Twin City Garage Door Co

Garage Doors, Doors, Electrical

About us

Twin City Garage Door was founded in 1965, and has been a leader in its industry for over 50 years. We have 4 locations; New Hope, St. Paul, Burnsville and St. Cloud. We service the 9 county metro area as well as the St. Cloud area. There we are known as GDS. Visit our websites; www.twincitygaragedoor.com in the cities or www.gdsmidwest.com in the St. Cloud and lakes area. Don’t be fooled by imposters who have set up web addresses confusingly similar to ours! We do both commercial and residential repairs and installations. We do commercial rolling steel, fire doors, high speed doors, partitions ,shutters and grilles. We have a HUGE inventory of doors and openers in stock, including a wide range of attractive residential doors and can special order custom wood doors as well. If repair parts are still available for your door and opener, we either have them in stock or can order them. Our service vans are rolling warehouses widely stocked with commonly needed parts. Because of the longevity, experience, training and expertise of our staff and crew, we can do the difficult jobs nobody else will touch, like a door 40’ up in the air at the MSP airport. We excel at common garage door problems too, like broken springs, cables, rollers, etc. Our crew are all employees, not subcontractors, so they have a vested interest in the reputation and success of the company. All of them have been here a long time and know what they are doing. We do not let a new technician out on his own until he has been thoroughly trained. We have an A+ rating at the BBB and pride ourselves on customer service, during and after the sale! We have won numerous awards over the years, including here on Angie’s List, but our most important goal is to have a happy customer! Our garage door opener was about 10-15 years old, and frequently not working. TC Garage Door is always very helpful with over-the-phone trouble shooting. Recently, the door opener stopped working altogether. Tim came out on January 16 and delivered the verdict that the opener's motor had failed. He recommended that replacement made the most sense, as repair would be nearly as much as replacement. I took a week to research openers, while we opened and closed the door manually. Then one of the wheels came off the track, and we could not open and close the door. I called TC Garage Door and scheduled repair of the wheel/track and replacement of the opener. They were very prompt in scheduling, gave me a lower price than Tim had quoted, and scheduled for three days later. Scott came out on-time on the scheduled date. I really appreciated that he was willing to call ahead so I could come home from work to meet him, rather than having to be home for a two hour block. Scott fixed the broken wheel, installed the new opener, and removed the old one. It took just over an hour.

One of our garage door openers stopped working. Called TCGD and they were able to schedule a repair for two days later. I described the problem over the phone and the scheduler was able to give me a quote on what he thought the probelm was (stripped gear drive). When the technician arrived, it did turn out to be the gear drive and I was charged exactly as quoted. The service call was $90 and the remaining $40 was for the part/labor to fix. Came on time and was finished within 30 minutes with the repair.

A new installation of a garage door opener, with upgrade to 3/4 hp for $319, with two remotes and keypad. Far cheaper than another highly rated company I checked. Excellent installation, but a neighbor had trouble with them, requiring several visits.

Basic replacement of my 35+ year old garage door with new insulated metal door. Installer was very business-like and capable. The company did not try to sell me a new opener to replace current 10 yr old door. They suggested keeping existing lift if it was functioning properly. I appreciated their trying to serve my best interests rather than replace older but usable equipment.

Originally Twin Cities Garage came to help me determine that my garage door opener wasn't opening because I'd accidentally misaligned the security eyes while moving some junk. They didn't charge me for that, and advised that I'd eventually need to replace the door. I said I'd definitely be in touch when the situation was a little closer to being a need. The need arose pretty dramatically. The adhesive bond finally gave way, and the door buckled, making it inoperable. We were without a door for several weeks as Twin Cities Garage Door had to fit us into their schedule. But they were prompt on the day they'd committed, and had I not gone out to observe the work, they probably would have simply knocked on the door for payment once the job was done.
Description of Work: Twin City Garage Doors removed my old steel garage door and replaced it with a new one. The job required a bit of extra firring on either side of the doors to ensure the new tracks would mount and align properly. In a couple of hours, I had a new door that was well-tuned. I won't have to worry about the garage door sticking in the cold anymore!

The way how Laurie talked to me on the phone, it made me feel disrespected on many levels and the worst part is that it comes from people who I pay for their service. Because this reason, I emailed Laurie back to cancel their service for 5/22/2012 shortly after the phone call.
Description of Work: I called to schedule service call for broken spring problem on Monday 5/21/2012. Laurie E answered the call. To protect Laurie E's privacy, I decided not to use her last name. She gave me the estimate price for replacing both spring for $184. I asked if I can use coupon from Angie's list. Laurie said that there isn't any coupon that she aware of. The way how she said, I felt very disrespectful and she made me doubt myself. I asked her to give a couple of minutes to check the Angie's list April publication. I offered to scan the coupon and send it to her as proof. At the end of phone, she agreed to use Angie's list coupon. I I feel disrespected by Laurie E conversation on many levels and the worst part is that it comes from people who I pay for their service. Because this reason, I emailed Laurie back to cancel their service for 5/22/2012 shortly after the phone call.

The customer dealt on the phone and by email with a woman with a different name on this issue. I heard the entire conversation from the customer's end, and do not feel I heard anything disrespectful at all. It is true that the customer was unaware of the Angie's list coupon, but when it was shown to her she accepted it with no problem. The other woman cancelled the service order and we did no work for her. We are sorry she feels disrespected, certainly no disrespect was intended. We do hope the second woman recieved a quality garage door repair elsewhere. -Lisa Donabauer President Twin City Garage Door Co.

After two companies told us they could not get the part (the bottom "masonite" pane) to replace in each of our two garage doors, Twin Cities Garage Door did so without a problem. We were thrilled to save more than $1,000.00 as our doors were in good shape except the bottoms. It pays to not accept the first "can't be done" that you hear.

Overall, it was a flawless repair. I do not hesitate to recommend them.
Description of Work: They replaced a broken garage door. They responded quickly and performed the repair in a timely manner. They cleaned up so well that, except for the new door, you couldn't tell anyone had worked there. What really impressed me was that they talked me out of replacing the opener. I had told them that I thought the opener needed to be replaced also, but they convinced me that would be an unnecessary expense. They were right; it works just fine.

One thing to note: they have different phone numbers for different areas of the Twin Cities. The number listed on Angie's List is not the number for St. Paul. They'll get you in touch with the right folks if you call that number, but it might take a day or so for the messages to get relayed and somebody to get back to you. So you might want to just check their website and get the right number for your area. I have a single car garage that had old barn-style doors. Turns out the reason they'd never been "upgraded" is due to low headroom inside the garage (there's a loft area inside). I'd originally called Hamline Garage Door for an estimate, but there was more carpentry work they they do to solve the low headroom problem and they referred me to Twin City Garage Door. Worked with Scott over the phone and he was great to work with. I was slow to respond to his voicemails, so it took awhile to get it scheduled. Totally my fault. Once we did, they gave me a two- or three-hour window when the installer would show up. He showed up on time, said it would be three or four hours and it was. Door works great. It's a garage door, I'm not sure what other kind of feedback I can give. It opens and closes, just like it's supposed to. :)

I don’t think there was anything I disliked. I liked that they came out quickly, the same day. About two weeks later the coils on the spring came undone and they came out right away and they fixed it at no charge because it was due to the springs. They actually put a heavier spring on it.

The sales person and his supervisor were very helpful throughout the entire process. The only misstep that we had was to contact a different number (the Mpls number as opposed to the St Paul number) and were told that a "service call" would be charged if we had a technician out to "check the system of the recently installed garage door". We cleared it up immediately by contacting the original sales person. I'd note that with larger companies, it is important to deal with the same contact person throughout the process.
Description of Work: The removal of the existing garage door and electronic device to raise and lower the existing garage door. Assisted in the selection of the best door to replace the existing garage door. Installation of two 2X4s to adjust for the difference in size between the existing "custom" door size and the standard door size. Installation of the new rails, electronic garage door opening system, brought the system up to code, etc. When the new door jerked a bit upon raising or lowering a technician was called and immediately came out to investigate.

The garage door now works though it still is a little rough. Tim pointed out that the door sags in the middle and the top seal has hardened and catches when the door is closing. He suggested that I could a another horizontal brace to stop the saging and move the seal a fraction. I just wish he would have brought a brace along with him and I'd have had him install it. As it is I'll do it myself to avoid another service charge. Since I've had to add additional bracing at another house, I suspect this is not an unusual problem. Tim concurred, saying he suspects garage doors commonly lack sufficient bracing with sellers keeping prices down to meet the competition's pricing.

Though I did not purchase garage doors from this company, the representative was extremely helpful and I would go back for a bid on future work in a Minneapolis minute. Not only did I get one of the quickest call backs, but I got real education about what to look for, what to avoid, etc. I did not use this contractor because of delivery timing; I needed a new door quicker than they were able to do it. Even after I told the rep I wasn't going to go with him, he still offered time and advice and was very professional.
