Most importantly, their service did lower the radon level well below the safety cutoff. And Randy did seem committed to making sure our levels were properly lowered, and seemed to have a lot of experience doing so. However, I wouldn't recommend RRI for a number of reasons. Their scheduling process was rather strange, and one gets the impression that Randy is more concerned with his schedule than his clients' schedules. On our initial phone call he asked to speak with a man--not a good start. Consultation was very thorough, but was done when Randy was already going to be in our area, leaving the appointment time unknown until 12 hours beforehand. Priority on installation was given to any customers who were trying to close on a home. We were told we'd be called as an estimated install date, weeks ahead, approached, but were not called and had to follow up ourselves only to be given another date a few more weeks in the future. This led to our installation taking many weeks to be scheduled. The installation team arrived on time and their work was very clean in a finished basement, and they completed the job quickly. We requested to have the fan wired to a specific junction, but it would have taken a little more effort and the installers opted to do it a different--easier way. Not directly the fault of RRI, but after a week in the sun, the white fan they choose turned yellow. I wouldn't recommend this company to others in my situation. But I might consider RRI if you're closing on a home and need to take care of a radon problem--assuming you're keeping the fan out of the sun, and are willing to let the installers make final decisions on installation--they do neat work that functions as advertised, and install it all rather quickly.
Description of Work: Installed a sub-slab depreciation to lower radon levels below 1pCi/L.

Response from Radon Removal Inc
This home is owned and occupied by a brother and sister. The initial contact was from the sister. When I had questions she couldn't answer, she told me to call her brother, as he was a lot more familiar with the technical details of the home. I've never done anything as boorish as asking to "speak with a man". The sister accepted our proposal on May 22. I told her that the backlog was 4 to 5 weeks and I would call her on Thursday or Friday the week before we wanted to schedule her home. Her work was done June 27, 5 weeks and one day later. When possible, we install the radon fans in the attic, not outside. That was not possible here. Two manufacturers provide virtually all radon fans, and both use white plastic that yellows in the sun.

Checked a few contractors, Randy W.(owner) was the most informative and all the details were handled by phone/email. The proposal was on the high end for pricing, but he was assuming the worst case scenario I think. The installation was actually scheduled only about 2 weeks out as I was flexible when they could come. Jason and Pat arrived as scheduled late morning. Took them less than 10 minutes to decide their route out of the home for the piping. Laid down drop cloths and went to work immediately. They were finished complete in less than 3 hours. Amazing considering the attic space they had to access to complete the installation. After they cleaned up, only evidence they were even there was the new piping in the basement. They also were very informative and answered my questions. This is not my first "go around" with Radon, so I was already somewhat knowledgeable of the process. All 3 of these guys were honest and professional, a far cry from what so many people encounter when dealing with contractors. Post install testing confirmed the sub slab mitigation worked excellent, as intended. An overall great experience for us, considering we were selling our home and have had many things that were not!! Thanks Randy,Jason, and Pat for a great job, well done.
Description of Work: Selling home, Radon reading was found to be higher than EPA guidelines during home inspection process. Radon Removal Inc. installed a subsurface slab system to lower the level in the home.

Randy and co did a great job. Setting up an appointment was a little awkward with their system (they set jobs on a weekly basis and call you to see if you are available that week as opposed to just setting a date - I understand why they do it, but I prefer solid date and time committments at time of agreement). Once the appointment was established, the guys were right on time, courteous and professional, and worked until the job was done. They did a great job of explaining what they were doing and why and gave me a final rundown after it was finished. From start to finish, both the installers and Randy were very helpful with answering questions from an admitted radon novice.

Randy was contacted in mid November. He talked me into a subslab depressurization system over an ERV system. We talked about my house configuration and that the tube would be located outside the house. He asked if I was ok with a flexible schedule and I said I was as I had a plumbing project going on at the same time that would preclude the installation of subslab depressurization. I was finished with that project in early December. By January it was apparent to me that Randy was more concerned about his schedule than mine. His approach to scheduling appears to be call the day before he wants his crew to be out to complete the work and badger you with that date or he gives that slot to someone else. The crew when they showed up were professional and quick. The radon levels were reduced to adequate levels. As it turns out I should have used the ERV system as I later found out my house does not have enough air exchanges per hour and will require an ERV or continuously running exhaust fan. In the end the system they installed works but there was probably a better solution for my house.
Description of Work: Installed subslab depressurization system in my basement vented through a side wall to the outside and through the roof. Tested the far end of the basement for suction from the installed tube. Left a radon test to check that levels were adequately reduced.

Response from Radon Removal Inc
Homes that were built or remodeled to be nearly airtight will need an ERV to provide fresh air. The client's home was built in 1913, appears to have the original stucco exterior and does not appear to have had extensive work to reduce air infiltration. Without an expensive "blower door" test, it would be difficult to accurately conclude that an ERV was needed. Our clients are told that we have a 4 or 5 week backlog, but that at the end of each week we set up the schedule for the following week. I feel this provides the best service to our clients. If we booked solid for 4 or 5 weeks out, we may not have the flexibility to meet your unique needs. If we have a cancellation, you might get a call to ask if we can do your home the next day.

I had 3 times the level of Radon acceptable in my basement. Randy was very knowledgable, they spent alot of time with me on the phone before even visiting my house. Within one week they came to see the premises and did the work. This company DOES NOT do Radon testing which is a plus, as there is no conflict of interest in their estimates. They actually came early, called first, and they cleeaned up very nicely. They explained the system very thoroughly and I felt confident that my home would be safer with my new mitigation fan system. The test now reads 1.07 vs. 8-12!! I highly recommend them.

We had concerns about both the efficacy and the aesthetic outcome about the project, but Randy was able to address all our questions and was also confident about the outcome (we'd had another company come out that chose not to take on the job). We also wondered whether a winter installation might cause problems. No need to worry. They arrived on time, completed the work quickly and our radon levels dropped from 5.7 to under 1.5. Good piece of mind--thanks, Randy!

Let me tell you, this company is top of the line from beginning to end. I sent an email on the afternoon of May 6, and by 6PM the owner, Randy, called me on the phone and asked be a lot of questions about the house and what the radon count was when tested. He then said he was going to look up specifics about the house online and get back to me shortly, which he did. He then explained the whole process from start to finish and gave me an estimate on the phone, which I accepted. He then drew up a proposal and sent it to me in an email (PDF) , I signed it and sent it back in a reply email. He said he would call me in a day or so when he worked out the schedule for the following week, and surprisingly I was set up for the following Wednesday, May 11, at noon. Two gentleman, Chris and Jason, arrived promptly at noon that day and explained what they would be doing and that it would only take a couple of hours, and of course they were right on. I wrote them a check and thanked them for their GREAT service from beginning to end. WOW! My faith has been restored, there still are good company’s out there, you just have to find them. Thanks to Angie's List I did...... Mike - Shakopee

Fantastic. Based on a few questions and some information about the house, they were able to determine what needed to be done before even arriving. When we tested our new house, we were at three times the EPA limit. Randy appraised our house and gave us an estimate that was almost exactly the final cost. The team took two or three hours to install the radon system. They did a great job. The installation is hardly noticeable; they did a great job of hiding the pipes in crawl spaces and closets. Our radon level is now just about zero!

Randy was able to give an estimate via email after a few phone conversations. All I had to do was to give Randy the general layout of my house and he was able to fill in the details as if he had been in the house. The installation crew, Chris and Jason, worked together like a well-oiled machine. Each of them performed their specific tasks well. I really liked the way they demonstrated how the system worked using their smoke-making gizmo to show air movement. The crew provided a radon test kit to check the post-mitigation radon level. I kept the kit in place for three days and then mailed it, but for some reason, it took longer than eight days for the kit to reach the lab which invalidated the test. Once the test was invalidated, Radon Removal sent another test kit. When I mailed the replacement kit, it made it to the lab on time and showed that the mitigation worked since my radon level decreased from over 4 pCi/L to less than 0.3 pCi/L.

It went much quicker than we thought. The two technicians, Chris and Jason, came out and got it all done in one day. They drilled test holes, installed the pipes, fan, etc. and made accomodations for all three sumps. They placed two AirChek tests when they left to test the results. 7.5 was my original test result, after the work it was 3.2. Randy wanted to get it even lower so they came back out to adjust a damper and the result went down to 1.3. We were impressed with their willingness to get the number as low as it could be and were really happy they came back out, no questions asked - in fact it was their idea. We highly recommend Randy and his team.
Description of Work: Our home has three sump pumps and has had two additions put on in the past, so has a complicated foundation as well. Randy came in and carefully evaluated the situation and mapped out exactly what needed to be done. We had others come out to look at our situation but no one was as confident and as knowledgeable as he was about the situation. We considered an air exchanger and other options but went with Radon Removal because they are so specialized and had the most experience.

I had just about all of the local radon companies. Everyone told me a different way they were going to do the job because it required linking 2 different areas since the house had a basement addition. Radon Removal was great. The guy came out and spent about an hour and 1/2 figuring out the best way to do the job with the least amount of damage. It worked out perfect. Of course you only really need a mitigation system put in once but if I had to do it again in a different house this is the company I would use.

We were very pleased -- both with the service and the results -- regarding the radon mitigation system that was installed. Randy responded immediately to our request for an estimate and installation date, and had vast knowledge about the topic altogether. Dean did an excellent job with the installation. He was extremely conscientious about the work done in our basement and attic -- and was very patient and knowledgeable in answering the many questions we had throughout the process. The system has reduced our radon level from 5.9 to 0.8. They did an excellent -- and painless -- job!

After measuring a radon level of 11 in the finished basement, I had three contractors bid on a mitigation system. The first two came to the house and prescribed a sub-slab suction system with a suction point in the floor of the basement, fan in the garage, and a seal over the sump pump well. Randy from Radon Removal did not visit the house but did a quote over the phone. After asking many specific questions about the construction of the house, he outlined the exact same recommendation of those that did see the house. He provided a competitive bid in writing within a few days. I sat on the bids for a while as I was busy, but he called one day and offered a slight discount if I could agree to do the work in the next few days. I agreed to the bid of $1095. His son installed the system in less than a day, even after needing extra pipe to add a second suction point. Unfortunately, the reading came back at around 2.9. We did a second measurement that came to 3.5. Radon Removal's guarantee was to be at or below 2.5, so his son came back to add a 3rd suction point. This third point was on the other side of the basement and they cleverly hid it under the drop down ceiling and inside a basement closet. The final reading was 1.1. Through the whole process, Randy and his team were professional and timely. Randy said this home a bit unusual in that the drain tile was only gravel, not tubing, making a traditional system of a single suction point insufficient. He held his price and final radon level guarantee. I would recommend Radon Removal to anyone.

Radon Removal Inc. was the only company we called(out of 4 I think)that actually came out to our home to give us an estimate on the mitigation system and how it would be done. Other companies just asked us questions over the phone...to me, that didn't cut it! So, Radon Removal was here for about an hour showing us what would be done and explaining the entire process. Something I highly value. We set-up an appointment and they arrived on-time, completed the work, and again answered all my questions along the way. The process is something most people have never seen and they were SO patient with my questions...like they actually cared that I knew what was being done. White tubes(PVC or something similar)had to placed in our house somewhere so that the radon-containing air could be sucked out of the house. Radon Removal checked all possible locations of the tubing, looking for an inconspicuous place. They found one in our storage space under the stairs and made sure that it did not affect our shelving storage, etc. Then, they noticed that our sump pump had to be closed off(which was fine because we don't use it)and they used a simple process to do that. They also needed to install a scuttle access to our garage attic so that they could put the(very quiet)fan that helps suck out the radon-containing air outside. They charged a nominal fee for that...but I appreciated that they were concerned that the fan should be in the garage attic and not the house attic in case any soft humming could be heard from the fan. But they still gave us the choice. Lastly, they had our air tested again(they had us do so before the process started to make sure we actually needed a mitigation system). The radon level dropped from 4.6 pCi/L to less than 0.5 pCi/L. The EPA recommends that you get a mitigation system if your radon level exceeds 4.0 pCi/L.

At our request, they installed the system in a difficult location in the furnace room off the garage. That reduced the radon level from 3.9 to 3.3. Then they installed a more powerful fan which reduced the radon level to 2.4. Finally, they installed an additional feeder line which reduced the radon level to 1.1. Dean and Chris did a fine job of installing the pipes and fan and did a superb cleanup afterwards. We would definitely recommend Radon Removal Inc. for this kind of a job.

I liked that they were very responsive. I called on a Thursday and had the job scheduled for a Monday. He was able to find the specifics of my house and then handle the quote over the phone. The crew was always very prompt and courteous. All during this process Randy was very accessible and helpful. Even though his crew made about 5 trips out to my house Randy stuck to his original price. I even asked him about charging more and he said "no, this is what we do". I would not hesitate to use him again.
Description of Work: Randy installed a radon removal system for me. When he did the quote over the phone he thought this would be a simple job since I had a sump pump. My house was not simple and Randy installed a second suction pipe, this still did not bring my radon level down. Due to the fact I have a finished basement Randy then installed on different trips several temporary suction pipes so not to disturb the finished part of the basement. Randy found the solution to my problem and the radon is now at a safe level.
