I looked on the Angieslist for a tree service in my area. North star was at the top of the list. I called them and they came out and gave me a estimate, with different option, from just removing the trees, to removing the trees and the stumps. After North Star had given men the lowest bid, by over $400.00. They came out on the 17th of April and re moved the trees. The original date was the 16th, but the weather was bad that day, and they called to reschedule for the next day which was fine. The trees were very big, one was a very tall, (75 ft) pine that had been badly damaged in a snow storm. All three trees were close to the house and or close to power lines. They removed all of them and the tree stumps in one afternoon, and left my yard in fantastic condition, such as you could hardly tell these 40 plus year old trees where ever there.
Description of Work: North Stare Tree care came and took down three large trees and removed the stumps in my yard.

I called to get an estimate, they were very quick to come out and discuss the work I wanted and to give me the estimate. I agreed to do the work that day and they were going to call back to schedule a time to do the work. They were a bit slow to do that, didn't call when they said they would, and I eventually called them after a few more days. But - when I did call them they did have a time scheduled to do the work. I believe I indicated on the first day that I was pretty flexible with the timing - that may have influenced how quickly they called back. On the day they came to do the work - they had at 3 men to do the work. They did an excellent job communicating with me and working with exactly what I wanted. We discussed exactly how high to raise the lowest branches - made a small change from the estimate, and discussed whether to remove one large branch right at the trunk of the tree or farther out. They had me come out and look and decide what to do. They also were willing to cut two small branches of shrub that I pointed out to them and remove them, that wasn't in the original estimate. They cleaned up the yard, raked up small branches. Overall, I thought the work was excellent - I was very pleased and would use them again.
Description of Work: In our front yard, they removed the lowest branches of two trees to give more clearance. They also removed excess branches from a Linden tree - all the branches that crossed and rubbed on each other. In the back they removed two large (4" diameter) branches from an Ash tree - one that hung over our pool area and one that hung over our house. They also removed a small brush pile that was in the back yard.

I contacted several other companies and they said they could handle it in a week or so. I called North Star and they agreed to help me right away (they had been out for a previous estimate.) They were very skillful and I was amazed on how they were able to protect everything from anymore problems. They worked in the tremendous heat, as well! They removed the storm damaged tree and hauled it away. They also cleaned up very nicely and were very careful to not damage any flower beds or incur any further damage to the house. The original estimate was quoted with them using the crane and they ended up climbing the tree and cutting it into pieces, however, the price of the estimate was not changed from the initial estimate.
Description of Work: I had a huge tree from my yard fall on my neighbor's house removed. They also cut down a limb in a separate part of my yard.

The arborist came to walk the property and hear what I needed done. He made some suggestions. He is very knowledgeable about trees and bushes. Listens well and takes notes for future reference. The crew shows up on on time with all needed equipment. The arborist, crew and I walked through the property to go over everything that needed to be done. Questions are asked, specifics are detailed. The crew completed the work in 5-6 hours, cleaned everything up and did a final walk through to ensure everything was up to the agreed upon terms. They are good workers, thorough and polite.
Description of Work: Removal of 13 trees of 2-12 inch widths, some into power lines Pruning of 6-10 trees for dead branches and to allow people to walk underneath Pruning of overgrown lilac bushes Removal of nondescript brush along lot line (approximately 150 feet) Moved one small oak - 7 feet high but with only 1 inch diameter, but long tap root! All brush taken away Area cleaned up

The North Star crew was friendly and efficient. They worked well together; each person knew their job and completed it so that the whole team was impressive to watch. The tree was effectively removed in less than two hours (grinding the stump, cleaning, lawn repair took approximately four additional hours to complete). As large as the tree was, they made it look like they had practiced it beforehand on our specific tree. Suprises? Not really a surprise, but even though they were careful and layed down plywood where they drove on our lawn, the crane still made indentations in the lawn. I was told that this might happen beforehand, but they were hopeful that it wouldn't. Without being asked, they told me of the damage and insisted on repairing it. The lawn was thoroughly cleaned when they were done. I really believe that with this large of a job (once you bring a very heavy crane into your yard, not just the bucket truck), there is going to be more of an impact on your site. That said, I was pleased with how they responded to any negative impact that was made by their activity. Though I certainly didn't expect this, one of crew members very generously painted a small section of trim on our house that I could not access with a ladder. The section was close to where the tree was cut down, so that it didn't require moving the bucket truck. This crew obviously goes the extra distance to please their customers. They are a nice group of hard working guys. I recommend them strongly and without reservation.
Description of Work: North Star removed a very large (approximately 85' width canopy, 50 to 60' height, multiple stem... really 7 to 8 trees in one) Silver Maple from a St Paul city lot where a large part of our house and a portion of a neighbors house were covered by the canopy. A medium to small sized crane and bucket truck were used in tandom to secure each part of the tree, cut, remove and then process each portion of the tree (approximately one dozens parts in all were transferred to a separate three person crew that cut and ground it). Larger diameter sections were cut into smaller lengths and then removed. Because of the significant cost, I actually received six bids on this job (All from Angie's List providers). I wouldn't recommend this as, at some point it isn't a good use of their or my time (three is a good number). I did this, though, because I was not expecting the estimates to be as high as they were. That said, with tax, the highest estimate was about $4700 and lowest was $3200. I think that any of the companies would of done a good job. However, I went with North Star, not because it was cheapest (it wasn't the least expensive bid), but because it seemed to best combine a more reasonable bid with a very high quality reputation.

North Star Tree Service is now our go-to company for tree removal. They are consistently among the lowest bid, but the real advantage is their promptness and great service. Our property is difficult to get big equipment into (up a narrow lane with low-hanging power lines), and the cottonwood was dead with branches hanging over a power line which could have been dangerous. John worked through the logistical issues with the utility companies but his team knew how to get those branches down without needing to cut our neighbors' power after all. They are so efficient they finished early, and cleaned up so well you can hardly tell they've been there. I think this is because they have very sophisticated equipment ("the right tool for the job"), including a remote-powered stump grinder that is really fun to watch.

We lost our 75 year old Elm to disease. We worked with North Star before, so they were first on our list. John kept us apprised of the scheduling, Nathan and the crew arrived promptly. Nathan isn't only the foremen and bucket guy, he's also an arborist. They worked quickly and efficiently. One of the reasons why we really like these guys (besides the across the board A ratings) is something Nathan said "We hate to bring trees down, we'd much rather work on them, and do what it takes to keep them around as long a possible." They left the yard and street neat and and tidy and offered to come back in the Spring to repair the divots caused from falling branches.

John came out the next day (Aug. 14) after I called him for an estimate. We walked around the yard and I showed him what trees needed what done to them. He was able to provide me an estimate of the work (which included sales tax and the discount for being a member on Angie's list). I felt his estimate was fair and we agreed upon a date when the work would be done before he left my house. He followed up with a phone call a week prior to make sure the date still worked for me. John came out with a crew of 4 and went over w/them, the work we agreed upon before he left for his another job. The foreman for this job, went around w/me right before they were done to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. The guys did a great job and it took around 3 1/2 hours to complete the work from start to clean up. The crew cleaned up our yard and the street area of all the leaves from the tree branches they took down and mulched w/their machine. Overall, John and his crew were all polite and very professional. When my husband came home, he was very pleased with their work too. He said they did an excellent job on grinding down the stumps of the 2 trees. He made this comment based on another tree service we had hired 2 years ago to perform the same work on one of our trees that had split and had to be removed due to a storm too.
Description of Work: Cut down, removal and stump grinding was done on 2 trees (one damaged by recent storm and the other one that had died a year ago). Also, cut and removed 3 huge tree limbs from other trees due to over growth and as preventative measures against potential house damage to our's and our neighbors if another storm hit our area. Plus, matainance (pruning and trimming) on other trees on our property.

North Star came out while we were out of town and left an estimate for the work that we needed done. We were extremely pleased with the price they quoted. We were able to set up an appointment to have the work done within a couple of weeks. It probably could have been sooner but I wanted to have the work done on my day off. Nathan and his crew came out and did a great job. When they were done they cleaned up the yard to perfection and cleaned up and evened out the areas where trees had been removed. The price was $1,650 but we used a $100 coupon that he had listed on Angie's list to bring the price down to $1,550. We were very pleased with all the work and the professional crew. I highly recommend North Star Tree Care and would hire them again if needed.
Description of Work: North Star removed one very large spruce tree, one very large ash tree, one very large pine tree, five large overgrown junipers, three lilac bushes, and one small mulberry tree. They also ground the roots of a tree that had been removed a few years ago by another company. .

Over several years we've been approached many times by in-the-neighborhood peddlers wanting to tend the trees. Call them the "Have Chainsaw; Will Travel" types. Once started work with such and an hour later stopped it dead because they were butchering the trees. Since then, been very careful. North Star took the bid, made sure the man who bid the work was also on site to assure compliance with the desired attention to detail. A great job is worth extra payment.
Description of Work: Took bids from contractors, three listed with Angie, all "A" rating. Prices ranged from $600 to $1800. The $600 price proved to be a do-it-now or pay more later offer. North Star walked the property with me, took copious notes re what I expected and offered good advice on what to do. The only problem was that they didn't realize that apple trees, moreso than other species, could not be trimmed after they bloom in Spring, as I learned from the University of Minnesota agricultural extension service. Accordingly, we waited until Sept to undertake the total trimming job. When I asked for trimming bushes not first included, North Star made sure to inform there would be extra charge which I approved. They did excellent work for a right-price. Very friendly, informed and respectful team effort by North Star.

Due to the weather conditions, it would be a liability to the customer and to our company to climb in wet, slippery trees which remain wet for hours after the rain. In October alone, we took 4 days off due to the rain. Where as in the summer season we took 2 or 3 days off due to rain. Four other customers were scheduled to do work on the same day and all four were understanding due to the situation.

We were struggling with the best thing to do with our giant silver maple. We consulted several resources, and went with N.E. Tree, because after talking with many tree companies began to recognize the difference of a certified arborist. George takes trees very seriously, and approaches them with utmost care for their health and the environment that they are in. We felt we were making the best decision to keep the tree, and learn to take good care of it, vs. removing it. N.E. Tree is a small operation, but I quickly learned that they are experts in large, urban trees. They did an amazing, thorough prune of our tree, and they strapped the tree to ensure if it does fall, it will not fall on our house! They recommended for us to put 5 inches of mulch at the base of the tree, to keep in moisture, and kill off water sucking grass around the tree. We have followed their instructions, and the tree looks GREAT. We have very lilttle debris falling in out yard this spring, and now that we know the difference a pruning can make to a tree, we would recommend this process to anyone struggling for a solution for a big tree. They gave us good sound advive, were honest, and we preserved a great source of shade for our home and energy bills. The tree will be fine, if we take care of it.

John came out for an estimate to remove a very large pear tree next to my house. He arrived on time, inspected the tree and yard before knocking on my door, and was polite and thorough when describing what work would be done. The only reason I didn't use this company was their price was $225 more than the other company I ended up using. They did offer to match the other company's bid, but when I went back to the other company they gave me a better offer.

We had several large trees that needed to be trimmed, including one that was too close to some wires that ran to our neighbor's house. John was very prompt in returning our initial call and providing an estimate and he was willing to set up a payment plan for us. He is very nice and did a very thorough job. He arranged for the utility company to come out and deal with the wires and our neighbors were very pleased with how the bordering tree looks. The trees are beautifully shaped. The bidding was very professional-he looked at the way trees were growing, their distance from the roof, the evenness, etc. and recommended which trees needed to be trimmed. We chose to do most of the work recommended but not all, and they were fine with that. The men came with lots of equipment and did everything in one afternoon.
