I didn't choose to hire Vern, but very much enjoyed meeting with him. He was very responsive to my inquiry, and provided a competitive bid in a timely manner. Vern seems to be a very capable and knowledgeable sole proprietor, and I felt like I would have needed to play more of the project manager role, at a time when I couldn't afford that sort of extra time and involvement.

Vern was amazing. We could not be happier. We love our porch, it turned out exactly as we envisioned and we get compliments all the time. His price was very fair- we got a lot more for our money as he doesn't have a big crew or marketing budget, etc. Vern was a delight to work with- a genuinely good person- and his workmanship was outstanding.

Amazing. As a mature single woman, this is the first major project I handled by myself. I went through 7-8 interviews until I found Mathis Construction. Mr. Mathis is very professional and a true craftsman. Vern was considerate, responsive , honest and hard working. I still have some staining and decorating to do, but I absolutely love my new space.

Vern did a great job. Came when he promised, did quality work at a great value and cleaned up before leaving. I'm going to contact him again this Spring for more help.

Vernon is a great guy that I would have had no problem building my new deck. However, is simply was booked too far out to meet our time-frame for the deck, otherwise we would have hired him no questions asked. You can tell he knows decks inside and out and was able to offer a lot of solid input right off the bat.

Vern and his partner were great - high quality, good price, and very nice to work with.

Vern started quickly and rebuilt the deck within a week. His craftsmanship was excellent. Only issue was that a post developed a large split, Vern did not come to repair as promised.

We first contacted Vern in early June regarding rebuilding our deck. It initially took about 2 months to get on his calendar. When he went to pull the permit, we discovered our plans went onto the "association" land (we live in a townhome association and the Board wasn't aware of the restrictions). It was back to the drawing board and back to the end of the line on Vern's calendar. He finally began the project in early October. Once started, he did quality work. It took about one week to remove the old deck and complete the new deck. Vern was onsite each day with one helper. This is the second home where we have removed and rebuilt a deck and Vern's work is top quality. It shows in all aspects of the new deck. We would highly recommend his work.

Mathis Construction gave me an initial bid with multiple options and we worked together to get the price within my budget. The job included removal of the old leaking flat roof and remaining deck from above my entryway, installing new flat roofing system (rubber membrane) and completely replacing the ~12x16 deck on top including new fascia, flooring, decking and railing. Vern and his crew gave me a start date, showed up on time and worked the job straight through to completion. They were always professional, courteous, friendly, and continually kept the jobsite clean. They even filled in some worn out insulation needed under the old roof portion on their own. I'm not sure what else could have been better. It was exactly as we agreed on and done in a very reasonable amount of time - like a week for the entire job. The quality of materials used, craftsmanship, sturdy design elements and solid construction is outstanding. I'm extremely pleased and highly recommend these professional craftsman for you project. We hired Vern to be our general contractor for our master suite addition. He built this on top of our existing 15'x18' foundation which previously had a flat roof. I haven't done any official measurements but it added roughly 300 square feet to our home - another bathroom, bedroom and closet. The results are amazing, we LOVE IT. Vern is a great guy - hard worker, easy to work with, he knows what good work is and does a fantastic job himself. His quote came in spot on at the end of the project despite multiple changes. He also replaced the siding on the front of our house, replaced a sliding patio door in our kitchen and 4 interior doors. Get quotes early because projects get booked up quickly. We got about 4 quotes for this project. This was about 8 months or more before we actually intended to start our project which we wanted to start early summer 2015. We did a range of companies, big companies to smaller like Vern. Everyone but Vern was much higher, some up to $20k more! Vern was the only one to actually bring in sub-contractors to give him bids as well so he could give us a more accurate bid. We liked that level of detail. I am also a major DIY type and Vern had no problem with me doing work in addition to his team - not all contractors are open to this. We designed this ourselves and had working drawings made by an architect and Vern took it from there. We put our trust in Vern and gave him the key to our house because we both work; he never let us down. Everything was always locked up when we got home. He took care of permits and inspections. I never had to deal with city inspectors and there were multiple inspections with framing, roofing, HVAC, plumbing and electrical work being done. Many trades made this happen and I would say in general all were really good. Vern's craftsmanship is top notch. He pays great attention to detail. We also had Excel bury our electrical service during this project (not included in above cost). I guess my biggest complaint is that we should have been told to put that request in early. It took over a month for Excel to come out and this held a lot of work up. As part of the electrical service burial we also had the electrician upgrade our panel from 100amp to 200amp service (that cost is included above). Vern's tile guy was incredible! He hand built a custom shower for us and easily saw our vision; it turned out just as I imagined it would. We did all the interior painting to save some money so that is not included in above cost. The carpet was installed by another contractor and is not included in the above cost, that was $2,600. We had the entire house painted as well by another company for $3k. We also had another company replace our garage door for $1,100. But wait, there's more! We bought all the bathroom valves, fixtures, shower heads, all tile, toilet, granite countertop, double vanity, linen closet and more. When I added it all up it was about $69k - about $53k of that to Vern - but remember we did more than just the addition. Vern's time was about 2 months but our portion was more due to moving stuff, painting and further contractor work after Vern was done. Vern did a great job at keeping things moving and there weren't many days where nothing happened. Sometimes that was just due to weather though. We would definitely hire Vern again, he was a pleasure to work with. Thank you Vern and all the other craftsman that made this project happen!!!

Mathis Construction built an amazing 16' X 26' deck for our new home. It is a walkout so the deck is at height and the result is breathtaking. Vern is a true example of someone who takes pride in his work and he ensured everything was done to perfection. A good example of the type of work that Vern's company does was personified by his willingness to work with us on design details, including a beautiful pattern he came up with to lay the boards and bring interest to the floor of the deck. When asked why he pounds every nail in the deck by hand he simply answered "I build it as if it were for my home, and that is the right way to do it". I had originally reached out to Mathis for a quote for our basement which they quoted extremely competitively but ultimately we decided to hold off on the basement and wanted to do a deck for the spring. Due to the professionalism Vern had shown on the basement quote we contacted him for the deck as well. Of the 5 deck quotes we received, he was close to the cheapest, but delivered more value including better quality build materials than others making him a clear choice. I would highly recommend Mathis for your next project.

Vern and his crew did an excellent job. Does beautiful work and I am very happy with my new space. The time line to finish the project worked fine for me. Kept the space clean each day when they were done. I would definitely recommend Vern for your next remodel job.

The deck is gorgeous! The workmanship is incredible, everything is flawless. We couldn't be happier with this deck, and can't wait to have family and friends over to admire it. Vern was excellent. GREAT craftsmanship, down to sanding the edges on the deck, pre-drilling holes, etc. We have owned previous houses and had previous decks built and none were even close to the same quality. He was extremely punctual and respective, asking if it was okay for him to work over the holiday weekend. The work was completed in a very timely manner and on time. He was extremely clean, kept the work area free of debris and completely cleaned up everything after he was done. We did not need to do a thing. We would definitely hire Vern again for any future projects.

Vern gave me a call the same day that I placed the request. He let me know that he would come out to take a look, and he did as promised. He secured the deck beautifully, in a V shape, underneath the deck. Very secure now, rock solid. The price that he quoted was exactly the price I ended up paying, so no surprises, which is the way it should be. This is a very professional company, and also very honest; they have very good listening skills, and they deliver as promised. What more can one ask for. I would do business with them again without hesitation. Highly recommend them.

Amazing craftsmanship!! We have been slowly updating home inside and out and have had many builders contractors come into the home. Most have very little pride in their work. Just another job to get done and earn a paycheck. We interviewed several large and small contractors and choose Vern and his son to replace our deck. What an amazing choice! Vern gave us a time line, stuck too it, competed and picked up after the job. His craftsmanship is beautiful! Whats even more amazing is our neighbors very large tree fell on our home and deck the week of our very large family gathering. Thankfully minor work on home, deck railing damaged. Vern was out the next day fixed and replaced boards. Took longer to clean up the tree vs. deck. We will definitely ask Vern and his son to do other projects. Great service, price perfect!! As die-hard do-it-yourselfers, we are always a little hesitant when hiring a contractor. We had come up with a fairly unusual add-on garage design that required some creative engineering and construction and realized that we were over our heads and needed a good general contractor. After writing up the design and showing it to different potential bidders, we decided on Vern Mathis. He is very professional, prompt, and does great work. Vern's obvious knowledge, experience, and connections really paid off in the end. One of our requirements involved finding the right kind of engineer to verify the suitability to expand on our site. I had tried many people and companies with no success. Vern took on the task and through his contacts and perseverance was able to find the right guy. The project was started in late fall and went into the start of winter. There was a lot of lousy weather but Vern and his crews showed up every day on time. They are consummate professionals. It was really a pleasure watching and working with such competent people and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend or hire them again.

They tore out the old deck but kept the footings and base. They added 4 footings and used Axek for the deck. We are very pleased with the quality and the look of the deck.

Our home did not have a separate family and living room. We just had one room which was being used as a family and living room. We did have good space in back yard for a reasonable deck and a good size room. We called quite a few people to give us quotes. They turned out to be beyond our reach. On our friend's recommendation we called Vern Mathis to give us a quote. Vern visited and it turned a corner for us. He took lots of efforts to understand exactly what we were expecting, He surveyed the lot very carefully. Took detailed measurements of everything. In a few days he came up with a detailed drawing of how he saw the finished project would look, what difficulties were there and how he could get around with those and cost wise what options we had. He managed to bring it within our reach and soon started the project. We observed that Vern is very hard working, very methodical, excellent project manager, punctual and had all the skills needed for the job. He showed up every single day for work at right time. Throughout the project he kept the whole area very clean. We did not have any inconvenience due to the construction. Finished the project on time and it turned out to be the best investment we ever made. Every one who sees the room and deck for the first time, does ask - who did the job? Many people have asked me Vern's contact number, and I am happy to provide them.

It’s a one man company. He seemed to be right upfront and he seemed to know what he was talking about. He laid everything out in order so that we knew what we were paying for and how did it sum up to the quote amount. It was very nice. He did a very nice job of it. He was fine with me. Anyone would be happy using him. He was very clear and upfront about everything. There were no surprises or anything afterwards. He was very responsive and very punctual. He’s very professional. As far as I’m concerned, he’s been discreet so far. I would use his services again in the future.

We had a small house with only living room (great room), but we had enough room in the yard to make a family room and a deck. We got Vern's reference from a friend. We called him and his visit was a pleasant experience. He is very good at listening to you and understanding what you want. He honestly told us what was possible and what was not given our budget constraints and construction code. By the way Vern is a House Inspector, so he knows the construction codes very well. He showed interest and sincerity. Took all measurements, and drew sketches. We wanted him to build a deck and a family room which would have entry from our kitchen and the living room. (room size 14 X 16 ft) We have look out basement (not walk out). Vern came up in few days with a design and detailed cost (quote). We had previously invited a few quotes from other people. No one was as detail and as reasonable as Vern's. We immediately signed the contract. Vern started the work exactly as promised. He is an excellent project manager and outstanding home builder. He did all the work by himself with some help from his son. Everything was scheduled perfectly with no time wastage and he kept the whole area very clean and neat. Every one visiting our home during construction had lot of praise for Vern's work. After the work was complete exactly in 6 weeks, every one visited us liked the work so much that they needed his contact for something at their house. Vern is a person of few words, but his work quality and work ethics is outstanding. He will be our go to person for every remodeling project in future.
