! I purchased the Angie's Big Deal for a contractor for a day as I had a variety of projects to address. Tom V. had to reschedule our initial appointment in order to complete another job, but that was fine with me as my project was not time-sensitive. Tom V. and I kept in touch via e-mail and phone regarding the project, etc. Tom V. and his finish carpenter, also named Tom, arrived promptly in the morning and I explained my project, which was to install an oak railing in a finished basement stairwell that is "L" shaped, which adds complexity. If time allowed, we had a pillar post that needed shimming and trim to cover the shimming. Tom V. said his finish carpenter, Tom, would do the installation and that he (Tom V.) would come back at the end of the day. Tom V. explained that there would be some pencil markings on the finished walls, which I understood would be necessary to do the job well. Then, Tom and Tom measured and diagramed the railing project on the wall before Tom V. left. There was a wall switch at the bottom of the stairs that was in the way of where the rail would be mounted, so they removed it and I'll have my electrician reinstall as I am having some electrical work done anyway. The railing install is rock solid and the quality of the work is absolutely top-notch. Smooth seams and transitions at all the joints. The workmanship is absolutely beautiful. I was expecting high quality work based on the Angie's reviews and I was still impressed. Tom V. arrived at the end of the day to see the finished job and touch base. I was highly satisfied with the great work done. Tom V. and Tom were great to work with and I would/will definitely use them for future projects. I highly recommend Von Companies.

They were very non-responsive. I tried calling them many times and they never called me back. Eventually they did email us, but it was too late, we already received a refund from Angie's List.

We purchased a BuyNow Deal from Angie's list for a handyman for a day. Tom was on time and when he arrived, he was ready to work. We had him put 3 roof vents in our attic as well as a vent for an exhaust fan. Tom was very thorough and meticulous in his work. He walked through every step with us and we were very happy with his job.

Workmanship was fair to good but required rework to reach final acceptable quality. The job took roughly twice as much longer than anticipated. If you use this provider I recommend a fixed price basis and not an hourly rate.

I ended up getting a refund just because the Deal wasn't exactly what I wanted. He did give me a lot of options and spent a lot of time working with me before it was determined that the Deal wouldn't work. He was extremely professional the entire time.

I purchased a "Big Deal" coupon on Angie's List. It was $299 for one contractor for a full day or two contractors for eight hours. Tom contacted me and we set the appointment for a day that worked for both of us. I live on the opposite side of the Twin Cities as he does, so it made more sense for him to bring an associate with him and come for four hours, allowing him to miss rush hour traffic. This worked perfectly for both of us. Tom and his associate started by putting the final touches on my flooring project, cutting and installing the quarter round in my kitchen, laundry room and hallway. They still had an hour remaining, so they started my bathroom project for me, which was to install wainscoting, base & chair rail in my bathroom. The guys worked on installing the wainscoting on the wall where the plumbing was. I really appreciated their help in doing the "hard stuff" of this bathroom project and giving me pointers on how to do the rest of the work I had remaining. Tom was great and I sincerely appreciated all of their hard work!

I hired Von Companies using an Angie's List Big Deal for 8 hours of handyman services (2 guys for 4 hours). It went perfectly. Tom and his assistant showed up on time, had all of the right equipment for the job, asked all of the important questions, and got to work straight away. They hung the TV first, whic was done perfectly. Then they reattached the laundry chute, which is now in better alignment/order than when I bought the home. After this was complete, there were about 45 minutes left in which to install the baby/pet gates. The gates proved to be a little trickier to install than we expected, but the guys got them in place and put in an extra 30 minutes each at no charge to get the job done right. They did a great job and it was well worth every penny. I would not hesitate to call Von Companies again and would enthusiastically recommend them to anyone needing handyman services.

We had a terrible experience with Von Companies (via the "Hire a General Contractor for a Day" Big Deal through Angie's List). When first speaking to Tom to schedule the work he was very responsive and professional. Our priority projects for him were: installing approximately 10 feet of gutter on one side of an addition to our home, install lattice underneath our very regular sized deck, repair 1 soft board on the underside of an overhang over our kitchen, and repair a hole in our concrete in our front step. We agreed that he would begin the two day work (we had purchased two coupons through Angie's List) on Monday, September 17. On Sunday, September 16 he called and told us that he would would have two contractors on site (he and another contractor) and so the two coupons would be combined into one day (8 hours) with two contractors on duty. On the day of the work Tom and the other contractor did not arrive at our house until close to 10:00 (which was due to an appointment Tom had with his accountant that morning). Tom and his partner then proceeded to set up their materials and tools for the work at a very, very slow pace. Then they started to work and our main complaint with their approach was that you were in no way getting two contractors who divided up the projects and worked independently on their own jobs for the full day as the coupons (and Tom) implied. No, one was the contractor and the other was just the helper. So one project was undertaken at a time and at an unreasonably slow pace by both guys. At approximately 3:30 that day, Tom talked to my husband and told him that they had been working 6 days a week lately and if it was okay with us, they wanted to break early that day and return on Tuesday, September 18 to finish the rest of our projects. My husband said that was fine with him and that we would see them tomorrow. On Tuesday, they arrived at 8:00 am and began their work to finish up the two projects Tom said they could finish in the hours they had left with the coupon (lattice under the deck and the 10 ft of gutter). The problems with the speed of their work truly arose on Tuesday when they charged us an extra $175 for finishing the front section only of the lattice work because they had gone over their allotted 8 hours with the coupons. And they did not finish installing the lattice on the side of the deck as we had agreed to as part of the job. So, in 10 hours (8 hours as part of the coupon deal and 2 extra hours we had to pay for out of pocket) 2 general contractors installed 10 feet of gutter and three panels of lattice underneath our deck (leaving one whole side of the deck exposed). The work they did complete was good work, but there was so little accomplished with two guys working on it full time that we couldn't help feel that we had been completely ripped off by both the Von Companies and the Angie's List Big Deal. We are now in the process of vetting other contracting services/handymen to finish the lattice work and the other two priority items on our list before the snow flies. Very disappointing.

We purchased a home that had been sitting empty for three years. It was built in 1928 and needed updating. Von Company gave us an estimate, we accepted and the work began. Over all it took about three months to complete. The workers were very good to work with. They showed up when they promised and locked up when they left. They kept the place as clean as they could considering the messy jobs they were doing. Tom was the person we worked with for ideas and scheduling. He's very knowledgeable about remodeling and was easy to work with. The only concern was that for us it was the first time we had taken on a project this big and when ideas were suggested, we agreed to them without fully understanding how much it was costing us. It was a learning experience for us. Overall the work is wonderful and I would use Tom and his company again.

This project went very well. I asked Tom to let me know what materials I needed so I could have them on hand, which worked well. They sealed off the kitchen somewhat so the dust would be contained, which was effective. I think it helped that we had gotten everything ready ahead of time (removing the quarter-round, setting up a bagster for the waste, laying out the vinyl so it wasn't rippled or curvy) so they could get right to work. My advice to anyone having any work done is to think through what the people hired will have to do, then remove as many obstacles as possible to keep things flowing.

All correspondence with Tom was professional. He was knowledgeable about the work we were requesting to be done. Wade arrived on time and finished on time. He completed all the work and it looks great.

Disappointed that a company so highly reviewed on Angie's List couldn't respond to an estimate appointment.

Overall, the experience was good. They did a good job replacing the shower doors. The gentlemen who did the work were very professional and thorough. It took a little bit longer than I had anticipated, but for the most part I was happy with what they did.

The very nice worker arrived exactly when they said he would. He had to do a very complicated angle for the crown molding on top of the cabinets and he was able to do so quickly He was also very kind to my husband, who was to finish the job and quite confused, so he showed him carefully how to do what was required. He was a terrific individual and I was very pleased with his work. His boss should give him a raise!

They did a good job, they cleaned up after themselves nicely, and I was happy with what they did. We bought a Big Deal so we paid $300 for the first day and then we paid another $600 for the other work that they did. The man that is in charge is very nice and they guy that he sent out was also nice and very timely. They always showed up when they said they would and they did a good job.
